DDDeeeaaarrr OOOnnneeesss,

I subscribe to Google alerts and received one today that was a blog from a FP4H member. I have no idea where this group meets, but thought her post was worth a discussion in our E-Newsletter. This group is doing the FP4H Bible Study Walking in Grace and this member did a study on the word “grace,” which then initiated her post:

I returned to the First Place 4 Health Bible study and support group after having been absent for over a year. The core group of women was still present, as well as several new enrollees. While listening to several of the core members, I realized one was still discussing the same issue—how to keep from going to Starbucks for mocha lattes. For the three years she had been with us in the group, she was still struggling with mocha lattes. She had lost no weight over the course of the three years. To my horror, the ladies laughed it off and then began talking about other unhealthy snacks they preferred. The answer from the leader, “Well, we’ll just have to pray for you this week.”

Where is grace in that? The member should have been confronted about how she was taking the FP4H commitments and making them a mockery. She should have been given a plan for having success in making better choices that involved her husband and children to help hold her accountable. How was extending more grace influencing the new members to put off the unhealthy habits that created the fat rolls and put on healthy habits instead? It created instead a loophole for those new members. “When I consistently make wrong choices, there will be more grace extended to me,” is what they will begin to believe. In AA circles this is called “enabling the addict.”

Our FP4H group should attend some AA meetings. If an alcoholic were to confess that they struggled with going through the drive-through to purchase wine coolers, the AA leader and the other members would spend a large amount of time confronting that member and coming up with a plan for more accountability. How do I know that? I used to attend 2-3 AA meetings a week and witnessed several times how weak members were confronted about their choices. No grace. They were rebuked, instructed in the rules of AA, and offered help to be victorious one day at a time. Why should we women who make FP4H commitments to eat healthy and follow the “Live It plan” be treated any differently? Come on, FP4H friends—stop using grace as an excuse for bad behavior!

Continued from page one Here is my reply to her post: I am not writing as the director of the First Place 4 Health program, but as a FP4H leader who has been leading for 30 years. As such, I surely understand the frustration of the blogger. The problem here is that the group feels free to share their rebellion to the class instead of humbly asking for prayer. My class would never feel free to make those comments in class because I, as the leader, would never wink at such comments. That said, however, I am a grace giver because God has shown so much mercy and grace to me. I also have no power to make someone change anything. I have these women one hour a week, but for the next seven days they have to do the hard work of change I believe success is a 3-step plan: 1) God will give me the strength to say no if I ask Him. 2) Others will encourage and support me in my efforts. 3) I have to do the hard work. No one has arrived and everyone is susceptible to falling; this is why we need to show love and grace. I have heard grace defined as "unmerited favor" and this is what I desire to show to my class members. I believe that unconditional love, the kind of love that God shows me, is what will win hearts over all the legalism in the world. I was in Illinois last weekend and I heard a testimony that said it all for me. A lady said that when she came to our FP4H Wellness Week last year, she was walking with a cane. She never did any exercise because she could barely walk. At the end of the week she lost 9 pounds and went home to join a FP4H group. Her cholesterol and blood pressure were so high that she was unable to obtain health insurance because of her high risk. Today, a year later, she has lost 40 pounds. Although not quite at her goal, her cholesterol is 168; her blood pressure 120/80 and she now has health insurance. She shared that she still had not exercised at all, but a family member gave her a bicycle with training wheels and she is riding that bike every day! Success is in the process, not in a program. I think it would help if your group would watch the emotional mapping DVD. I showed 20 minutes each week for three weeks and for those willing to actually do the mapping, I put their names in a basket and drew one out each week for a prize. I saw tremendous strides, and some ladies started losing weight that had really been struggling. What I love most about FP4H is that we deal with the total person: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. God created us this way and Jesus said in Mark 12:30-31 that the greatest commandment is "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. The second is this, love your neighbor as yourself." It has been hard, but I am learning that obedience is the love language of God. He says all through His Word, “If you love me, you will obey me.” I believe my job as a FP4H leader is to love my members so much that they realize God loves them even more than I do and they want to obey Him because they love Him. Any other motive is doomed to failure. CCaarroollee LLeewwiiss

