Artists Gallery: Abstract Paintings - October 3 November 2, 2007The energies and rhythms emanating from the sun and the moon are instruments of her artmaking process. Vesta Kirby has an amazing eye for understanding the use of color and love of

the natural world. The "Radiant Energy" Paintings are large scale acrylic diptychs; luminousenergy fields of light and of color. One canvas lays over another in vibrating complementarycontrast painted in multilayered gradations of transparent colors. Light is Energy. Color isEnergy. In nature color is seldom seen flat, but gradates from light to dark, and intensity, oftenfrom one hue to another in reflecting light from a surface. As in music color is vibrating energy.A symphony of multi-layered glazes plays in luminous layers, singing to awaken the eye. Thesilent language of color speaks to the subconscious and expands our conscious awareness. Formany years I have focused on the interaction of changing light reflecting off a myriad of surfacesas I walk through the day.Location: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Building A, Fort Mason Center, SF, CA 94123For more information: 415 441 4777 or www.sfmoma.org.

On the Road to Sustainability: From Research to Practice: October 29 -31, 2007Transportation systems around the world are facing tremendous challenges that are economic, environmental and social in nature. In the United States, two key issues are becoming largedrivers of policy changes and debate. First, global warming threatens our fragile environment.Policymakers, researchers and the public are increasingly looking to the transportation sector toreduce its impact. Second, the primary federal funding source for transportation, the HighwayTrust Fund, will have a significant shortfall in just two years. Creative financing and demandmanagement strategies are needed to sustain high quality transportation infrastructure and

services. California faces a special set of challenges. By 2025, Californias population isexpected to reach 50 million a population larger than that of many nations. Californiastransportation system will have to meet the challenge of rapid growth while at the same timesecuring future economic prosperity, environmental quality and social equity.

This years PATH-UTC conference will address these critical issues. We will examine the topicof sustainable transport from all angles -- technology, policy, planning, engineering, social andenvironmental impact, economics and finance.and will draw from experiences in the UnitedStates and abroad. The three-day conference has been designed to bridge research and practice, with 35 presentations, a poster session, and ample time for participant comments, questions, anddiscussion. Conference participants will help shape the future agendas of the participatingresearch groups by sharing ideas on needed improvements and innovative concepts. Conferenceregistration is at the low rate of $100, which will help defray costs for meals and the conference

reception. The event will be held at the Doubletree Hotel at the Berkeley Marina, where roomsare available to participants at the discounted room rate of $139 per night plus tax. Were looking forward to having you join us in Berkeley!
