Message from Pastor Eric
This fall we’ve begun the season with Broadway at the Brook. We’ve sought to make the timeless
messages of Scripture accessible to our modern ears. Many popular Broadway plays and other forms of
popular culture contain similar messages to the ones contained in the Scriptures. Broadway at the Brook
seeks to make the Gospel accessible for all!
If you haven’t invited a friend there are plenty of tickets (small printed postcards that describe the
series and give information about which play will be our modern lesson).
Here’s a recap of what you’ve missed if you haven’t been here!
9/17 – Oliver!
Oliver! is a musical based on the literary classic Oliver Twist. Oliver! opens with the children at the
workhouse dreaming of eating the same scrumptious food as the wealthy governors who own the work-
house. The children are on their way to pick up their gruel (a liquefied soupy oatmeal-like substance
made with by-products) and they sing “food! Glorious food!” Performers from Brookside Church that
are part of the Palace Youth Theatre group joined us to re-enact the scene. The Scripture lesson was one
of the most popular bible passages of all time – the 23rd Psalm. We may hunger for peace in a world of
turmoil. God can satisfy our hunger bringing us from the dark valleys to a banquet at God’s table.
9/24 – Fiddler on the Roof
Fiddler on the Roof is about a small Jewish community living in imperial Russia. This community is
shaped by their traditions. If it’s challenged it leads to conflict. Our Scripture text was Matthew 14:22-
33 where Peter walks out on the water towards Jesus. Peter stepped out of the boat! The people in Fid-
dler on the Roof stepped out of the boat to make healthy choices and “re-traditioned” for the better.
When we step out of the boat, we have nothing to lose because even when we fall (like Peter) God is
there to catch us and bring us to safety and security. We were delighted to be blessed with a singing of
“Sabbath Prayer” by the performers of Fiddler on the Roof at the Amato Center for the Arts in Milford.
This coming Sunday 10/1 is Seussical. We will hear “Alone in the Universe” as our Modern Lesson.
The Scripture text is Exodus 17 where the people of Israel are thirsty and given water to drink… from a
rock… a rock... yes, a rock? What does this mean for us all? Come and find out!
‘Broadway at the Brook’ Runs through October 15
Please invite your neighbors, co-workers, colleagues, friends, and family to join us as we continue
this exciting experience!

Church School to Tie In with Story Theme
We have started our first unit for this program year, “Giving Testimony and Witness.” This unit goes
along with our theme for the year, “This is my story, this is my song.” Testimony and witnessing is
about telling our story, not only the story of the church, but our individual stories. Testimony involves
recognizing God’s action in our lives and finding ways to express it. This unit focuses on helping the
children understand God’s presence in their lives and will use John 9:1-41, Jesus’ healing of the blind
beggar, and the beggar’s witnessing to Jesus’ healing and who Jesus was to him.
On October 22 we will start the second unit, “Jesus Calls Helpers.” Our next two units will be
stories about Jesus and will take us through Christmas. After Christmas, we will be studying some
stories that Jesus told.
Missed the Backpack Blessing?
We blessed backpacks on September 10th. If your child missed
the blessing of the backpacks, see Fran for a name tag and a sheet
of blessings that can be tucked into their lunches.
Save the Date: Talent, Treasure, and Spaghetti! Saturday, October 14
5-6:30 pm, Spaghetti Supper – The supper is a fundraiser for the youth group, and will consist of
spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, and dessert. The cost will be $7 adult, $5 child, $25 family maximum.
7:00 pm – Come one come ALL to our FREE Talent and Treasure Night at Brookside! It will be a
wonderful evening to connect with your fellow church family members! BUT we need YOU!! We need
you to share a talent you may have – do you sing? Do you tap dance? Can you tell a great story? Can
you make people laugh with your funny jokes? We want you to join us to perform! However, we are
also looking for those of you who have less than obvious talents... do you cook and want to share a
recipe? Do you collect stamps, spoons or some other cool thing? Do you take gorgeous pictures that
you would be willing to share? We will have tables set up to show off your talents as well! Treasures
on display from 6-7 pm will include photography, ham radio equipment, and quilts to name a few...

