Pastoral Letter

Through all the changing scenes of life,

in trouble and in joy, the praises of my God shall still

my heart and tongue employ.

This hymn is a paraphrase of Psalm 34 – “I will bless the Lord at all times, His praise shall con-tinually be in my mouth”.

Change is all around us; some-times it is for better and some-times for worse. The important thing is how we cope with it. As I write the seasons are changing. It is getting cooler and autumn is beginning to take hold, summer is over. I’m afraid I don’t cope with that very well – the heating goes on and the sweatshirts appear and I feel quite sad that we won’t see a long hot summer day until next year. There are changes in our home life as well with the oldest daughter preparing to move out (again!) and younger daughter preparing to move back in. Our daughter-in-law returns to work at the end of October and is very ap-prehensive about leaving 9-month-old Millie despite having two doting Nanas to look after her!

Some of you may have just started working in a new job environment and are feeling uneasy about it because there are some unfamiliar

tasks ahead for you. Perhaps you have just been transferred over to a new department and there are great expectations for you to per-form well, expectations you are not very confident you can meet. Perhaps there is someone reading this who has just got a place at university and you are wondering if you will be able to cope with the heavy workload of lectures, tutorials and assignments. Some-one may be moving to a new house or flat. Another may be get-ting married soon or have just got married, and yet another may be having their very first child. And there may be some who are facing debt, sickness and even death. Our life is filled with one change after another (and that is without the great upheavals and political and social crises we face in the world today).

As we go through all these chang-ing scenes of life, and as we move on to new places, to unfamiliar and unchartered waters, feelings of uncertainty and anxiety are bound to arise. And these unset-tled feelings, if not properly dealt with, can easily lead one into the depths of despair and depression. This is why we all desperately need to know and believe what

(continued from previous page)

God has told us in the Bible about how we may include him in all the changing scenes of life.

In whatever circumstance or sit-uation in life you are, you can find tremendous comfort and encouragement that you are not alone. For God has promised never to leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5) and he will be with you wherever you go. You can experience God's pres-ence, whereever you are and as the writer of the book of He-brews goes on to say in verse 6, “so we can say with confidence,

“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?”

As you go now through all the changing scenes of life, God will be with you in everything you do and in every experience in life - in good or bad circumstances, in sickness or in health, in life or in death. All you have to do is ask him: Change and decay in all around I

see O Thou who changest not, abide

with me

BOOK SWAP

Saturday 12th October 2019 10.00am - 12noon

at 36 Mill Road, Worton (hosted by Jill Duckworth)

Advance notice:

Saturday 9th November 2019 at Oakley House, 80 High Street, Worton

(hosted by Alison Parker)

Extracts from ‘The Week’ magazine

The hottest years were all this century

The UK’s ten hottest years on record have all occurred since 2002, ac-cording to a Met Office report published two days after the UK recorded its highest ever temperature. ‘With global emissions of greenhouse gases on the rise, the UK will continue to get warmer and wetter as global warming accelerates’.

Tree-planting and climate change

Reforesting vast swathes of the planet is the best available solution to climate change, say scientists in Switzerland. The team used satellite pho-tography, and data on soil and climate conditions, to identify land that was neither dedicated to farming nor built on - and worked out that across the world there are 0.9 billion hectares that are unforested, and where trees could grow. If trees were planted here, they calculated that in the next 40 to 100 years they could capture 205 billion tonnes of CO2, the equivalent of two thirds of the CO2 humans have generated since the In-dustrial Revolution. Critics of the report questioned whether it’s remotely feasible to acquire that much land, and grow that many trees, in anything like the timeframe required to prevent dangerous levels of warming.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance are recycling CRISP PACKETS and receiving payment. I am happy to be a collecting point. I have a par-cel container at my front door which can be used for collecting.

Please help to raise money for this worthy cause. Thankyou. Jill Duckworth. 36 Mill Road. Worton. 01380 721324.

