Editorial.

The summer weather was variable thisyear, to say the least, but when it wasgood it should have encouraged abumper turnout at events. However, at-tendances generally have been lowerthan previously – not just from NA7Cmembers, but from all corners of theold car movement – and what has beenparticularly noticeable recently is thedwindling number of pre-war cars thatput in an appearance.

At the risk of repeating ourselves, wewonder if the reason for this is finan-cial constraint, boredom, or just a lackof interesting or appealing events? Ifthe latter, why not talk to your commit-tee and suggest an event that youwould like to attend. Better still, organ-ize your own on behalf of the club!

We mentioned in our last issue that wewere looking into the availability of“old” tax discs. A list of suppliers is on

page 10. During the course of our in-vestigations we also learnt a new word– velologist – which describes a personwho collects or studies tax discs. The“vel”, apparently, is derived from Vehicle Excise Licence.

Although the summer is hardly over, itwill soon be Christmas! For our festivedinner, which this year is on Tuesday 9December, we are returning to theWensum Valley Hotel. Full details areon page 7. The booking form is onpage 39. and is also available on line atwww.na7c.co.uk

Austin Sevens versus Morris MinorsDave RixCuriosity won the day on 2 July sopicking up John Lain we Elaned our-selves to the 100th Bomber Group baseat Thorpe Abbotts WW2 airfield ataround 10.20 am.

The object of this curiosity was a testset up by Chris Lambert of the PrewarMorris Minor Club and Chris Garnerditto the Prewar Austin 7 Club in con-junction with The Automobile Maga-zine to compare the merits andperformances of the two marques.

The cars chosen were a 1932 SevenTourer and a similar Minor under theauspices of Martin Bell of the saidmagazine.

Elfin Safety decreed the tests on theseapparently deadly machines should beon a runway 400yds from human con-tact so in truth nothing much could beseen or heard of the goings on, but wewere allowed to go to the top of thetower which gave great views over thesurrounding countryside and distantglimpses of the cars hurtling down therunway.

A slalom test was seen to take place, both forward and reverse, and a brakecomparison check was made also. Ishould think that acceleration and topspeed readings were taken but it wasdifficult to tell what was going on.

We met up with and spent a pleasanthour or so in the company of MartinJones sans Model A but in a modern. We also had an interesting chat withthe founder of the Ipswich TransportMuseum, which he had set up in thesixties. He had brought up an OHC Mi-nor circa 1930 and what a soundly de-signed car it seemed.

The Achilles heel of the engine used tobe oil running into the verticallymounted dynamo from the camshaftbut modern lip seals seem to havecured this problem. (The engineschanged to side valves around 1932when I believe hydraulic brakes wereintroduced).

Father had one of these when leavingthe RAF in the 1940s and I seem to re-member it revved its nuts off at quite

modest speeds, whereas my Chummyseems rather ‘high geared’ if anything.

Has anybody in the club had any expe-rience of these cars? If so perhaps theywould give their opinion and experi-ence of them.

There were several different models ofMinors to be seen of earlier and laterdesigns, but the only Seven there wasthe Tourer used in the tests.

Thorpe Abbotts is a tidy and pleasantplace with good café and facilities butnot as original as Seething Tower andisn’t a ‘live’ airfield like Seething.

The report of the comparisons will bein an autumn edition of the monthlyAutomobile Magazine.

...nothing much could be seen or heard of the goings on....

Val BiroCreator of Gumdrop dies, aged 92The children's author, artist and illus-trator Val Biro died on 4 July.

He is probably best remembered, atleast among car enthusiasts, as the cre-ator of the Gumdrop series of 37books. These chronicled the adven-tures (and misadventures) of an Austin12/4 and were based around a car heowned and drove regularly until re-cently.

However, the name has A7 connec-tions. In 1950 he bought a 1933 Sevenwhich had the registration letters GM.His wife promptly christened the carGumdrop. Several cars came and went, then in 1961 be bought a 1926 CliftonHeavy 12/4. Since it was a grown-upversion of their first car, Val and hiswife decided it had to be called Gum-drop.

Val was born Balint Stephen Biro (Valbecause Valentine is the nearest Eng-lish version of Balint) in Budapest,Hungary. In 1939, Val's father, recog-nising what was happening in Europe, arranged for his eighteen-year-old sonto go to London to study art. Val neversaw his father again. He sadly died in1944 only two days before the Gestapocalled to arrest him as a political sus-pect.

