Jets up, down and inconsistent through 3-3 start (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press October 14, 2013

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/jets-down-inconsistent-3-3-232918919--nfl.html

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -- The New York Jets were looking like anything but a playoff contender.

Then, they pulled off an upset victory last Monday at Atlanta, and the postseason didn't seem so silly a notion. Now, after a disappointing loss to Pittsburgh, they're right back where they were.

And, this all came within the past week.

It has certainly been a roller-coaster season already for Geno Smith and the Jets, who are 3-3 and searching for some consistency.

''Obviously, we have to get better,'' coach Rex Ryan said, ''and that's where our focus is going to be.''

Are they more the team that couldn't get much going against Tennessee in a 38-10 loss two weeks ago and Pittsburgh in a 19-6 defeat on Sunday?

Or, are the Jets more the team that squeaked out that 30-28 stunner against the Falcons?

Perhaps, of course, they are somewhere in between all that.

Either way, Ryan and the Jets might get their answer soon as New York takes on three straight first-place teams, starting against New England on Sunday.

''I think we'll get a better sense this week,'' center Nick Mangold said. ''We've got a heck of a game coming up, a division game. We've got to put some work in to get better. We've already dropped one to them.''

That was a game they almost won, falling 13-10 in Week 2 at New England after Smith threw three fourth-quarter interceptions.

''I'm anxious to go out there and have another opportunity once again to try and get a victory for the organization,'' Smith said. ''I think every single guy felt bitter after that loss, on the road that Thursday night.

''But we've put it behind us and we've learned from it.''

After the Patriots (5-1), the Jets will play Cincinnati (4-2) and then come back home to take on New Orleans (5-1). For all those who downplayed New York's three wins by saying they came against teams that have combined for a 3-13 record - Tampa Bay (0-5), Buffalo (2-4) and Atlanta (1-4) - a few victories in the next three weeks could validate the suddenly soaring expectations from a week ago.

That's when Smith was coming off a turnover-free performance that included three touchdown passes and was later selected the AFC offensive player of the week. But, just like that, the good feelings were

tempered a few days later when Smith threw two interceptions against the previously winless Steelers, and the offense struggled to make big plays.

For the season, Smith has seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He has shown flashes of being a franchise quarterback, as well as a quarterback who is still very much a work in progress.

''Although I am a rookie, I don't tend to use that excuse as the reason behind me making those mistakes,'' Smith said. ''I think they're just simple mistakes in a game and they've got to be eliminated.''

Heading into Sunday, there was a chance that this week's matchup could be for first place in the AFC East, a remarkable possibility for a Jets team that many had picked to finish among the NFL's worst. But New York's listless loss was followed a few hours later by a comeback victory for Tom Brady and the Patriots.

Ryan was watching the game, and saw his twin brother Rob's pained look on New Orleans' sideline after Brady hit Kenbrell Thompkins for a winning 17-yard pass with 5 seconds left.

''It was a horrible day for the Ryan family,'' the Jets coach said. ''It's a good thing my Dad's out of coaching, I guess, that day. It was tough. I know (the Saints) are playing great. But, until it hits zero, Brady's done that time and time again.''

Rex Ryan has seen it firsthand, and he and the Jets haven't beaten Brady and the Patriots in the regular season since their first meeting in 2010. They're 0-6 since, other than a playoff win at New England in the 2010 season.

''I think 'must-win' might be a little much right now, even for my deal where I've been notorious for throwing those bad boys out,'' Ryan said with a smile. ''Here, it's Week 7. A lot of things can happen. You see that each week.''

A win, and the pendulum swings back up for the Jets.

A loss, and they're under .500 and 0-2 against the Patriots, who would also be three games up on the Jets not even halfway into the season.

''Certainly, that's huge,'' Ryan said. ''But again, for us, we have to get better, and that's what the practice field is about and then it's also about the opponent specifically. And, so, I think that's how you enter this week.''

Jets' Goodson out for year with torn ACL, MCL (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press October 14, 2013

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/jets-goodson-tweets-tore-knee-170818637--nfl.html

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -- Mike Goodson's season is over just as it was getting started.

The Jets running back tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee during New York's 19-6 loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Goodson broke the news himself on his Twitter page early Monday, and coach Rex Ryan confirmed the versatile back is out for the year.

''I think we all saw what we were so excited about, that type of explosiveness that that young man presents,'' Ryan said. ''It's an unfortunate thing, for sure.''

Goodson was hurt while trying to make a tackle on Lawrence Timmons' game-sealing interception of Geno Smith in the fourth quarter. Goodson's knee was hit by teammate Brian Winters on the play.

He had to be helped off the field, and an MRI exam Monday morning confirmed the damage.