Explore your own wonderland at a new children’s sensory walk

An Alice in Wonderland themed family event is planned for the Oc-tober half term at Lackham House to raise money to support children and adults living with a disability.

A Wander in Wonderland, taking place on Monday 28 October 2019, is designed for children aged 1-11 to experience the sights, sounds, smells and sensations of their very own wonderland king-dom.

The 1.5 mile wander will be set among the trees in the walled garden at Lackham House, near Chippenham and will be fully accessible to children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Each child who takes part will be fundraising to support Designabil-ity, a small charity based in Bath who design and develop assistive technology and helpful products for people living with a disability or long-term health condition.

The charity has already transformed the lives of children like Frank who has dystonic quad cerebral palsy as a result of becoming seri-ously ill with meningitis when he was a newborn baby. It means that his whole body, including his face, is affected and now, aged 2 and a half, he is unable to sit, crawl, walk or talk.

Frank’s family were provided with a free Wizzybug powered wheel-chair from Designability which he is able to operate independently. He uses his Wizzybug almost every day and it’s given him the abil-ity to be mischievous and move away from mum and dad and play when he previously relied on them to hold him and move him around. It has provided him with freedom he never had before.

Tickets for the walk are £10 per child (aged 2+) and an adult can ac-company up to three children for free. The charity then ask that each family seek sponsorship to enable them to help more children like Frank.

A Wander in Wonderland begins at 4.00pm on Monday 28 October 2019. A calm and quiet sign-in option will be available for children who prefer it and refreshments are included in the ticket price.

To take part, please visit: http://bit.ly/WanderInWonderland or search Wander in Wonderland. Visit www.designability.org.uk to find out more about Designability.

EDINGTON ARTS

The programme for classical guitarist Craig Ogden’s concert in Edington Priory Church on Saturday 5th October shows all the versatility of the instrument. Not surprisingly for a guitarist who is one of the world’s most recorded and most recognised players, he is performing pieces in an amazing range of musical styles. The programme has something in it for all musical tastes. All this will be punctuated with anecdotes and footnotes from Craig himself. A terrific evening is in store.

Full details are at www.edingtonarts.org

Adult tickets are £20, £15 and £10, while 18 and under come FREE; reserve yours by phoning Chrissy on 01380 831256, or email [email protected]. Edington Angels get their 10% discount – but tickets bought on the door on the night, will cost an extra £2 per ticket. The concert starts at 7.30pm.

The Erlestoke House Farm Shop sells fresh seasonal vegetables, eggs and local honey and preserves - plus plants, wooden planters, garden furniture, insect and bird boxes and feeders, and cards, all at very reasonable prices, including vegetables from 50p, and veg-etable boxes for £3. We also now have a stock of refurbished bicy-cles, all safety tested, at very reasonable prices.

Our produce is grown, cards and wooden goods made, and bikes refurbished by the prisoners at Erlestoke, and the shop is staffed by volunteers. The Erlestoke House Farm Shop project is run by the Erlestoke House Community Interest Company (EHCIC) for the men in HMP Erlestoke, helping them to gain skills together with fully accredited NVQ qualifications, while providing a unique outlet for the results of their work. The profits from the Farm Shop are reinvested and used to buy further supplies (such as seeds and wood), which ensures that the project is self funding. We also fund family days at the prison, when prisoners can spend time with their children.

Current vegetables in stock include: carrots, cabbages, french beans, yard long beans, cucumbers, courgettes, marrows, squash, tomatoes, beetroot, spring onions, lettuces, and herbs including basil, coriander and parsley.

VILLAGE HALL NEWS

'Article 51' Gig We spent a very enjoyable time on Saturday, September 7th at our end of summer gig being entertained by 'Article 51' in the Village Hall. Paul and Ian were on top form playing old favourites and some new numbers and before long all who attended were dancing the night away. Trustees had to stop the music and the dancing at midnight as that is when the licence ran out!! Thanks so much to Paul and Ian for all their hard work in preparing and delivering such a fun evening, and for giving their time for free to support fundraising for new chairs for the Hall. The evening raised £350.

