Happy Thanksgiving everyone! It’s hard to believe we are already at Thanksgiving. The time has flown by this year.

I want to let you know about a couple of important items coming up this month.

Home Alone and Babysitting Courses are being put on Canada Safety Council and we are happy to be hosting this event. Many people in the community have shown great interest in these courses and they filled up very fast. I encourage you to check out our website for future dates as they are organized - and register early.

The second important item in October for everyone in the community to be aware of is the upcoming Civic Election for Mayor and City Councillors on October 16. Your Community Association Board works closely with the City and Ward Councillor on many areas of concern for the community and although we will never endorse any candidate, it is important that your choice for Councillor is one that will support your Community Association. Please check out the candidate’s websites to make an informed decision on Election Day.

The last very important item to advise you of also deals with elections…the election of your next Board of Directors for your Community Association.

I have been very honoured to have worked with an amazing group of community minded people who truly wants to make Evergreen the best place to live in Calgary.

Over the past year, we have continued to build on the number of Directors we have on the Board. We have been able to put into place a huge 80’x140’ outdoor ice rink for the entire SW area to use. This winter, we had people from other communities come use our rink as it was one of the best around. We’ve been able to put on numerous events, such as the Winter Festival, Easter Egg Hunt, Parade of Garage Sales, Community Cleanup, Coffee Meets, Summer Event and Movie Screening. We have also had direct influence on obtaining crosswalks, traffic calming measures and playground signs for Evergreen to ensure everyone remains safe.

However, on Saturday, October 28 from 1 – 3 PM at Cardel Rec South Flames Room, the Board of Directors will resign and elections will be held to form our next Board of Directors who will continue to build on our past successes. I invite you to please consider putting your name up for nomination and join this amazing group of people.

Look for the notifications on our website and Newsletter and if you have any questions

on how you can serve on the Board or volunteer for our events, please feel free

t o contact me or my Vice-President directly, we will be happy to answer

all your questions. Feel free to email us directly at [email protected].

Lastly, I want to wish everyone a very happy and peaceful Thanksgiving Day.

LAST YEAR

WeaTher

This is the time of year when temperatures fluctuate and we will begin to get wet and icy conditions. Consider booking the changeover to your winter tires early to avoid the back log in November and December. Studies and experts say that when the temperature drops into the single digits, you will actually find that you will have better grip with winter tires. This will also increase your stopping distance which is very important. Don’t wait for the snow to fall!

SPeed

Speeding continues to be a problem in Evergreen. Not only with people shortcutting through Evergreen but also with our own residents in a rush to get going in the morning, and to get home in the evening. As daylight gets less at this time of year, it is more important for us to keep our speed in check to watch out for those around the schools but also for kids getting to and from home. If you are having people come to your home either visitors or contractors, please remind them to slow down as there are lots of kids in the area.

TraffIc calMIng

As you may have read in a city councillor update last month, Evergreen will be getting some traffic calming curbs installed. This is will happen in Mid-October and is tentative and dependent on signage work orders. They will be at the following locations:

• Everridge Dr. and Everwoods Gate• 24th St. and Eversyde Avenue• Everridge Dr. and Evermeadow Avenue• Everridge Dr. and Everridge Road• Everridge Dr. and Everstone Dr.

If you have any questions regarding this please contact me at [email protected].

ParkIng

If you have multiple vehicles and/or guests and need to park in front of a neighbour’s house, please take the time to knock on their door and explain your situation. If

we are aware of why cars are parked in front of our house, we can all be more accommodating. Please also park facing the correct way on the street and far from corners and bends.

lOck yOur carS!

Car prowling and theft continues to be an issue. Keep your valuables out of sight, including your garage door opener!

We are continuing to monitor the traffic in Evergreen and send in traffic service requests regarding speeding, unsafe corners and parking as often as we can. You can help with this. Read on.

