Words from Chris, our RE:

Towards the end of this month, we are having 3 more great events. The IMSA event at the Kanas Speedway; the Street Survival School at MCCC and Solo Event #4 at MCC. As usual, these events will probably go on without a hitch.

At this time, I would like to bring up that we are still looking for ways to get more people involved with the everyday parts of our club. The newsletter has the monthly trivia questions that whoever emails Barbara with the correct answer will be entered into a drawing at our December General Meeting for $35 towards an event fee. We are trying to get more people to come to our monthly meetings by doing some small things like keeping the meeting as short as we can so we can do fun stuff. At the last two meetings, and we plan on keeping this going at least for awhile, we did some in-car camera videos for a prize at the end. And when you come, don’t forget to sign Paula’s list at each meeting for the chance at a free membership in 2015.

I am still looking for ideas like go karts, car museums to show our cars and maybe hold a meeting or two. I just need any idea you might have that would bring our members out! The last few weeks have been crazy with events and graduations, “Way to go Patrick!!”, and other school projects. It is now time to get our members out and see what we can do to keep them with us! There is no bad idea whether we use it right now or not. Any idea you have , please contact any of the board members to let them know.

Remember this is our club, but without people standing up for the club, we won’t be able to stand forever! This is our club, what can we do to make it better. THANK YOU!

Chris Kern

FSAE – Support Future Club Members by the Roberts family

Pop quiz – What is the second fastest class running

autocross today? B Modified? C Modified? If you

said FSAE you are right. FSAE is the acronym for

Formula Society of Automotive Engineers and is

the training ground for future SCCA members.

Engineering students become involved in FSAE as a

volunteer in their under classmen years and as a

Capstone project when entering their senior year. As

a Capstone project students apply what they have

learned over the past 4-5 years. The goal of this

project is to design and build a car that could be

sold as an autocross car to an end user that would

be economical and fast.

Design of the car extends over an academic

year with a new car built from the ground

up each year. Carbon fiber provides the

material for the body, wheels, wings, and

selected suspension pieces with no

restrictive weight parameters. Student

“teams” are responsible for engine, drive

train, suspension, body, wings, and brakes.

Support is sometimes provided by other

engineer majors such as electrical and

aerospace.

A couple of national championships are

held each year with the Midwest well

represented with Kansas University, Kansas

State, Wichita State, Missouri University( Columbia) , Missouri Science & Technology (Rolla), and Oklahoma

University posting a proven track record of designing and building strong competitive cars. In recent years it has

become an international event represented by

cars from Germany, Austria, England, Australia,

Japan, China, South Korea, Mexico, Venezuela,

Brazil, and Russia. KU took their team to

Austria last year in addition to the two events in

the United States. Detroit annually hosts the

May event every year with a capacity of 140

cars. The second event held in June usually has

a smaller field and has been hosted by Fontana,

CA; Lincoln, NE; and Virginia International

Raceway.

These FSAE competitions consistently include

autocross, a 22 lap endurance

race, skid pad, and acceleration.

Additional points are awarded

for cost analysis, design, and

presentation. The total

number of points earned in

each of these events

determines place and the

national champion title. Cars

must be well represented

during these presentation

events and the stamina to

complete all of the competition

events to receive a score high

enough to place competitively.

KU won the National event in Lincoln, Nebraska in 2012 and the winning car can be seen in the Speedway Motors

Museum.

The experience gained by these students and the opportunity to participate in these various competitions has

spawned local SCCA National Champions in FSAE including Nick Roberts (2012) and Trent Strunk (2013). Nick

Roberts made history by losing by 1/1000th of a second in 2009 to a driver from the University Texas Arlington

(UTA).

Students from several of these Midwest colleges and universities can be seen at autocross events in Kansas City.

The opportunity to practice driving skills and sort out the optimal settings for a car is what draws these students

while they are in school. If you see these students at an event, welcome them and encourage their continued

patronage after graduation.

FINAL NOTE: Sportscar Magazine showcased the 2012 Kansas University FSAE car with its picture on the front

page and a very informative article inside Fall of 2012.

Kansas Winter Rally 2014- Letter to Competitors from Rich Bireta

The first Kansas Winter Rally was held March 22, 2014. The event was originally scheduled for March 1, but the winter storm warning that was to go into effect in the middle of the rally forced us to reschedule.