I have heard back from many of you who are anxiously awaiting the final five ways to kill your class. After 15 years of leading and observing those classes who experience success and those who don’t, there are some common ways leaders sabotage the success of the class and may not even know it. The first five were listed in the September newsletter so if you missed them, be sure and go back to that edition. It’s time to do some self-leadership analysis and make sure these common mistakes are not holding you or your class back from success. Take a close look at this list and if you are doing any of these things, stop and make a change. The final five are here—just as promised. 5. Focus only on the negatives. Are you the kind of

person who, when hearing that the Berlin Wall came down, felt sorry that the guards were now out of a job? If so, you probably ignore other positive things. Doing so will demotivate your class. I realize that the world cannot be continually viewed through the proverbial rose-colored glasses, but try to see positive elements in a situation, even bad ones. One lady in my class went six weeks without a weight loss. That could truly be viewed as a negative situation but as she pointed out to me, this is the first summer in her life that she has been able to maintain her weight and not gain over a summer spent taking vacation. It can make a difference and your focus will be contagious.

4. Allow the class to become just a Bible study.

First Place 4 Health is a faith-based weight loss program based on biblical principals that we apply through study of the Bible. We think our Bible studies are some of the best out there, but if we remove the focus from wellness and weight loss, there will be no success in the class as far as

physical health gains. Most churches have plenty to offer in the area of Bible study, but very little dealing with the physical problems of living in these bodies! People joining your class will expect to be involved in excellent Bible study, but also to lose weight, as they should!

3. Close the class to newcomers. As a long time leader, I know it is tempting not to have an orientation and just continue with the same group for “bonding” purposes. What that really translates to in my opinion is less work for the leader. It’s a lot of work on our part to make sure those newcomers get the basic principals of the food plan, keeping their Live It Trackers and understanding the connection between the spirit and the body. Choosing not to bring in new folks to the class is a surefire way for the class to die a slow death. Think for a minute—what do new folks bring to the class? They bring a fresh outlook; they bring new excitement; they bring answers and challenge. Most people really do well in their first session, so momentum is created with the newcomers’ weight loss. Without the newbies, we will get stuck in a rut!

2. Be your own accountability partner. According to a recent survey quote in a popular women’s magazine, when asked if the weight listed on their current driver’s license is correct, 68% of the women confessed to lying about their weight. That being the case, how in the world can I be my own accountability partner? I know for myself personally, if I do not have someone in my class weigh me each week, I will not lose weight. And if the leader is not losing, then that will affect all of the other dynamics of the class. It really does rise and fall on leadership.

Page 4: October 2011 2fp4h.agroup.com/downloads/newsletter/FirstPlace... · sure these common mistakes are not holding you or your class back from success. Take a close look at this list

And now—the Number One way to kill your class… 1. Have a bad attitude.

How is your attitude? Do you start the class by commenting how small the room is or how the church staff is not supporting you? Do you comment on the low attendance of the group? Are you vocally critical of the materials or of yourself? The truth is a negative attitude will attract more negative. I am amazed at how many groups are led by negative people. It really makes me wonder about the possibility of success for the leader, as well as for the class. I can peruse the website and see class after class that is no longer meeting and I cannot help but wonder about the leadership. Negative attitudes are also reflected in the mail I receive. Here is a small sample: I am using the new materials and I truly dislike this new way to track food. I have talked to my class and they too feel very confused and really hate it. Any suggestions?

One more: I am leading a class right now and I really hate filling out charts. Your Bible studies are full of charts, can you take these out? Honestly, think about this for a moment. If you were a member of this class and this was your leader speaking, how would that make you feel? Pretty negative, huh?

Every one of these Top Ten Ways to Kill Your Class can be avoided. As leaders, we must always be mindful of leading well and not letting any of these practices slip into our leadership. If my class needs to come to an end, I want that to be the Lord’s doing and not mine! I want my leadership to be reflected in a healthy, successful and growing class.

I am praying you will have the best year ever in leading First Place 4 Health. Leading With Success!

