CHAPTER MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Meet The Palmetto Chapter’s 1st VP—Bethany Allen Parler!

B ethany graduated from USC with a BS in Accounting in 1985 and is a CPA, CIA, CISA and CITP. She has been a member of the IIA –

Palmetto Chapter since she was a student in the mid-1980s and has worked in the internal audit field for many years, 19 of those as a Chief Audit Executive. Bethany began her career with the University of South Carolina Internal Audit Department, followed by the SC Legislative Audit Council. While with the LAC, she assisted the State Auditor’s Office and KPMG Peat Marwick on the Audit of the State of SC. SCANA subsequently hired her in conjunction with a complete reorganization of its Audit Services Department. The SC Department of Natural Resources later recruited her to start its first Internal Audit Department. At DNR she attended the SC Criminal Justice Academy and became a deputized law enforcement officer to garner the respect of its law enforcement group. This enabled her to fully-provide valuable assistance to the large, diverse agency, including breaking a few major cases for law enforcement using forensic data analytic techniques. In August 2002, the South Carolina Education Lottery hired her as its Director of Audit Services.

Bethany recently completed five years of service as the IIA District Representative for the State of SC; is a past President of the SC State Internal Auditors Association; has assisted for years in planning the SC Annual Statewide Audit Conference; served as the Team Leader on a consulting review of the SC DHHS; served as a consultant to the Kentucky Lottery Corporation in a quality assurance review of its internal audit department and of corporate-wide business risk assessment practices; served on the Quality Assurance Review Committee of a professional lottery association; was nominated into the Who’s Who of American Women, and International Who’s Who of Professionals; and, created one of the first audit manuals which tied the Standards for Professional Practice of Internal Auditing together with Generally Accepted Governmental Auditing Standards (GAGAS) to assist audit professionals in detailing compliance requirements for both sets of standards. The manual was used by many public and private entities in SC and in other states for years until the IIA created its own version. Bethany is a member of numerous professional associations, serves on several boards, and is a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. One of her favorite gigs was as den leader for her son’s cub scout troop. She is excited to assist the Palmetto Chapter in sponsoring training events as 1st VP, and has a goal of furthering student involvement at USC along with the chapter’s Academic Relations volunteers.

Bethany—Thanks for your hard work and support of

the Palmetto Chapter !!!
