Background
GSU is a large urban university with approximately 24,000 full and part-time students
Pullen Library is the primary campus library; smaller libraries include the Law Library and the Instructional Technology Center

Why Paw Print?
Printing expenses were growing beyond budgeted funds
University labs and libraries were getting eaten alive by wasteful printing– reams & reams of paper– expensive toner cartridges
Needed a way to limit certain stations for GSU patrons

Paw Print Basics
Each student who wants to print in the labs or in the library must have a login ID.
Student campus email account also serves as their Paw Print account.
Paw Print account allots 150 free prints per semester; once this limit is exceeded the cost is 5 cents per page

What about non-GSU patrons?– Must generate a temporary ID in order to
print– Can add value to ID in increments of 20 or
100 prints– ID is valid for 48 hours– ID is restricted for use only on certain
workstations

What about poor quality prints, etc.?– No cash refunds can be given– If a print is illegible or not usable for some
other reason, we can credit the user’s account

Types of logins for the system
Students– Pawprint account; typically something like
gs12rab– If they don’t need to print we can sign them
on with libtemp2.lib Faculty
– Faculty.lib allows free printing

Non-GSU patrons– libtemp (does not allow printing)– Temp ID (e.g. T0101.tmp)
Secure.lib (is used in the event that someone has done everything correct but still cannot login)

What equipment was required? PCOUNTER Station
– Serves as a printing counter and queue monitor.
– Minimum: 80486 with 8MB RAM.Recommended: Low-end Pentium 80 MB hard drive
– Network Adapter and Port – Approximate Cost: $400-$1000

Cash Receptor Unit – Collects cash and sends data to the cash
receptor station– Connects to the Cash Receptor Station– Approximate Cost: $1000

Cash Receptor Station – Reads amount from unit and deposits
pages to their account – Minimum: 80486 with 16MB RAM
80 MB hard drive – Network Adapter and Port – Approximate Cost: $400

workstations in one building)– Approximate Cost: $295.00

Advantages Disadvantages
Causes patrons to think before they print
Saves paper and toner for the library
Allows us to keep non-GSU patrons from monopolizing computers
Students think it is a hassle to require an account to print
Can cause patron and staff frustration
Dependent on several servers not under the Library’s control

Conclusions
Paw Print is an effective, but imperfect system for recovering printing costs.
The system is probably most suitable for larger institutions due to the level of support required from the computer center.
