John and I and over 200 other priests and bishops from the Archdiocese were up in Harbor Springs for our every other year gathering to pray, reflect and relax together. The conversation focused on the Archbishop’s pastoral letter, Unleashing the Gospel. You will be hearing more of this in the coming weeks. The parish councils of both parishes have read the document and are talking about ways that we can act upon some of the central points of the vision laid out for us. Some of the beginning steps are not a matter of doing anything new, but increasing our efforts or mostly getting people to understand their role as disciples. Too many still view being a member of the church no differently than we do belonging to a club. We pay our dues, we go to functions from time to time, but it does not have a real impact in our daily living. Being a disciple of Jesus is not about belonging to a church, but about following the way of life shown to us by the Son of God. It is based upon understanding who it is that is leading us, knowing him in a personal way and being moved by the Spirit to respond to the love of God in our lives through service and communal worship. We often say that we belong to this parish or that, but St. Paul rightly reminds us that we belong to Christ. When we only focus on parish membership, our vision of discipleship becomes very limited; it is in understanding that we belong to Christ that expands our vision of our mission and calls us to a radical life of love called discipleship. Once upon a time, we lived in a world where belonging to the Catholic Church was about praying, paying and obeying, but now we must awaken our hearts and minds to the call to renewal. Like the early church who saw threats to the faith on every side, we too must respond to the challenges of the world around us which seeks to diminish the Gospel to the point of not being relevant. That is what happens when we fail to pray, cease learning more about our faith and stop going to Mass on the weekends. When we minimize our response to God, we give in to the movement that seeks to eliminate God from our world. God is not dead, but we decrease the presence of God in the world by our own failure to proclaim him and live him each day of our lives. As we pray this week, let us ask God to give us the strength we need to be faithful disciples in the world. God bless you all. Keep reading all the pages of the church paper In our busy world we often find ourselves rushing through things and that often means that we do not read as carefully as we should. I encourage you to read the church paper front to back and don’t miss any articles. The Parishes of

MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia

This week Fr.

Q. What is the difference between a secular priest and a religious priest? Are religious priests more spiritual?

A. A secular, or better yet, a diocesan priest is a priest who has been ordained for a particular diocese and who is ordinarily assigned by the bishop to serve in a parish. This is their main work, although some are engaged in other ministries as well. When a secular priest is ordained, he incardinates (affiliates) with a particular diocese or archdiocese. When he does this, he also makes a promise to obey the bishop. In the Western Church, he vows to remain celibate.

A religious priest, on the other hand, is not a designation of being more spiritual than a diocesan priest, but rather the word refers to the form of life the priest lives. All men and women who make public vows in a religious order are called religious. It means that by their vows of poverty, celibate chastity, and obedience, their lives are oriented in a special way to the virtue of religion so that all they do becomes a continual act of the worship of God.

This is true of all religious, sisters and brothers as well as priests. Ordinarily, the religious live and pray in community. Many of them wear a religious habit. Often they are engaged in a specialized form of ministry, such as teaching.

Throughout the month of October, we will be collecting white socks for men and women, deodorant for men and women, packages of gum, hard candy, packages of

granola bars and packages of Rice Krispy treats for our Service men and women. We will also have two weekends in October where we will have Patriotic note cards available for you to write a personal message to individuals in our Armed Forces as well as notes for our Veterans. We will make sure they get to our Armed Forces and Veterans. The Archdiocese wants each church to do a service project so we thought that this was a way to show our love and support to those who protect and have protected US. In these troubled times, it is a humble way to say THANK YOU. There will be boxes in the back of church and the Life Center for your donations. In no way is this meant to be a hardship to anyone. Please do what you can for our brave brothers and sisters. May God Bless all of you for your continued support of our Christian Service projects.

Fruits of the Spirit

Welcome back to another year of learning and growing in God’s love through the eyes of

our students. Every day brings new discoveries, questions and ideas about how God wants us to be. The Holy Spirit helps us grow in faith. In growing with the help of the Holy Spirit, we are strengthened to answer God’s call to holiness.

The fifth graders are working on the Fruits of the Holy Spirit which help them answer the call to God. Each week they are assigned a new “Fruit” to observe in their life. They need to identify it and share how this fruit was visible for others to see. It is great to read what the students observed every day.

I would like to share some of the “sightings” the students have written about.

KindnessN My Dad went to Kroger to get some stuff. Before my Dad left he told us to pick up our roller racers. While my friend, sister and I were picking up the roller racers, I had an idea. We should pick up the barn. So we organized, swept, and picked up. When my dad came home he was surprised! We liked it very much.

PatienceN I saw patience in our school through my classmates and schoolmates. Glenn showed patience when he sat quietly and waited his turn. Michael showed patience when he needed to fill up his water bottle. The whole school as they waited for Ms. Silvestri to start prayer. Lastly, my dad showed patience when we were stuck in traffic. It made me realize that you need to be more patient in life.

FaithN Listening to Fr. Joe or Fr. John spreading the word of Jesus to the people at church and in school is one way faith is shared. Another is when the gracious greeters greet you in the morning.

PeaceN is a very important fruit of the Holy Spirit. God wants all of us to have peace in our day. If you had a fight go up to that person and say you are sorry, shake hands, and go on with your day. Bring peace to the countries that are at war. God wants all of us to have peace in our lives.

The fifth graders are seeing how important it is for us to follow God by using the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control in our life each day. God wants all of us one day in His heavenly kingdom. Are you willing to seek the help of the Holy Spirit? Which fruit(s) will you display in the coming days? Which ones will you see in others?

Until next time, may God bless you with His abundant love.

Dear St. Augustine & Holy Family Parish Members:

It’s Auction Season! Mark your calendars for Friday, November 3rd when Maniaci’s Banquet Center will be hosting St. Augustine School’s 10th annual dinner/auction. This year our theme is “A Night in Casablanca!” Join us for a night in black and white traveling back to the 1940’s! A True Affair to Remember set in exotic Casablanca, Morocco!

We are looking for donations of new items for our auction. If you would like to donate individual items or create a basket yourself, it would be greatly appreciated. (Please bring any donations to the school office no later than Monday, October 2nd, and mark it “auction” along with your name and contact info.) We are also looking for corporate sponsors at different denominations to cover some of our costs and/or purchase some big ticket items for auction. Lastly, we are once again looking to include some vacation packages in our auction. If you, or someone you know, own a time share or a vacation house, we would love to auction off some trips. (If there is a small surcharge for cleaning or name changes, we might be able to cover that if necessary.) Please contact me with any questions.

Tickets are on sale now in the school office for $40 each and include a sit-down dinner, a full open bar, a 50/50 raffle, wheel barrel of cheer, over 200 terrific items to bid on, and much more. Buy your tickets early, as when you pay for your tickets, you will choose your seat in the hall.

Thank you for your continued support of our event! Watch the bulletin for more sneak peaks into this fun and exciting event!