If you witness any traffic issues on an ongoing basis, please take the time to both report it to me at [email protected] and also via the Traffic Service Request directly to the police. This can be done at http://www.calgary.ca/cps/Pages/Traffic/Traffic-Service-Requests.aspx

Please report road and sign issues to 311. This can be done online at http://www.calgary.ca/CS/CSC/Pages/311.aspx

If you have any traffic questions or concerns, or wish to comment on anything I have written here, you can email me at [email protected]

Thanks

8OFFICIAL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTEROctober 2017

CECA Community CornerMessage from the Board

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGAs Adam mentioned in his President’s Report, this month is the Calgary Evergreen Community Association’s Annual General Meeting. This is a very important event for our community as it sets the tone for the year ahead and gives your Board direction on the future – and what you want to see from your Association. It’s essential that we get as many members there as possible so that your Board represents what you want – we want to ensure that we represent you and provide events, services, and more that the community wants and needs. Soon, emails will go out to all our members, with information about voting and proxy instructions for those who are unable to attend. We sincerely hope that you will read the information and either join us or select your proxy.

Have you considered running for the Board yourself? We have a wonderful Board filled with excited volunteers making so many programs possible. You don’t need to have any special skills – just a desire to give back to your neighbourhood. Our Board meetings are filled with passion, laughter and an amazing dedication to doing a lot with a little. This year we have seen so many wonderful programs – the Summer Festival, Winter Festival, Easter Egg Hunt, Member’s Only Movie Screening and more – all put together by your neighbours volunteering our time and energy. We need people like you to continue to make these events possible.

If you are not interested in signing up for the Board, please purchase a membership in CECA so that we have more funds to continue to build programs with.

To wrap up, we’d like to thank our 2016/2017 CECA Board of Directors for all your hard work this past year. Your achievements have made our community a better place to live, and we truly appreciate all your time, efforts and passion. We hope to see you back for another year!

Thanks

Elise Sommer, Director-at-Large On Behalf of the CECA Board of Directors.

Babysitter and Home Alone CoursesCECA and Canada Safety Council will be hosting both a Home Alone and Babysitters Course right here in Evergreen!

Many kids stay home alone either for short periods of time or longer periods of time while parents are at work, gone out for a quick errand, or any other multitude of reasons. Ensuring they are responsible and prepared for safety situations is very important.

Babysitting is a big responsibility ensuring your child is ready to take on this important task, knowing the necessary safety procedures is critical for their safety and the safety of the children they are babysitting.

As the October courses filled up fast, we hope to offer both of these courses again in the future. Please keep an eye on the CECA website. www.myceca.ca

Halloween SafetyThe members of Calgary’s Partners for Safety: Calgary’s Child Magazine, AHS EMS, Calgary Police, Fire, 9-1-1, Bylaw, and Transit would like to remind parents and trick-or-treaters of some Halloween safety tips as October 31st approaches. Partners for Safety vehicles will be out patrolling communities on Halloween night to provide a visible safety resource for parents and trick-or-treaters.

trick-or-treaterS• Remember: all regular pedestrian rules still apply. Be sure to cross the road

at marked crosswalks, or well-lit corners only. It is safest to work your way up one side of the street, and then cross once to the other side.

• Stay away from houses that are not well lit. Do not accept rides from strangers, or enter any home you feel is unsafe.

• Let your parents know where you are going to be at all times (route) and advise them if you will be late returning.

ParentS• Be certain that young trick-or-treaters are accompanied by an adult. Older

children should stay in groups. • Pre-determine boundaries to trick-or-treat within and establish a firm time

to return home. • Advise children not to eat anything until they return home. Dispose of any

items that appear to have been tampered with, or that are not properly wrapped.

coStumeS• Choose bright colored costumes that

are highly visible. Adding reflective tape to costumes further increases visibility.

• Consider sending your children with a flashlight for additional safety and increased visibility.

• When purchasing, or making costumes, look for materials and accessories that are labeled flame-resistant.

• All costume accessories, such as sticks, rods, or wands, should be soft and flexible, with no sharp edges.

• Consider using hypoallergenic make-up kits instead of masks that may impair breathing, or vision.

• Be sure costumes are loose enough to be worn over warm clothing, but not so long that they become a tripping hazard. Costumes should not be longer than your child’s ankles.

• Ensure your child is wearing adequate foot wear that takes into consideration weather conditions and walking.

