All Aboard! ThomasTM

Heads for AberdeenThomas the Tank EngineTM is chugging into Aberdeen

on Saturday, Oct. 19, to meet all the fans of Thomas & Friends. Join us.

Thomas will be available for a free meet and greet event from Noon to 5pm at the Old Milwaukee Road Depot. Thomas will greet fans inside the depot at Noon, 2pm and 4pm.

The event is presented by SDPB in partnership with the Native American Cultural Center and Museum, which is housed in the depot and the James Valley Model Railroad Association, in the depot basement.

The free event includes a chance for families to have a photo taken with Thomas, enjoy science presentations by SDPB’s Science Steve, learn more about the area’s Native American heritage, meet SDPB’s mascot Buddy, and stop by the James Valley Model Railroad Association’s open house in the basement of the depot (noon to 5pm).

Aberdeen gained its nickname of “Hub City” from the days when a number of railroad lines converged on the northern South Dakota city. It’s a perfect place for an engine like Thomas.

Thomas & Friends is based on the books by Reverend W. Awdry, who created Thomas the Tank Engine to entertain his young son, Christopher. The series features Thomas, a true blue engine friend, and his friends and colleagues who show the value of cooperation, work and good manners. The series focuses on children ages 2 to 5.

Thomas & Friends, a PBS Kids program, airs on SDPB1 Television at 11:30am (10:30 MT) every weekday, beginning Oct. 7.

The Thomas and Friends event is supported by a grant from HIT Entertainment and WNET.

Focus Looks at Needs for Our RoadwaysSDPB1 Thursday, Oct. 31, 8pm (7 MT) Sunday, Nov. 3, 1pm (Noon MT)SDPB.org/SDFocus

South Dakota Focus continues its examination of South Dakota’s infrastructure this month with a look at roadways on SDPB1 Television on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 8pm (7 MT).

According to South Dakota’s Department of Transportation, one of the biggest challenges the state faces is the condition of the state’s roads. The program takes a close

look at the road system, the need for upgrades and funding issues.

In September, Focus examined the plight of bedroom communities, which face the dilemma of providing services when population is growing, but the business community – and sales taxes – are not.

Tune in, and follow the four-month series on infrastructure, which continues into December, or watch at SDPB.org/SDFocus.

Sandhill Cranes Continue Ancient Journey

A Sandhill crane dances in its Nebraska habitat.

SDPB1: Sunday, Oct. 13, 3pm (2 MT) SDPB2: Sunday, Oct. 13, 8pm (7 MT), Midnight (11 MT)

Each spring, between February and April, hundreds of thousands of Sandhill cranes soar into Nebraska on a journey that cranes have taken since the end of the last ice age more than 20,000 years ago.

Featuring spectacular cinematography of the cranes, “Crane Song” introduces some of the people captivated by the birds, including Michael Forsberg, one of the world’s premier crane photographers; paleontologist Mike Voorhies; and world-renowned ornithologist and author Paul Johnsgard, who has studied the birds for more than 40 years.

Eighty percent of the world’s Sandhill cranes make their way through a 75-mile stretch of Nebraska’s central Platte River Valley, a critical stopover in their 5,000-mile spring migration. But their habitat is at risk. Forsberg calls it “sheer spectacle. It’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen…”

The program also visits the International

Crane Foundation (ICF) in Baraboo, Wis., where aviculturist Sara Zimorski explains how Sandhill cranes have been instrumental in saving the highly endangered whooping crane.

Peg + Cat Debuts; Thomas & Friends Airs on WeekdaysA new PBS Kids program, Peg + Cat,

Thomas & Friends, which offers lessons on cooperation and good manners for ages

Frontline League of DenialSDPB1: Tuesday, Oct. 8, 8pm (7 MT)SDPB2: Friday, Oct. 11, 11pm (10 MT)PBS.org/Frontline

The National Football League, a multibillion-dollar commercial juggernaut, presides over this popular pastime. But the NFL is under assault as thousands of former players and a host of scientists claim the league has covered up how football inflicted long-term brain injuries on many players.

In a special investigation, Frontline joins prize-winning journalists Steve Fainaru and Mark Fainaru-Wada to reveal the hidden story of the NFL and brain injuries.

What did the NFL know and when did it know it?

American Experience War of the WorldsSDPB1: Tuesday, Oct. 29, 8pm (7 MT)PBS.org/AmericanExperience

On Sunday, Oct. 30, 1938, millions of Americans gathered around their radios and heard a news bulletin about strange explosions on Mars, followed by other reports that led them to believe an alien invasion was in progress.

American Experience relives the thrill of Orson Welles’ infamous radio dramatization of H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds,” 75

years after it set off one of the biggest mass hysteria events in U.S. history. The film examines the elements that made America ripe for the hoax.

We Bid Adieu to Jazz Great Marian McPartlandJazz musician Marian McPartland, who hosted Marian

McPartland’s Piano Jazz for more than 40 years, died in August. She was 95.

Piano Jazz, which aired for many years on SDPB Radio, provided an intimate, insider’s perspective on jazz music. The NPR program reached millions every week and McPartland, a skilled pianist herself, interviewed practically every major jazz musician of the post-WWII era.

Born in England, she came to the U.S. after marrying American musician Jimmy McPartland. She eventually found success in a jazz world dominated by men.

Dakota Sky Presents Top Classical Talents

Paul Tuntland Sanchez

Highlights of the 2013 Dakota Sky International Piano Festival air on SDPB Television in October thanks to the generosity of Dakota Sky and its major funders. The one-hour program airs on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 3pm (2 MT).

Major support for the Dakota Sky International Piano Festival and the planned program on SDPB Television comes from First Bank & Trust, First Dakota National Bank, the Washington Pavilion of Arts & Science, and Augustana College. Sponsors include the South Dakota Arts Council and Arts Midwest, plus businesses throughout the region and individual donors and friends.

The annual event features top up-and-coming talents in the classical music world. You can tune into some of the great performances from 2013 and learn more at www.dakotasky.org.

The Dakota Sky International Piano Festival brings world-class young artists to Sioux Falls during a two-week summer music event. The organization is dedicated to

the musical arts, offering solo and chamber music recitals, master classes for piano students, lectures on the world of music, and educational opportunities for children. The festival was founded by internationally acclaimed pianist Paul Tuntland Sanchez, a native of South Dakota.

South Dakota performance, history, beauty, people and places are at the heart of great programming at SDPB. As a Program Funder, you can be a part of upcoming projects.

To become a Program Funder or to find out more about upcoming SDPB projects, contact Ryan Howlett at 1-800-456-0556.