''Not (too) happy right now,'' Goodson tweeted. ''But Everything Happens for a reason!''

It has been a rough few months for Goodson, who signed as a free agent in March and was playing in his second game since returning from a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

He was arrested in May in New Jersey on drugs and weapons charges, and then missed all of training camp for personal reasons that he declined to discuss in detail. Goodson was then suspended by the league after he returned to the team in late-August.

In two games, he ran for 61 yards on seven carries and caught two passes for 19 yards while showing he could be a pass-catching, change-of-pace back behind Bilal Powell and Chris Ivory.

Jets lose running back Mike Goodson with torn MCL, ACL (Kimberley Martin) Newsday October 14, 2013

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/jets-lose-running-back-mike-goodson-with-torn-mcl-acl-1.6255391

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Mike Goodson was beaming about his fresh start less than two weeks ago, describing how his time away from football had sharpened his resolve to bring a "spark" to the Jets' offense. And now his season is over.

The Jets running back announced the news of his torn MCL and ACL -- suffered in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 19-6 loss to the Steelers -- via his Twitter page Monday morning and Rex Ryan later confirmed Goodson is done for the year.

"Ugh, it's tough," Ryan said on ESPN Radio of losing Goodson, who was spotted in the facility on crutches. "This guy's a game-breaker. He has explosive speed. It's just unfortunate because we were excited about him."

Ryan acknowledged the Jets are in the market for a wide receiver or running back.

"I think we're in the market to look at anything that can help our team," he said. "With Goodson out, we'll need a playmaker . . . We'll certainly be looking."

Geno eager for rematch

Geno Smith continues to take his mistakes in stride and vows to learn from each one of his 10 interceptions. But the rookie quarterback is eager to get a "W" this time against the Patriots.

"I think every single guy felt bitter after that loss, on the road that Thursday night," Smith said, referring to their Week 2 defeat in Foxborough. "We played really well in the early parts of the game. And then pretty much the bottom fell out, those last 12 plays.

"We had three interceptions, which were on me and then we just didn't get a chance to get down in field-goal range or possibly score a touchdown."

Ryan joked Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski, who has yet to play this season, should sit out another week. "I checked on it, he definitely needs one more week," he said. "He absolutely needs one more week." . . . The Jets still are awaiting MRI results on Clyde Gates' injury, but Ryan said the receiver's left shoulder was "damaged" in Sunday's game. Gates said he hopes to play against New England . . . Ryan wouldn't say if CB Kyle Wilson suffered a concussion against the Steelers.

How good are the Jets? Pats first of three tough tests (Bob Glauber) Newsday October 14, 2013

http://www.newsday.com/sports/columnists/bob-glauber/how-good-are-the-jets-pats-first-of-three-tough-tests-1.6255498

It's Patriots Week, and Sheldon Richardson is ready. Especially after the Jets let the last one get away from them in that Week 2 game in Foxborough. The loss still bugs him.

"Ready to get after 'em again," the rookie defensive tackle said. "Came close that last time in Foxborough. Now we got 'em at MetLife, so we feel better that we have the home-field advantage. Happy about that."

There is no fear of the longstanding AFC East champions and three-time Super Bowl winners. No intimidation, either.

"Never. Never," he said.

Not concerned that they have a Hall of Fame quarterback in Tom Brady? "I don't care," Richardson said.

And a Hall of Fame coach in Bill Belichick? "I don't care."

And not even after their thrilling comeback win over the Saints on Sunday, when Brady threw the winning touchdown pass with five seconds left?

"Still don't care," Richardson shot back. "They can have a winning streak, and I wouldn't care. I don't fear records. I don't fear people. I go play football the way I know how. Glad to get another shot, because we feel like we left one out there. As far as being nervous or afraid of them, no, not at all. That's a negative."

Is revenge on the Jets' minds? Absolutely.

If they needed something to get their minds off a dispiriting 19-6 loss to the Steelers on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, there's no better pick-me-up than getting ready for the Patriots. Especially after they came so close in a 13-10 loss to New England that in some ways showed the rest of the country -- if not the Jets themselves -- that this season might amount to more than just a massive rebuilding project.

That the Jets were even in position to win last month's game against the Patriots was a testament to how well Rex Ryan got them ready during the summer, especially against the backdrop of withering criticism and relentless doubts from outside the locker room. And if not for rookie Geno Smith's three late interceptions, the Jets likely would have pulled off the upset.

The rematch can't get here fast enough, especially for Smith, who fizzled in Sunday's loss to the Steelers with two more interceptions six days after a breakout performance against the Falcons in Atlanta.

