If you have a cookoff coming up in the month of December your cookoff information must be in the hands of the CASI Events Coordinator, Nancy Hewlett, by October 15th to meet the cookoff ad-vertising requirement.

CASI Hot Line888-CASIHOT

The start of October signals the beginning of a new chili year, and closes the door to another very special year for CASI. It was great to see many familiar faces in Austin, and meet some of the new leaders from across our organization, at the Great

Peppers Meeting. The Hill Country Pods deserve a HUGE thank you for being such gracious hosts.

With the Great Peppers Meeting wrapped up, I would like to take a minute to recognize our retiring directors. To Tim Collier, Harvey West, David “Budda” Manske, Richard Knight, and Ted Fichtl, for the entire organization I say thank you. You each served at a time when CASI most needed your talents and expertise, and you did it with selflessness and hard work.

I would also like to thank Susan Armand for the work that she has done over the last year. As many are aware, Susan is our director over all things merchandise for both the CASI online store and the main concession stand at TICC, a member of a few key committees, and an integral part of the Friends of CASI program. In July, Ted Fichtl announced that he was going to be out indefinitely, and Susan stepped into the interim ED role without any hesitation. She was responsible for all Pod Credential Reports, accepting all remaining...

ATTENTION2015 Rule Change

for Qualified Cooks at TICC If your CASI membership expires on or before November 5, 2016, and you think you will be attending TICC as a qualified cook, you MUST make sure your dues are paid by SEPTEMBER 30th. If your dues are NOT paid by September 30th you will not be allowed to cook. Don’t put a damper on your trip to TICC because you did not pay your dues in time.

You will not be able to pay your dues at TICC! If you are not sure when your dues expire, log in to www.mychili.org and look up your membership status. Once you have logged in, click on “Display CASI Membership Information.” You can quickly and easily pay your dues by going to www.casichili.net and clicking on “Join.” You may also contact Keith Longabaugh at [email protected] or 972.841.1630 to discuss your membership status.

Susan: Congrats on the ED position! You picked the PER-FECT year to learn all about TICC because it is going to be a busy and memorable year.Keith: Thank you. I’m excited to be the ED and ready to get to work. There’s a lot of things going on at TICC this year. I really get to begin the week with the Cookin’ for CASI cookoff on Tuesday hosted by the 2018 Great Peppers Meeting host Pods. Six pods are working on this and from what I know it’s going to be a great day.

Susan: All I can say is that being on the “inside” during planning I know there is a lot the group is preparing for and trying to make it different. (Breakfast tacos will be served to cooks.) Also, I just heard about the NEW event the Proud of Texas Pod is organizing. It’s called “Sharp Dressed Man Contest” and it sounds like it will be hysterical! The ladies will decorate a bra and have their man model it, and then the bras will be auctioned off. I can see you modeling a blinged-out bra with pride, Keith! But if you play 42, then you can’t model because it is at the same time. Keith: Thanks for that vote of encouragement! I hope that everyone is ready to enter the NIGHT TIME LIGHTED PARADE on Wednesday evening starting at 9 pm. I really want to see a lot of entries this year. I have finished the awards and I think they are really great. They light up! I hope people are planning to go overboard with their decorations. Do you think we should mention that ALL the stores have their Halloween stuff out and that even the dollar stores are carrying cheap battery-powered lights now?Susan: I think you just did! It should be quite a show and I’m excited to see it. Did you hear about the Champions Challenge on Thursday? Past TICC winners will compete with each other. Cindy Reed-Wilkins is organizing it and how fun will it be to taste all of the past winners’ chili? Keith: I think it’s going to be interesting to see who comes out on top and from what I understand there are going to be quite a few of the past champions cooking that day. I think on Thursday the Tequila Rose Dessert Contest is also happening. Do you have any details on that contest? In the past I have been lucky enough to try several of them and they are great.Susan: Turn in is at 1pm at the Mexene Judging Pavilion and don’t forget you have to use Tequila Rose in your dessert. Can you believe we get three days of concerts this year?! Starting on Thursday, we'll have Casey Pilgreen, Larry Joe Taylor, and Prophets and Outlaws. This is going to be great! Keith: We have a great lineup of bands this year. There are many different events going on at the Ranch this year and I encourage everyone to get out and participate and help make this 50th anniversary celebration one to remember. It’s going to be a great party in the desert this year, and I’m really looking forward to it.

