World Polio Day 2016
• October 24th was World Polio Day. The efforts to end polio continue. We will only be done when the entire world has been certified polio-free. If you missed the live update, you can watch it again at www.endpolio.org.
• On World Polio Day, the Government of Canada announced $10 million in new funding to help in the eradication of polio.
Polio Cases
Since the September Newsletter:
• Nigeria: One new case has been detected bringing the YTD number to 4. • Pakistan: No new cases. YTD remains at 15. • Afghanistan: No new cases. YTD remains at 8.
World Polio Day in District 5040
The Ladner Club raised awareness with posters, a press release, twitter and facebook posts.
On Bowen Island, Rotarians had a community booth to raise awareness and collect donations.
In Squamish, the Rotary & Interact clubs supported the "Pumpkin Patch on the Park" community event and had an 'End Polio Now' booth.
The two Powell River clubs held a successful Polio fundraising dinner which raised over $2,300 and donations are still coming in. (editor's note: I was honoured to be invited to speak at this event).
Rotary on Ice, led by the Tsawwassen and Ladner Rotary Clubs, with Rotoract Clubs and Interact Clubs in Delta and Vancouver, raised over $1,100 for Polio. Read more HERE.
PolioPlus Giving: District 5040 2016-17 (US$)
The Rotary Foundation's goal for 2016-17 donations to the PolioPlus fund is $45 million.
