Working together towards successThe Fall Cottage Life Show team is dedicated to putting on the best pos-sible show with the best possible results. Expertise in show management, logistics, features and marketing all come together for a weekend of interaction between quality exhibitors and quality attendees. The results speak for themselves.

FAQsWho attends the show? Each year 10,000+ people attend the Fall Cottage Life Show. The majority (75%) have a household income over $100,000, and they (90%) visit the show with family members. Over 84% own a cottage or vacation property, and 13% own land on which they plan to build. The most popular ownership areas are Georgian Bay/Parry Sound, Kawarthas, Muskoka, and Haliburton.

How does the Fall Cottage Life Show compare to the Spring Cottage Life Show?Although the Fall Cottage Life Show is smaller and has fewer attendees, many exhibitors do as much (or more) business. Exhibitors are able to spend quality time with attendees, and for many products and services a higher percentage of attendees are actively shopping than they are at the Spring show. Many of our exhibitors find exhibiting in both shows to be a highly-effective strategy for securing sales.

Is there a deadline for booking exhibit space? While there is not an actual deadline date to book, we encourage you to do so early in order to secure a spot and ensure your logistical requirements are met. The 2018 Fall Cottage Life Show sold out, with waiting lists for certain exhibit categories in place by July. As an incentive for early booking, rate discounts are available until July 31st and September 11th.

What is provided in the exhibit space?Drape and rail are provided at the back and sides of each booth. Please see “Included in your booth fee” (on back page) for further details.

Is anything else required to exhibit?Signage indicating your company name and a floor covering are mandatory for all exhibits but not provided. Proof of liability insurance with a minimum of $2,000,000 is required for participation in the Cottage Life Shows. Further details are provided upon booking.

Is electrical hook-up included in booth cost? No. An electrical order form will be made available prior to the show.

Are there any other costs associated with participation in the show?Other than booth cost, electrical, and poten-tially insurance, all other costs are within your control. Items such as signage, floor covering, tables, booth structures, and the like are avail-able from designated suppliers, but you are welcome to bring your own with you. Phone and internet services are available for purchase.

When will we receive our booth location?Once the majority of the available floor space is accounted for, which we anticipate will be by the end of August, exhibitors will be asked to indicate logistical requirements for their booth. Confirmation of booth location, along with a finalized floor plan, will be mailed approximately one month prior to the show.

When do I move in and out?Thursday is the designated move-in day. Each exhibitor will be assigned a specific move-in time based on their booth location and logistical needs. Move-out is Sunday and Monday, commencing at show-close.

Fall Cottage Life Show

WatertoysMake sure watertoys—from noodles to kick-boards to tubes—are suitable for the age and weight ranges of those who will be using them.

“Children can seem comfortable in the water on floaties and noodles, but it’s important to maintain adequate supervision, says Callan. Check watertoys for leaks before purchase and use, and keep them deflated when there isn’t supervision, she adds. “If you expect to be using them in rough waters, invest in higher-quality inflatables. You get what you pay for.”

Water equipment safety pointers from Paddle CanadaJust because it floats, doesn’t mean it’s safe. Follow these tips to prevent drowning and get the most out of your watertoys

Water play is loads of fun, yet deceptively dangerous. “Using any kind of inflatable on water can give people a false sense of security. This past summer, a man drowned on Halifax’s Chocolate Lake using an inflatable duck,” says Graham Ketcheson, the executive director of Paddle Canada—a recreational paddling trainer certification and instruction organization. “Watertoys are not safety equipment and even top-notch swimmers need to be wearing lifejackets and PFDs.”

Dawn Callan, the PaddleSmart program coordinator, adds that it’s important to purchase watertoys and crafts that match your experience level and type of use. “Equipment from big box outlets are great if you’re playing 15 feet from the dock. But if you’re taking toys and vessels out for rough play, like white-water rafting, and they may not provide proper flotation, you can get hurt or worse.”

Here are a few key tips to keep in mind when shopping for equipment that keeps you afloat. Wear comfortable lifejacketsMost recreational boaters who die on the water each year in Canada are not wearing flotation devices or are not wearing them properly, according to Transport Canada. “It won’t work if you’re not wearing it,” says Ketcheson, noting that the purchase of lifejackets and PFDs should not be an afterthought. “If it fits properly, it’s comfortable, and you will be more likely to wear it. Spend the time to try on different sizes and find one that’s lightweight and ventilates well for each family member.”

Improve your skill “There’s no point putting $5,000 into a boat unless you learn how to self-rescue or re-enter your boat from the water,” says Callan. Paddle Canada recommends taking a course to upgrade your

boating safety skills from any registered certified instructor. PaddleCanada.com has a list of them across Canada. “If you are truly a casual boater, a clinic can be as good as a course,” adds Callan. “Look for a reputable provider of online safety videos, such as PlaySafe Productions.”

Fall is a great time of year to examine wear and tear and consider replacing water play equipment, says Ketcheson. “Just remember that safety as a priority only elevates the fun factor.”paddlecanada.com | (888) 252-6292

Boards and boatsIn addition to conducting due diligence on the condition of new or used boards and boats, it’s important to make

sure safety features, such as extra flotation in a canoe that prevents it from sinking when capsized, are present, says Ketcheson. “Know your skill level and boundaries and don’t over- or under-reach,” adds Callan. “The type and quality of boat you need will be different if you’re just leisure crafting on flat water versus taking on rapids or going on remote excursions.”

