I for one will not complain about these beautiful hot, sunny days that we have been graced with. The GCFC and the Tennis Club have extended their programs to take advantage of this wonderful weather. The GCFC will conclude their year with their annual banquet in November. The GCC Choir Lyra continue their weekly practice sessions in preparation for their fall and winter events. Our Friday dinner events are back on the event calendar. The Accordion Club is back every 4th Thursday of the month. Don’t forget the Friday night Stammtisch and Skat night. Our Seniors Group is busy all year round with various events such as Kaffeeklatsch, Bingo and Crafts. The German Canadian Club is preparing for many upcoming indoor activities and events for all our members, their families and friends. Our most popular event for October is the GCC Oktoberfest. Just recently, the Government of Canada declared October to be German Heritage Month, and the nine days commencing the Friday before Thanksgiving, every year,Oktoberfest. Through the hard work of our Oktoberfest Committee we will be hosting an event even better than in 2016. The interest in this event is phenomenal and group sales for the Saturday are very promising. Ticket sales have already started and our Saturday tickets are being already selling at a fast pace. Friday sales are also very good. I encourage everyone to make every effort to attend our Oktoberfest. Once again, the GCC Oktoberfest is being partially sponsored by Hacker Pschorr brewery as you will see when you come to the Club on October 20 th or 21 st . Please be aware that this event is a 19+ event. No minors will be admitted. With day to day pub business at the Club slightly waning over the Fall and Winter months, our Club business hours will be reduced. The Club will be open regularly Thursday and Friday. Weekend hours will be for special events. Check out all our postings to ensure that you will not forget any of the many events the German Canadian Club has to offer. October 2017

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

Dear Members and friends of the German Canadian Club

The beautiful September weather we have experienced is more conducive to the lazy days of

Summer. I for one will not complain about these beautiful hot, sunny days that we have been

graced with. The GCFC and the Tennis Club have extended their programs to take advantage of

this wonderful weather. The GCFC will conclude their year with their annual banquet in November.

The GCC Choir Lyra continue their weekly practice sessions in preparation for their fall and winter

events. Our Friday dinner events are back on the event calendar. The Accordion Club is back every

4th Thursday of the month. Don’t forget the Friday night Stammtisch and Skat night. Our Seniors

Group is busy all year round with various events such as Kaffeeklatsch, Bingo and Crafts.

The German Canadian Club is preparing for many upcoming indoor activities and events for all our

members, their families and friends. Our most popular event for October is the GCC Oktoberfest.

Just recently, the Government of Canada declared October to be German Heritage Month, and the

nine days commencing the Friday before Thanksgiving, every year,Oktoberfest. Through the hard

work of our Oktoberfest Committee we will be hosting an event even better than in 2016. The

interest in this event is phenomenal and group sales for the Saturday are very promising. Ticket

sales have already started and our Saturday tickets are being already selling at a fast pace. Friday

sales are also very good. I encourage everyone to make every effort to attend our Oktoberfest.

Once again, the GCC Oktoberfest is being partially sponsored by Hacker Pschorr brewery as you

will see when you come to the Club on October 20th or 21

st. Please be aware that this event is a

19+ event. No minors will be admitted.

With day to day pub business at the Club slightly waning over the Fall and Winter months, our Club

business hours will be reduced. The Club will be open regularly Thursday and Friday. Weekend

hours will be for special events. Check out all our postings to ensure that you will not forget any of

the many events the German Canadian Club has to offer.

The History of Oktoberfest

Crown Prince Ludwig, later to become King Ludwig I,

was married to Princess Therese of Saxony-

Hildburghausen on 12th October 1810. The citizens of

Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on

the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the

happy royal event. The fields have been named

Theresienwiese ("Theresa's fields") in honor of the

Crown Princess ever since, although the locals have

since abbreviated the name simply to the "Wies'n".

Horse races in the presence of the Royal Family

marked the close of the event that was celebrated as

a festival for the whole of Bavaria. The decision to re-

peat the horse races in the subsequent year gave rise

to the tradition of the Oktoberfest.
