3RD Annual Autumn in the Irish Hills…

Better known as “Coldwater”, this event was mine and Steve Penczak‟s brainchild three years ago. It has since met with limited success, with a multitude of reasons\excuses for lack of attendance. Steve even had his doubts coming into this year‟s event caused by having had rain for the past two years.

However, I was dead fast in my opinion that this is\was a great event and still believe it was the best “bang for the buck” event around. With new roads to ride, restaurants to be kicked out of, and the creation of new experiences to pass along at campfires yet to be ignited. Those that could not attend for valid reasons…crap happens...those that would not attend for silly reasons…shame on you.

At this point in time and with all things considered, I believe Waffle Farms is”THE BEST” campground the “Cruisers” have chosen to utilize in the all the years the club has been running camping trips.

This year we added two new destinations to the previous year‟s “Ride to Hell” (which was shelved this year)…the Air Zoo and Gilmore Car Museum, both of which are unique in their own way, were outstanding places to visit.

On the way to the “Air Zoo”, Friday, we turned a corner of one of the new roads we were discovering and came upon one of the nicest covered bridges I have seen in years. It was really neat so we stopped and took some pictures. As we puttered along on our planned route we happened to find a few of Michigan‟s less than prime riding roads, a couple which would have challenged an experienced rider.

In retrospect, maybe the Friday ride was a bit too long. Maybe I could have made a better route selection and possibly shortened the route a tad, but that is the problem when you have Steve and I doing the pre-rides, we just ride the route as planned and we just deal with what comes along, and I guess sometimes we kind of lose perspective (on occasion) of the

riders following us that we are trying to “ENTERTAIN”. The Air Zoo itself was neat but had some disappointments like the food was less than gourmet and we (11 people) totally overwhelmed the snack bar staff, resulting in extremely slow service for most of us. Also the listing for the shows in the 3-D theater confused some of us (me) and we (I) did not get to see the movie we wanted to view. The displays of planes, aviation equipment, space craft, nostalgia items and such are impressive but the best part of our visit was the “Flight Simulator”. Roger O‟Lena with George Barrington as his co-pilot, had so much fun that he went and purchased me a ticket just to get Steve P. and myself to ride in it. It was the most fun one can have sitting down with your clothes on and, as we exited the simulator, we saw that Flo and Roger had been standing out there watching us, and were laughing so hard they were in tears. Steve and I were right there with them…go there…try it…you‟ll see.

Saturday was a new day and a new destination; this time “The Gilmore Car Museum”. This is a car guy‟s Mecca, but it is something that even a non-car guy will find impressive. This place is huge with eight (and more under construction, or in the planning stage) out-buildings full of motorcars\motorcycles\peddle cars and even a building devoted to hood ornaments from days gone by (I am not one to refer to older things as antiques, well, except for Steve‟0). This place is so nicely kept that, if you chose too, one could eat off the floor of any one of these buildings. Speaking of which George and Sally‟s Blue Moon Diner is located on the premises and they serve some very good food and some really tasty homemade pies, cherry for me, pecan for Steve, all of this served up in a very friendly atmosphere. So calorie up folks because you‟re going to need the stored energy for all the walking you‟ll need to do if you choose to see everything which will take you at least half-a-day.

One exhibit of note is an old Shell gas station; you know the ones with the rubber hose across the driveway that rings the bell every time you would ride your bicycle over it when you were a kid. There is so much to see at the Gilmore that it is really a hard place to describe, so go to the web site and have a look around, or contact me and I can give you a copy of the “Coldwater” presentation I made at the September meeting.

The Air Zoo and The Gilmore Car Museum are only 20 miles apart so if you want a good short

weekend trip go to Kalamazoo, find a cheap place to stay, and you can do both of these places in one day, the Air Zoo in the morning…leave…arrive at Gilmore Car Museum …have lunch at the diner (Mom‟s cherry pie yummmmmm)…walk off the lunch…go back to the temporary home base and crash….not a bad idea for a weekend event.

Earlier Than Dinner Run

What‟s in a name? Whether it is a breakfast

run, lunch run, dinner run or supper run, it

really is just an excuse to ride and to eat.

Some people refer to the noon day meal as

lunch and others call it dinner which is also the

last meal of the day. So to head off any

confusion, the run on September 15th was

called the “Earlier Than Dinner Run”.

The group of 16 people on 12 bikes departed

the Hoffman Estates McDonald‟s at 10:00 a.m.

