Dan & Melody G. from Cameroon:

“A couple of days ago, we pulled a truck out of the mud. It was interesting because I think it was the first time someone actually came to our house and called for me to help. It was a tomato truck. Heavy laden. In a big hole. So we went and worked for a bit and gave a bit of advice and then pulled it out. It was a group effort. Some people did some digging. Some pushed. I pulled. Some cheered. Some just watched and enjoyed the show. Who needs

Saturday morning cartoons when you can live in Bambalang!??

So today Anna and I went to a gravel pit and dug two loads of gravel, putting it in the back of our trusty Hilux pickup, and put it in the hole where someone else had already added some big rocks in the bottom. We were quite proud of the repair and, as long as one kept to the left, it was great!

Tonight about 8:00 someone else came. At first it sounded like they fell in a puddle and were all wet. Then they had fallen in a hole. Then their taxi was stuck in the hole. How could that be? We just fixed it! So off we went to "The Hole" … and lo and behold, there was another tomato truck, bigger than the last one, in deeper than the last one, stucker than the other one. He hadn't kept left. Oops. Not only was he in the hole, but he was blocking the whole road. So I went by him on the left, straddling the ditch, so I could pull him from the front.

He didn't budge. Someone dug. I pulled. He didn't budge. Someone dug more and pulled out a log in front of one of the tires. Someone pushed. I pulled. He didn't budge. We discussed and planned, and I loaded my truck with people to add weight. (The roads are covered in sticky clay with all the rain.) Some pushed again, some cheered. There were lots of people to watch the show. I pulled again. He budged an inch. In the meantime, there was a line of cars and smaller trucks and motorcycles wanting by so we helped them. When they got stuck trying to get around, I would pull them out. The ditch got deeper and slipperier and muckier. I failed. At least in pulling the truck out. As I sit here, that truck is still there, about an inch closer to Douala than it was three hours ago. Still blocking the road. Still stuck with ripe tomatoes getting riper. And so tomorrow we will try again. I suspect there will be a lot more digging. A lot more pushing and more pulling. But one thing I did do. I put on my brown socks. I haven't had to do that for quite a long time. This year as the roads have continued to deteriorate worse than has been usual the last decade or so, I haven't had to wear my brown socks. Tonight I put them on. You see the muck, which is a mixture of water and clay, stands out pretty good on my lily white legs. I wore the wrong shoes, and maybe it was just as well because when we wear our brown socks, it says something to people. It says, "We are together". "We are the same and we can help each other". When we enter the mud and muck of people's lives and work alongside and pull and push and cheer at successes and empathize with failure, it says "God loves you." After all, that's what Jesus did for us. He put on His brown socks, and He made Himself nothing and became just like us. And He lifted us out of the miry clay and put our feet on solid ground. I hope you get a chance to put on your own brown socks this week and share God's love with someone else stuck in the mud.”
