The Altar Flowers that will be offered at our Eucharistic Celebrations for this week are in celebration of the marriage of Russell & Kristen Moke. This is a gift from the Moke & Bondi Families.

The readings for the last few weeks have had as a recurrent theme the “vineyard”. If you visit the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset, you will see a large sculpture of a grape vine. This has been a symbol for the Nation of Israel since ancient times as expressed in the prophets and the psalms, as in Psalm 80 today: A vine from Egypt you transplanted; you drove away the nations and planted it. It put forth its foliage to the Sea, its shoots as far as the River. Jesus carries this forward to us in the Gospel of John: “I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, breach apart from me you can do nothing.” Jn 15:5 We have to do our part. We have to be faithful to the Lord. Isaiah tells of a vineyard which is planted and fertilized and watered but yields not good grapes but sour wild grapes. Nor should we be like the tenants in the parable in today’s Gospel who even kill the landowner’s son in an attempt to take over what is not theirs. In either case there will certainly be “wailing and grinding of teeth.” St Paul tells us how be fruitful in our relationship to the Lord in the second reading. It’s worthwhile to meditate on these words during this week: Have no anxiety at all, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:6 In all things and at all times, “Fear is useless, what is needed is faith.” Mark 5:36.

Marcos 5:36.