Trick-Or-TreaTing Tips a message from the federation of calgary communities Building Safe communities Program Halloween can be a fun and exciting event for kids (and adults). Below are some informative tips to increase neighbourhood safety on October 31.

residenTs: • Turn on outdoor lights and replace burnt-out bulbs. • Clear a path from the road to your front door, and

remove any potential obstacles or tripping hazards. • Keep your pets safe. Confine animals indoors away

from the unfamiliar (and spooky) guests at the front door.

• Beware of potential food allergies; consider alternative goodies.

• If you’re driving be cautious of Goblins, Ghouls and Ghosts out and about in your neighbourhood.

parenTs: • Costumes should be short enough to avoid tripping;

and be light coloured in order to be easily seen at night. Having your child wear reflective tape will also help them be better seen by drivers.

• Use non-toxic makeup for the costume instead of masks as they can reduce visibility for your child.

• Create an easy to follow route with your children and teenagers.

• Travel in groups of three or four. Young children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.

• Practice crosswalk safety. Make your way up one side of the street and cross to the other side looking both ways, don’t criss-cross back and forth.

• Double-check you child’s goodie bags to ensure everything is safe to eat.

from organic fair-trade coffee to fitness trackers and vegan restaurants, signs of the clean living movement are popping up in neighbourhoods across canada. More than a fad, it's a lifestyle transformation that's all about leading healthier and more sustainable lives. here are some tips to try the trend.

refreSh yOur hOMe. Principles like simplicity and minimalism are key, so give your home an easy clean living makeover by decluttering and editing your space. Go green by reducing your energy consumption, recycling and choosing sustainable materials for new purchases.

BOOST yOur MealS. Eating clean is less about eliminating taboo ingredients like sugar and more about wholesome balance with a varied diet that focuses on fresh and nutritious fruits and vegetables. Try adding superfoods like avocado, kale or quinoa to your favourite recipes.

hIT The gyM. With clean living, fitness and exercise are ways to get in shape and be heathier, not lose weight. Find a fun way to reap the mental and physical benefits of moving your body, like yoga, CrossFit or “piloxing” — a fusion of Pilates and boxing.

avOId drugS and alcOhOl. You don't have to give up your glass of red wine with dinner, but moderation is important. Remember to always avoid drugs and alcohol

when driving, because even small amounts can affect your ability to drive safely. This includes legal drugs, such as opioid pain relievers and benzodiazepines

prescribed for anxiety or sleep disorders.~ newscanada.com

Cleaning up the yard is easier with your GREEN CARTThis fall, enjoy the convenience of using your green cart as you get your yard and garden ready for winter. Leaves, pine cones, branches (up to 6 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length), old annuals and pumpkins can all go in the green cart for weekly collection and will be turned into nutrient rich compost.

Three STeP checklIST fOr fall yard WaSTe

1. Fill your green cart first. Yard waste can go directly inside the cart; there’s no need to bag it first.

2. If your cart is full, simply use paper yard waste bags and roll down the top. Home and garden or grocery stores sell paper yard waste bags. They’re usually sold in packs of five.

Please don’t use plastic garbage bags. These bags will not be collected since they contaminate the compost.

3. Place the bags approx. one foot away from the cart for collection, so you can walk between the cart and the bag. Bags should be easily lifted (max. 20 kg).

During busy fall periods, to ensure our crews stay on schedule we may not be able to collect all of your extra yard waste bags right away. Please leave them out and we’ll pick them up as soon as possible.

Other options for disposing of yard waste are available at

AB’s have been forced to do more with less; and they expect their gov’t to do the same. If the NDP want to attract investment and jobs back to AB, it must develop a credible plan to restrain spending, and pay off their ballooning debt. Our caucus is working hard to hold the NDP to account while

offering positive and proactive solutions as we work to restore the Alberta Advantage and get our economy back on track!

dO aB’S deServe BeTTer In educaTIOn? As UCP Education Advocate, I have been listening carefully to serious concerns of students and families; and they have told me that the lack of consultation with school boards, and poor communication around Bill 1, means that parents had a very short timeframe to react to significant transportation and time changes for the school year. They have told me that the NDP’s ever climbing carbon tax will cost school boards even more millions of dollars that they simply cannot afford; and that the same carbon tax is set to increase yet again on January 1, which will leave parents with even less money for after school activities, school lunches, and more. When it comes to supporting choice in education, the NDP had to be embarrassed into supporting a legislative motion on the matter. All of which leads to the question: do Albertans deserve better?

