My dear parish family,

The Church invites us, in the month of

November, to commemorate and pray for our relatives and friends who have died. Based on

our faith in the communion of the saints, we join holy mother Church to pray for those who

have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. At St. Lawrence, we shall celebrate a

special mass of remembrance on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 (All Souls’ Day) at 7pm. During

this Mass, we shall pray for all our deceased relatives and friends but in a special way, we shall invite you to light

a candle for your family member who died in the past year. Please note that the lighting of the candle is limited

only to immediate family members, that is, father, mother, brother, sister, son or daughter. If you lost a family

member (father, mother, brother, sister, son or daughter) and the funeral was not celebrated here at St.

Lawrence, please contact Lori Crocker at [email protected] to RSVP for that Mass and we’ll reserve a

candle for you.

In addition, we ask you to participate in the All Souls’ Novena of Masses for the Dead (November 3-11). If you’d

like to include the intentions of your deceased relatives and friends to the All Souls’ Novena, please fill out the

envelopes and return them to the parish office or put them in the offertory basket during Mass. Envelopes can be

found in the Narthex.

On October 22, we celebrate the memorial of Pope St. John Paul II. The witness of his life is a testimony to the

world that firm and enduring faith must always be grounded in holiness and prayer. He once remarked: You must

always muster …the will to follow an ideal, the refusal to allow yourselves to be ground down by mediocrity, the

courage to commit yourselves humbly and patiently to improving yourselves and society, making the world more

human and more fraternal." May his prayers and intercessions guide us as encounter the future with hope and

courage!

God bless you and see you at Mass!

Encounter Christ. Pastor’s Corner

Probablemente no seremos crucificados, torturados o decapitados mientras

defendemos nuestras creencias.

pasará factura a nuestros corazones y espíritus.

Servant Leadership Those who would place themselves first, who seek to become powerful and to use that power over others,

will be made last in the reign of God. Those who serve others in humility and kindness will be made first. The

cost of such service is high, requiring one to give his or her life for others. There is nothing more difficult to

witness than the suffering of an innocent person: The father trying vainly to protect his young son on a war-

torn street; the young mother whose life is cruelly shortened by the onslaught of cancer; the gunning down

of high school students by one of their peers as they hold hands in prayer. Such suffering appears senseless,

and while it is hard enough to hear of it, Jesus seems to be saying we must be open to it as well. Most of us,

in our attempts to live our faith, will not meet an end like many of the early disciples. We probably won’t be

crucified, tortured, or beheaded as we stand up for our beliefs. But what we are asked to do will still take its

toll on our hearts and spirits. Living out the Gospel could require us to care for a loved one with a long-term

illness, to enter in to a lengthy process of forgiveness, or to stretch ourselves to the point of exhaustion in

order to reach out to those in need. Surrounded as we are by a culture that champions our “rights”—to sue,

to blame, and to make ourselves victims—servant leadership can be an enormous challenge. But Jesus

himself leads the way. For those who try to follow him, however imperfectly, the image of his passion and

death is a continual reminder of the faithfulness and love that is a requisite part of discipleship. The examples

of the Twelve are also inspirational. Despite their like of understanding they went on to do great things in

humble ways. Their reward may have been much more than they ever dreamed possible. Such is our hope.

Share the Gospel.
