Staying in touch with Thorncliffe Park Public School!
Ongoing communication between home and school is of
significant importance for student success and well-being.
There are multiple ways that you can stay in touch with our
team at Thorncliffe Park. Your child’s teacher will be communicating with you di-
rectly through their own professional means, which could include face-to-face
conversations, telephone calls, agenda planner notes, websites, blogs or e-mail.
Should you have any questions or concerns regarding communication, please
discuss this with your child’s teacher.
Throughout the year, the administration team will need to communicate important
information to our families. We have multiple means for ongoing communication
between the school and our families:
School website: schools.tdsb.on.ca/thorncliffepark
Thorncliffe Thunder: A weekly update sent by e-mail
directly to families
As an eco-school, we strongly reflect on the impact of our actions on our environ-
ment. We will conduct most of our communication with families through electronic
means. On rare occasions, print communication may come home in a hard
copy. Families are strongly urged to follow the school on our school website in
order to stay up-to-date with the most current information regarding the
school. Further, please ensure that your e-mail address is up-to-date with our
school office so that you never miss an edition of the weekly news!
Please email [email protected] to join our distribution list.

POTENTIAL SCHOOL
RE-ORGANIZATION
Any potential re-organization will
be occurring sometime in the next
few weeks. The Ministry of
Education has specific
requirements regarding class size
and enrolment. At this time each
year the school board analyzes
each school’s enrolment data
and determines what changes
are necessary regarding the num-
ber of classes and teachers we
are allocated. Once we know
more we will be advising families
of any changes that are need to
be made.

Keeping Kids Safe
Drivers are reminded to do their part to
keep children safe near school buses.
Drivers should follow these tips:
• Stop and never pass a school bus
when its
red lights
are flash-
ing.
• Leave space around school buses
and avoid blocking school bus loading
zones so children can enter and exit
safely.
• Be prepared to stop for a school bus
at any time, not just during school hours.
• Always obey the rules of the road and
watch for children, especially in school
zones.
• Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks and
school crossings.
Parents can also help keep their
children safe by reminding them to be
aware of their surroundings when they
are on or near school buses.
Nut Safe School We are a safe school. Some of our students
and staff have severe peanut and nut
allergies. Even the smell of nuts and other
foods can trigger a serious reaction for
these students and staff.
Please DO NOT send peanut butter or nut
products to school. This also applies to
peanut butter imitation products, and
Nutella.
What is Anaphylaxis?
Anaphylaxis is a serious, acute, allergic
reaction that may cause death. It occurs
when an allergic person is exposed to their
particular allergen (a substance capable of
causing an allergic reaction). When the
allergen enters the body it triggers the
release of chemicals that can lead to life-
threatening symptoms.
The severity of an allergic reaction, as well
as the symptoms, can vary from person to
person and from one episode to the next in
the same person
In order to make Thorncliffe Park a nut safe
school, we need the understanding,
cooperation and commitment of every-
one in our community.

When the signal light turns red stop. If the light is red in the direction you are walking, do not cross the
street.
Yellow lights and signs mean caution or that you are coming to a dangerous area. If you are waiting to
cross the street, you should not cross if the light is yellow. The light is about to turn red, and cars will enter the intersection.
When you cross the street at a corner with a signal light, you should wait for the green light to show in
the direction you are walking. Even though the light is green, always look both ways before crossing at the intersection.
At busy intersections there may be lines on the road called a crosswalk for you to walk between. There may also be special signals to tell you it is okay to cross the street. These are the WALK sig-
nal or a picture of a person walking like the ones shown here.
Like a YELLOW traffic light, both of these flashing "DON'T WALK" signals mean to use caution.
1) If you are in the street, finish crossing the street.
2) If you have not started crossing the street, stay on the curb.
These signs mean you are coming to a crosswalk by a school.
On school days this area will be busy when school is opening and closing.
At this crosswalk, like any other crosswalk, it is important to look carefully to the left, right and left again if you have to cross the street. Crosswalks are two white lines painted on the road which go across the street. You should walk inside the lines.
If you must walk through parked traffic, stop and look carefully before step-ping out from between vehicles.
Don't run between parked cars and buses. Remember the danger areas close to school buses where the driver can't see you.

On Tuesday, October 6th Thorncliffe students and staff participated in a “fun run”
around our school yard and park. Music played during the event and the whole
school sang our school song. Everyone had a great afternoon because it was filled
Thorncliffe spirit, smiles and laughter and the Thorncliffe motto “TOGETHER WE
CAN!” Thanks to the HPE staff for organizing this wonderful event.

Fire Safety at Home and
School
As part of our school emergency
procedures, we held our first suc-
cessful fire drill at Thorncliffe Park.
The best way to practice fire safety
is to make sure a fire doesn't break
out in the first place. That means you
should always be aware of potential
hazards. In the event of a fire, fami-
lies should plan a place to meet out-
side far away from the fire. Please look at the Fire
Inspection Checklist and click the link
http://www.sparky.org/#/sparky to learn
more about fire safety with your children and down-
load fun activities.

not because we will get credit or
praise for doing it.
