Berea Tree Week!
The Tulip Tree is the Kentucky State Tree? This decision was notwithout controversy, however. Contention brewed for more than 40years between Tulip Poplar advocates and those who favored theKentucky Coffeetree. A decision was finally made in 1994, with theselection of the Yellow Poplar, (Magnoliaceae Liriodendrontulipifera,) a.k.a. Tulip Tree or Tulip Poplar. Oddly enough, this tree isnot a poplar at all, but instead, a member of the Magnolia family.
The Tulip Poplar is also the symbol of BereaCollege Forestry and the Forestry Outreach
Center. They can be identified by theirgreenish yellow and orange striped, tulip-
like flowers that grow on the tree. Someother defining characteristics include their
tall size, the unique leaf shape, and its highcanopy.
The Berea College ForestryOutreach Center is hosting itsfirst ever Tree Week, inconjunction with the UrbanForest Initiative's Tree Weekbased in Lexington. Check outout Facebook page and websitefrom Oct. 10-17th for activitiesand learning opportunities forcommunity members.

Carvings can cause a lot ofdamage to the tree. Theycreate wounds that let inpathogens and weakenthe tree’s defenses.The carvings also damagethe Cambium layer, whichlies just beneath the barkand transports nutrientsand water.
Kayla Zagray, worked as anAmeriCorps EELCorps with theForestry Outreach Center, andused her skills to develop theinner workings of the Center thatwill help it have effectiveprograms that can be sustainedfollowing her AmeriCorpsservice. Thank you Kayla for allyour hard work in ourcommunity!
Our newest member, JuliaRoberts, is a recent alumnus ofBerea College, graduating with adegree in Business Managementin May of 2020. She will beserving through the AmeriCorpsEELCorps program for the nextyear.