Page 6: October 15, 2013 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2013/10-october/... · 5 | P a g e Jet streams Ryan joked Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski,

"Every single guy felt bitter after the loss," Smith said of the Patriots game. "We've put it behind us and we've learned from that. We've gained experience and we're going to move on."

It was Smith's first taste of Jets-Patriots, and it was not a good one at the end, especially after he looked so poised heading into the final portion of the game. But the three late picks proved his undoing, and the Jets couldn't pull it off.

"We played pretty well in the early parts of the game, and then the bottom fell out on those last 12 plays," Smith said. "We had three interceptions, which were on me, and we just didn't get a chance to get down the field in field-goal range or possibly for a chance to score a touchdown."

Anxious for another shot? Absolutely.

But there will be more where that came from, because this is just the start of a brutal three-game stretch that will tell us a lot about what this team really is.

After New England, there is Cincinnati on the road and New Orleans at home before the Jets hit their bye week. Their next three opponents are a combined 14-4, and all three teams lead their divisions.

The Jets soon will find out if they're really overachievers -- one of the league's surprise teams in the first five weeks -- or if they're not quite ready to contend with the league's elite teams.

The Jets also will find out if they can beat a winning team; their three wins have come against teams with a combined record of 3-13.

Rex Ryan, who has lost five straight to the Patriots, is anxious to find out. But first things first.

"Not worried about the rest of the schedule," Ryan said. "Worried about the New England Patriots right now."

Judging from Ryan's failure to beat the Patriots in recent years, and judging by the way the Patriots are playing right now, there's a lot to worry about.

Same with the next week and the week after that.

Welcome to Patriots Week . . . and beyond. It ought to tell us all we need to know about the Jets.

Tom Brady tough on the Ryan brothers; Rex wants to change that (Kimberley Martin) Newsday October 14, 2013

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/jets-grades-offense-gets-an-f-after-taking-step-back-1.6249492

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - With one masterful throw, Tom Brady delivered a devastating blow to the entire Ryan clan.

When he fired a touchdown pass with five seconds left to beat New Orleans on Sunday, the Patriots quarterback not only outsmarted the defense of Saints coordinator Rob Ryan but dropped Rex Ryan's Jets two games behind New England in the AFC East.

Rex Ryan, still reeling from the Jets' 19-6 loss to the Steelers earlier in the day, couldn't believe what he had just seen on TV. But it was a familiar script nonetheless: Brady being Brady.

"Yeah, I saw it," the Jets' coach said Monday of the Patriots' 30-27 win over his brother's team. "It was a horrible day for the Ryan family. Good thing my dad's out of coaching."

Page 7: October 15, 2013 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2013/10-october/... · 5 | P a g e Jet streams Ryan joked Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski,

Even after 24 hours, the sting of the Jets' defeat lingered. Ryan spent the wee hours of Monday morning ruminating over the what-ifs that might have changed the outcome of the loss to Pittsburgh, but by the afternoon, he was peppered by questions about his emotional state during the Patriots' improbable win over the Saints.

"Heck yeah, you want to see them lose," he said. "No question you want every team in your division to lose. In particular New England, of course."

During his weekly spot on ESPN New York radio, Ryan said: "I felt terrible for my brother, but I definitely felt worse for us. I mean, that's the truth. That's what you think of first: how it affects you."

He stopped short of calling the Jets' Week 7 game against New England on Sunday a must-win, but with a 3-3 team that has been unable to string back-to-back wins together, Ryan said, "Certainly it's huge."

The Jets last defeated the Patriots in the 2010 playoffs. Since then, Ryan & Co. have dropped five in a row, including their 13-10 loss last month.

"Well, thanks, Negative Nancy," center Nick Mangold joked when reminded by a male reporter of how poorly the Jets have fared recently against New England. "You go out there and don't worry about what's happened in the past because things change."

Defeating the Patriots will take a total team effort, Ryan said. That apparently includes the fans at MetLife Stadium. The coach implored all of Jet Nation to party like it's 2009 -- the year the Jets topped New England, 16-9, in Week 2 with help from a raucous home crowd. Brady was forced into consecutive delay-of-game penalties in the third quarter, prompting Ryan to give game balls, typically reserved for players, to the fans.

"It was so loud," he recalled Monday. "Like I've never been in a stadium where it shook. And the floor was shaking. You make it like that, we're going to beat this team . . . Obviously, we have to earn that type of effort from our fans. I understand that. But I'm just telling our fans: Come ready to give that kind of effort. We love the support and we're going to do everything we can not to disappoint you."

Against Pittsburgh, two interceptions by Geno Smith and one miscue by Antonio Cromartie on the Steelers' touchdown doomed the Jets.

"They flat-out beat us," rookie defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson said.

Added Ryan: "I hate to lose . . . especially at home."