MEMBERSHIP REPORTPlease join me in saying a big WELCOME and

thank you to all our new annual, life, and corporate members.

CASI takes on a new look and feel, and new tech-nology – the CASI MEMBERS SYSTEM (CMS)!

Please take some time and visit www.casichili.net. Besides the new look and feel, which we have had for quite some time, the database support system is new. There are added features and enhancements

in the new system that will help you make CCO requests, submit CCO re-sults, and update your membership profile. I figure that we will have some challenges along the way, but nothing that we can’t overcome.

CHILI, CHARITY and FUN is what it’s all about! And, to all our mem-bers who have renewed their membership, thank you for your continued support of CASI and the local charities.

Please note, you can pay your annual dues by PayPal without having a PayPal account. Just click on the “Join” tab on our website – that’s www.casichili.net – to join or renew your membership. If you do not remember your login or password, please contact me.

Remember, if you’re moving, please let us know. Your Terlingua Trails will not follow you without an address change. I urge everyone to take advantage of the NEW CASI Members System, or CMS. You can check your personal information and points, access the CASI organization groups and CASI history, and get contact numbers and addresses for your fellow members of the CASI family. If I can be of any assistance, please contact me by phone at 972.841.1630, email [email protected], or snail mail at 608 Acorn St, Pilot Point, TX 76258.Keith LongabaughMembership Director

applications for Director candidates, putting together the Director reports and designing the layout of the GPM book, and working with Mike Wat-kins on the final poster design. Susan was able to accomplish all of these duties in an extraordinary fashion. When you see Susan at a cookoff in the future, be sure to give her a hug and a well-deserved pat on the back!!

Also, I would like to welcome in a new group of Directors: Scotty Parker, Randy Pittman, Rick Powell, and Nancy Hewlett, along with our new Executive Director, Keith Karaff. This group brings a good blend of CASI experience, new and fresh ideas, and a determination to help CASI continue to grow.

Finally, to the CASI members: This organization is truly one of a kind. To have people who come together weekend after weekend rais-ing money for charity the way we do is amazing. You are the backbone of this organization, and continue to successfully blend the CASI Vision Statement – To make a positive difference with each pot of chili – with our Motto – Chili, Charity, and Fun!!!

DONATIONS & MEMORIALS To the CASI Scholarship Fund

Chiliheads of Arizona as a thank-you for the delegate serving at GPM for them

Tim and Connie Collier in memory of Delora Goin

Sharon and Mel Neff in memory of Mike Sweet and Delora Goin

As my time as TICC Champion draws to a close, I want to thank every-one associated with the CASI organization for allowing me to serve as their ambassador the past twelve months. I sincerely hope that I have fulfilled the expectations associated with the honor.

This past year has been amazing. I have met many wonderful people in my travels attending CCOs across this glorious country of ours, and I have made many new lifetime friendships. I especially want to thank all of the chili cooks for accepting a virtual newbie into their ranks as the TICC Champion. I had many reservations after winning whether I could be worthy of the position. There are cooks who have attended TICC for thirty or more years that haven’t reached that pinnacle, and at times during this past year I have actually felt ashamed for winning. But not once did I meet anyone who didn’t treat me with respect and call me Champ. It took me half of the year before I could accept that complement and not feel somewhat embar-rassed. But as time passed I overcame my self-imposed ridicule and became proud to display my banners and the 2015 TICC Chili Trophy and wear my 2015 TICC Championship shirt.