200 Club The winner of the £50 prize for September from the 200 Club was Christine Marshall. Congratulations Christine!!

Storeroom Work on this has now been completed and we think it looks really good. Take a look next time you are in the Village Hall. Thanks to Jeff Stocks, Mark Fisher, Dave Loveys and Douglas Crisp who worked really hard on this project and brought it in on time (i.e. by the Village Show).

Management Meeting Our next six-monthly whole management meeting will take place on Wednesday, November 20th at 7pm at the Village Hall. All are welcome to attend. In particular we would like a representative from each of the regular user groups.

Christmas Bazaar I know, I haven't had my summer holiday yet either! This is just a 'keep this date' item...the Christmas Bazaar will be on Saturday, December 7th from 2pm to 4pm where we hope to make it the best ever with lots of stalls selling seasonal goods, food and gifts and others giving opportunities to win prizes...and of course there will be the raffle and as it is Christmas we hope to have some great priz-es to raffle. We may even be visited by a certain gentleman in a red coat and white beard but we haven't heard if he is available yet!

Dementia has become an illness that we seem to be talking about on a daily ba-sis. If it isn’t a loved one suffering from it is someone we know and it isn’t just the elderly; this dreadful disease affects the younger generation too. Positive results have been achieved by allowing those with dementia to remain in their own homes as they are familiar with their surroundings and this will give them much more stability.

At Mulberry Live In Care we provide highly experienced carers to give 24-hour care to our dementia clients, and the main focus is continuity! So the carer can arrive and get straight on with looking after the client. Even though the client may not recognize the carer, things are easier because the carer knows what they are doing and knows the clients’ likes and dislikes. This gives them added secu-rity, and that is key!

We provide care (short or long term) in many other areas like: • Companionship • Help for those who have suffered a Stroke • Palliative/End of life Care • Rehabilitation/Convalescence • Respite

and much, much more.

The care is based on YOUR requirements, not us telling you!

If you have ever considered Live In Care for yourself or someone you know and you would like some advise or just to chat to someone,

Worton and Marston Gardening Club

As chairman of our Worton and Marston Garden Club I am very aware of the importance of the annual Village Show. This year, the schedule was distributed in the 'Bridge Magazine'. Thankfully, this seems to have been very successful judging by the number of entries we received. On the day, as more and more people arrived at the vil-lage hall bearing boxes of vegetables, vases of flowers, plants and containers of all kinds of delicious home cooked produce, I realised that the show was going to be an excellent event. The introduction of a craft section was well supported and the photos section produced some real gems. I particularly loved the photo of the hedgehog in the garden grass. Someone is lucky to have a hedgehog in their garden. We haven't seen one here for years. I digress. The hall was soon filled and the judges arrived. About two hours later decisions were made, certificates were written out and set in place. At two thirty the doors were opened and the village people came along to see the results and enjoy teas, coffee, cake and cream and jam scones kindly supplied be garden club members and others and served out by Jane, Cheryl and Rosemary. At three thirty certificates and cups and shields were awarded to deserving entrants, the raffle was called. Yet another Vil-lage Show had finished. I wish to thank everyone who entered. Thank you everyone. I hope you enjoyed the day. Thank you also to my show committee, without their hard work it would not have hap-pened. Joy Stokes, for writing all the certificates, Jeff Stocks for working out the results, Ian Hailstone, Bill Francis, Sally Collins, Sal-ly Brooks, for being there to help with everything. Thank you to all who donated raffle prizes and to Nick for selling raffle tickets. Thank you to our sponsors: John and Jackie, Rose and Crown; Paul and Hil-ary Hams, Hams Transport, Devizes; Abbie and Lee, SW Forklifts, Devizes; Jim and Rachel, the Old Forge Garage, Worton; Andy from Bygone Window Cleaning Services, Devizes; Andrew and Tracy from Thorn Heating, Devizes. Finally a big thankyou to our Judges.

