Hi Everyone and welcome to this months edition of the Compass Newsletter. I am

always in awe of the way in which our service continually draws attention from the

wider Sunshine Coast region. The way in which we are seen to be the leader in our field.

I attended a function last week and it was so humbling to hear, “ I have never been so

proud of Compass as I am now, well done.” It is an absolute pleasure to be part of

something so special and the way in which we rollout new programs and opportunities

in our Social Enterprise space, shows why we are the shining light for others to follow. Enjoy this months article and look

forward to catching up with you soon.

In a month of rubbing shoulders

with the pollies, I was fortunate to

take Helen and Jess along to a

morning speech from the Prime

Minister of Australia, Mr Malcolm

Turnbull. Not one to shy away from the push and shove, I

was able to find a little space to firstly brief the PM on the

Compass service, and the amazing things we do for

people with disabilities here on the Coast, and secondly of

course get a photo opportunity. When you only get a one

chance to get it right, your elevator pitch needs to be spot

on. Prompted by the humble words from Ted O”Brien, it

rolled off the tongue nicely and also drew the attention of

a few of the crowd who were hasty to pass

on their business cards for a meeting.

What a great start to our Compass Assistance Dog $1 a Day program. With the help from Barrat and Jess from 91.9 Sea FM, Win TV and the Sunshine Coast Daily, the program has seen a significant rise in the branding and

awareness for these wonderful dogs. Phil , Michelle and Sharon have worked tirelessly in the Plaza shaking the donation tins and through the generous support of the community raised over $4000. The Dogs also placed 1st in the Grill’d Local Matters campaign and added another $300 to the tin along with one major businesses coming on as a Sponsor. I want to thank Tim and Kerry from Fencescape for recognising the value of these animals for the family. What a wonderful way to market your business for the next 10 years through the Compass Assistance Dogs program. If anyone should be in the need for fencing, please give them a call and support the people that support us. What this space for little FENSA the Fencescape dog, soon to hit our social media pages. During the month we also have our new Compass Assistance Dogs commercial filmed with Caitlin Bassett doing a fantastic job in the narration. The commercial will be aired over the Win TV network over the coming month.

Over September Compass Farm opened its doors to

the community to showcase the wonderful work of

our trainees and staff. Close to 250 people attended

the day and were treated to a guided tour, taking in

all the Enterprises and animals on display. I want to

congratulate Andrew and the team for the amount

of work that went into making the Farm look its

best. The Compass Farm has a growing popularity

amongst the Sunshine Coast community and I urge

everyone to come out for a tour and meet all the

wonderful trainees.

This is the pinnacle of my

role. Having the ability to

take our trainees out to

an event and give them

the opportunity to

in te rac t w i th the

community. I was

fortunate enough to be invited to speak at the

Sunshine Coast Jobs Forum hosted by Ted O’Brien

MP and Senator Michaelia Cash. The attendees were

fully engaged with our service and the trainees took

every opportunity to speak with the guests around

their experiences, and the types of meaningful

activities they’re engaged in at Compass. I couldn’t

help but stand back and watch in awe at the way in

which they held themselves, and how proud they

were to call Compass their work place. The Senator

was most impressed and expressed that she will

keep a very close eye on our service as we move

towards the impending NDIS rollout.

Greetings Everyone,

I have just returned from two

wonderful weeks in Tonga as part of

my annual leave; you may remember

I holidayed there last year and loved it

so much, I decided to return again

this year.

Tongan people are warm, welcoming

and make you feel like part of their

extended family. One of the highlights

of the holiday was attending a School

Concert at one of the local Colleges.

There were in excess of 500 students

performing their traditional dances

along with approximately 1500 family

members and spectators. It truly was

an inspiring event and we felt very

privileged to have been invited and

attend as we were the only

Westerners present.

The natural beauty of Tonga,

watching the annual migration of the

whales, experiencing the amazing

food and the Tongan people’s relaxed

approach to life certainly allowed me

to recharge my batteries and return to

work energised and ready to enjoy the

remainder of 2017. I would like to thank the

staff and members of the Leadership Team,

for stepping into my shoes in my absence

and ensuring things ran smoothly.

Staff and trainees have returned from a well

-earned rest over the September holiday

break and have all settled back into their

centres and programs. Despite the very hot

conditions, all trainees and staff seem

genuinely happy to be back participating in

their programs.

October promises to be a busy month, a

number of the centres will again host Open

Days and everyone is eagerly awaiting the

opportunity to showcase their amazing

programs and activities. The dates have

been published in this Newsletter, so please

pass the word around if you know of

individuals or families who may be

interested in attending.

