Perhaps you've heard of "The Motley Fool." Not the Shakespearean
character, but the financial services company. It's a company with 250
employees. Not huge, but plenty big enough that when their CEO, Tom
Gardner issued his challenge, everybody thought it was impossible.
As 2012 began, he announced that a 20% year-end bonus would be
paid under one condition. They had to know the names of all 249 of
their colleagues. If they didn't know every name by the end of the year,
they wouldn't get the bonus.
Of course, they have some pretty bright people working at a place like
that, so surely a few of them would have the brainpower to qualify for
the bonus. But that wasn't how it worked. It wasn't enough for you to
know every name. Nobody got the bonus unless everybody knew
everybody's name. That would be impossible.
But the 20% got their attention. So everybody took the challenge
seriously. So seriously, that by the end of November everybody but one
person had learned all the names. This one person had tried as hard as
anybody, probably harder, but he just wasn't good at names.
He sent the following e-mail: "I'm the last thing standing between you
and your 20% bonus. Who wants to take me to lunch?" He got a few
invitations. People were reaching out to him like crazy. And before
long, even he could name everybody by name!
Kind of a funny story, right? It caught my attention because we have
right around 250 people we see around our church on a fairly regular
basis. How many names do you know?
The picture wall on your left as you enter our main
doors is there to help. Of course, it is never current.
We have new people showing up every Sunday. So
for those of you who don't see your picture on the
wall, please stop by the office during the week or see
Ron Frazier on Sunday mornings. Here's his picture.
(Now you have one down, 249 to go!)
I encourage you to learn as many names as possible.
Not as a mental exercise (or to earn money), but because learning a
name is the first step in getting to know a person. And getting to know
each other is important.
You've been hearing a lot about "Midweek" lately (see Debbie Sourgen's
article on page 5). One reason we are giving this such emphasis is
because it's going to help us get to know each other. On the Family
Nights in particular, you are going to meet people you have never met.
"What’s In a Name?"
The Friendly Caller Page 2
I promise. These are people you will then see on Sunday morning (or whenever) and you will be able to
greet them by name and maybe even know a little something about them.
Tom Gardner knew how important that would be at Motley Fool. He wanted to build stronger bonds
between employees, whether they worked closely with each other or not. He knew instinctively that would
make his company a more pleasant place to work. Not only that, it would make it a more productive place.
It would improve the bottom line. It would make paying all those 20% bonuses no big strain.
He was onto something. Glassdoor is a website where employees and former employees anonymously
review companies and their management. They rated Motley Fool "best place to work" among small to
midsize companies in 2015. And their turnover rate is less than 2%, remarkably low by industry standards.
I'm not sure we're the "best place to go to church" in Nampa. There is no shortage of great churches
around here. And I'm not sure our turnover rate is quite as low as 2%! But I do know that God has
blessed this church with 250+ great people and that God is sending more our way all the time. And I do
know that the better we know each other, the better we will be able to work together to do the work God
has for us to do. And have fun together in the process!

NEWSLETTER
Articles and calendar dates for the
November issue due:
NO LATER than Friday,
October 20
Submissions received after deadline will have to wait until the next issue.
Something special and NEW is planned for the Saturday before Halloween this year!
The evening of October 28 will begin with our famous "Trunk or Treat". We've done
this for many years now, but we are expecting extra kids so we are encouraging extra
adults to participate. All you need to do is show up before 6 pm and park in our
church parking lot with Halloween candy in your trunk. Decorating your car and
wearing a costume is fun, but optional. The children who start
showing up at 6 pm will all be wearing amazing costumes. Seeing
them is well worth the cost of your candy! Then the NEW part:
Our GPS building will be transformed into a SPOOK HOUSE. There will be no charge, but
we are asking for a canned food donation. The level of "scariness" will be matched with
care to the age and wishes of the children going through. The building of the SPOOK
HOUSE has been handled, but we will need some helpers that night. Let us know please
in the office. 208-467-1151 Thank you!
The Women’s Book Group meets the second
Saturday of every month at 10:15a.m. at the
Nampa Library, 3rd floor. We will be reading
Mitch Albom’s The Five People You Meet in
Heaven at our next meeting on October 14th.
Please join us, we hope to see you there!! For
more information contact Kathy Huff at 208-484-
5523 or Brenda Miller at 208-466-0535.
Are you ready to shake up your prayer life forever? Often when God
speaks, he will echo the same message through a sermon, a passage of
scripture, a chance conversation, or an unexpected encounter. When we
begin looking for these sacred echoes, we are better able to recognize
God’s voice in our life and walk more confidently in the fullness of all God
has for us.
Please join us, Wednesday evenings at 6:45 p.m., as we go through
Margaret Feinberg’s book and DVD series “The Sacred Echo”, led by Bill
Southworth. Over the next 12 weeks we will learn from Margaret how to
listen to God’s voice in our everyday life.
Priscilla Circle will
NO longer be
meeting on the 2nd
Thursday of each
month.
This month, Classics welcomes Rebecca Barr, Marketplace Manager for the Better Business Bureau, Northwest. Rebecca will be speaking about “Identity Theft”, what to know and what to do. Don’t miss this presentation!!