But he and his players have turned the page on the Steelers. On to the Patriots, and this time Ryan will attempt to carry out the one mission he and his brother have failed to complete this season: a win over Brady.

"Obviously, we haven't fared well the last several games against them the last three years," Ryan said. "We haven't beaten them. We've been close, but that doesn't matter . . . People will judge me however they're going to judge me. I know one thing: I'm going to keep competing. They'll get everything we have this week, and they know it."

Latest Jets talk takes turn for worse; RB Mike Goodson lost for season in tough loss (J.P. Pelzman) The Record October 14, 2013

http://www.northjersey.com/sports/Jets_RB_Mike_Goodson_says_hes_out_for_rest_of_season.html?page=all

FLORHAM PARK – A week ago today, the Jets were the talk of the NFL after their surprising victory over Atlanta in a Monday night game.

Seems like a long time ago, doesn’t it?

Since that exhilarating victory, the Jets have lost two key players to season-ending injuries and another one to an NFL-imposed four-game suspension. Oh yeah, and they followed up that signature win with a lackluster loss to previously winless Pittsburgh on Sunday.

To keep this so-far surprising season from continuing its sudden downward spiral, all the Jets must do is upset their archrivals in the AFC East on Sunday. New England will come to North Jersey off a miracle win over New Orleans on Tom Brady’s touchdown pass on the next-to-last play of the game.

It was a play that bedeviled not only New Orleans defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, whose unit gave it up, but was disappointing to his twin brother Rex, also. Had the Saints held on, New England would’ve been only one game ahead of the Jets in the division. Instead, the Patriots (5-1) have a two-game cushion on the third-place Jets and can put them three games behind with a win. Worse yet, a Patriots victory would give them a sweep of the season series and thus the tiebreaker advantage going forward.

Rex, whose team was held without a touchdown for the first time in 2013, called it “a horrible day for the Ryan family.”

But Ryan then added, “It’s more about us right now. You can’t be worried about somebody else. With that being said, heck, yeah you want to see [the Patriots] lose. No question you want every team in your division to lose, in particular New England, of course. For us, we’ve got to fix ourselves before we really worry about anybody else.”

There’s plenty to fix, especially on an inconsistent offense that continues to lose playmakers. Two days after tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was suspended by the league for taking performance-enhancing substances, running back Mike Goodson was lost for the season in the fourth quarter of the Pittsburgh game.

He suffered a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee while making the tackle on Geno Smith’s second interception of the game. He was hit by teammate Brian Winters.

“I think we all saw what we [were] so excited about, the type of explosiveness that young man [Goodson] presents,” said a frustrated Ryan, whose defense also lost pass-rushing specialist Antwan Barnes to a season-ending knee injury in the win over Atlanta.

Still, Ryan said, “I think ‘must-win’ might be a little much right now” in regards to the New England game, although he later added that the Patriots “will get everything we have this week and they know it.”

And after the Jets presumably empty the tank Sunday against New England, they will have to refill it quickly to take on two more division leaders in quick succession. They will face Cincinnati (AFC North) on the road and the Saints (NFC South) at home Nov. 3 prior to the Jets’ bye week.

“I’m not worried about the rest of the schedule,” defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson said. “I’m worried about the New England Patriots right now.”

BRIEFS: Wide receiver Clyde Gates had an MRI on his injured left shoulder. He said Monday afternoon that he didn’t know the results yet, but was hoping to play Sunday. … Ryan indicated during an interview

on ESPN Radio that the Jets need a “playmaker” because of their personnel losses, and might sign a wideout or a running back.

Jets report card: Week 6 vs. Steelers (J.P. Pelzman) The Record October 15, 2013

http://www.northjersey.com/sports/227769171_Jets_report_card__Week_6_vs__Steelers.html?page=all

Rushing offense: C

The Jets averaged 4.2 yards per carry, but that number was inflated by Mike Goodson's 18-yard run late in the fourth quarter when the Steelers were playing soft on defense. Until that play the hosts managed only 65 yards on the ground, and failed on a key third-and-goal situation in the first quarter when Bilal Powell was stuffed for no gain.

Passing offense: D

Geno Smith threw two interceptions that wrecked potential scoring drives, and he also overthrew an open Stephen Hill on what could have been a TD — or at least a long, momentum-changing play. The first pick was inexcusable, as he threw to reserve TE Konrad Reuland amid a crowd of Steelers. Smith was sacked three times and had plenty of trouble deciphering Pittsburgh's blitzes.

Rushing defense: A

Pittsburgh has struggled to run the ball all season and did so again versus a Jets defense that has been nearly impregnable against the rush. Le'Veon Bell had only 34 yards on 16 carries. The Steelers picked up only two first downs via the rush, and two of those occurred during the final quarter.

