A Note From the DirectorGreetings,

The MATT had a spectacular summer filled with exciting programs, wonderful exhibitions, and garden party fun! Our SOLD-OUT bus trip to the NY Botanical Gardens to see the Chihuly installations was terrific fun and we had a record number of guests come in to see the Peanuts, Yankees or Red Sox, and Winslow Homer exhibitions which all received high praise from our visitors as well as outstanding reviews in the press. I’m so pleased to announce that, due to audience demand, Winslow Homer: American Life 1857-1875 has been extended through December 3, 2017! If you have not seen this exhibition, I urge you to stop by before it closes.

Mark your calendar for Jane Peterson: At Home and Abroad, an exhibition two years in the making—it’s sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Opening on November 19 (p. 6), this exhibit of more than 60 works by Peterson will be the first museum retrospective in 45 years. It includes two stellar works from our collection as well as loans from America’s finest museums and many generous collectors from across the country. Premiering at The MATT, it then travels to two New York State venues and South Carolina during 2018.

It’s going to be an action-packed fall that includes two more fun bus trips. In early October, join Curator Cynthia Roznoy as we travel to Storm King Art Center in New Windsor, NY to visit the amazing 500-acres sculpture park. This trip is filling up fast so drop this calendar and CALL NOW to reserve your seat!! In December celebrate the winter season by traveling with The MATT to the gloriously decorated mansions of Newport, RI (p. 15).

We’ve planned an array of adult programs and workshops for you including the fall Lunch & Learn with artist Dmitri Wright (p. 14), a painting workshop with artist Christian Cesari (p. 18), and our Halloween MATT by Night: B.Y.O.P. (p. 13).

Bring the whole family to one of our monthly Community Free Day family activities or drop by our Story Time for Toddlers (p. 19). Will you be home with the kids for Columbus Day or Veterans Day? Consider celebrating with the Museum and attending our holiday-themed Family Day activities (p. 20).

Finally, I want to encourage you to join us for a step back in time to a night of music, romance, laughter, and dance when we present A Night at Jacques (p. 18). This musical review by our own Michael Dooling transports us back to the Roaring Twenties. Spend New Year’s Eve 1929 with us at the famous Jacques Burlesque Theatre in Waterbury for a rollicking look back at the decade between World War I and the Great Depression.

There is always something happening @ The MATT. I look forward to seeing you soon!

AN ARTIST FOR ALL SEASONSDmitri WrightDmitri Wright’s works merge the Impressionist focus on light with the post-Impressionist interest in vibrant color. His paintings celebrate the natural beauty and nuances of the landscape, both in the United States and abroad. This retrospective exhibition includes paintings from his Weir Farm plein air series, which highlights the barns, buildings and landscape that were home to famed American Impressionist J. Nnenna Okore, On Land and Beyond, 2015Mixed media installation

ÙTÚTÙNnenna OkoreÙtútù (ooh-TUH-tuh), is an Igbo word (from the primary language of the Igbo people of southeastern Nigeria), which means ‘morning’, but also implies ‘a new beginning’. It fittingly describes the work of this internationally celebrated contemporary sculptor. Okore uses textiles to create sculptural landscapes and stories that inspire viewers to reflect upon nature and look inward while interacting with designs created by flowing fabric. Informed by the textures, colors and landscapes of her childhood home of Nsukka, Nigeria, as well as her current Midwestern milieu, Okore's art blends the visual qualities of her past and present.

#IBELIEVEINWATERBURYFocusing on the City of Waterbury, artists were challenged to identify unique aspects of the city and her people that resonate for them. Curated by Will Wilkins, Executive Director of Real Art Ways; Judith McElhone, Executive Director of Five Points Gallery; and Bob Burns, the selected artists share their inspiration in works that demonstrate the beauty, joy, prosperity and momentum of Waterbury.

WINSLOW HOMERAmerican Life 1857-1875The exhibition features approximately 80 prints from illustrated weeklies and journals by American Master, Winslow Homer. The works were selected from a gift of engravings recently donated to the Mattatuck by collector David Jones and his wife Ann. This group of engravings is complemented by several paintings on loan from Connecticut institutions, including Yale University Art Gallery, Wadsworth Atheneum and New Britain Museum of American Art and reflects the concerns of a nation during a period of significant social and political change. Subjects addressed include the Civil War, domestic and daily life in the 19th century, the changing role of women and the outdoors.

JANE PETERSONAt Home and AbroadJane Peterson was an American Impressionist whose work covered the globe—everywhere from travels in Egypt and Turkey, to her homes in New York City and Palm Beach. The retrospective at the Mattatuck Museum will be the first museum show of her work in 45 years, as well as a survey that captures the variety of subjects and locales she painted.

Jane Peterson: At Home and Abroad is an exhibition that captures the spirit of Jane – an adventurer at heart – and unifies her work to present a complete record of her experiences. Jane was a modern female whose work deserves wider recognition today.

Andrzej Zielinski, Shredder Paused … I think, 2012-2015Acrylic on linen, Photo by E.G. Schempf

CONNECTED: RELATIONSHIPS WITH MACHINESAndrzej ZielinskiGuest curator: Jennifer Terzian

The machines we use on a daily basis—computers, cell phones, ATM machines, printers—serve as the subject matter of Andrej Zielinski’s paintings and sculptures. Sourced from a fascination with technology and with references to the art historical notion of the readymade and history of abstract painting, Zielinski conveys a message that we, as consumers of these ubiquitous objects, are simultaneously experiencing the threatening shadow of technological advancement as well as a shared sense of humanity.