In just a few weeks we will all gather at Rancho CASI de los Chisos to enjoy the festive atmosphere, converse with friends we only infrequently see and try our luck at winning the 50th TICC. By Saturday night another chili cook will be named champion and I will join the ranks of former champions. But I don’t believe my obligations will end. I feel that once a champion, always a champion, and you should continue to present your-self in that manner. This past year has taught me that it takes a lot of hard work to keep this organization functioning. I intend to continue my efforts to spread our motto to everyone I meet, attend as many CCOs as possible, and offer my help to insure the continued success of CASI.

I wish luck to each and every cook who participates this year at TICC and to the new champion, congratulations! Thanks again for everyone’s support this year. What an amazing family this organization has been to me.

Jumping at any opportunityThere are a few things I need to say and this may be my only oppor-

tunity, so I’m jumping while I can. CASI needs its members’ help. I’m not talking about participating in cookoffs, or stepping up as a pod offi-cer, or joining pods, or even monetary donations, even though all of these are very important. I’m talking about extending your talents, whatever they are, to making CASI better.

When I first started cooking CASI, I was just a few months in and was trying to meet people and learn as much as I could about them, their history with CASI, and about CASI, since I knew relatively noth-ing. About my third or fourth cookoff, I set up by a group of people that appeared fairly diverse. There were younger cooks as well as some seasoned cooks so I thought this would be a good learning opportunity. At one point I asked one cook what they did as their occupation, then was reprimanded by one of the CASI old timers for asking that question. I was told that people used CASI as a way to hide from their everyday life and we don’t share what we do for a living. This never made sense to me since I don’t have anything to hide from anyone, and knowing what someone does can only help us should we need their expertise. This “paddling” I took has stuck with me through my CASI life. It didn’t make sense to me then, and doesn’t make sense to me now.

I have witnessed many opportunities where someone with experience could make CASI, or a cookoff, or a pod even better. For instance, I had a discussion a few weeks ago with Kris Stewart, who sits on the Online Store committee with me. She has been on this committee from day one, so we’ve developed both a working relationship as well as a personal one. She asked me about the candidates running and if I knew anything about them. During our discussion, she started telling me about her Win-ner’s Committee and how she has developed a mentoring program for the TICC winner. She explained what she implemented and how it has worked. Kris suggested the Board adopt this type of mentoring system for the newly elected directors to help them adapt and adjust in a smooth way. I asked her if she would help me develop the system and she was

more than willing to do so. She has used her expertise in management and adaptability in a way that is helping CASI. Another example is that I, like many of you, have limited computer skills. I can do some things quite well while with others I feel totally inept. I have had to get the CASI logo reformatted to be used for many applications and this type of reformatting skill was totally beyond my ability. I knew Mike Watkins was proficient in this, so I looked to him for help. As it turns out, he has not only helped with reformatting the CASI logo, but also making the 50th logo better and more adaptable for a wide range of uses; he has also helped with ads and photos for the Terlingua Trails. It took no time for me to be turning to him for assistance in many other CASI functions, and he has taken on each request with enthusiasm and gusto. I found out just recently that some of these things he has done for us cost him money, which he quietly took care of and never asked for reimbursement. He has been a CASI attribute for many years, help-ing behind the scenes and almost invisibly. He has used his expertise in computers in a way that is helping CASI. These are just two of many examples. To give to CASI in this way, without any desire for acknowledgement or reimbursement, and sincerely from the heart in a selfless way, is how CASI gets stronger and better. When you see Kris or Mike, make sure you shake their hands, pat them on the back, or give them a hug because they are true and honest exam-ples of being philanthropic. There are jobs that need to be done in CASI and if you have any type of skill that could help CASI grow or be a better organization, or help CASI get stronger, I encourage you to tell people what you could do. Be it writing, or computer skills, or financial skills, or legal skills, or artistic, musical, restaurant or bar skills, if you are good at something, chances are there is a special spot for you. But unless you tell us what you can do, your expertise will go unnoticed. We’ve all heard the phrase, “You are only as strong as your weakest link,” so please don’t be that weak CASI link. Step up and share your talents.

