Stewardship As I write this, in my mind, I can hear the collective groan as people read the headline of this article, “Stewardship.” My canon law professor in seminary, Father Ron Bowers, told us on several different occasions that each year we just have to give “The

Money Homily,” that we cannot be squeamish about asking parishioners and reminding parishioners that part of being a member of the parish is to fund the needs of the parish through their contributions to the parish.

However, I would challenge the good Father Ron Bowers on the idea that stewardship is more than giving “the money homily.” Folks who have not spiritualized what stewardship is about, with all the rising expenses in life, especially in health insurance, the first thing that takes a hit is charitable donations and contributions to the Church. The idea of spiritualizing stewardship is giving God first fruits of what God has blessed us with. It is an attitude that says God gets my first ten percent, not Uncle Sam, not after I have paid all my other expenses, but the FIRST TEN PERCENT. This does not just speak to what we earn monetarily from our treasure, but also our time and our talent.

With stewardship. we speak about what it means to tithe. The ten percent figure goes back all the way to Abraham, when Abraham gave the priest Melchizedek ten percent of what he had in return for the blessings he received. Ten percent of our time means that we ponder how much we devoted our day to Godly things both in prayer and in doing God’s work. With that, our talent, our God given talent, we ponder how we can use that to best serve God and God’s people. In the Church, there are plenty of ministries for us to choose to satisfy that. In discerning this, we may discover hidden talents that we may not know we have. Take for example the liturgy. One may not know that there is a talent to sing unless one puts oneself out to join the choir. One may not know that they have a good speaking voice if they do not put themselves out to be a lector. One may not think they should serve at the altar or be an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist because one has deemed oneself not holy enough or too shy to risk embarrassment by making a mistake to put oneself out there. If we have the courage to put ourselves out there confident in our faith, even when we may a mistake, we serve the Lord. At Saint Pius, we will train anyone who may look to be an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, a lector, and an altar server, and those whoe may wish to have a refresher on those ministries Saturday, November 12.

Next weekend, the homily will focus on stewardship. It is not just “the money homily,” but is a focus on a way of life that expresses our trust in God’s providence.—TB

Vermillion School Receives Grant Money

St. John the Baptist Catholic School-Vermillion is happy to be a recent recipient of a Tuition Assistance Grant from the Catholic Community Foundation (CCF). This grant was made possible by many donors – past and present – whose belief in the power of endowment has allowed CCF to steward and grow endowment funds. These funds provide annual grants to our Catholic schools in order to make Catholic education accessible to more and more students. The Catholic Community Foundation, located in St. Paul, is the largest Catholic community foundation in the nation and is committed to supporting the spiritual, educational and social needs of our community. Catholic Charities Counseling Program has appointments readily available for adults, couples and families who are dealing with emotional turmoil, worry, stress, interpersonal conflict, anger, or life changes. We accept most health insurance providers and also have sliding fee/reduced fee plans available. Locations are in Saint Paul, Burnsville and Blaine. A Men’s Therapy Group meets every other Tuesday from 6-8 pm in Saint Paul. Call 651 647-3100.

Appalachia Christmas Semi The ACCW is again sponsoring the Appalachia Kentucky Christmas Semi to be held at the Hupf Farm. The semi will be at our farm from Thursday, October 27, through Thursday, November 10. As always we can only accept new items and the need is ever so great. I had the opportunity this fall to go to Kentucky and was so welcomed by the Priests, Sisters and Volunteers. They are so grateful for our people in Minnesota for all the wonderful things that are sent to them. We provide for all ages, infants through elderly. There is a letter and brochure in your church, but if you would like me to e-mail or send you a copy by mail,. please give me a call at 507-263-2705 or e-mail [email protected]. God Bless you and your family for all the generosity you have given to this Mission for all these years. Olive Hupf