The Sports Car Club of America is the premier grass roots motor sports organization in the world. Events like the Kansas Rally Weekend can not occur without a significant volunteer effort on the part of many people. I mentioned these folks after the events, but a “Thank You” bears repeating to:

Derrick Carpenter for serving as safety stewards and for working checkpoints;

Albert Weaver for working checkpoints;

Doug Patterson for providing some great photos of the events.

Rally School

The day started early at 9:00 AM with a rally school. Following an introductory lecture on road rallies 11 teams set off on a 20 mile warm up rally to apply what they heard in the classroom.

Kansas Winter Rally

After a question and answer session back at the starting location, 12 cars set out on the 100 mile Kansas Winter Rally. The contestants started with a drive down 6th Street in Lawrence, where a fast food lunch was available. Following lunch the cars restarted at Coon Point, site of a campground on the Oregon Trail.

From Coon Point, the route went north through Lecompton and Perry, Kansas, up Ferguson Road to checkpoint 1 at the Civil War battle site near Hickory Point. Leg 1 went through Winchester and Easton to checkpoint 2 at the Limit turnout. Following a rest break in McLouth the route went south to checkpoint 3 on Stillwell Road and checkpoint 4 back at the Grant Township Community Center.

Contestants then gathered at the original Johnny's Tavern in north Lawrence for dinner and to await the announcement of the winners.

Thorns and Roses

It’s a tradition

in the Boy Scouts following an adventure to review the areas that have gone well (roses) as well as some items that could be improved for the future (thorns). Here is my list for the 2013 Rally Weekend.

Roses:

The turnout. 12 cars for a first-time event is very good.

Kansas Winter Rally Scores

lowered the workload on the checkpoint crews and speeded scoring. No one got (too) lost, everyone found the finish and there were smiles all around.

Thorns:

There were two mistakes in the instructions. “West” should have been “East” after the rest break, and NRI 59 should have been part of the NRI 58. We could have used another checkpoint worker to help Albert.

Thanks to all the competitors who came out and the workers who made the events possible. I hope to see you at another event in 2014. Next event: Kansas Rally Weekend, November 8 and 9. Saturday's event will be “East to Weston”, from Lawrence to Weston with a strict limit of 20 cars starting (space is limited at the Weston Brew Pub). Sunday will be the “Kansas River Run” rally over good quality unpaved roads, starting and ending in Lawrence. For those looking for another event near KC, on October 11 and 12 there will be two National Tour rallys in St. Louis. (Save-the-Date cards were distributed at the start). These events will be longer (100+ miles each), have about 4 to 6 checkpoints per day. Beginners are welcome.

Article by Lance Hamilton will be in

the July Checkpoint, explaining the

new Racing Class—CAM!

Greetings from the National Office from Chris Berg

For many in our Club, professional-level racing means many things. Some drivers as-pire to compete at the premiere levels of our sport. Other members regard pro racing as an opportunity to work in a volunteer capacity in one of the many ways in which our organization provides well-trained course marshals, and other officials. Still others see these big events as spectator events to enjoy from the bleachers with friends and family.

After reading the June issue of SportsCar, it got me thinking about the role professional racing has in SCCA. As many may know, SCCA Pro Racing is a wholly-owned subsidi-ary of the Club. The organization is responsible for sanctioning six open-wheel and sports car series, of which Pirelli World Challenge, Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires and Trans Am require the most input from full-time SCCA Pro Racing staff.

Unlike other amateur motorsports clubs, having an FIA-affiliated professional sanctioning body gives Club racers a prime opportunity to get involved in professional-level racing. In many cases, drivers can use the same cars driv-en in Club Racing to go pro. Among the six divisions of SCCA Pro Racing, there is at least one class where pro-fessionally-prepped cars are very similarly matched to those being raced at the Club level. The crossover means smaller budgets are needed to race in a pro series. Affordable add-ons are all that is needed to be competitive, ver-sus buying a new car built to completely different specifications.