Passing defense: D

Ben Roethlisberger threw for 264 yards and a touchdown despite having almost no running game to help him, and he often targeted No. 1 CB Antonio Cromartie, who struggled three days after suffering a knee injury in practice. He allowed a 55-yard TD grab by a wide-open Emmanuel Sanders, and could have been beaten for another score had Antonio Brown held on to a ball he had in his grasp. Big Ben was sacked three times, but DE Muhammad Wilkerson couldn't wrap him up for what would've been a first-quarter safety.

Special teams: B-minus

Ryan Quigley had another good day, with a 40.1-yard net average on seven punts, and K Nick Folk connected on field goals of 25 and 39 yards to give him 13 straight makes in 2013. The return games were decent, especially that of Jeremy Kerley, who averaged 11.3 yards on four punt returns.

Coaching: C-minus

Coach Rex Ryan's defense couldn't scheme its way to Roethlisberger often enough, and when the Jets' defenders got there, he often escaped. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg lost the chess match to longtime Pittsburgh defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, whose calls rattled and confused Smith. Ryan chose not to go for it on fourth-and-1 from the Pittsburgh 2 early in the game and settled for a field goal. The call was debatable, but his desire to get the early lead in a defensive struggle was understandable.

STAR-LEDGER

Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith finds himself lacking offensive assets at critical point in season (Darryl Slater) Star-Ledger October 14, 2013

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2013/10/jets_rookie_quarterback_geno_smith_finds_himself_lacking_offensive_assets_at_critical_point_in_seaso.html

Mike Goodson’s production this season probably wasn’t going to define the Jets’ offense. Whether the Jets actually improve on that side of the ball largely hinges, of course, on the play of rookie quarterback Geno Smith, who has 10 interceptions and 13 turnovers in his first six games.

But Goodson, a running back who the Jets signed in the offseason, would have provided the burst and versatility as receiver that can put a young quarterback at ease, and keep defenses uneasy. With 3:43 left in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 19-6 loss to Pittsburgh, Goodson juked two defenders in the backfield and scurried for an 18-yard gain, to Pittsburgh’s 23.

Two plays later, Smith threw an interception to linebacker Lawrence Timmons. As Goodson dove to tackle Timmons on the return, 320-pound Jets left guard Brian Winters did the same. Winters collided with Goodson’s left leg as they went to the turf, tearing the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in Goodson’s knee. Like that, Goodson’s season was over.

Goodson was playing his second game after a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, which stemmed from his May arrest on drug and weapons possession charges. He was splitting carries with Bilal Powell and Chris Ivory. Goodson finished his truncated season with seven carries for 61 yards, and two catches for 19 yards.

“I think we all saw what we were so excited about, the type of explosiveness that young man presents,” said Jets coach Rex Ryan.

Goodson’s injury was the latest blow to the Jets’ offense, which ranks 20th in the NFL in yards per game (336.7) and 29th in points per game (17.3), after finishing 30th and 28th last year.

The Jets (3-3) enter Sunday’s home game against New England (5-1) trying to end a five-game losing streak against the Patriots, but having to do it without Goodson and tight end Kellen Winslow, who will serve the second of a four-game suspension for violating NFL policy on performance enhancing substances. The Jets also might not have their most talented wide receiver, Santonio Holmes, who has missed the past two games with a right hamstring injury.

“If we’re going to win games, it’s going to take all of us, not just a few of us,” said receiver Clyde Gates.

Still, this is far from the ideal situation for Smith.

“I think it makes it a little tougher on him, but it’s just part of the game,” said receiver Jeremy Kerley.

The Jets were counting on Goodson to add speed to their offense, something they lacked last season. That Smith won’t have him, and is dealing with offensive attrition, is simply “part of becoming a pro,” said Ryan.

The absence of Winslow and Goodson likely will lead to more opportunities for tight end Jeff Cumberland and Ivory, a power back for whom the Jets traded in the offseason.

In the first five games, Cumberland played 50 percent of the snaps. Sunday, he played 49 of 58 snaps and caught four passes for 59 yards. The past two weeks, he’s had the two most productive games of his

career. In the win at Atlanta, he caught three passes for 79 yards. Winslow’s absence “just gives me more opportunities maybe in the pass game,” said Cumberland.

With Smith perhaps missing three receiving targets on Sunday, depending on Holmes’ status, the Jets might have to lean more on their running game than they did Sunday, when they ran for a season-low 83 yards, albeit on a season-low 20 rushes. The Powell/Goodson/Ivory trio combined for just 17 runs, including four by Ivory, who believes his hamstring is healthy enough for him to contribute more. Ivory played just nine snaps against the Steelers. He got eight snaps and four carries in Atlanta, after returning from a one-game absence due to his hamstring.