IMPROvING sTORMwATER dRAINAGE FOR sOUTHwEsT COMMUNITIEs The Community Drainage Improvements program was launched in 2010 to mitigate flooding in areas throughout the city. Drainage studies were undertaken to identify solutions for communities frequently hit by flooding due to extreme rainfall. Such solutions can include adding additional storm drainage pipes, increasing the size of pipes, and adding wet or dry storm ponds to help manage stormwater.

In recent years the communities of Woodlands, Woodbine, Cedarbrae and Braeside have experienced an unusually high number of high volume rainfall events.

These communities currently have a storm level service of a one-in-five year rainfall event or less. That means that there is a 20 percent chance (or greater) that the storm system will not handle rainfall events causing local flooding in any given year.

Drainage improvements being looked at for these communities target a 1-in-50 year level of service. Once upgrades are in place there will be a two percent chance in any given year that rain events would overwhelm the storm system.

Installation of a dry pondThe City of Calgary will be constructing a new dry pond in the fields located east of the John Ware and St. Benedict schools. This dry pond will greatly reduce flooding during extreme rain events, specifically the flooding that occurs at the intersection of Southland Drive and Braeside Drive. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2017 with completion by fall of 2018. The fields will remain inaccessible to the public for the entire duration of construction.

Construction impacts• Construction of the dry pond consists of earthworks (excavation and grading),

underground piping and landscaping. Construction impacts will include:• Increased traffic to site (construction crews, trucks hauling materials to and from

site) on Southland Drive and on Palliser Drive• Construction noise• Fields will remain fenced off and closed to the public for the duration of construction• Traffic and sidewalk detours

Community benefitsThe dry pond will significantly reduce flooding that occurs at Southland Drive and Palliser Drive, and along Braeside Drive. During heavy rainfall, overall vehicle and pedestrian safety will be improved, traffic congestion reduced and emergency vehicle access unimpeded by flooding. John Ware and St. Benedict schools will each receive a new soccer field (two in total) and a new baseball diamond will be built allowing for more recreational opportunities for the community.

5 Simple Fal l Gardening Tips & TricksAlthough it may seem like your plants are fading away, there is a lot you can do to make the garden ready to embrace cooler temperatures and flourish in spring.

1) fertilizing the lawn: Late October when the ground starts to freeze is a great time to fertilize the lawn. The grass crowns will store the fertilizer, increasing the chances for growth in the spring.

2) Soaking evergreens: As the sun shines on evergreen trees in the spring, they wake up and ask the roots for water. If there is no water, the foliage will often turn brown. Soaking your evergreens in the fall will help prevent this from happening.

3) Plant perennials: It may not seem like a good time to plant perennials, but the beginning of September is great because the plants often go on sale. Perennials have a month-and-a-half to establish themselves in the ground.

4) Plant bulbs: September is bulb planting month.

5) get great garlic: Plant garlic in the fall for the best taste.

While most of us do our best to be good neighbours, sometimes we need a little guidance to do the right thing. That’s where the Community Standards Bylaw comes in. Updated at the end of 2016, the bylaw promotes good neighbour

relationships and addresses community concerns by regulating noise, fire pit use, untidy properties, weeds and grass, graffiti—and nuisances such as flyers.

One of the areas updated in the 2016 review refers to flyers, including non-commercial flyers. If you have a ‘no flyer’ sign visibly posted at your home, it’s a violation of the bylaw to deliver flyers to your door. With the municipal election just around the corner, you should be aware that election advertising is exempt from this bylaw along with newspaper subscriptions, community newsletters and information provided by government and elected officials.

For more information, visit Calgary.ca and enter Community Standards Bylaw in the search bar. If you do continue to receive flyers despite having a ‘no flyer’ sign at your home, you can call 311 or submit a service request using our 311 app or on The City’s web site.
