Election season has arrived! In order to help our members make informed decisions on the ballot, the Chamber will host two upcoming events. While the Chamber does not endorse political parties or candidates as stated in the bylaws, the Chamber does address legislative issues that represent the interests of its members.

The Chamber will host an informational Forum on two measures that will appear on the November 6 ballot. The Forum is October 2, from 7:45–9:30 a.m. in the main conference room at the University of Central Missouri – Summit Campus (Door 54), 850 NW Chipman Road. A continental breakfast will be provided for attendees. There is no cost to attend.

The Forum will focus on:

• Proposition B – Creation of the Health & Education Trust Fund

with a proposed increase in the tax on tobacco products.

• Proposition E – Means by which the state can establish and operate a state-based health insurance exchange.

Speakers representing the opposing and supporting positions will be given fifteen minutes each to present their information with additional time allotted for questions from the audience. Thank you to Humana for sponsoring this forum.

Additionally, the Chamber and the Lee’s Summit Journal will host a Candidates Forum on October 16 from 6–8 p.m. at Legacy Park Community Center, 901 NE Bluesteam Drive.

Lee’s Summit City Council Proclaimed September as Lee’s Summit Symphony Month

Mayor Randy Rhoads and the Lee’s Summit City Council helped launch a year-long celebration of the Lee’s Summit Symphony’s 10th anniversary at the September 6 Council meeting. Together the Mayor and Council Members proclaimed September 2012 as Lee’s Summit Symphony Month.

Pictured at City Hall are (from left) Mayor Rhoads, Symphony President Bob White and Symphony Music Director Russell Berlin. The Symphony’s 10th anniversary logo was also displayed during the meeting.

The Lee’s Summit Symphony is planning a number of special activities during its anniversary year, including a June 15, 2013, special concert at the Kauffman

Center for Performing Arts in Kansas City. This anniversary event is exclusively sponsored by Saint Luke’s East Hospital in Lee’s Summit.

To further celebrate the orchestra’s anniversary, 10-year-olds will be admitted free to all 2012-13 concerts with the exception of the celebration at the Kauffman in June 2013.

Upcoming concerts include the Fall Classic at 7:30 p.m. October 13 and Holiday Magic at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. December 8, all at the Lee’s Summit High School performing arts center. Concert tickets may be purchased at

both Lee’s Summit Hy-Vee stores or online at www.lssymphony.org.

Sixteen of the Lee’s Summit Chamber’s finest members are bringing their best moves to the dance floor on October 25 at the Hilton Garden Inn Independence. Proceeds raised through votes will go toward the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund. Through the fund, the Chamber awards four $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors each year.