“I think the workload will increase a little bit,” he said. “If you’re going to split time, you’re not going to get too many carries. I expect more than four, though. In my head, I’m just wondering what’s going on.”

Entering the game, Ivory figured he might not play much, due to the packages the Jets planned to use. Now that the Jets are without Goodson and have three tough opponents remaining before the off week (New England, Cincinnati, New Orleans), Ivory knows he could get more carries, as the Jets seek offensive assets to keep their season afloat.

“I think it’ll be a lot different this week, to be honest with you,” Ivory said. “Not just because of (Goodson’s) absence, but because of what (the coaches) want to accomplish now. Going in, we’re fixing to start running the ball. But we’ve been saying that. I feel like it’ll change this week.”

Rex Ryan's bad day gets worse watching Tom Brady carve his brother's defense (Michael J. Fensom) Star-Ledger October 14, 2013

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2013/10/rex_ryans_bad_day_gets_worse_watching_tom_brady_carve_his_brothers_defense.html

Rex Ryan stood on a sideline at MetLife Stadium Sunday afternoon watching his team get tossed aside by the Pittsburgh Steelers, who picked on the Jets for their first win of the season.

A couple hours later, Ryan agonized again -- now sitting in front of the television.

Tom Brady was conjuring another masterpiece, a New England Patriots charge through the New Orleans Saints defense. The drive covered 70 yards during the final 1:13 in Foxborough, Mass., and Rex’s brother Rob, coordinator of the Saints defense, seemed just as powerless as Rex to stop it. The result: A “horrible day for the Ryan family,” Rex said.

After Brady’s 17-yard touchdown toss to Kenbrell Thompkins with five seconds left, the camera panned to Rob with a tortured expression on his face.

“I don’t think it was as bad as my reaction,” Rex said today.

Ryan said he has sympathy for his brother’s predicament. On Thompkins’ touchdown, the Saints played four deep defenders in a zone and Thompkins leaped over Jabari Greer to snatch the ball in the end zone. Brady understood the defense’s vulnerability and delivered a pinpoint throw, which is why calling plays against him is so difficult.

“I’d put my chances with a Ryan over somebody else,” Rex said, adding that he sent his brother a consolation text message.

As with gameplanning against Brady -- a nemesis twice each season for the Jets -- Ryan has become accustomed with losing to the Patriots quarterback. Since the 2010 divisional round playoff victory for

the Jets in New England, the Patriots have claimed the last five meetings, including in Week 2 of this season, 13-10.

“We haven’t fared well the last several games against them, the last three years we haven’t beat them,” Ryan said. “I know we’ve been close, but that doesn’t matter. Like I’ve said before, we’re not betting the points spread.”

So aside from family ties, Ryan had an additional rooting interest in the Saints Sunday night. After the Jets fell to 3-3, a Saints win would have dropped the Patriots to 4-2. A share of first place in the AFC East would have been on the line Sunday.

“You want every team in your division to lose, in particular New England,” Ryan said. “For us, we have to fix ourselves before we worry about anybody else.”

Which is what the Jets say they are doing. Neither Geno Smith nor Sheldon Richardson watched the game. Nick Mangold said the game was on television at his home, but his concentration lay elsewhere.

"At that point, I was actually doing a Lego set with my nephews, so I wasn’t really paying attention to too much of it. I wasn’t emotionally attached,” Mangold said.

Instead he was “just focused in on making sure the (Lego) teeth were in the right spots.”

Geno, Jets look forward to 2nd chance against Patriots (Brian Costello) New York Post October 14, 2013

http://nypost.com/2013/10/14/geno-jets-look-forward-to-2nd-chance-against-patriots/

The last time Geno Smith threw a football against the Patriots it was intercepted … and so were two of his previous seven throws.

The Jets rookie quarterback had a rough night a month ago in a 13-10 Jets loss in New England. Now, he gets another shot at Bill Belichick’s crew when the Patriots come to MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

“Yeah, anxious to go out there and have another opportunity once again to go out there and try and get a victory for the organization,” Smith said Monday. “I think every single guy felt bitter after that loss, on the road that Thursday night. But, we’ve put it behind us and we’ve learned from it. We’ve gained experience from it and we’re going to move on.”

This will provide a test for the Jets to see exactly what type of team they are. Are they the team that went on the road last week and beat the Falcons or the one that laid an egg Sunday against the Steelers?

It also begins a three-game stretch in which the Jets will face first-place teams. They travel to Cincinnati to play the Bengals next week and then face the Saints at home. But the Jets are just worried about this week right now, and they know that they cannot afford to fall three games behind the Patriots in the AFC East.

