PASTOR A MESSAGE FROM OUR

The river of God is full of water This little fragment is tucked nicely into Psalm 65. I don’t know what the Psalmist has in mind with the expression “the river of God.” Do they imagine the River Jordan at its height at the end of the rainy season? Do they imagine the underground waters that feed the springs of Jerusalem? Is it something more mythic, like the rivers that flow from Eden or the primordial waters that surround the created world? I suspect it’s all of this. Life is surrounded by water. There are the seas that encompass the earth, the rains that fall, the rivers that flow, the aquifers hidden beneath the ground. We are surrounded by water. Without it we perish. But it is present in majestic abundance. And that abundance reflects the abundance of God. The vast sweeps of wildflowers in the local mountain meadows. The rich abundance of the earth beneath our feet. The power of a single grain to bring forth many. The flow of the Snohomish River. The vast swaths of forest. The flights of geese overhead. The brilliant flash of hummingbirds. All testify to the rich bounty of the world.

Psalm 65:9-13

9You visit the earth and water it,

you greatly enrich it;

the river of God is full of water;

you provide the people with grain,

for so you have prepared it.

10You water its furrows

abundantly,

settling its ridges,

softening it with showers,

and blessing its growth.

11You crown the year with your

bounty;

your wagon tracks overflow with

richness.

12The pastures of the wilderness

overflow,

the hills gird themselves with joy,

13the meadows clothe themselves

with flocks,

the valleys deck themselves with

grain,

they shout and sing together for

joy.

The river of God is full of water So what does that mean for the measly possessions to which we cling? Do we understand nothing of God’s open hands? Do we understand nothing of the rainbow and its promise that tomorrow the sun will rise? Do we understand nothing of the rain that falls on the just and the unjust? The river of God is full of water We are surrounded by riches un-told. And would we make God into a miser like us? Would we imagine that blessings are parceled out only to the deserving? That only a few are truly beloved? Would we make God in our miserly image, where people are allowed to hunger and perish because we counted them insufficiently resourceful and diligent? The river of God is full of water – and we are called to be splashing God’s bounty of grace as freely as the gift and gifts we have received!

Glad to be on the journey with you,

Presentation of Bibles!

On October 28th (Reformation Sunday!)

during worship we will celebrate the Bi-

ble Milestone for our children in 4th

grade and their families. We ask that all

parents/guardians put these dates on their

calendars:

Worship and Blessing (presentation of Bibles) - Oct. 28

Follow Up Gathering - Nov. 14, 6pm, Bring your Bibles!

This milestone provides an opportunity to introduce the

Bible to our children and demonstrate how to use it in the

home. Please pray for these children and their families

as they approach this important milestone.

Adult Forum

Join us between worship services in the Fellowship Hall

as we take an in depth look at Daniel Erlander’s “Manna

and Mercy: A Brief History of God’s Unfolding Prom-

ise to Mend the Entire Universe.” Manna and Mercy is a

100-page hand-printed paraphrase of the bible, from

Genesis to Revelation -- a graphic novel of sorts, writ-

ten with imagination, clarity, humor, and cartoons. Built

around the twin themes of food sharing and forgiveness,

it helps us to look at scripture with new eyes and redis-

cover how it can become a means of life and grace rather

than destruction and death.

EVERYBODY’S CLOSET

Everybody’s Closet will be hosting a clothing event at Advent on Saturday, October

20th. We will continue to collect clothes for this amazing community service.

Thanks Nancy Fischer for all you do!

Paddle Pilgrim: Kayaking the Fjords of Norway - November 4, Adult Forum

Dave Ellingson, whose Mississippi River, Erie Canal and Hudson River expeditions are chronicled in his popular Paddle Pilgrim books, enjoyed a

month paddling last summer on his ancestral Sogne and Hardanger Fjords. Dave will share spell-binding stories and award-winning photographs from his recent adventure in Norway. His latest book, hot off the press, will be

available for purchase!

Prayer Shawl Ministry

We have had an informal group making shawls and I would like

to provide a formal Prayer Shawl Ministry to be used by the pas-

tors, in addition to the Longest Night Service in December. The joy of a prayer shawl is to be able to wrap

someone in prayer, to be comforted and held in God’s loving embrace and be safe and warm in God’s pres-

ence.