Our September meeting saw us in the Village Hall for a Pimms and food sharing evening. Each of us cooked a dish that is one of our favourites and then brought it to share with the others along with copies of the recipe. If people liked the dish they bought the recipe for 50p, with all money being donated to Open Door , the Devizes based charity that provides meals for the homeless. Everyone agreed it was a very enjoyable meeting.

Our October meeting is a film night with pop and popcorn!! The film will be Mamma Mia Here We Go Again. It will be held at the School and will start at 7pm to allow time for an interval. We are guaranteed comfier chairs than those currently in the Village Hall and another fun evening.

Sarah and Rosemary continue to arrange craft sessions that are open to anyone who wants to come along and join in. The next one of these will be weaving. Look out for information on this sepa-rately in the Bridge.

Marston Annual Footpath Walk

After a few indifferent days the evening of Friday 6th Septem-ber was perfect for our footpath walk, with late sunshine and very little breeze. Our plan had been to walk across Graham Phillips’ land towards Pudnell, and then on to Lower Road and back via a couple of paths in Erlestoke Parish. Graham’s fields and stiles were fine but on a check of the route a couple of nights earlier we were thwarted by a very large bull in one field and a very tall field of maize in another in the Erlestoke patch. Not to be put off we went to plan B and fifteen of us, including two children plus four dogs, set off from Marston bus shelter to Close Lane, across to the Horse Road and along the brook towards Worton Mill. Then over the quirky little bridge and across the Howard’s fields, meeting Gary the Goat on the way! The walk took about an hour, by which time the light was just beginning to fade but allowing plenty of time for a glass of ci-der and bread and cheese prepared by Steve, who also had a very welcome log fire blazing away in the garden. It was good to see some new faces on the walk (especially the children); hopefully next year we can attract a few more. We are lucky to have so many Public Footpaths in our parishes, and it is so important to walk them from time to time. They can so easily fall into disuse and could be lost forever. Many thanks to everyone who joined us on the walk and to Steve for welcoming us into his garden.

A Message from Richard Gamble

Wiltshire Councillor for The Lavingtons & Erlestoke Division

I may not be alone in feeling that there have been very many road works across the county in recent times.

This is, of course, a good thing. It means roads (and perhaps other infra-structure items like sewers and water mains) are being repaired. Clearly, significant money is being invested in our area for our future benefit.

Such matters are not without difficulty, however, and any road closures, partial or total, are bound to be disruptive.

You may remember that, a few weeks ago, the A360 to Salisbury was closed for a considerable period at Shrewton. The long diversion added perhaps 30 miles and at least 30 minutes on journeys to and from Salis-bury. That was no small matter if you were attending a hospital appoint-ment or trying to catch a train.

At a different time, in the opposite direction, the A342 on the way to Chippenham has been closed for what seemed to be weeks.

As I write, even more significant road closures are about to start on the A350 at Westbury. In three phases over 26 days, sections of the road through the town will be closed. The work is scheduled to continue until 11 October so, by the time you read this, there may still be some days to go before everything is back to normal.

Westbury is about 10 miles from The Lavingtons & Erlestoke but the A350 is one of the busiest roads in the county. The closure of such a road poses significant challenges in providing diversion routes for very many vehicles, large and small. The official diversions take traffic away from this area, but not all drivers will rely on official routes, so you may already have felt the effect on the A360 and the B3098.

The problem is greatest for Heavy Goods Vehicles, some of which can be up to 44 tonnes' laden weight and 18.75 metres (61.5 ft) in length. Getting one of those behemoths around our smaller roads can be difficult. Two such HGVs travelling in opposite directions can bring a modestly narrow road to a halt.

Wiltshire Council officers have been working to minimise any disruption but their task may have been impossible. I hope any difficulty or disrup-tion you may have experienced has been minimal.

You may contact me about this or any other matter by email to [email protected] or by phone on 07762 018209