After training in art school, Valworked for a variety of publishers untilsetting up as a freelance in 1953.

Val did work for the Radio Times forover 20 years. He also illustrated over400 books and designed over 3,000book covers for other authors such asNevile Shute, C S Forester, EvelynWaugh, Dennis Wheatley and IrisMurdoch.

The first book in the famous series,Gumdrop: The Adventures of a Vin-tage Car appeared in 1966; the last,Gumdrop's School Adventure in 2001.

Our Cars

NellieBill Doe, who died recently, was the father of a friend of Barney Barnard.Among his effects was this account of his ownership of a “Seven” in theFifties. It seemed a good idea at the time. Theyear was 1951 and a chance to take ajob with the Decca Navigator Compa-ny as Assistant Station Engineer at oneof their transmitting stations, with amodem semi-detached house on site, rent and rates free, an increase in sala-ry, plus a pension scheme too good tomiss.

In reality, socially, it became hard tolive with. The station was situated inthe middle of a field facing 2000 acresof marsh, sometimes covered by a hightide. The nearest neighbours, apartfrom the station engineer next door, were half-a-mile away and the nearestvillage and public transport were al-most two miles away.

There was a Ford 8 van specifically forcompany use, which could be used forpersonal reasons at the discretion of thestation engineer – not always donewith the best of grace!

The answer, without the slightestdoubt, was our own private personalmotorised transport. Obtaining anysuch item in this year was extremely

difficult. On the new car front, the mo-tor industry was slowly getting intoproduction after the war. By far themajority of new cars produced had tobe exported (The country was broke af-ter World War Two) and those thatcame on to the home market weresnapped up by doctors and black mar-ket spivs.

The only vehicles available were pre-war and because of the shortage, theyfetched sky-high prices. A 1937 AustinSeven, which sold for £128 brand new,in 1951 in good running nick fetched£365. When you're earning £6 perweek, such machinery was out of thequestion.

A friend of ours who lived in the near-est village bought a 1931 Austin Sevensaloon. He called it Nellie. We don'tknow why – the registration numberwas TL1404 and we thought Tilliewould have been more appropriate. However, he trotted around with it anddecided one day to take his wife andtwo sons to London - a distance ofsome 200 miles plus. On the waydown, because the body was not all

Page 15: October 2014 - na7c.co.uk · October 2014 7 Christmas Dinner The Club’s Christmas Dinner will be held on Tuesday 9 December (7 for 7.30pm) at the Wensum Valley Hotel, Golf and Country

that stable, the passenger door flewopen. Thanks to his quick reaction, hiswife fell only halfway out!

When it was pointed out to him that theking pins were very badly worn, hebought a new pair, complete withbushes and stowed them, nicelygreased and wrapped, under his seat. The intention was to get them fittedprofessionally, but before he could getthe job done, it all went wrong.

One day, he stopped at a road junction. As he started to turn, the nearside kingpin gave way, the stub axle collapsed,

the little car rolled over and the damagewas done.

On reflection, it must have been des-peration for motorised transport thatcaused us to buy this wreck.

When it was delivered to us, it was in-deed a sorry sight. The roof had partedcompany with the front end and thecrumpled remains wafted gently in thebreeze. The windscreen, though still inone piece, stuck out at an angle ofabout 30 degrees, its frame dangling intwo, mainly because it was rustedthrough at the centre.

Barney’s friend, Annie and her older brother, John, pose proudly on

Nellie’s bonnet

Page 16: October 2014 - na7c.co.uk · October 2014 7 Christmas Dinner The Club’s Christmas Dinner will be held on Tuesday 9 December (7 for 7.30pm) at the Wensum Valley Hotel, Golf and Country

The passenger door was free standing –on the back seat: the cast brass hingeshad snapped.

The front axle was so badly twistedthat the front wheels were set to go intwo different directions.

But there were some good points. Thefive wire wheels seemed to have comethrough unscathed and the tyres wereinflated, thanks to some good tyres andtubes.

What remained of the body seemed sounstable that the only sensible actionappeared to be to scrap it and startagain. With the aid of a good hacksaw,it didn't take long to cut through thesteel floor, just to the rear of the doorpillars: the bolts came out of the chas-sis quite easily and the body, completewith back window and two side win-dows, gently rolled onto the ground.