Susan Armand

The last few months have been an eye-opening experience for this interim ED. I accepted this position with vigor and enthu-siasm when the Board asked me to step up. I had some pretty big shoes to fill, but my goal was to give it my best effort to fulfill the duties of the ED position through the end of the 50th TICC. There have been some challenges and I am pleased that I have not failed at any of them. I may have stumbled here and there, but I have persevered.

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Ted, who has been a constant source of support in my CASI life for much longer than this interim position. He has taken the time during BOTH of his recent surgeries to hold me up and keep me moving forward. There are times when we talk business and times when we talk life, but each

time we talk I leave having learned something from him. He is one tough CASI-loving man and one to honestly admire.

The last few months have also been a time to connect with Richard on a different level. He has been patient with me and has been an excel-lent mentor. Over the last two years I have seen him work through details and finances and pro-jections, showing that he is one brilliant busi-nessman. He’s tough and challenging at times, and he has opinions that may or may not con-nect with mine, but he’s always fair and calm. Some people have niches and this is definitely his. It has been a joy to get to know Richard and Carol beyond chili.

I can say, truthfully, that taking on the ED job has been rewarding. I have had to be a quick study and all-in-all I feel happy that I’ve been

able to uphold the position. I realize I still have TICC to get through and I am looking forward to it.

One more quick thanks to my husband, Ken. Talk about strong! He’s not only had to deal with me talking CASI almost 24/7 for the past few months, but has been the trampoline I’ve bounced thoughts and ideas off. All this while still taking care of me and being an amaz-ing husband.

It has been an honor to be able to be the interim ED and I look forward to the next few months and TICC. After that, I feel confident that Keith Karaff and I will enjoy working together.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – What started out as a cool and “looked like rain” day ended up pretty nice! ’Cept for the wind. Twenty-one cooks from Nebraska, Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, and Iowa converged at The Blind Pig on DATE for a chance at being the state champ in CASI chili or salsa! Len Deevers of Ottumwa, IA was the 2016 Iowa State Chili Champ, followed by Gary Christensen of Clear Lake, IA and Tim Hoff-man of Oxford, WI. Jerica Christensen of Cedar Rapids won showman-ship with Tool Time Chili, and Makayla Kaune of Cedar Rapids was the 2016 Iowa State Salsa Champ!

Over $400 was raised for Tanager Place. We had a special guest show up; the reigning CASI Champion, James Burns, and his wife Sherry, of Point, TX enjoyed the cool weather and the coo-koff. It was great to visit with them.

SPACE CITY POD had a very successful cookoff in June. Thank you to everyone who came out to cook, judge, swim, sing, dance, and have a great time. Houston Elks Lodge 151 hosted the event again this year. The cookoff was able to provide support to two chari-ties – Texas Elks Children’s Services and Texas Equusearch. Texas Elks Children’s Services, located in Gonzales, Texas, has been serving spe-cial needs children since 1987. The Lodge Sweetheart makes this their #1 charity and Space City Pod was happy to support such a great cause. Texas Equusearch started in 2000 with the purpose to provide volunteer horse-mounted search and recovery for lost and missing persons. This charity is funded solely by donations and Space City was happy to help. Above, Kent Cavender, incoming GP; Al Olmos, Elks Lodge Sweetheart; Deanna Johnson, pod treasurer; and Joy Lister, Elks Exalted Ruler. All are Elks members. Highway Cleanup This year’s highway cleanup is scheduled

for Thursday, November 3. I’d like to encour-age all cooks and their friends to come out and join us again this year. We will meet at the Ranch entrance at 8am. Once at the gate, we’ll ask you to write your name on a tablet so that we can give the information to the re-sponsible Director and so that I can scribe the appropriate follow-up article for the Terlingua Trails. There will also be pictures so bring your smile.

The effort is not difficult at all and there will be chase vehicles there to shuttle folks back and forth so that no one will walk very fast or very far at all. Indeed, last year many of the folks simply chose to walk rather than ride.