Fall is one of the best times to get outdoors and do something active. The heat of summer is gone; humidity is down and there are no more excuses for putting off exercise in the Great Outdoors!

You don’t need a lot of equipment when you step outside to enjoy God’s beautiful autumn world. Just put on some good walking shoes and head out the door with eyes to see the beauty of the fall leaves. Start by adding daily walks in the morning, lunch time or evening. Breathe deeply, relax, and take time to pray and count your blessings while you walk. Start by thanking God for all he has done for you, and all he has in store for you in the days to come.

Plan a Fall Fitness Trip! On weekends, plan something with family or friends—maybe a hiking trip to a nearby scenic spot or a bike ride along a historic bike path. Pack a healthy picnic and treat yourself to a day of health and fitness. Look at your calendar for a fall holiday weekend and plan a “fall fitness trip.” Get a group together and plan a day or a whole weekend of active fun with people you enjoy. You can go somewhere near that you haven’t visited in a long time or plan a trip to a new place that you have never explored before. Be creative and think outside the box. For example, the beach is a great place in the fall—less crowded than during the summer months, perfect for long walks and fun swims, if you don’t mind the water a bit on the cooler side.

Pray and ask the Lord to give you ideas and guide you to people who share your desire to stay physically fit. Seek ways to include spiritual fitness, along with your physical fitness activities. Fill your mind with the word of God and use your fitness time as Scripture memory time, too. Listen to powerful Christian music that will encourage you while you exercise. You will be amazed at the difference it makes in the attitude of your heart and your mind. God will bless you, as you enjoy the beauty he has created!

Do You have a Plan?

Steve Reynolds [email protected]

Each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor. 1 Thessalonians 4:4

You’ve probably heard the adage that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. You can have all the goals in the world, but if you don’t have a plan to reach them, you’ll never reach your goals. I want to help you discover and create a feasible plan to achieve whatever goal God has placed on your heart. Maybe you don’t know what your goal should be. James 1:5 says, If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. Whenever we are in a quandary, we can ask God for wisdom. I challenge you to do so as you create a plan to achieve your goal. Ask God to lead you. There are many plans to weight loss, sticking to a plan is the key to weight loss. Choose a plan that is best for YOU. One of the main reasons most people fail on traditional diet plans is that they are told to eat what other people choose for them to eat. This approach simply doesn’t work for most people because we don’t all have the same appetites, background or circumstances. Healthy living is about crafting your own plan that you will do gladly for the rest of your life. Get a multitude of counsel. Start talking to people about all the options for weight loss so you can figure out what will work best for you. Listen to what worked for them and consider how to adapt a program for specific needs. Get input from lots of sources on your plan. This is a biblical concept as well. Proverbs 15:22 says, Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors they are established. Don’t wait to make your plan—do it now. Advance decision-making is critical to a healthy lifestyle. Another Proverb has really helped me here, A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are punished. Proverbs 22:3. Healthy living requires foresight. It helps to follow a routine. When you start making changes, your body will probably resist change at first. If you get on a routine, your body will get used to it. Make healthy eating a major part of your routine. Eat smaller portions and let your body get used to less food. Think about the law of sowing and reaping in relationship to your health. Galatians 6:8 says, He who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption. If you sow to your flesh by eating anything you want to eat, and if you don’t exercise, you’re going to corrupt your body. But if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap life. Encourage yourself. It is important to encourage yourself because when you begin to make changes, it is very hard to follow through. Those first few weeks and days are difficult. Be encouraged that repetition will train your body to perform new habits and crave new things. If you will hang in there, you can retrain your body. The very foundation of building a healthy lifestyle is to realize that God gave you life and a body, and you’re to please him in the things you do with them. We know what we should do to have better health, but self that gets in the way. Self wants to eat the foods that are not healthy. Self doesn’t want to exercise. Self doesn’t want to die daily. But it’s the only way we can lose to live. SStteevvee RReeyynnoollddss

Please Don’t Quit!