It didn't weigh a lot, but a wheelbarrowwas needed to transport it to the rear ofthe station, well out of sight.

The master plan was to build onto thistiny chassis a beautiful ash-framed,aluminium-panelled body. Alvis hadproduced a magnificent creation in thismanner – there was no reason why itcouldn't be reproduced in miniature.

However, just at this time a friend ofours, who taught woodwork at a localschool, called to see us. When told of

our intention to build such a body hesaid “I wouldn't attempt such a projectwithout a band-saw”.

When you haven't even seen a band-saw, let alone used one, it makes onethink. It was obvious it would be ex-tremely difficult to produce thingssuch as rear wheel arches and subtlecurves to the rear and the roof.

No doubt about it, the wheelbarrowwould have to be pressed into use againon the return journey. But not beforethe mechanical side was sorted.

The front axle was dismantled and re-moved. The local blacksmith did a finejob straightening the front beam, fittingthe new king pins and bushes.

When the oil and muck was removed, the chassis came up like new, becausewhen it was made it had been blackenamelled.

The quarter-elliptic rear springs werenot elliptic – they were dead flat. Butold engine oil was poured on to themand left for a few days. The rust oozedout and the springs sprung back intotheir original shape.

The petrol tank, which was mountedon the front scuttle, just to the rear andabove the engine, didn't look too bril-liant. When removed, this appeared tobe the case. The one side of the tankwhich had been away from the engine,

Page 17: October 2014 - na7c.co.uk · October 2014 7 Christmas Dinner The Club’s Christmas Dinner will be held on Tuesday 9 December (7 for 7.30pm) at the Wensum Valley Hotel, Golf and Country

and therefore devoid of oil vapour forthe past twenty-two years, was badlyrusted. When the rust was cleanedaway there wasn't much metal left!

A coat of paint, a strip of fabric, thenanother coat of paint and the tank re-mained petrol-tight for the next fouryears.

The only thing broken on the engineappeared to be the cast aluminium fanpulley. This was replaced with new, with some degree of caution, because itwas a press fit and held into place witha very large nut - too Much pressureand the casting would surely crack (notthe end of the story here - see later).

The front axle assembled, it was timeto go for a test drive. The engine startedon the handle, first time, despite indif-ferent compression on number threecylinder.

A suitable board was placed across thechassis and with four-year-old sonJohn as ballast we trundled off down tothe marsh track and then safely homeagain.

Success! Nellie was living again, albeita bit naked with the absence of a body.

So the body was wheeled back fromthe rubbish dump and placed onceagain on the now spruced-up chassis, much to the amusement of the dust-men, who came weekly to dispose ofthe station’s rubbish. For the past fourweeks they had been taking a great in-terest in the project and from their re-marks we suspected a degree ofadmiration. But then it could have beenpity.

The bolting on to the chassis was noproblem, but having cut through thesteel floor at the front didn't help secu-rity.

With no welding equipment to handand in any case no knowledge of howto handle such technical stuff the sev-ered edges, which almost joined, wereheld together by two thin strips of met-al and bolted to the adjacent bodyparts. This was obviously not strongA young Annie tries her hand at

enough, so in the foot-well on eitherside of the car, two lengths of steel an-gle were drilled and bolted to stop thefront and rear ends parting company.

Building a complete new roof at firstseemed daunting, but in the end wentquite smoothly with the help of somedecent timber planks. Our garden pathwas edged with elm planks about fourinches wide by three-quarters thick. These were ideal for the two sides. Forthe two cross members oak was used:the one above the windscreen laid flatand the centre member set up in verti-cal plane. We were probably buildingthe first oak-beamed Austin Seven! The thin ribs which ran fore and aft hadto be bought specially and were jointedinto the oak beams and screwed on tothe steel body rear end.

Thick felt carpet underlay provided aperfect base for the overall Rexine cov-ering. Aluminium channel down thesides completed the job.

Perhaps our greatest ally was a certainMr Dalby, who ran a firm in NorthYorkshire, near Thirsk, called AustinSeven Services. He was a breaker ofSevens, but could supply new parts, ifpossible genuine, otherwise pattern. But he was superb on advice and the

supply of used parts. Every one of theused parts he supplied was in first classworking condition.

