FEAST OP THE HOLY THEOTOKOS PROTECTION

On October 14, our church celebrates the Feast of the HolyThootokos Protect ion. Even though i t is not one of the twelve majorfeasts of the year, this feast is always celebrated. Many circlesof Serbian Sisters bear its name ".Po^oj2. Er^osvctc Bogorodice^ orProtection of the Blessed Virgin. ^EIs feast is the Patron oainto f our Canton o i rc le o f Serb ian S is ter^_

The event commomorated on, this day, hajxp^enod in the year 903 A»D«The Byzantine Empire was being invaded by its enemies and the cityof Constantinople was in great danger. An al l-night vigi l servicewas ho ld in one o f i ts churches. Dur ing th is serv ice , a s t range andv/ondorful vision was seen by a man, called Andrev;, who happened tobe standing in the crowd. Ho sav/ Mary, the Mother of Our Lord,surrounded by angel's and- saints, entering the- Church, :walking as ifon air, above the people. She stopped before the Royal Doors, whoreshe prayed for a long while. -Tearsran down-hcr face as she prayed*As she turned tov/ard the people, she took off tbic vei l that coveredher head and spread it in a gesture of- protection over the heads ofthe people. The veil glistened and shone as bright as the sunshine.

Andrew v/atchcd this protect ing vei l unt i l the Thootokos becameinvis ib le. He spoke to the people in the Church, encouraged themand comforted thorn. The enemy v/ithd^id-Sv-without destroying the city.

In those Antiphons, the liturgioal drama is being.developed stepby step. Tho^ First Antiphon glorifies God as before the ii-dvent ofJesus Christ,* the Second Aetiphon dwells on the hyst.ry of theIncarnat ion, and the Third / in t iphon deals wi th the miss ionary work ofJ e s u s C h r i s t .

The F i r s t An t i phon . cons i s t s o f t he Psa lm-103 , i n -wh i ch t he Nameof God is g lor ified, .as w'e l l as His mercy and r ighoousnoss. Usual ly,only the first verse of the Psalm is chanted, prefaced by theg l o r i fi c a t i o n o f t h e . H o l y T r i n i t y . '

The Second Antiphon consists of the Psalm 146 and the hymndedicated to the Only-Bcgotton Son of God. The hymn is prefaced byt h e g l o r i fi c a t i o n o f t h e H o l y T r i n i t y . I t p o i n t s o u t t h e s a l i e n tfac ts in the luys tc ry o f the Incarna t ion . The -compos i t ion o f th iss i g n i fi c a n t h y m n i s a t t r i b u t e d t o t h e B y z a n t i n e E m p e r o r J u s t i n i a n(527-565). Usually, the Psalm 146 is omitted from the Second imtiphona n d o n l y t h i s h y m n i s s u n g .

The Third Antiphon consists of eight hymns, of which number thefi r s t s i x a r c p r o f a o o d b y t h e B c a t i t u d c s - - t h c i n t r o d u c t o r y p a r t o four Lord's Sermon on the iviount (iit. 5:7-12). The last two hymns arcp r e f a c e d b y t h e g l o r i fi c a t i o n o f t h e H o l y Tr i n i t y. In the Orthodox calendar,-there are~1toe~--sainti5 by the name Paraskeva. TheFareskeva was of Serbi^ nationality. She is commemorated on October

liith, which is Octdber 27th according to .the new style.calendar.The second St.Paraskeva^was a martyr who. lived, and died in the 3rd century^ She is commemoratedon October 28 (Nov. IQth new style). T^. thirxi St. Paraskeva is the so-calledRoman. Paraskeya. In Serbian, she is called Trnova petka. She. died a martyr'sdeath in t|ie 2nd century. She, is commemorated on Juiy 26th (August "Sth new style).

m the Serbian Orthodox calendar, of the three saints' days only the day ofthe Serbiah St. Paraskevaregarded as a medium holiday. In the calendar, itIS a red-lettered holiday. The days of the other two saints are classified aslittle holidays (eve.iy-day^daints).

There,-she took the monastic vows in'thefamous cathedral of St. Sophia and dedicated herself to-an ascetic, life, which meansto a life of a.y®ry strict self—discipline, self-denial, constant fasting, prayerand meditatidrt. Aften a'#lil'e, she went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (pales-tine), where she visited all the holy places. During this-pilgrimage, St. Paraskeva decided to settle in the Holy Land. St.. Paraskeya decided to return to her nativeiland to die inher birthplace. Many.ha?i passed sinca-she left the' citylOffEpivat. ^Princess Militza, the widow of the famous Lazar ]^eb6l-battle'on Kossovo Field;, obtained pefsmission from the

Turkish Sultan arfd ..transferred her remains to Belgrade. In 1^21, Sultan Suleimanthe Second tr sferred her remains to Constantinople and deposited them in hispalace. In l6iil, her remains were transferred to the city of Jassy, in Rumania,where they are still reposing.

O n S u n d a y , 2 0 t h , t h eannual church picnic ivas hold at the K of G picnic grounds. Thanksto the .x-n's Club, who helped make it a success by ^bringing in .theHen's SlcApi i tch Leagues from Al iquippa, midland and kassi l lon.Aliquippa took Union hravvTi by a score of 2 to 1; Canton boat midland10 to 5. Al iquippa won the trophy by boat ing Canton 7 to 0. The first y^ar of church camp ended v/ith much success, dpspitcthe many obstacles that occur at the opening of any now camp. The Hen's Bowling League started on September 4th, at the HolidayLanos. They are Hike V/uchenich, C-ptain; Hike Trbovich; Mike Babies;George Babies; Tod TrboviCh; Doc Hill, and Joe Rvsanovich. The Women's League started on S^'ptcmber 11th at the College BowlLanes. Thoy won throe, and lost one.