Andrzej Zielinski was born in 1976 in Kansas City, Missouri. He received his BFA in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2004 he earned an MFA in painting from Yale University. He currently splits his time between Berlin, Germany and Lawrence, Kansas.

PAINTING WITH A CAMERAJerome SedlockGuest curator: DeBare Saunders

Jerome Sedlock’s abstract imagery is informed by his mechanical engineering and design background. His work follows in the trajectory of abstract photography that had its beginnings in the early 20th century in the work of Alfred Stieglitz, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and the Surrealists. Sedlock’s dramatic photographs emphasize shape, forms, patterns and textures, all rendered under the play of hard and soft light.

RUMINATIONS: NEW ACQUISITIONRobert RauschenbergRobert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) is an American Modern Master and was a forerunner of the Pop Art movement. He was engaged with the print medium since the early 1960s and with his friend Jasper Johns is identified as starting the contemporary print renaissance.

In this series of autographed intaglio etchings titled Ruminations, Rauschenberg used personal photographs and images from popular culture. Because Rauschenberg was such an important figure in the art world from the 1950s onward, his biography includes many of the important artists and events of that period.

MONTEIRO FAMILY COMMUNITY GALLERY

The Valley GirlsOnce a Valley girl, always a Valley girl. Carmella “Mally” DeSomma, Judith Gould Secco and June Pierpont Webster were all born and raised in the Naugatuck River Valley. From an early age, all three knew they wanted to be artists, each making her mark by interpreting and celebrating the world around them. They each achieved their artistic ambitions and stretched to attain new goals. This exhibition is a collaboration with Artsplace of Cheshire.

Men of Letters: The Presidential SignaturesFay Vincent, Waterbury native and Commissioner of Major League Baseball from 1989 to 1992, has generously donated his collection of presidential autographs to his hometown museum in honor of his parents Alice Lynch Vincent, a Waterbury native, and Francis T. “Fay” Vincent, Sr. From the founding fathers to George W. Bush, Vincent’s important collection of rare presidential signatures were executed by them while in office. They provide a fascinating glimpse of some of the official acts and personal communications of our nation’s leaders.

Items range from a passport signed by both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson to a military appointment signed by Abraham Lincoln, to a Christmas card sent by George and Barbara Bush with a photo of their children including “Georgie” and “Jebby.” The Mattatuck Museum is thrilled to present this significant collection.

YANKEES OR RED SOX America’s Greatest RivalryLike most sports rivalries, picking a side in the Red Sox-Yankee rivalry is almost entirely geographic – and Connecticut is at the epicenter, more or less being split in two. Guest curated by sports lover Neil Scherer, this exhibition had its inception in the 2004 American League Champion Series. This was the infamous year that the Yankees won the first three games, leading everyone to believe the Yankees would sweep, only to leave America stunned as the Red Sox rebounded to win the remaining four games and their first World Series title in 86 years. Scherer was at the deciding seventh game. In this exhibition Scherer tells this and other exciting stories about each team.

MUSICTO END ALL WARS: SONGS OF THE FIRST WORLD WARPopular and folk songs of the First World War fittingly describe the tragedy, loss, fear and hope of the era, but also capture levity so necessary in wartime. Music tied the men to their families at home and inspired those who left home and family to fight. This presentation of period songs includes a discussion of the issues, events and personalities of the War.

Performers: Rick Spencer has been in the historical performance industry for over 25 years. He worked as a historian and presenter of maritime songs and sea chanteys at Mystic Seaport. Dawn Indermuehle has devoted more than 20 years to folk ensembles. Currently she is an advisor, researcher, and singer/arranger for “LongSplice” and “Locomotive Shipwreck”.

In collaboration with Remembering World War One from the CT State Library and sponsored in part by the Connecticut State Library and a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities—Exploring the Human Endeavor.

ADULT STUDIO CLASSESBIG, BOLD & COLORFUL ACRYLIC PAINTINGFauvism was an avant-garde movement that flourished in France in the early years of the 20th century. The Fauve painters, including Matisse, expressed their spontaneous, often subjective response to nature in bold, undisguised brushstrokes and high-keyed, vibrant colors. Beginners and advanced students alike will learn to paint big, bold and colorful, in the fauvist style, in this 4-week acrylic painting session. Materials list will be supplied upon registration.

Instructor: Extraordinary painter Christian Césari, originally from Nice, joins the French modernist style with the subjects and places of his Connecticut home and experience.

CELEBRATE THE TASTE OF WATERBURY WITH CHEF DEAN AND ARTIST LINDACombine a cooking lesson, art class, and fine dining into one unforgettable and outrageously fun evening! Teams will create button-shaped pasta as an homage to Waterbury’s button industry, as Chef Dean stirs up a three-course meal. After dinner Linda, will instruct a step by step painting workshop of a Waterbury scene.

Get a group of friends together and join this husband and wife duo for an evening of eating, painting and laughter. (No experience necessary.)

Meal include a Harvest Salad with goat cheese, pomegranate and glazed walnuts over spinach greens; Chicken with roasted autumn vegetables; Cheesy pumpkin Alfredo sauce over freshly cooked pasta; and Tiramisu. B.Y.O.B.

In conjunction with #IBelieveInWaterbury.

PAPER FLOWER WORKSHOPThis three-hour workshop will show you the fun of making beautiful and realistic handcrafted paper flowers that last all year! Students will learn techniques to craft seasonal flowers and blooms perfect for holiday decorating and gift giving. Who knew that paper flower making could be so easy? Materials included.