Each service followed by a delicious Celebration Meal!
Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a Biblical perspective do not view the money
Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, financial contributions are a way to
help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church’s mission and
ministry with a percentage of their incomes. Our Leadership Team is again recommending that we use
the New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to teach the Biblical and spiritual principles
of generous giving.
New Consecration Sunday is based on the Biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or
her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. Instead of treating
people like members of a social club who should pay their dues, we will treat people like followers of
Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages
people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, “What percentage of my
income is God calling me to give?” During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, we are asking our
attendees and members to make their financial commitments to our church’s ministry.
Every attendee and member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending
morning worship on Consecration Sunday. We urge people to attend who feel strongly opposed to
completing a card. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he
or she chooses not to fill out a card.
We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning worship our guest
leader, The Rev. Dr. Steve Tollefson will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by
members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship.
Since we make no follow-up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to
inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday worship on October 29.
Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events.

Servant of the Month
The Leadership Team met on Monday, September 11. Here are some highlights from that meeting: Jerry Cornilles, Danny Jacobsen, and Sandy Hopkins
will be completing their terms on Leadership Team at the end of this year. Applications for these three
vacancies are being accepted through October 9. The fundraiser for the new computer and software
program needed for worship projection is going well. Gifts for hurricane disaster relief (a special offering is
being received each Sunday in September) are coming in at an astounding rate. Laity Sunday will be October 22. Bill Southworth will
be preaching. Consecration Sunday will be October 29. Steve
Tollefson will be preaching. Leadership Team will meet next on Monday, October 9, 7 pm, in the GPS building. Anyone is welcome to attend.
Men’s Ministry
Our purpose: “We want each of you and each member of the
church and community to have an on-going relationship with Jesus Christ. Fifteen men met for fellowship, business and our program; TAKE THE FLAG; following God’s signals in the race of your life. The business of Methodist Men is to financially support the church’s outreach program with the Nampa Community Shelter. We do this by providing the annual Holiday Bazaar lunch. Your attendance, donations and volunteer support is greatly appreciated! If you would like to participate this year, watch for sign up sheets in the Narthex soon. Glen Hogin opened up the program by taking an obituary of a man and masterfully walking us through the man’s legacy and how his life reflected the 7 messages of each flag. The first flag: Green; signifies the start of our faith. The second flag: Yellow; is the caution flag. The third flag: Blue; the courtesy flag, was our discussion at our Tuesday meeting. We are thankful for your attendance and most important your participation. Mark your calendar for the next meeting on October 17.
Joel and Lauren Willis started showing up in our church in early 2015. They wasted
little time getting involved. Lauren has had a lot on her plate lately with her mother's
health. Joel has been everywhere, doing everything lately, so he beats his wife to
our coveted Servant of the Month award! Here is just a sampling of what Joel
has been up to: 1) He is one of the five on the team that creates the graphics that
get projected on the screen in worship. Usually that's a once a month task, but when
our computer crashed lately, he took on this task single-handedly for five weeks in a
row. 2) He serves on our Leadership Team. 3) He has been doing odd jobs around the
church lately, most recently painting the yellow on the curb at our entrance (Lauren helped). 4) He is the
one who came up with "Midweek" as the brilliant new name for our Wednesday evening program. 5) He
recorded the challenge that brought us to tears in worship on September 24. 6) He has (along with Lauren)
made a commitment to give a shot at bringing our dormant youth program back to life. (He is also the one
behind the purchase of those wonderful blue pillows in the back of the sanctuary that make worship much
more comfortable for those who suffer from lower back pain.) We are so very grateful that Joel and Lauren
showed up in church that first Sunday, and kept coming back!

Washington School Shooting Suspect Wanted to Teach Bullies a ‘Lesson’ (NBC News)
Did you know? 64% of children who are bullied do not report it. (Petrasina, Guckenburg, DeVoe, and Hansen, 2010) Bullying behavior is aggressive and includes:
An Imbalance of Power: Bullies use their power i.e. physical strength, emotional manipulation, and or social status to control or harm others. Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once.
Bullying includes actions such as making threats, physical or verbal assaults, and exploitation. Make a differ-ence by speaking up and taking a stand against bullying behaviors.

Sherman Elementary—Anyone who missed last months Classic's Luncheon missed an opportunity to hear from Dr.
Sherry Marsh (Sherman's principal) and Donna Shines (Director of the Mentoring Network.) They told us about the need
for mentoring children and youth. There are too many young people in our community who have no positive influences in
their lives. Having good role models can make a huge difference. We were given an example of a complete 180 degree
turn around of one young person from a sullen, defensive youngster to an open, inquisitive youth with a positive outlook
for the future. When there's a caring adult to encourage and be a guide, it can make all the difference in the world.
If you'd like more information, contact Donna Shines at 208-459-2844; or ask Rex or Joan Burmester or Dwayne Evanson
about their experiences as mentors.
South Middle School—We've had two cooking classes by the time you read this. The youth
have been excited about this experience and are serious about learning not only how to cook, but
why good nutrition is important to their health now and in the future. Here's a picture of the first
class in August when they learned about kitchen safety, knife skills and how to roast vegetables.
Don't forget food for the backpack program. Pick up one extra item a month when you do your
grocery shopping and drop it into the box in the entry labeled South Middle School. For those youth
neglected or living in poverty, this may keep someone from going to bed hungry, and just as
important, give them a sense that somebody cares.
Community School Outreach
Do:
Stay calm and intervene immediately. Don’t ignore it. Don’t think kids can work it out without adult help.
Understand that both the bully and the victim may be fearful of consequences for telling.
Create opportunity for them to explain their version of events in private.
Teach conflict resolution and emotional self-regulation skills. Make use of community resources. (stopbullying.gov, n.d.)