A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly. P ROV E R B S 1 4 : 2 9

One of the most common reasons people give up on exercise is a lack of immediate results. It takes time for change to take place in our bodies. Developing patience with and proficiency in the area of exercise may be one of the biggest challenges for us, but it is well worth the effort. I recall one dear lady in my class in Charleston, South Carolina, who had decided she was going to work diligently at her commitment to exercise. She walked faithfully every day for one week, and when she got on the scale to see how much weight she had shed, she had stayed the same. She immediately began to cry and said, “It’s no use—I am just going to quit. I won’t be back next week.” We all have had the same experience. I gently reminded her that the scale cannot measure everything that is going on in her body. It can only measure what she has on—her bones, blood, skin and major organs. Furthermore, it takes time for our bodies to really get in shape, more than just one week! It’s not reasonable to think that the weight we put on in one year can all come off in a matter of weeks. I encouraged her to be patient with herself, gain some understanding about the human body, and remain faithful. She did, and she lost more than 40 pounds in two sessions! How foolish we are when we forget that success is in the process! I am reminded that it takes time in all four areas in my life—mental, emotional, physical and spiritual—for my life to change, and I praise God that He is not quick tempered and impulsive with me! Prayer: Dear God, grant me this day patience and understanding from Your Holy Spirit, and keep me from impulsive foolishness!

I believe I finally understand this program. I started First Place 4 Health in 2004, and lost 20 lbs. the first 12-week session. I did not stay with the program and about a year later, I gained the weight back. I was not as successful the second time I tried it. It seemed at that time the focus was on the food, rather than why we ate. The third and forth time I did the program was in 2005 and 2006—again not with a lot of success. I felt like such a loser, because I was unable to get rid of the weight again. I never stayed with FP4H a full consecutive year, but participated in about four 12-week sessions over three years.

I am so grateful to God that He did not give up on me. He is so faithful. I guess I am just very thick-headed and stubborn, so it takes a lot of shaking to finally wake me up. This time at FP4H has been very different. I truly believe that I understand the concepts so much better and I am finally learning to surrender it all to God more of the time. I am changing little by little in all four areas of my life. Physically, I am exercising more and actually learning to enjoy it; I realize it is a gift that I give to me. Exercising and listening to the memory verses on the Bible study CD has helped me a great deal. I had to give away most of my 2X clothes and I am getting sizes large and 12, which is really fun. I had to cut back on of my medication because my blood pressure was getting too low. I am eating healthier and really enjoying the good foods. I plan good meals and do better things for myself than eating. Carole Lewis (national director of FP4H) said, “When wondering what to do, ‘just do the next right thing.’" This saying has helped me greatly when wondering what I need to do next. I have lost 43 lbs. and am more at peace with myself.

Mentally, my focus is on Jesus. I realize that I am worth taking care of and that God loves me and desires good things for me. I no longer believe the counterfeit liar who tells me his way is better. I have believed his lies too long and I know it is such a deception. I remind myself that food cannot solve my problems, but only add to them. Food cannot comfort me; only Jesus can. He knows everything about me and loves me despite my failures and faults—just as I am.

Emotionally, I am not wavering and inconsistent as I was before. I am not blaming others for why I am not taking care of this body. I am the one who has the power to decide to exercise and to eat healthy. When I feel hungry, angry, lonely or tired, I look to Jesus and pray about it, not just stuff my feelings with any food.

Finally, and most important, my spiritual life is so improved. I feel closer to God and turn to Him when I need His help. The Bible studies are so great. Reading my Bible every day, working the Bible study, and learning more about His will and desires for my life is changing me. This is the greatest part of the program. When I focus on how much God loves me and wants good things for me, it makes me love Him more and desire to please and honor Him.

As an onion skin is peeled away layer by layer, so My God is working with me. I am so grateful to all the ladies at Grace Covenant FP4H group. They have been so encouraging, which is another part of this great program. Every week as we gather to go over proper nutrition and sharing the Bible study, we also encourage and pray for each other. We will help each other finally be victorious over our flesh and arrive at the place God has for each one of us. As Jeremiah 29:11 says, "For I know the plans I have for you" declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