Join with Women’s Union to Bake Pies for the Fair
Fall is here and thoughts run to crisp apples, delicious homemade pies and the fel-
lowship of baking for a cause (Brookside Fair). We welcome one and all to share the
experience on Saturday, October 7, 11 am to 2 pm in Fellowship Hall. Bring your roll-
ing pins, apple peelers, paring knives, aprons, sense of humor, a sandwich cut in four to
share and a $5.00 contribution per family towards pie ingredients. Drinks, dessert and
music will be provided. A call to Sis Dunn at 497-3800 will reserve your place in the
production line. No experience necessary, there is a task for everyone!
Men Are Invited to “No Green Bananas”
This group of retired Brookside men meets on the 1st and 3rd
Tuesdays of the month at 9 am at Blake’s Restaurant (Maple &
Webster Streets) to enjoy breakfast and discussion. Join them on
Tuesdays, October 3 & 17 for good food and company. For
more info, call Herb Pence, 624-1287.
2017 Christmas at the Brook
The 2017 Christmas at the Brook will be on Saturday, November 4
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Baked Goods, Soups and Chili: Let's plan in advance this year and
make some items ahead and freeze as you have spare time. We need cookies,
baked goods, soups and chili to sell at the fair. Food is one of our best areas
to make a profit for the church, so put on those aprons and share your home-
made goods with us for the fair.
Sponsors: We will again be looking for sponsors for the fair and for the
event program. We'll also be looking for donations for the popular raffle baskets. It is never too early to
ask at your favorite restaurants and entertainment venues for gift certificates and other donations. If you
want to sponsor a themed raffle basket (Family Fun, Palace Theatre, Movie basket, etc.) please let us
know.
New – Personal Greetings in Program: New this year, we will offer personal greeting ads to run
in the event program. You can publish a holiday greeting in the event program to support the church.
Ads will be 1/4 page and cost $25. If you are interested or need more information, please contact
Volunteers: Of course, the church could not put on the fair without all the amazing help from
volunteers. We will reach out as it gets closer to the time of the fair, but please think about where and
when you might be able to help. It truly is appreciated.
Vendors: Because Christmas at the Brook has been gaining in popularity, we already have many
vendors signed up for the fair. So, if you know a crafter that might be a good fit for the event, please
invite them to fill out an application on the church's website before the booth spaces are sold out:
http://brooksidecc.info/christmas-at-the-brook-craft-fair/.
Last year we had over 45 vendors and more than 1,000 people attend the event at Brookside.
Proceeds from the fair go directly to the operating budget for the church. Last year the event brought
in nearly $7,500 after expenses. Let's beat that record!
Co-Directors of the fair again this year are Becky Boisvert (315-8614) and Lisa Brock ((215) 378-
5644). Feel free to reach out to them with any questions, thoughts or ideas. You can also email:
[email protected]. Thank you!

An Accomplishment to Be Proud of
Congratulations to Liberty Dhliwayo who completed his LPN training in August 2017
from Salton School of Nursing and Allied Science in Manchester. He is now working in
Epsom M-F and is happy to have Sundays free to be back with us at Brookside.
Thank You from Nicole
What a wonderful sendoff Brookside gave me on September 24 as I head into
retirement! I enjoyed being in worship and hearing the “Step out of the boat”
reference in Pastor Eric’s sermon, and most special was seeing so many of you
with whom I don’t interact in person on a regular basis. Getting to say goodbye
in person was a special gift. The reception/luncheon was lovely; the blessing that was conveyed upon me
most apt; and my heart was full.
I am also most appreciative of the monetary gift that was collected in my honor. I will need to think
of a meaningful way to use the gift, and I send special thanks to those of you who made donations
toward it. As for the dark chocolate sampler… I am also greatly appreciative of that gift and definitely
know how to use it to best advantage!!
I have enjoyed working and interacting with many wonderful people during my almost-24 years at
Brookside, and wish all the best to the church family as it moves forward.
With thanks and warm wishes, Nicole Grinnell