SCCA Pro Racing also gives those who aren’t competitors the chance to get involved in professional racing. From timing to tech, a group of part-time field staff and full-time Pro Racing employees administer the events for the Pirelli World Challenge, Mazda MX-5 Cup and Trans Am series. For those interested in taking their knowledge to the next level, this is the perfect place to make that happen. As a staffer, one will be working with some of the most experienced and knowledgeable officiating crew in all of professional motorsports.

Aside from being the next step for a career-minded Club member, SCCA Pro Racing allows our organization to continue running some of the most historical and storied parts of our history. Trans Am is a prime example of this.

Starting in 1966, Trans Am served as a proving ground for American muscle cars and imports of many stripes. Stock car racing gave manufacturers a platform to show off the horsepower produced by these cars, but putting these big-bore cars to the test on permanent and temporary road courses around the country was truly unique. Making right and left turns more closely reflected the driving habits of the general public and allowed manufactur-ers to show off the handling characteristics of their particular cars.

For a number of decades after inception, Trans Am ran under the banner of the Club. The special needs demand-ed by professional-level racing made it increasingly apparent that a new organization was needed to look after the professional portion of the Club’s events. In 1993, SCCA Pro Racing became a formal subsidiary of SCCA. Since then, the organization has been responsible for the sanctioning and growth of several major American road-racing series.

The next time you hear a reference to SCCA Pro Racing, don’t forget that by being part of the Club you have a strong link to that level of motorsports. It also means you have the opportunity to become part of the pro racing world, either as a competitor or worker.

We’ll see you at the track.

Yakety Yak...

Dear Mom:

Tony & Kathy Giordano have a new great nephew. His name is Senna Cornelius Harmer. His proud parents are Brian & Kaleena Harmer who reside in Topeka, KS. Senna was born February 5th, 2014 at the Topeka Saint Francis Hospital. He weighed 9 lbs 7 oz and was 22” long. Brian said his first name was in fact named after one of the greatest F1 drivers. His middle name is after Kaleena’s grandfather. Their oldest son Matthew was named after Brian’s grandfather, Tony Sr. And of course, Senna is already a SCCA member.

Bill Rinke recently sent Mom an update on his wife Dodie. The Tuesday after Easter Dodie began residency at the Tablerock Healthcare Alzheimer Unit in Kimberling City, MO. Bill said her condition became increasingly worse during the past two months. During that time and at present there are only a few fleeting moments that she even knows who he is. He said she is receiving much better care now than what he was able to provide. She has received cards and flowers but does not understand what they are for but he tells her about them. Charlie & I were both so glad that Bill & Dodie were able to attend our retirement party.

Chuck Davis recently raced at Texas World Racetrack. His son has two Miatas so Chuck ran one of them Saturday and his son raced the other one both Saturday & Sunday.

Barbara Garrett’s father will celebrate his 95th birthday on May 21st, 2014. Dr Gene A Garrett resides in Clarinda, IA. Barbara said they were going to Clarinda a weekend early to help him celebrate.

Charlie & Mom’s granddaughter, Brittney Williams & Bryce Guthrie are living in Oceanside, CA now. She has been keeping us up-to-date about the terrible wild fires in that part of the country. She said that they cannot see the flames but the smoke is horrible. They recently moved from Encinitas to Oceanside but she travels back to Encinitas for work.

Our condolence to the family of Stephen Morris. Stephen, who passed away on April 19th after battling cancer for more than 3 years, was a former KCR member and also raced his Formula Atlantic at Heartland Park Topeka. He was employed at Stowers Research Institute before retiring in 2003. He leaves his wife Bibie and his mother, Esther.

Our condolence to Sean and Tammie Fischbach & their sons on the death of his mother, Ann Fischbach. Ann passed away on April 13th at the age of 71. Sean and family are former members of the KCR.

don’t look back…

KCR Recipe Corner

Grilled Carrots and Onions from Neava Ford

1 lb carrots peeled and sliced into about 1/2” rounds. 1 medium sweet onion chopped the way you like it. I cut it in quarters and slice so it’s bite size

but not too small 1 to 2 Tbs butter 1 to 2 Tbs brown sugar (to your taste) Wrap all in foil and throw on the grill until the carrots are tender. About 20 to 30 minutes depending on how hot the grill. Turn occasionally or they will burn.

SEND ME YOUR RECIPE AND I’LL PUT IT RIGHT HERE WHERE NEAVA’S RECIPE IS!