Even the request for cast brass doorhinges didn't stump him. We neededthese to fit the passenger door. Unfor-tunately, the door did not go back inperfect plane but it did fit and was cer-tainly secure.

The next big problem was the wind-screen. The glass was whole but a newframe was needed. It had to be Ushaped in section, down the sides andalong the bottom. We managed to gettwo lengths of narrow aluminium an-gle and then riveted them together toform a channel. But the problem thenwas to bend it round at right angles tocurve round the two bottom corners. Itwas at this time that brother Geraldcame to see us for the one and onlytime. Gerald had been apprenticed toDe Havilland Aircraft and in no time atall, he deftly and patiently crimped ourframe into shape.

So that was about it. After eight weeksof part-time toil, numerous cups of tea, help, encouragement, advice from thekitchen, it was time for the dustmen togive us a rousing cheer.

To be continued...

Once out on the track, the sporty onesmade for the horizon as fast as possi-ble.

Big 7 did well, but being taller than itis wide made for interesting cornering.

Plenty of leaning over (heeling is amore appropriate word) and lots of un-dersteer and rear wheel steering to addto the enjoyment.

It was great fun as it reached 55mph onoccasions and was faster than some.

Of note is that she was bedding in a fullset of new linings and brake cables. In-teresting!

Journey Through The Ages Vintage Rally & Country Fair – 22 JuneDave Rix tries a new venueThis was another new venue for us, atGoodrich Park, Palgrave (near Diss)and once again the weather was warmand bright and no mechanical misfor-tune marred the day.

Club members and their cars presentwere Barney and Jean Barnard (RP),Trevor and Mavis Jenkins with Mavisin her Nippy and Trevor and the dogswith the open Rolls. David Lobb had

the Vauxhall and caravan while Janetjoined him later in the day. Another su-perbly presented Seven was seen butwe didn’t see the owner but believe itwas Howard Thame’s car.

A welcome addition to the 7 fraternitywere Mel and Annette Grainger alongwith two other Suffolk club membersand a couple of Bungay Old Timersmembers with Sevens.

The park is a level site with a smalllake beyond which the military folkshad their display, while half-a-dozenvaried steam engines were smokingaway in another area. There were a fewprewar cars mingling among the morenumerous classics including a good-looking Model T Ford.

A varied array of food, craft, and otherstalls for the browsers had been provid-ed and a couple of autojumble boyoswere plying their mystifying and un-marked spare parts, while the mainring was busy with many displayswhich included many overdressed An-glo Saxons running around in the heatbashing each other with cudgels. (I

presume they were only acting and notthe locals settling some long standingfeud).

Although similar to many events, itwas a friendly day out and we met withmembers of other clubs we have got toknow over the years and will returnagain.

After diverting to Diss to drop a bookback to 7 club member Geoff Halsteadon the way home, we caught up withthe tail of a convoy of cars being led byMavis in the Nippy with Trevor in hot

pursuit. However, Mavis wasn’t hang-ing about as our speedo was showing50+ on the level, which we thoughtwas good going! (Must add we were inthe Elan). A very nippy Nippy.

Wings & Wheels – 13 July The Editor enjoys a day of sunshine and showersThe weather men promised showersand they were right, but despite beingheavy they did not spoil our enjoymentof this annual event, organised withtheir usual competence by the Hales-worth Lions.

Overall attendance of cars seemeddown on last year and this was reflect-ed by the number of Club “Sevens” onour pitch – four. These were the Chum-mies of Dave and Tricia Rix and Philand Tricia Jepson, the RP of Barneyand Jean Barnard and the EditorialVan. Tucked away discretely under atree was John and Christine Lain’sMGBGT, while elsewhere on the fieldwere Hamish and Anne Alger in theirA35 and John Clark in his Jaguar.

A quick count-up showed about 125cars in total, with only 20 pre-wars, in-cluding a fifth “Seven”.

During the afternoon there was a fullprogramme of events in the ring, in-cluding Cossack horsemen, fox-hounds, terrier racing, heavy horses, obedience, falconry and a display ofduck-herding using dogs.

The “Wings” part of the show com-prised two aerobatic displays. Unfortu-nately the promised appearance of theBattle of Britain Memorial Flight wasprevented by the weather. The first dis-play was by the Aerostars, flying fiveRussian-built YAK 52 aircraft. Thesecond was the Twister Aerobatic

Team, whose aircraft have an unusualhistory, having started life as a world-beating radio-controlled aerobaticmodel aircraft. This was so successfulthat the designers decided to produce a

full-size version, intended for homeconstruction.