Led by Tom Kearney, we wandered our way

through side streets through West Dundee

instead of taking Route 72. What an interesting

way to get through that area! We wandered

through Sleepy Hollow to the rest stop near

Burlington. After the rest stop we headed south

and west on more country roads as we twisted

and turned to our destination in Maple Park, IL

to the Maple Park Pub and Grill, which is a

small, homey establishment. One person

manned the grill which was located right in the

bar so one could watch the meals being

prepared. The bartender was also the waitress.

The portions were generous- the large burgers

consisted of13 oz. of meat and the atmosphere

was friendly.

It was a terrific day for a ride, no matter what it

was called, with friends and good food. Thanks

for the great ride, Tom!

Motorcycling Coping Rules

1. All your fellow Cruisers seem normal until you really get to know them.

2. You only need to bring two tools with you on any motorcycle trip; WD-40 and a roll of duct tape. If it doesn‟t move and it shouldn‟t, WD-40 it! If it moves and it shouldn‟t, duct it!

3. Never, and I mean never pass up an opportunity to pee.

4. The length of a minute depends on which side of the port-a-john door you‟re on.

5. Never try to fix a flat tire after you‟ve had four beers.

6. Ride like hell and you are bound to get there.

7. If your Significant Other says that you are too good for him/her--------------believe them.

8. The six most essential words for a healthy and rewarding motorcycle trip with your S.O. are: “I’m sorry.” and “You’re absolutely right, dear.”

9. While riding in the rain a truly happy motorcyclist is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

10. And finally, be nice to your Cruiser friends because you don‟t know when you are going to need them to change your oil….or your diaper.

Autumn in the Irish Hills (R.I.P.?):

The weather may have threatened rain, and the weatherman did say it would, but the Autumn in the Irish Hills Campout in Coldwater, MI was still a success because we never got rained on while on the bike. To those that didn't come, it was definitely your loss as this could be our last campout at this location. Many thanks to our Chairman, Joe Fiedler for the two wonderful destinations he provided and the interesting rides to and from them that he laid out. I hope the other 12 people in attendance had as good of a time as I did. You can read the weekend high-lights in the AITH article located on page 2 in this month's newsletter.

Earlier than Dinner Run:

Many thanks to Tom Kearney for planning this event and leading the ride to the Maple Park Pub. It was a beautiful weekend and, I believe, 16 persons showed up for what was promised to be an approximately 75 mile ride to our destination. The ride departed on time at 10 a.m. from the Hoffman Estates McDonald‟s and headed west. Then we headed north. Then we headed south. then east. then south, etc.....(Note: This is not criticism) The sun was shining, the temperature was rising and the blacktop was disappearing beneath us as we weaved our way toward Maple Park. It was shortly before 1 p.m. and about 70 some miles later when we arrived at our destination in downtown(?) Maple Park, Illinois. We all found parking in front of the pub, entered and sat down for lunch. We were spread out over four tables but were close enough so that we could all hear each other. It didn't take long before all of us had ordered and for the food to start arriving at the tables. From where I sat (on a not-to-stable-stool I might add) it appeared everyone was happy with their cuisine, and as is wont to happen whenever a bunch of Cruisers' try to eat and try to get caught up on the latest adventures of their riding friends, laughter and conversations get loud and bits and pieces of the verbal exchanges are missed.

With lunch over and it being a very nice day we headed out to our bikes. The group broke up into twos and threes and rode off in different directions. Some to further explore the area, some to finish out the afternoon riding, and some, myself included, just headed for home.

By my standards it was a very good day for a ride and as far as I am concerned this was a great one. Thanks again Tom, I'll look forward to your next planned event.

Remember; Work is good, but not that important. Go for a ride!

Safety Corner - Federal Highway Administration Motorcycle Crash Research Under Fire Dr. Samir Ahmed, the researcher and engineer leading the latest motorcycle crash causation study for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has resigned citing "serious reservations about the value of this study". The study was to examine 1200 crashes but due to insufficient funding, the number was cut back to about 300, then to just 120 crashes. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) had raised commitments from its members to provide $3 million to the study but pulled out when the crash numbers were slashed. Further cuts reduced the number of locations to study from 3 down to 1. The reduced study began last year. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has voiced some serious questions about this study since its conception and elected not to lobby Congress to mandate the study. "It is no question that we need more information on why motorcycles crash, but with such limited resources in the motorcycle safety world we should be putting them toward proper motorcycle rider education and motorist awareness to prevent crashes," said Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs for the MRF.
