Reflections on Pope Francis’ Message
I’ve been thinking about Pope Francis’ encouragement for us to recognize that we, too, have been giventhe responsibility to engage in the Church’s missionary outreach. After all, it was this sense of purposethat compelled our patron, St. Junipero Serra to venture to California from Spain. I bet I’m not the onlyone in the parish, though, who can admire our saint’s zeal while still uncomfortable with following inhis footsteps. We Catholics, for the most part, aren’t street preachers, let alone doortodoor evangelists. This leaves us all a little flat footed. So, I’ve done a little canvassing of some parish leaders on howthey’ve been able to speak to others about their faith in ways that were natural and inviting, rather thanpushy.
One parishioner shared how a neighborhood progressive block party became an opportunity towitness to her neighbors. It seemed so natural, in that gettingtoknowyou time, while sharing on theparts of her life that mattered most to her, to talk about the role that Padre Serra parish played in her life. She didn’t have to be preachy or forceful. She was simply able to share about how she was beingspiritually nourished. She spoke about the Christmas concert and the beautiful Christmas Masses thatwere coming up. She learned that a few of her new neighbors were parishioners, too. It’s worthconsidering if we’re making use of times like these in our own lives, not to tell other people what to door how they should live their lives, but to share how our participation in our faith, and in our parish, ishelping us become the people we’d like to be. If someone is open or searching, they just might visit uson a Sunday simply because we witnessed to the value the parish has been for us. It’s worth considering.
Another parish leader found opportunities in her many family weekend activities in sports eventsand the like to invite the other participants to join them for Mass on Sunday. Again, she wasn’t beingpreachy, just inviting. Along the same line, yet another parishioner expressed how important it is, whensomeone ventures to our church for the first time, to be with someone familiar. She makes a point ofinviting people to join her on Sunday. She found this encouragement particularly successful, as anumber of people searching for a place to belong, in fact, became parishioners, and she still sees themevery weekend at Mass.
Please consider how inviting Pope Francis’ message is withoutbeing preachy, technical or theological. He doesn’t quote theCatechism, nor does he make a point of saying “The Bible says …”He’s effective because, first, he walks the walk of his ownmessage, and secondly, because he meets people where they’reat, just like you do. He addresses their hungers for a betterworld, just like we can, all the while presenting his message asgood news, just like Jesus did. I’m convinced we can dolikewise.
Siempre adelante!