A wide range of stall surrounded thering, selling just about anything andthere were large craft and food mar-quees. Teas were served in the walledgarden, where diners were entertainedby the talented Ipswich Hospital Band.Other attractions included the ever-popular “Sheep Show”, bungee jump-ing, a fairground and clay pigeonshooting.

The public turned out in their drovesand everywhere was very busy – untilthe late afternoon downpour. We haverarely seen a field empty so quickly!Fortunately it was soon over and wemanaged to drive home in the dry.

Club Day at Norwich Charity Motor Show – 19/20 JulyAnother sunny (and sometimes rainy) weekendDave Rix, John Lain and your Editorwere on parade early on Friday to erectthe club gazebo. Once again we haddifferent size pitches for Saturday andSunday and the stewards from the Li-ons had marked them out with theirusual efficiency. The gazebo was soonup and, in the light of the weather fore-cast, well tethered.

Having enjoyed a good run down an al-most deserted A47 on Saturday morn-ing, the Editorial van arrived almostbefore the gates opened. We like to beearly, but this was the first time wehave ever been the first car to arrive! We were joined later by Dave and Johnin their borrowed Big Seven and JohnWyett in his 1953 A30.

These constituted the “expected” carsfor Saturday and if the trend followed

that of last year, we thought it unlikelythat any more would turn up. However,we were pleasantly surprised whenfour more cars joined us. These com-prised Charles Levien in the Paxton,Henry and Jennifer Thorne in their Ru-by, Colin Aldridge and Mossie in theirreplica Van and Kevin Shortis in hisNewbury. The weather proved warm, although attendance seemed low.

On Sunday morning Cherry drove theVan, while I drove the Special. Arriv-ing, as usual, ahead of the crowds, wesoon had the gazebo unzipped and thebanners flying. We were soon joinedby Dave in the Chummy, closely fol-lowed by Zita Denmark in her Ruby, accompanied by Keith Watts. JimHunt, looking very well, was next toarrive in his RP, chauffeured byMichael Spinks. Once again we were

unsure of the actual number who mightattend, as there were other rallies onaround the county and we knew somemembers would be going to them. However, cars continued to arrive atregular intervals and eventually the ga-zebo was ringed by fifteen assorted ve-hicles.

These comprised – in addition to thosealready mentioned – Phil and TriciaSharpe (and Winston!) in their Mk 1Ruby; Bryan and Hazel Norfolk, freshfrom the 750 club’s tour of Norfolk, intheir Boat-tailed two-seater; GrahamMakepeace in his Imp Special, closelyfollowed by wife Claudia being drivenby son Chris in Dad’s Mk 1 Ruby;

Dave and Karen Witton in the RL Sa-loon; and Mavis Jenkins in her Nippy,of which more later.

That completed the line-up of “Sev-ens”, but they were joined by KevinShortis, again in his Newbury and a“guest” in the shape of Andy Brown, who joined us in his 1931 Morris Mi-nor side-valve tourer. Our final twomembers arrived in “moderns” – Johnand Christine Lain in the MGBGT andTrevor Jenkins and friends (and dogsFrankfurter and Chipolata) in the RRWraith. Chairman John Groom andMargaret also put in an appearance, butthey had come in a “modern” too, andleft it in the public car park.

Everyone was soon installed in andaround the gazebo, or off exploringwhat was on offer in the rest of theshow. This included a good number of“classic” cars, but very few pre-warones and a wide range of stalls and ex-hibits. There were displays from mostof the local new car dealers, numerouscharity and craft stalls and an excellentselection of food outlets – the NorfolkHog Roast was particularly good, wewere told!

On both days there was a small aero-batic display and a band entertainedthroughout the afternoon.

Sunday afternoon concluded withprize-giving and Graham Makepeace’s“Imp” collected second prize in thepre-war category (see page 6).

As the afternoon drew to a close, thethreatened rain looked as though itwould soon put in an appearance, so allhands set to and the gazebo was hur-riedly dismantled and stowed away. Most cars had left by now and the re-mainder beat a hasty retreat, trying tostay ahead of the rain. Travelling east,we succeeded, but those going in otherdirections were not so lucky – see be-low!.