There will be roadside prizes for folks to find and these should make your Thursday a really fun day once back at camp. We will scatter markers along the roadside that can be found as you gather up rubbish. Just bring in your marker at the end of the exercise and you’ll get a prize.

If you have any questions or require more information, please feel free to call Bud Bar-rick at 575.382.5107 or email me at [email protected]. I look forward to seeing you there.

Beer and Wine Don’t haul a motor home full of beer and wine down to Terlingua. Our great sponsors have generously provided for the judging and we owe it to them to buy their products on site. We will have special bulk pack-age prices available to our members to help accomplish this. We promise it will be totally competitive and waiting for you when you get there. The prices in that area are lower than the Metroplex. L&F Distributing, Woodbridge Wines, and Glazer/Permian come out and work hard for us. They are all Gold Level Sponsors, which means they each contribute $10,000 to CASI each year. Please make it a point to thank these and our other sponsors. Take this opportunity to purchase beer for your Pod event. Check with Kris Hudspeth at [email protected] or Keith Long-abaugh at [email protected].

Toys for Tots Don’t forget to bring your unwrapped toys for children (ages 3-10) to TICC this year. If you want to include some wrapping paper with your toys, that would be great. Hey, hey there all. I hope that everyone is having a safe and fun year. I want to make sure that everyone is aware of one of the events at TICC this year. On Wednesday, November 2, we are having the first Night-Time Lighted Golf Cart Parade. Staging will begin at 8 pm on the side road leading to the stage. The parade begins at 9 pm. This year’s theme is ’50s Roswell Alien Invasion.

Many of the stores have their Halloween decorations out right now and inexpensive, battery powered lights are available. I have even seen the battery lights at the dollar stores in town.

The parade will end at the Louisiana Hot Sauce pavilion in Krazy Flats and is to be followed up by a 1950s costume party and dance.

There will be three prizes awarded for the Parade: Most Imaginative, Best Theme, and Best Overall. Winners will be revealed on Wednesday evening in the Louisiana Hot Sauce pavilion prior to the costume arty. Sign up for the parade will begin on Tuesday, November 1, at the Krazy Flats Saloon, and you can also sign up at the Mexene Judging Pavilion on that Tuesday morning.

So everyone get those golf carts and ATVs ready. Find all the lights you can and let’s make this a fantastic night. Thanks, everyone!Keith Karaff

Tequila Rose Party The Tequila Rose Party is open to all women at Rancho CASI de los Chisos. It will be held on Wednesday, November 2nd at 7 pm. The theme this year is Golden Terlingua Nights. This is a night of camaraderie and fun, with sprinkles of surprises along the way. As in the past, we plan to entertain and touch your heart. The dress code is anything that reflects the flavors of Tequila Rose or anything golden. As always there will be a best dressed award. You must bring one bottle of Tequila Rose per two ladies. The fun begins at 7 pm sharp in the judging pavilion. Make plans to join us on this special night.

Tequila in Terlingua Society PartyJoin us behind the TICC Stage on Wednesday, November 2nd at 7 pm. for the Tequila in Terlingua Society Party. Join the men of Terlingua as we cel-ebrate life, liberty, and male bonding without the trappings of tablecloths, roses or poems. Strictly unstructured fun, for the men of Rancho CASI de los Chisos! We have no dress code and we will not cook a thing! We will have a limited supply of Tequila and Outlaw Cigars. Maybe or maybe not door prizes. Bring a bottle of tequila to share shots, a handful of cigars, and your favorite snack to share. Let the Tequila Flow and Smoke Blow!!!!

