Fr om Pr esident Beth

Answer s to her quest i on " How ya doing?"

Our week has been consumed w ith the death of my cousin Penny Duncan, who l ived in Marsh's Edge. We have postponed the Celebration of Li fe ser vice and are concentrating on cleaning out her ME apar tment and closing the var ious accounts, the var ious f inancial i tems, etc. That w i l l occupy us for several weeks .

John H Matthews

Beth, glad to see you are keeping busy.

We are both going along w ith our programs. Sue has been to PT tw ice so far and is going 3 times a week to tr y to get back to walking again.

I am staying ver y busy w ith our cat r escues and keeping the household going.

Whi le the GreyOwl Inn is in mothballs there?s not much happening there. Great time to clean out those closets and get a load ready for ?Hello Goodby? . What packrats we have been!

Hope to connect w ith the gang again soon. Good that you are ar chiving the meetings as the zoom time is now taken up w ith other sur vival work. Glad I was a Boy Scout and also learned how to sur vive from Uncle Sam some years back.

Too bad we dropped the Draft. Today?s kids are r eal ly missing out on a super learning exper ience.

Bye for now

Yours in Rotar y, Bi l l Gussman

Great idea Beth,

Jane and I have been reading a lot and getting caught up on al l of the things we have recorded on our DVR.

We are r eady to bust out of here!

Beth, thank you for checking in w ith ever yone. I think i t is a great idea to get this feedback from ever yone. You w i l l have to put i t in our ar chives to get brought out for our next big bir thday celebration. Is that in 5 years? Won?t i t be great to have i t in the r ear view mir ror !

Bob and I are doing f ine. We are both in the ?at r isk? categor y by vir tue of being of a cer tain age, but Bob also has an under lying pulmonar y condition, so we are most mindful to keep him safe and well . We have been staying at home and going out only to walk in the neighborhood and to go to the post off ice since March 11th. That was when my pediatr ician fr iend said that the vir us was going to be bad and that we should stay home and away from public places. So, that has been two weeks ago. Our daughter includes us in her grocer y and pharmacy er rands, so we avoid that, too, which is a big r el ief of concern.

Thanks to learning Zoom through Rotar y, I am able to par ticipate in vir tual meetings for the Coastal Symphony Board and w ith the other nonprofi ts I work w ith. I can car r y on my law practice using my phone and my computer , so I have met w ith cl ients that way and continue to prepare their documents, as usual. Those of us who are accustomed to working online and remotely have a r eal advantage. Those who can only work at a given place w i l l be the hardest hi t dur ing the ?stay at home? order.

We are lucky to have lots of w indows over looking the marsh and al low ing lots of l ight, so we are not going too sti r crazy. Zoom has opened the oppor tuni ties to see family in several places at once as well as fr iends at Rotar y meetings, so i t is a godsend.

I f ind that i t is easier to stay sane i f I am able to stay in the moment and think about today and, maybe, tomor row. Keeping to a schedule helps, and having a l ist of things to do keeps me busy, which is not a problem. I have a backlog of things to do at home that w i l l keep me busy for as long as this lasts.

It sure seems that there might have been better ways for God to get our attention, but there is no question that the coronavir us has gotten our col lective attention al l over the wor ld. Like Georgia O?Keefe at Ghost Ranch, we are f inding out that we can l ive r easonably well when l i fe is r educed to i ts essentials. Maybe, when this is f inal ly over and i t is safe to emerge, we w i l l discover that we are the better for i t. I hope so. I think we w i l l appreciate each other more and realize how much we need and depend on each other.

Dur ing this time of physical separation, i t is impor tant to be social ly connected w ith people far and near. Thank you for helping us to do that and for being a great leader through these troubled times.

All the best,

Linda Muir

Hey Beth

Hi Beth

Funny how you never miss the simple things in l i fe unti l you don?t have them.

Please tel l ever yone that I am REALLY looking for ward to getting off this ship

And getting back to l i fe as normal at SSI Rotar y.

Stay well .

Jennifer M. Broadus

(She and Bob have been on a cruise to Chi l i .They are sequestered in their room on the ship! They are feel ing f ine.)

Thanks so much for r eaching out and think i t?s a great idea. Here?s my 2cents wor th

This whole isolation thing is nothing new to me as I have been doing i t pretty much since November. Having had lung surger y then, I was ver y afr aid of getting so much as a cold let alone the possibi l i ty of the f lu so I stayed in almost al l of the time. So this is just an extension of what I was alr eady doing.

I think what saved Peter and me as we do l ike to watch TV in the evenings is the str eaming ser vices such as Netf l ix and Amazon Pr ime. I would watch out for some good ser ies or movies and then we?d have something good to watch. A r eally good str eaming ser vice is Acorn which car ies mostly Br i tish and Austral ian ser ies and movies which are r eal ly good. I t?s wor th the monthly charge to have some good ser ies to choose from.

Other than reading a lot and resting, I haven?t done much else as I haven?t felt l ike doing too much. This al l w i l l end so my advice to ever yone is to hang in there and zoom the meeting (which I w i l l do next week). Lots more Zoom meetings are cropping up so Rotar y was ahead of the cur ve on that

Hope this isn?t too bor ing to include. Thanks for al l you are doing to tr y to br ing us together.

Ann F. Nermoe

Beth,

We?re staying busy r eading and w ith projects we haven?t had time for in the past. We?re isolating ourselves and doing well? ..wor r ying about the impact on others. Thanks for al l you?re doing. I enjoy the Rotar y meetings on Zoom.

Beth -

I hope you are well . Thank you for your updates on our members. We are safe and well . I pul led my kids out of daycare on March 12 because Nicholas had a fever and a cough, and we have chosen to self-isolate since then. I tel l you this because after 14 days of isolation, this last Thur , I felt the greatest wave of r el ief. I t was l ike nothing else - so r efr eshing. So to al l who are hesi tating about isolating, I offer my exper ience of getting through those two anxious isolation weeks; I am sti l l isolating (and w i l l be for the foreseeable future) but I feel SO much better now. I t feels wonder ful to know that we are safe, and that we are not harming anyone. Power through the two tough weeks! Ever ything feels easier after that!

Dear Beth, Jane and I are staying home and so far we are sti l l speaking! Jane was concerned that Har r is Teeter was out of toi let paper unto I did an inventor y and found out we had 48 rol ls. Dear Beth,

From New Hampshir e, where i t 's 40 degrees and dr izzl ing. We returned ear ly to meet our daughter here who wanted to "escape" from New York; who could blame her. And we've al l quarantined ourselves for 2 weeks and are in good shape at this point.

Please pass on my sincere thanks to al l in the Club for the hospital i ty show n to me dur ing the season there. Not sure you are sti l l meeting on Tuesdays but you have such a good camarader ie i t hardly matter s. Our Club in Concord is not meeting at our usual spor t, but is now meeting on l ine w ith the help of Zoom. (I t works qui te well for the group, even those technical ly challenged.)