Mavis Jenkins and her Nippy enjoyed mixed fortunes on Sunday. Arriving at the showground, she found she had a flat tyre. Having fixed this and enjoyed the rest of the day, she headed home, hood down as usual, only to be caught in a violent downpour. She had to stop and empty the water out of the car as it came over her shoes and also had to remove her glasses, as they didn’t have wipers!

The car was now dried out and the puncture fixed, but Mavis had to go to four garages before she found one that would repair it. Eventually a motor bike garage put a new tube in, but it took them an hour and a half to do it!

The Three Stoogesponder the problemof Mavis’s flat tyre

A Wander to Wheatfen – 27 JulyLiz Maulden gets close to nature On an overcast but dry Sunday morn-ing, seven cars met at Elvin’s garage inPoringland to travel on to WheatfenNature Reserve.

They were: Martin and Thelma Jonesplus two friends in their Model A Ford;Dave Rix and Philip and Tricia Jepsonin their Chummies; Michael Spinks inhis Box Saloon; John and ChristineLain in the MG; Tricia Rix in her100E; and us, Paul and Liz Maulden inour Ruby.

Interested passers-by delayed depar-ture but we set off for a short tripthrough the Framinghams to visitHighway Nurseries for a coffee andcomfort stop.

Refreshed, the sun came out and we setoff towards Bramerton along narrowcountry lanes through lovely country-side. The “speed bumps” near the Wa-ters Edge pub and the river were notreally needed for our cars – but theycertainly tested the suspension! Thesewere followed by a very steep climb

Page 29: October 2014 - na7c.co.uk · October 2014 7 Christmas Dinner The Club’s Christmas Dinner will be held on Tuesday 9 December (7 for 7.30pm) at the Wensum Valley Hotel, Golf and Country

(yes there are hills and hairpin bends inNorfolk!) towards Bramerton Street.

A few miles further on we reached Sur-lingham – another pretty village – andon towards the wilderness of Wheatfenreserve.

On arrival we parked up and enjoyedour picnics and had a “natter”. We thenset off to walk some of the fen andwoodland. We only had time for ashort walk but it was enough of a tasterto want to return in the future.

Wheatfen was the home of the late TedEllis. The former marshman’s cottageset amongst 130 acres of woodland andfen, was his home for over 40 years. Hewas a writer and broadcaster on naturalhistory, very meticulous with his re-search but he was able to communicateto everyone with his enthusiasm for na-ture.

The Ted Ellis Trust was set up to pre-serve Wheatfen and to allow everyoneto enjoy the wildlife, birds, flowers andbutterflies that live in this habitat. It isquite swampy ground but an excellentpathway and boardwalk route allowsone to see nature close up.

The family of Ted Ellis still live in thecottage and much to Dave Rixs' delight(he is a local lad) he was re-acquaintedwith Ted's two daughters who he hadnot seen for 50 years.

We were then invited back to Dave andTricia's for afternoon tea - we enjoyedMary Berry cakes plus jelly andicecream in the garden. A marvellousend to a lovely day out.

Many thanks to Dave and Tricia for or-ganising the day and planning a beauti-ful drive through the lanes of Norfolk.

Beighton House – 3 AugustDave Rix enjoys an afternoon in pleasant surroundingsAn enjoyable and restful afternoonwith lovely weather and good compa-ny was had by all who responded toDavid Charles’ invitation to join him,Carol and Chris in their garden at Beig-hton House

We visitors soon tucked into our pic-nics, some choosing the shade of thebig tree, others opting for the sun, while Carol kept up a regular supply oftea and coffee along with an abundanceof buns and cakes served with a smileby the two men-folk.

It was interesting to see how groups, immersed in some discussion – aboutcars probably, would dissolve and re-form with different people. In thecourse of the afternoon most folksmust have spoken to almost everyone –which is how it should be.

Chris seemed to take on the mantle ofan Austin Ten demonstrator in that hetook both Mrs R and Mavis and letthem drive it around the meadow, buthe did have the reward of a run inMavis’s Nippy. I believe he let hismate loose in the Ten as well. We

were able to see the work in progresson the MGB and the special – whichreminded me somewhat of an unfin-ished project in my own garage…

A bit of a stir was caused by the arrivalof Nigel Stennet-Cox and Jocelyn inhis Model ‘A’ Ford with a caravan intow. Nigel had a good look at the carsand took an interest in our 100E forsome reason and stayed for a while.