Salsa Event 2016Again this year we will have the Traditional and Non-Traditional catego-ries in the Salsa Event at TICC. See descriptions below.- $15 per entry.- Turn in at 1pm for both.- Top 5 in each category announced.Traditional SalsaSalsa is the Spanish word for sauce, and in Mexico it refers to sauces that are used as an ingredient for a variety of dishes and as a condiment. It is normally a spicy blend of tomatoes, onions, and hot peppers finely pureed or cooked to a liquid-like consistency. Secondary ingredients are tradition-ally garlic, salt, cilantro (optional).Non-Traditional SalsaPico de gallo, verde (green), Greek, fruit-based, etc. Anything goes here, so be creative and have fun. Any fruit, vegetable, or spice is acceptable (pineapple, ginger, bell pepper, etc). In addition, non-traditional ingredi-ents such as Worcestershire sauce and tequila are perfectly acceptable as long as the end product tastes great.Salsa Judging Rules and Characteristics- Color/Appearance – is the product attractive and visually appealing?- Smell/Aroma – the product should have a pleasant aroma, without one ingredient overpowering the others.- Flavor – independent of spiciness, the product should be delicious.- Viscosity/Texture – do you like the texture in terms of smooth, crunchy, easy to dip, etc?- Heat/Spiciness – CASI is looking for a “classic” level of heat, not ex-treme or mind-numbing heat – mild, medium, and hot are all fine, but try not to destroy the judges’ taste buds!Prizes ($1,600 total)- 1st in each category = $350- 2nd in each category = $250- 3rd in each category = $150- 4th in each category = $50- 5th in each category = gift box of salsa

In January of 2015, the CASI Board of Direc-tors (BoD) began an effort to consider replacing the CASI Information System (CIS) and develop a new package of software applications and website. CASI Membership System (CMS), this being a set of software applications and website to support the needs of membership, the CASI staff, and to promote super interaction with the public.

The BOD authorized setting up an Information Technology (IT) Committee from within our mem-bership. The committee goals were to:

--Activate the new CASI environment by No-vember 2016, eighteen months later,

--Field a system that is compatible with the advances in technology,

--Field a system that does not need a sophisti-cated programmer to develop and maintain, and

--Control current and future costs. In a volunteer organization, where the salaries

are pretty slim, it should not come as a surprise that putting together an IT committee was in and of itself a challenge. It became a natural to take advantage of the work done by Shelley Kroencke a couple of years ago and Dave Hewlett stepped up as did a couple others. The go to crew became Shelley and Dave for software applications, and Richard Knight became the web page czar and I was the referee.

The IT gang as a first step had to find on line tools to do CASI membership information processing and a web hosting environment to get it out there on the web so the public, members and CASI staff could access it. The research phase of the effort looked in lots of corners. For, example, GoDaddy

was not considered the right web hosting environ-ment because it didn’t offer the depth of capability desired. Weebly was selected because it is simple, elegant and does most everything. Finding a tool for CASI membership information processing was far more difficult and took a lot longer. There are no readymade packages out there that do anywhere near what CASI needs done, but we had to check out several before we came to that conclusion. The IT group sampled on line data management services and settled on CASPIO because it was cost effective, given what we knew needed to be done and does not require a programmer to use. Dave and Shelley were comfortable using CASPIO’s software configuration instructions which are about the same as the macros on a spreadsheet. Both Weebly and CASPIO are solid companies that keep their products abreast of technology advances and maintain compatibility with Windows and Apple systems.

As to costs, we’ve spent about $3,000 to date, in-cluding the research phase, development and testing. That, by the way, was within the projected budget. The IT group understands what the cost drivers are and knows how to manage them. Future costs will be openly reflected in the annual CASI budget. Very little free stuff remains out there and that which is free has really complicated limitations.

With the testing phase recently completed, the group was confident about what we have and where we are at this point. So, the entire system was being demonstrated at the 2016 Great Pepper’s meeting. Everything means Website casichili.net public func-tions, member functions and resources (like renew

membership and report cookoff results) and staff function (Like Tallymaster, Events/Upcomings and membership). The new system CMS and the original system CIS will both be open until just after TICC when CIS will shut down. We need both systems running to be sure all the information necessary to run TICC is available, so for safety’s sake they will both be alive.

It would be a mistake not to say a HUGE thank you to Jim Stateczny for his support along the way. As one would expect from a CASI icon, Jim made this trek to a new environment as easy as possible for the IT Committee.