You do not have to know how to crochet or knit because we have people willing to teach you and the patterns

are very simple. We will discuss what patterns we want to use; please bring needles, crochet hooks and yarn

that you might want to use.

We will have two different opportunities to meet and work together on the third Wednesday of the month at

11:30 am and 7 pm in the Fellowship Hall. For questions contact Jill Bossen [email protected]

The Garden of Giving is finishing up producing veggies for the

summer. There are still pumpkins, winter squash, gourds, onions,

radishes (2nd crop) and tomatoes to be harvested this fall. The total

pounds harvested as of the end of September is close to 2,400

pounds. Donations from church member’s gardens brings us to

3,200 pounds. This all is done by the hard work of 18 volunteers,

giving a total of close to 600 hours. All the produce is brought to

Maltby and Snohomish’s Food Banks. Advent Lutheran Church

has a excellent reputation for having the best organic veggies in this surrounding area.

vice desk of any Fred Meyer store.

The PieceMakers Quilters invite you to come and quilt with them!

The PieceMakers meet the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month from 12:30 - 2:00 and enjoy

coffee and treats after quilting. Knowing how to sew is not necessary!

If you are interested, please contact Cora Evans, [email protected].

2018 Stewardship Drive Pledge Cards are coming! Our Finance Team wants to remind you that Advent supports an electronic giving

program called Vanco. If you want to learn more about the electronic giving program, there is a link to

Vanco on the church’s website or you can use the QR

code here. There are a number of ways to give electron-

ically, however, when you use a debit or credit card

through Vanco, there are transaction fees that are

charged to Advent. If you donate directly from your

bank account or set up an Electronic Funds Transfer

(EFT) through your bank there are no extra fees.

Come one, come all. . . ODM’s November Gala

. . . to Open Door Ministries’ November gala, our primary fundraising event for the year. You should

be getting your invitations soon. Please be sure to reply as promptly as possible so we can get a good head

count for dinner. As always, there is a reply card included with the invitation.

This year there are a few twists added to some old favorites; we like to keep you interested and on your

toes! You’ll notice a Christmas tree in the middle of the silent auction. On the tree will be paper ornaments

representing different causes that ODM supports and holds in prayer: Cookies for Kids, Camp Rise and Shine,

Lambert House sock drive, Links and Alliances conference, Pink Prom, Monroe Prison Ministry, Trevor Pro-

ject in memory of Noah, and Worlds AIDS Day breakfast.

With all of these excellent ministry opportunities to support, it may be a difficult decision, but once you decide

on one (or more) you are invited to take down an ornament representing the cause to which you’d like to do-

nate, write your bid number and amount where indicated on the ornament, and be a decorated gift box to drop

their ornament in.

Yes, there still will be a silent auction albeit a bit scaled back from previous years, and yes there will be

beads to buy for Best of Live for a quick tax-deductible donation to ODM, and yes there will be a live auction,

hosted again by auctioneer Troy McVicker who makes the live auction fun and productive.

Lots of old friends, new friends, and new surprises await you at ODM’s November gala; please be sure

to mark your calendars for Saturday, 3 November, for ODM’s primary fundraising event, The Gala. (Yes, we

also gave it a new name!) Bring your appetite and wallet!

Registration: Until October 24, 2018 tickets are $75 per person or Table of 10 $750 After October 24, 2018 tickets are $85 per person or Table of 10 $850 To purchase tickets, you may do one of the following:

All Saints Sunday

Nov. 1 is All Saints Day. We

will be honoring those who have

passed away during this year. If

you would like your loved one’s

name included please add their

name to the All Saints Day list

located at the front desk in the

Fellowship Hall or e-mail Jen-

nifer in the church office at

[email protected] We will need

all names by Sunday, Oct. 28. Names will be

part of our prayers on Nov. 4 at worship.

Centering Prayer Opportunity

For the last year, a small group of people

have met every Monday evening in the

sanctuary here at Advent to continue the

practice of centering prayer. It is a time

of sharing scripture, 20 minutes of silence

and concluding with the Lord’s Prayer. If you are interest-

ed in this practice and would like to know more about it,

please join me at 10:10 in the sanctuary on Sunday Octo-

ber 7 for a brief introduction with time for questions. For

more information, I can be reached at

[email protected].