Those attending with their cars were:Rick and Cherry, in “Bluey”; Phil and

Tricia in the Chummy; Trevor andMavis with the Nippy and Bentley;John Wyett, A30; Hamish and Ann intheir Newbury; Barney and Jean, RP;and John and Christine, MGB. Mrs Rand friend brought along the 100E.while I and friend came in our Chum-my. Also there were non A7 membersDick and Sue Malt with their TR4. Itwas also good to see Tony and AnnRose out and about (and maybe seethem at Kevin’s talk in October with abit of luck?).

All-in-all it was an excellent visit andthanks to the family for their hospitali-ty. It even extended to David and Chrisescorting some of us to Reedham Ferrywhere much excitement was caused atthe pub with the arrival of two Chum-mies, an RP, a Nippy and a big Bent-ley! The cameras came out and eventhe ferryman used his webcam torecord us – said it made his day!

Village at War – 25 AugustRain stops play for the EditorThe weather forecast for this usuallypopular event was not good and unfor-tunately proved accurate! Consequent-ly the turn-out of both exhibitors andvisitors was disappointingly low.

Given the likelihood of rain we decid-ed to take two cars with lids on to theshow and arrived with the RP and the

van to find David Lobb having break-fast in his vintage caravan, towed asusual by his 1928 Vauxhall. A fewmore cars arrived, but the total failed toreach double figures.

Apart from David and ourselves, theclub mustered two Rubies – Zita Den-mark and Martin Roper – and Michael

1914-2014

As part of the Village at War event, and in commemoration of the one hundreth anniversary of

the outbreak of World War One, a group re-enacted the mustering of

the 5th (Territorial) Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment, which

assembled at Dereham on 5 August 1914.

The top picture shows the re-enactors posing outside the

estate agents office that, in 1914 (right), was Battalion HQ. Over 800 men were accommodated in maltings around the town.

On the 9 August, the battalion left for Colchester by train

from Dereham Railway Station, eventually seeing service in Gallipoli and

Mesopotamia.

Looking around the site, it was obviousthat the bad weather forecast had af-fected everybody. There were hardlyany stalls in the usually busy work-house courtyard and the public werenoticeable by their absence.

During the morning there was a flypastby the 1942 C-47 Dakota from theRoyal Air Force Battle of Britain Me-morial Flight.

of jeeps, with a tractor and two demofire engines - not a bad turnout for aSaturday event I thought.

An hours gentle trundle through thebyways got us to the venue. As we en-tered the field the first people we sawwere Barney and Jean Barnard withtheir RP, so we parked next to themand an open 7 tourer. We three and a12-6 were the only Austins there, acouple of Morris 8’s being the otherpre-war cars on show.

It was held at the High School wherethere was a café and arts & crafts in thebuilding. There were more stalls on theplaying field with bouncy castles, slides and whirling around things forthe youngsters. Important for we twoChummy travellers was a good burgerbar and we also found a stall whichsold tickets at a quid for bottles whichcould contain water or wine. Our £4.00investment yielded one bottle of redwine ---not bad!.

The school band of very young musi-cians did a fine job of entertaining thecrowd and was appreciated by Barneyand Jean who are the musicians amongus.

An upright Ford Pop driven by twoyoungsters was a heartening sight asmost classic/vintage cars are driven byclassic/vintage people. I had earlieroverheard a small girl say to her mum“what a funny looking old thing thatis.” It only occurred to me later shemay not have been speaking of the car!

Wondering who or what Stradsett is,Wikipedia tells me it means a place bya Roman road. The Fen Causeway wasa Roman road that ran through the par-ish, so it may be true.

Wikipedia hasn’t a clue where Strad-broke comes from, but perhaps it oughtto be re-named “Sevenbroke” afterRick’s engine experience there earlierin the year!

As well as enjoying the cars, the mainattraction for me was visiting the his-toric buildings, many of which are notnormally open to the public. The airraid shelters under the Tuesday marketplace were open for the first time hav-

Internet Vehicle Checklists James FairchildWith the demise of the tax disc fast ap-proaching, we thought it useful to re-cap some of the online sources of dataabout your vehicle, which owners/keepers/drivers can check themselves

for free at any time. Over the past tenyears, DVLA have made a range ofdata available for people to use forfree, some about their own vehicle, others available for anyone to use.