Let me close out by making a few points loud and clear so everyBoDy understands:

--The CMS system being made available is not perfect, neither was CIS. As in all projects of this type there will be bugs and glitches. Even Microsoft has bugs and glitches. Be patient. Send your comments/complaints to the IT Committee. There will be fixes and remedies implemented.

--The CMS system is not a mirror of CIS. Don’t expect it to use the same steps, sequences or screens as CIS. Yes, everyone will have a bit to learn.

--Change is inevitable. Answering the need for new a CASI web site and a new set of software was also inevitable. There was no avoiding it. The work it took to get to this point has been magnificent. It will continue in the future.

Becky Allen Takes Directors ChallengeIt was a hot, steamy morning among the hills and weirdness of Austin,

Texas, on the Sunday following the Great Peppers meeting. The directors and a few dedicated cooks gathered to see which director would reign supreme that day. The directors, with the help of their coaches, set up in the parking lot at the American Legion, Knebel Post to begin the challenge.

The atmosphere was tense and quiet, probably because it was early and we had been up late. After a while everyone began to wake up. More than 40 showed up to compete and we knew the competition was going to be fierce. Out-going Prez Richard Knight was there with his posse. Returning champ and out-going director Tim Collier was there hoping to claim another victory. Interim ED Susan Armand was there coming off a very successful GP meeting and thinking she wanted to take home the traveling outhouse.

Ranch Manager Don Hoy tried to intimidate by pulling his motor home into the parking lot. Treasurer Mary Ellen Gillen arrived with that “I’m gonna take you down” look. Secretary Cindy Noe was prepared to cook, looking all rested and relaxed. Incoming Prez Kris Hudspeth was traveling booth to booth, visit-ing, saying hello, and possibly looking for hints, secrets and weaknesses in the competition.

Newly appointed VP Keith Longabaugh was one of the first to arrive. Ru-mor has it he got there early to find the best vantage point to view his competi-

tion. Newbie directors Nancy Hewlett, Allan (Scotty) Parker, Randy Pittman, and incoming ED Keith Karaff arrived on site bracing for the day’s mudslinging, trash-talking, and harassment. It was going to be brutal.

As we got closer to turn in, the coaches were cracking the whips. (At least mine was.) It was now turn in time and all we could do was wait for the decision of the brutal and unforgiving judging process. An eternity later, all was finished and we gathered in the hall eagerly awaiting the decisions.

About halfway through, the one director who has always worked and run cookoffs but not cooked, Scotty, placed and received his first point. The places kept coming and you could tell the directors were resigned to their fate. Surpris-ingly, Don Hoy pulled out a second place finish to win this year’s directors chal-lenge. Becky Allen pulled out the win that day.

Cookoff promoter Ken Rodd did a fantastic job. A special thanks goes out to the American Legion- Knebel Post for allowing us to invade for a few hours.

It was a great day. We wearily made the drive home, tired but calm. For me, it was an easy drive home because the Texans beat da Bears. All is right with the world.

WELCOME TO THE FUTURE!

Page 28 Terlingua Trails October 2016

In 2004, I ran for a position on the Board of Directors for CASI. That year the Great Peppers Meeting was held in Baltimore, MD. During the round table for the candidates, everyone asked me what skills I had and what position on the Board was I best suited for. My comment was Ranch Manager (Jimmy Taylor was the Ranch Manager at that time and I knew that position was not available). As a Registered Professional

Land Surveyor in the State of Texas, involved with many aspects of construction, from road layout, construction staking, subdivision development, etc., the position of Ranch Manager would have been a good fit. My next response was that I was least qualified to be the editor of the Terlingua Trails. Lo and behold, I was elected to a two-year term on the Board at that meeting and during the Board meeting following the elections, Mel Fitzhenry, the CASI President, asked if I would assume responsibility as the editor of the Trails. I thought to myself “holy crap, what did I get myself into now?” I was reelected to a three-year term in 2006.