“ In my opinion, it’s a must win,” running back Chris Ivory said. “They’re up two games on us. I feel like we have to win this game to be still in the running to win the division or at least tie it up. It’s a must win.”

Coach Rex Ryan would not go that far, but acknowledged this game is a big one.

Page 13: October 15, 2013 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2013/10-october/... · 5 | P a g e Jet streams Ryan joked Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski,

Daily Clips Cont.

13 | P a g e

“A must-win might be a little much right now even for my deal,” Ryan said. “Certainly it’s huge.”

Ryan has always believed division games count as 1 ½ games in the standings. The Jets have already dropped one of those to the Patriots.

The Week 2 game was a frustrating one for the Jets, who had one defensive letdown for a touchdown. They actually had Tom Brady visibly frustrated that night, but still could not pull off the win. The wheels fell off in a three-interception fourth quarter from Smith.

“I think we played pretty well, not to go back, but we played really well in the early parts of the game,” Smith said. “And then pretty much the bottom fell out, those last 12 plays. We had three interceptions, which were on me and then we just didn’t get a chance to get down in field-goal range or possibly score a touchdown.”

The Jets are coming off a tough 19-6 loss to the Steelers on Sunday. Smith threw another two interceptions in that game and has 10 this season, the third-most in the NFL.

“I don’t look at them as rookie mistakes, I just seem them as mistakes,” Smith said. “I think every quarterback in this league is going to make some of those mistakes and the key thing is to try and eliminate them, try to avoid those mistakes. Although I am a rookie, I don’t tend to use that excuse as the reason behind me making those mistakes. I think they’re just simple mistakes in a game and they’ve got to be eliminated.”

It has been a while since the Jets came out on the winning side against the Patriots. You have to go back all the way to the 2010 divisional playoff game. The Jets have dropped five straight since, and have been humiliated the last two times they have played New England at MetLife — last year’s Thanksgiving 49-19 debacle and 37-16 in 2011. They have had close games with them in Foxborough the last three times they’ve played.

“We haven’t fared well the last several games against them, the last three years we haven’t beat them,” Ryan said. “I know we’ve been close, but that doesn’t matter. Like I’ve said before, we’re not betting the point spread.”

Knee injury ends season for Jets RB Goodson (Brian Costello) New York Post October 14, 2013

http://nypost.com/2013/10/14/knee-injury-ends-season-for-jets-rb-goodson/

Mike Goodson’s first season as a Jet was a short one.

The speedy running back tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee late in Sunday’s loss to the Steelers and he is out for the remainder of the season. Goodson played just two games for the Jets after serving a four-game suspension, stemming from his May arrest, to start the season.

“I think we all saw what we were so excited about, the type of explosiveness that young man presents,” coach Rex Ryan said. “But then unfortunately he has the MCL and ACL knee injury. He’ll be out for the year on an interception. It’s an unfortunate thing for sure.”

The injury occurred in the fourth quarter on Geno Smith’s second interception of the day. Goodson actually gave up the pressure from Steelers linebacker Jarvis Jones. He went to tackle Lawrence Timmons after the Steelers linebacker intercepted Smith when teammate Brian Winters collided with Goodson’s leg.

Page 14: October 15, 2013 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2013/10-october/... · 5 | P a g e Jet streams Ryan joked Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski,

The Jets signed Goodson to a three-year, $6.9 million deal in March, hoping he would give them a playmaker in the backfield that was a big-play threat. He was arrested two months later after being found passed out in a car on Route 80 and faces weapons and drug charges from the incident. Goodson did not participate in training camp and the NFL suspended him for the Jets’ first four games.

Goodson’s absence should create a bigger role for Chris Ivory, who had just four carries Sunday. Ivory, who came to the Jets in a trade from New Orleans, said he is not frustrated by his limited role, but hopes the Jets will run more. Ivory has 115 yards on 34 carries this year.

“It hasn’t been tough yet,” Ivory said. “I don’t feel like I’m sitting back waiting on my time. I just feel like we could run the ball more. We’re not doing that, but I think it will get better.”

The Jets ran the ball nine times in the first quarter, but then just 11 times the rest of the game. Ivory said the game plan was to run the ball against a Pittsburgh defense that was 25th against the run.

“We definitely got away from it,” Ivory said. “As the [offensive coordinator], there’s no telling what he’s seeing and what he’s thinking. That’s just something you say OK and deal with and hope a big play happens.”

***

WR Clyde Gates said he was waiting for MRI exam results on his left shoulder, but was optimistic he would be able to play Sunday. … CB Kyle Wilson left Sunday’s game with a head injury, but Ryan would not say whether he has a concussion. … The Jets have just one interception on defense, tied for the lowest total in the league with the Chargers entering their game Monday night.

