We have settled nicely into the new school year. It’s been a strong beginning with staff getting to know the students and setting up classroom routines. Our waitlist moved quite a bit over the last two weeks and nearly every grade level is at capacity with around 760 students. We received some additional state funding at the beginning of the year which enabled us to provide additional math and reading support at the elementary level. We developed a .5 FTE reading specialist position to mainly support K-3 rd grade students, and asked Ashley Gilbrough (1 st grade teacher), to take on the new role. We also hired Angie Armbrust as an additional .5 FTE math specialist to work with Genny Bisagna. She has also taken over the 4 th and 5 th grade engineering classes so Genny can fully focus on math K-5. New hires this year have included Brooke Einstein as one of our 5 th grade teachers, and Matthew Riippa as our middle school physical education teacher. We are still looking for a part time elementary Special Education resource teacher, as well as a 3-5 self contained teacher as Katie Dawson just left the district for a wonderful work opportunity. One of the new and exciting initiatives we have this year for K-5 classrooms is F.I.T. time. This stands for Flexible Instruction Time. Each grade level has a set aside time of 20-30 minutes 3-4 times a week. During this time they also have access to 2 different adults such as Genny, or a tutor, or ELL staff member. As a team, they determine which students can use additional support or extension (K-3 focus for F.I.T. is literacy, 4-5 is math) and rearrange all the students in the grade for this time. There are several benefits to this including allowing extension time for students who have already met proficiency, as well has providing more intentional support for students needing more time with a concept or skill without pulling them out of class where they just miss something else. We’re really excited about our work around this in the upcoming year. Our PTSA has also been busy planning events and activities that support our students and our school

Book Fair Thanks

Thanks to everyone who shopped at the Book Fair last week! We hope you found some exciting new reads. We raised almost $3000 in credit at the University Book Store, which will be used to add books to our school and classroom libraries.

If you missed the opportunity to shop, you can still do so through Sunday, October 11, online at www.ubookstore.com, or in person at any University Book Store branch. Just use the code HAW at checkout and a portion of your purchase will be donated to Hazel Wolf!

Many thanks to Book Fair Lead Kristin Gilda and her excellent team of book fair volunteers, and to our Book Fair Partner, University Book Store!

FUNDRAISING CORNER

READ-A-THON (October 10th-23rd)

Ready? Set? READ! It’s time for the third annual Hazel Wolf K-8 fundraiser to promote our love of reading while raising money for our school at the same time! The Read-a-Thon challenges all Wolf Pack students to set a daily reading goal and to meet or exceed it. Prizes will awarded in various categories, including students with the most minutes read; the most sponsorship dollars procured; and greatest percentage increase from the previous year. Information, rules and fundraising packets have been sent home with your student. Can you rise to the Read-A-Thon challenge?

Online donations can be made here: https://hazelwolfk8.ejoinme.org/2015HazelWolfReadAThon

Annual Appeal

Thank you to everyone who has already contributed to our annual appeal. Your contributions, in any amount, will help a student stay warm this winter, help a teacher make sure she has just right books for every child in her classroom, and help all of our students experience field trips that support their classroom learning in a meaningful and memorable way. You can send a contribution to school with your child (in an envelope marked PTSA), or make a donation online: https://jaddams.ejoinme.org/give. Thank you for supporting our school community.

PTSA Membership

Thank you to everyone who has already joined The Hazel Wolf K-8 PTSA. LEGISLATIVE CORNER

HAZEL WOLFpaw printOCTOBER 2015

Legislative Corner So much is going on this fall it makes my head spin. There are school board elections in November, advocates organizing for full funding of K-12 education, and more. Here’s a quick rundown. For more info if you do Facebook check out “Washington’s Paramount Duty” and “Support Hazel Wolf K-8 Teachers.” Bell Times UpdateThe superintendent's new bell times proposal is out. Most K-8's, including Hazel Wolf, are slated to start at 8:50 just like we do now, rather than the proposed 9:40 time mentioned at the PTSA general meeting. See http://sps.ss8.sharpschool.com for all K-12 schedules and more info. The school board must still pass this proposal. School Board ForumsWho we elect makes a difference! The School Board makes decisions about how schools operate and oversees district funding. Four out of seven positions will be elected this November. Come and learn about the candidates:

Monday October 12, 7:30-9:00 pm, Eckstein Middle School Auditorium, 3003 NE 75th Street. If you have questions for the candidates that you'd like to submit in advance, please email - [email protected]

Senate Education Committee’s Listening SessionsBe an advocate for fully funding education. The Senate Early Learning & K-12 Education Committee is hosting six sessions around the state. The only topic on the agenda is “State funding of basic education.” Senators need to hear from parents. The closest meetings to us are:

October 19, 5 pm: Puget Sound Educational Service District Main Office, 800 Oakesdale Ave SW, Renton, WA 98057

Contact me if you can attend one of these meetings, Toni: [email protected]