1. What marque does the DVLA think your vehicle is?

Visit http://www.rac.co.uk/products-services/car-data-checks/ and enteryour registration plate, then click 'buynow' but note you are not committingto a transaction. The next screen willgive three pieces of information: make(in DVLA speak, and note any spaces),year of manufacture, and engine size incc. There is also a field 'model' which

only seems to be populated on certainmore recent vehicles. It is important totype this verbatim into the next web-site. Checking three similar Ford Car-go trucks of the 1980s shows marquesrecorded as FORD, IVECO-FORDand IVECO FORD (the latter with aspace).

2. Does DVLA think your car has Vehicle Excise Duty and an MoT?

https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-taxis a new site, currently in beta (trial)format, which allows you to click thegreen 'check now' then enter registra-tion number and vehicle make, andclick search. You are then presentedwith two coloured boxes. On the left

we have VED status (the options are:taxed until xx xx/SORN/untaxed ex-pired xx xx) and on the right the MoTstatus. The options here appear to be(tick); 'MOT expiry date xx xx',(cross); 'no MOT expired xx xx'; or 'nodetails held by DVLA'

3. Previous MoTs

Previous MoT attempts can be checkedat https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-his-tory-vehicle

To use this service you need the regis-tration mark, and either the serial

number of the most recent pass/failcertificate or the reference numberfrom the most recently issued V5C.This allows you to view all fail and ad-visory items from previous MoT at-tempts, all at a glance.

4. Insurance status

This can be verified at http://www.ask-mid.com where there is a free check in-tended for vehicle owners/drivers, aswell as the option to pay £4 for a more

detailed report which names the otherinsurer (intended for checking the oth-er vehicle involved in a car accident).

5. When buying a vehicle, it is always prudent to undertake a HPI check.

Your author has used http://www.auto-check.co.uk many times (which is aservice from Experian) which current-ly offers five checks for £24.99 or onecheck for £19.99. Doing a HPI check isthe only way to see whether a vehiclerecord has a 'scrapped' marker or not. There are other providers available(though note that some require the VINto be inputted before they display in-

formation - the Experian site listeddoes not mandate this).

We would encourage vehicle ownersto undertake steps 1 to 4 in respect ofall vehicles you currently own, and inrespect of a discrepancy to contact ei-ther DVLA or their own insurer as amatter of urgency. When buying a ve-hicle, we would also recommend thatstep 5 is undertaken.

For those who do not use a computer

For people without a computer, publiclibraries will usually offer free internetaccess.

Alternatively family and friendsshould be able to assist.

In particular, children (even youngerones) are likely to have such a level of

computer literacy that they can under-take steps 1 to 4 at lightning speed foryou.

We would urge club members to talk toothers (particularly those without acomputer) about these changes and tooffer to assist with checking

Limitations

There are some limitations with theDVLA data. We are working withDVLA to address these, but in particu-lar:

• A vehicle which hasn't been licensed or SORN'd for a long time appears to have its record on an archive system and displays a 'year of manufacture' of 0001.

• Presently, there is no recognition for a vehicle which is now MoT exempt. These display a red box and a cross and the expiry date of the last MoT. Again, we are dis-cussing this with DVLA.

• There is also no recognition for the handwritten MoTs as issued by

VOSA for PSV and HGV MoTs. Again we are requesting this change, as the MoT pass for such vehicles does appear in the system that allows one to purchase a tax disc (VED), so the field must be there in the dataset somewhere.

• We have also become aware that a number of long-term off the road vehicles (those that are pre-SORN) have had a phantom 'taxed' status applied, usually with a date of expiry in the middle of the month.

If readers encounter a discrepancy oth-er than the above four items, we wouldbe grateful if they could get in touchvia the FBHVC office.

And Finally...

My mains do not rumble, from my axle no whine,

Not a glimmer of life from this battery of mine.

My last job was carrying swill for theswine,

Of life, I’m afraid, there isn’ta sign.

My days in the agents, all gleaming, on show

A lot has happenedbetween then and

now

No more trips tothe seaside with

children on board

Laughing as wesplashed through the

unbridged ford

My headlamps are gone, they carried the masks,

That helped me through mywartime tasks

When the fifties arrived, a new lease of life

But when the Mini turned up I was just cast aside

So I lie in the brambles with my memories

Hoping that someone takes pity on me.