Interim editor Jim Stateczny said he would work with me to prepare me for this task. Fortunately I had some computer savvy, since I had adapted my company to computer-aided drafting (CAD) several years earlier, and also had a working knowledge of the Word program. Through Jim and his company Hill Country Software and Support, I personally purchased a laptop computer which Jim set up and loaded with PageMaker software, to use for the publication of the Trails. He also installed PaintShop Pro software, which was used for editing photos, and several other programs which were necessary for the production process. I also personally purchased a printer and scanner which were needed for this endeavor.

I met with Jim at his office around the 15th of October for my first lesson and together we worked Friday, Saturday and Sunday to prepare the November 2004 issue of the Trails. I started preparation of the December issue, which included all of the results from TICC, early in November and had all of the articles and photos basically ready for Jim’s review. I met with Jim again and we downloaded the winners and the upcoming cookoff listings at his office, printed a review copy, edited some of the data and sent it off to the printer. The Trails was always ready to send to the printer between the 16th and 20th of each month so the hard copy would arrive in the mail prior to the first of each month. From then on I was on my own, even though I made frequent phone calls to Jim asking questions on how to do certain things that had slipped my memory. Thanks to Jim’s assistance, my job as editor was simplified and I hope successful.

One of the things Jim did as editor was to ask chili cooks from various regions of the country to submit articles for the Trails. These articles included much history, local news, and other things of interest that were taking place. Some of the contributors were Ray King, Junior and Dixie Johnson aka Bess and Harry, and Donn Shands. I ran with the idea and added Bud Barrick, Steve Dowdy, and Mama Sue Caffey. Hut Brown and Ken Large submitted “The Making of the Terlingua Ranch,” which was one of my favorites and can be found in the October and November 2005 issues. All of the back issues can be found in the on-line CASI Museum. All of these people, and many others, provided so much about the early days of chili and CASI that I always had interesting and informative content for the Trails. Many other people sent in photos and articles on various cookoffs around the country, providing me with current events in the chili world.

Another thing that Jim did in 2002 was to make the Trails available via email in a pdf format. This gave members who had a computer, or access to one, an early and full-color look at the current issue of the Trails. Later this was enhanced to placing the Trails on the CASI web page for all of the membership.

My second term on the Board ended in 2009. Dana Plocheck was elected that year and volunteered to assume the responsibility of publishing the Trails. I met with Dana in Houston in November to initiate the transfer. We worked on the Trails on Friday, Saturday and finished on Sunday. She was a fast learner and had both the experience and desire to make the transition. When I left Houston that Sunday afternoon, I called Renee Moore, then CASI President, and let her know I felt confident Dana would do an excellent job as the next editor. Dana would call me whenever she had difficulty with anything regarding the Trails and I was always happy to help her. She did not let me, the Board or CASI down.

That’s my story as I remember it.

Steppin' out at the GPM...

Several CASI members went out to watch Gary P. Nunn perform on Friday, September 9, while in Austin for the Great Peppers Meeting. From left: John Daniels, Blu Daniels, Kevin Stovall, Sherry Burns, James Burns, Cindy Stovall, Earl Who Gorham, Bob Steinle, and Sherrie Davis. Pam Clark was there too, but the picture wasn't flattering so she cropped herself out (because she could). Everyone ate, drank, maybe danced a little bit, and had a great time - even the legendary curmudgeon Big John.

Free Quarter Page Ad to CASI Pods, State, Regional and International Opens

As a CASI Pod you are required to put on a pod cookoff once a year. To help you advertise your pod cookoff we allow each pod to place one quarter-page ad in the Terlingua Trails each year, free of charge. This ad should run the month before your cookoff occurs. Should you decide that you need an ad larger than a quarter-page, we will simply bill you for the difference in price. This ad should not be confused with the article advertising your cookoff in the "Cooking with CASI" section in the Terlingua Trails. That article will start to run as soon as you request your cookoff packet and will run until your cookoff occurs.