Ask the experts at Discovery Dream HomesWe asked the experts at Discovery Dream Homes the top five cottage design trends for the upcoming build season

As one of the leaders in the custom home and timber industry, the Discovery Dream Homes award-winning design team have their fingers on the pulse of what’s hot in home building trends, especially in cottage country. “True custom home design hinges on developing personalized living spaces for homeowners,” says Raymond King, CEO of Discovery Dream Homes, headquartered just 90 minutes from Toronto on the outskirts of Peterborough. “So that means we’re constantly pushing the envelope in our quest to produce unique and welcome design components for our customers.”

Discovery’s highly creative design experience is supported with its state-of-the-art virtual modelling software. “Being able to see in 3D exactly what a design looks like enables our customers to feel con-fident to explore all kinds of design possibilities, in real-time, before their eyes,” adds King. The end result are some pretty awe-inspiring Discover Dream Homes dwellings.

In no particular order, here are the Discovery dream team’s top five design trends for 2018.

“There really are endless possibilities with today’s cottage design. With our energetic design team continuing to be on the forefront of all the new and upcoming trends in design, construction techniques and materials available, you are sure to have an unforgettable and enjoyable experience bringing your dreams to reality” —Raymond King, CEO

1 Next-level contemporary“We are ahead of the curve. Modern design

typically features straight lines, but we’re incor-porating a mix of curved with straight now. Roof features as well as complete walls are enhancing the cottage experience by going curved,” notes Nicole Sokol, an architectural designer with Discovery. She adds that mixed materials, such as steel I-beams, concrete wall features, and solid oversized timber posts are increasingly taking on starring design roles. “People love the rawness of form,” she explains, and Discovery can experiment with these mixed materials—such as live-edge wood or rusted metal panels, in designs confidently. “Our 3D design software allows us to get the scale of these unique materials just right, ensuring, as in modern design, that they have both purpose and beauty.”

3 Green mainstreaming“Customers are really getting serious about using materials and

technique to lower their carbon footprint and energy consumption,” says Miranda Akers, a Discovery architectural designer. “Net zero energy homes and net zero waste homes, with features like solar roof tiles, are just around the corner,” she notes, adding, “There are smaller ways to make a big green difference. Our 3D design software allows us to consider all aspects of passive green design, for example, such as where to place windows and how best to leverage the sun.” Plus, being fully transparent with building materials is a must, and Discovery sources FSC® certified timbers, purchases from green conscious suppliers, and incorporates lean manufacturing procedures to reduce waste, energy, and consumption.

4 Upping the A-frame gameOf course the A-frame roofline is iconic in cottage country

because it creates such as welcoming chalet-style feel, says Emma Brown, an architectural designer at Discovery. “It’s even more popular than ever these days, along with contemporary spins, such as our visionary approach of adding a wing on one side or incor-porating two A-frames.” Most importantly, if clients want a classic look or a double-storey A-frame with gables, Discovery designers are experts at designing the look seamlessly with the landscape, notes Brown. “Whether it’s tucked away in a wooded lot or on a rocky waterfront, we evolve it to suit the setting and the customer’s vision of curb appeal.”

5 Enter the smart home“The smart home concept

is very popular with cottagers,” says Azermi Aziz, a Discovery architectural designer. “They love the idea of total home automation, where they can control the light-ing, heating, ventilation, audio, and security systems.” Being able to control elements with one touch remotely—whether on the dock or halfway home on Highway 400—is a huge plus for cottagers in terms of convenience, safety, and energy costs. “There are also ben-efits to integrating these features into the home design right from first design concept,” notes Aziz, “such as reducing the number of wires and switches. When we are less worried about electrical placement, it allows for more room to breathe and purity of design, a cleaner space and more open corners.”

“While we’re experts in what’s possible, you’re the expert in knowing what you want,” says King. He adds that’s why the Discovery Dream Homes experience is designed to be truly empowering from start to finish. “Our goal is not only to give you exactly what you hoped for, but to surprise and delight you with creative ideas, unparalleled workmanship, and pleasure in your dream home.”discoverydreamhomes.com | (866) 395-5647

2 Timber is kingIn classic timber frame design, large timbers compose the

structure of the roof and walls. “Increasingly, we are seeing a demand for cottage-country homes to have incorporated in the design decorative timber frame elements only,” says Kate Jewell, a Discovery architectural designer. “Capitalizing on the surgi-cal precision of our CNC cut timber components, we are able achieve this effortlessly, even on cottage retrofits. It allows for a traditional timber frame look without the added expense with engineering and assembly.” That’s not all—these days, the dream team is upping the timber frame look for clients by adding steel plates, rods and mixed material connectors, for example. “Thanks to Discovery’s CNC machine, we’re able to add compli-cated, personalized extras such as curved chords and stunning corbels with precision, and cost-effectively,” says Jewell.

Space and time are two cottage premiums that are wasted on unused porches, points out Steven Hunt, the owner of Sunspace Sunrooms in Newcastle, Ont. “We joke that our WeatherMaster® Windows & Doors enclosure system is a cure for OPD (Open Porch Disorder), but it’s the truth for many cottagers,” he adds. “We designed it to be the perfect addition to any home or cottage, allowing for more space with extended seasonal use so everyone can make more lasting memories.”

1. Clever enclosuresHunt designed the WeatherMaster system—now in the improved version two—to be easily stackable to provide up to 75 per cent ventilation, while integrated screens keep bugs out. At the same time, acrylic roofing fends off harmful UV rays and rain showers, while retaining 90 per cent light transmission and clarity for 50 years.

2. Extra space without full-blown reno costsCreating more entertaining space doesn’t have to come with a big time or cost commitment. “Our system gives you the comfort of a sunroom and the luxury of a screened room without the expense of a massive renovation,” says Hunt.

3. Design that works with your home or cottageSunspace Sunroom’s WeatherMaster enclo-sure system is simple, fully customizable, and blends seamlessly with any style, from modern to post-and-beam, notes Hunt.
