Flu Vaccine 2015-16

Fall is here and so is flu vaccine time! To protect yourself and your friends and family from getting the flu, Manitoba Health (Healthy Living and Sen-iors) is encouraging all Manitobans to get a free flu vaccine. For your pro-tection, you should get immunized as soon as possible. For the 2015-16 season, an annual flu vaccine is especially important for those at increased risk of serious illness from the flu, their caregivers and close contacts. This includes seniors age 65 or older, residents of personal care homes or long-term care facilities, children age six months to five years, those with chronic illness, pregnant women, health care workers and first responders, individuals of Aboriginal ancestry, people who are severe-ly overweight or obese or as determined by your primary health care provider. Healthy children 2 to 17 years of age can receive a needle-free flu vaccine called FluMist

®.

Manitobans over the age of 65 should also get a pneumococcal vaccine at the same time as the seasonal flu vaccine. The pneumococcal vaccine helps protect against pneumococcal disease, in-cluding a serious type of pneumonia, blood infections and meningitis. Most adults only need one pneumococcal vaccine in their lifetime. New Canadian guidelines will help clarify which vaccines are preferred for the 2015/16 flu season. The good news is this year's flu vaccines are probably a better match than last year, even though circulating virus strains may change. The Fluzone quadrivalent vaccine will protect against an extra strain of influenza B. The recommended vaccine depending on age and medical conditions are: Children 6 to 23 months. An injectable quadrivalent vaccine called Fluzone Quadrivalent is recom-mended. Children 2 to 17 years. The nasal vaccine (FluMist Quadrivalent) is recommended for most children and adolescents. The nasal vaccine seems more effective than the flu shot in kids 6 and younger, and probably in older children too. The nasal vaccine is not recommended for children who are im-munocompromised or have severe asthma. Adults 18 years and older The nasal vaccine or the injection is appropriate in most adults up to age 59. The nasal vaccine is not recommended in pregnancy or those who are immunocompromised and those with egg allergy. Patients with egg allergy can still get the injectable flu vaccine serious reactions are rare. Visit your local public health office, nursing station, doctor’s office, pharmacy, QuickCare Clinic or ACCESS Centre to check vaccine availability. Remember! Like last year, your pharmacist at St.Malo Pharmacy can also provide immunization services to people 7 years of age and older as soon as the flu vaccine becomes available.

Cheesy Facts About Canadian Cheese

Much of the milk produced in southern Mani-toba is destined to be packaged for sale in cartons. However, did you know that hun-dreds of thousands of litres per year are used to make cheese?

Cheesemaking in Canada began when the first cattle were introduced in Quebec in ei-ther 1608 or 1610. As more settlers arrived, the number of cattle increased and more milk was being produced. By the mid 1600s, cheesemaking was already established throughout the world. French settlers made ripened cheeses according to recipes they had brought with them.

The cheesemaking tradition in Canada is double-stranded, woven from our French and English her-itage. While French settlers brought with them methods for making soft, ripened cheeses, United Empire Loyalists, fleeing the American Revolution, introduced us to the distinctly British characteris-tics of cheddar.

While cheese continued to be made in small hand-made batches and even exported by the 19th century, it was an American, Harvey Farrington, who decided to start cheesemaking on a large scale. To do that, he needed large amounts of milk and convinced local farm women to bring him their milk instead of making their own cheese.

Canadian cheddar cheese is much sought after but a variety of Canadian cheeses have won numer-ous prestigious prizes over the years.

After World War II, with the arrival of many immigrants on Canadian shores, there suddenly became a demand for different varieties of cheeses including feta, edam, mozzarella, provolone, munster and raclette. Canadian cheesemakers, including many from Europe, soon mastered the techniques. Today, these “ethnic” cheeses are enjoyed by all Canadians regardless of their background.

Canadian cheese, produced with a unique blend of old world tradition and new technology, is inter-nationally renowned for its high quality. In order to make excellent cheese, good quality milk is re-

quired. This is due to the strict standards that are implemented by provincial government inspections of the milk producers and distributors. Cheeses made from 100% Canadian milk are held to the highest standards, and the 100% Ca-nadian Milk symbol is your guarantee that the cheese is made from milk from right here in Canada, renowned for its high quality, purity and great taste.