For families across the Centres and

Enterprises, there will be invitations to

participate in the Progress Plan Meeting

process where we review the progress of

the trainees in order to acknowledge the

fantastic work they have been doing, to

celebrate their individual achievements and

the gaining of new skills and to identify

further goals and aspirations. Please make

the time to participate in these meetings;

this is a wonderful opportunity to discuss

your son or daughter’s progress and to

meet with their Key Workers, Team

Managers and members of the Leadership

Team.

Speaking of excitement, the 2017 Gala &

Awards Night function is fast approaching

and scheduled for Saturday 25th November.

The theme this year is ‘Wear Your Favourite

Colour’ so it will be interesting to see the

variety of colours people will be choosing

for their outfits. Until next month,

We recently held two days of staff

training at our Caloundra Centre. We

welcomed an array of presenters who brought a world of

knowledge and expertise in a variety of areas.

A special thank you to Peter Keith from Change Agency, Rebecca

Lowther from HELP Enterprises, Paul Donoghue from

Compass Caboolture, and David our CEO for making staff training a

great opportunity for staff to grow

and develop both professionally and personally.

Staff were extremely engaged in our

sessions on Team Building and

Communication, ‘Playing a bigger game’, Makaton Training, Policy and

Procedures and improving the cus-tomer experience at Compass for our

trainees and

families.

I am looking forward to seeing this training being utilised in our Centres

when I visit, by staff and improving our relationships with ourselves and

our teams in Term 4 and

beyond.

adventurous and very competent with Translink websites and Google Maps. They

use both these services to calculate journey routes and times.

Compass Farm

Special thanks to Bunnings which donated lots of items we used at our recent Golf

Day and also at The Farm.

Very exciting times ahead in the Harvest Kitchen. Kylie Southon from Palmwoods, will be joining the Harvest

Kitchen team Monday to Thursday, allowing for a second team of trainees to work in the kitchen. This is to help

with the increased number of Harvest Kitchen hamper orders due to the streamlined purchase of the Cricks

Sunshine Coast business’. It gives us an opportunity to offer the basic kitchen training program to a wider

number of trainees, with Harvest Kitchen just over doubling the amount of production from our little kitchen to

meet the increase in orders. We are very excited about this new venture, and truly hope we can smash this

challenge out of the ballpark.

The Monday and Wednesday lunch menu will continue to be available to all trainees on the Farm. The

Wednesday lunch menu has been available for quite some time now with great success. Monday’s lunch menu is

still very new and offers a sweet and a savoury option for $5, with Healthy Choices allocated to both. In case

you weren’t aware of what was available on Monday, please see the menu below and let us know if you have

any questions — Tina and the HK Team

SAVOURY OPTION – Choose One:

Vegetarian Lasagne – Gluten Free Vegetarian lasagne made using seasonal vegetables and topped with a cheesy

Compass Connections Café

The trainees at the Cafe Monday – Thursday are always excited to see other Compass trainees & families and

take pride in showing off their great skills. Many regular customers enjoy their happy service experiences with

our wonderful team of trainees.

The great team of staff at Cricks Nambour, Helen & Jess from Compass along with surprise special guests Barrat

and Jess from radio station 91.9, recently helped us celebrate a special 30th birthday for trainee Sophie Bolton.

A fabulous cake produced by Chef Madonna was a welcome treat for everyone to share.

Hope to see some Compass families catching up for Brekky on a Saturday soon!

Cheers, Lynda.

Did you know? The cafe is now open on a

Saturday from 7 am until 12 noon?

Our chef Madonna is whipping up a different spe-

cial each Saturday, last week it was Almond Crois-

sants with frangipani filling, so yummy! We have a

big Brekky on each week for $12.50, enough to

keep to the hungriest person full for the day!

We would love to see the Compass families com-

ing in for breakfast or morning tea, and we have

attached a discount voucher to this month’s

Newsletter for your use.

We have a busy month with local groups now supporting the cafe. The

Harley Owners Group love starting their day with breakfast at the Cafe

on the 3rd Sunday of each month. They enjoy the ease of parking their

motor bikes out front of the cafe and they love seeing Compass Trainee

Glen Randell on site to help with service.

A fantastic evening event held recently with the Suncoast Rod &

Custom Cars group whom combined with the Retro Rocks group for a

fun session of live music, Rock’N’Roll dancing, burgers and good

cheer They also love the safe parking at the cafe for their special cars,

the great food and space to dance outside, installing a portable dance

floor in no time!