Rex hoping to avoid same fate as twin vs. Brady, Patriots (Steve Serby) New York Post October 14, 2013

http://nypost.com/2013/10/14/rex-hoping-to-avoid-same-fate-as-twin-vs-brady-patriots/

For the better part of 59 minutes, his hirsute twin brother had tormented Tom Brady, had him on the ropes, was already celebrating one of the most exhilarating triumphs of a nomadic career, was certain he was delivering a humbled and beaten quarterback and a first-place showdown, of all things, to Rex Ryan and the Jets.

And then Rob Ryan, defensive coordinator of the Saints, learned firsthand what Rex Ryan has come to understand: that you play 60 minutes against Tom Brady, or you do not live to tell about it.

Even if Aaron Hernandez rots in jail. Even if Rob Gronkowski still hasn’t played. Even if Wes Welker belongs to Peyton Manning and Danny Amendola is knocked from the game. Even if Brady has to negotiate 70 yards across the last 1:13 to be the hero. Even if he has to throw to receivers named Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson and Austin Collie and Julian Edelman.

And when Brady found Thompkins with that 17-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone with five seconds left for a 30-27 victory, Rex had lost to the Steelers and Rob had lost to the Patriots and there would be no Patriots-Jets first-place showdown Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

“It was a horrible day for the Ryan family,” Rex said Monday. “Good thing my dad’s out of coaching that day.”

Rex saw his brother sag in shock and disbelief. The whole country saw a man who looked as if he had just learned he had been audited by the IRS.

Page 15: October 15, 2013 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2013/10-october/... · 5 | P a g e Jet streams Ryan joked Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski,

Daily Clips Cont.

15 | P a g e

“I don’t think it was as bad as my reaction,” Rex said.

And now Brady goes for the twin killing.

“Until it hits zero, Brady’s done that time and time again,” Rex said.

So with his team 3-3 and two games behind the Patriots, Rex vows to fight to uphold the family name and keep alive his team’s improbable dream against his mortal enemies, Brady and Bill Belichick. Who have made a living turning everyone’s thrill of victory into the agony of defeat.

Rex watched in horror as déjà vu all over again unfolded, and coached along with his brother every step of the way at the bitter end.

“You want to make calls for your brother if you think you can help, but they’d been doing a pretty good job of their own anyway,” Rex said. “And I know what he went to, he went to a four-across, he had four guys on top, and that’s a tough situation right there. ’Cause you can’t double ’em all. He got what he wanted, and so did they. They got a jump ball out there, and you know what’s coming. Everybody in the park knows it’s coming. You just don’t know which receiver it’s going to.”

Go ahead and second-guess the strategy all you want.

“I put my chances with a Ryan over somebody else,” Rex said.

Rex was asked if he spoke to Rob after the nightmare ending.

“Yeah, we texted back and forth a few times,” he said.

Did you try to cheer him up?

“Yeah, of course,” Rex said. “That’s what you do.”

In one of his more memorable triumphs, Rex upset Brady in the 2010 playoffs in Foxborough and frustrated him (19-for-39, 185 yards, 1 touchdown, no interceptions) last month in Foxborough in a 13-10 loss.

But Brady has toyed with Rex and the Jets the last two times he has visited MetLife Stadium. You may recall an event forever known as the buttfumble. It happened in the course of Patriots 49, Jets 19. Brady was 18-of-27 for 323 yards and 3 touchdowns that night. A year earlier, it was Patriots 37, Jets 16. Brady was 26-of-39 for 329 yards and three touchdowns. That makes him 44-of-66 for 652 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions the last two times in Rex’s house.

“I’m just telling our fans, ‘Come ready,’ ” Rex said on ESPN Radio.

I asked Rex if there are any tips his brother could give him about defending Brady he doesn’t already know.

“I played against him more than he has,” Rex said. “… Trust me, if there’s any tip by now, he’s given me everything.

“But will I check with him again? Of course. Absolutely.”

Must Twin.

Only two games after Mike Goodson’s season began, it’s over. Goodson, the Jets’ running back who was suspended for the first four games of the year, Tweeted Monday that he tore his ACL and MCL. Goodson was injured late in the fourth quarter on the play that sealed the Jets fate in their 19-6 -- Geno Smith’s second interception.

The injury will end the season for Goodson, who had looked good in his two games, providing a speed burst in an offense lacking in skill position talent.

The Daily News first reported Monday that Goodson was scheduled for an MRI on Monday and that a torn ACL was feared.

Goodson rushed four times for 29 yards in Sunday’s loss. He finished with seven carries for 61 yards on the season. Goodson was also expected to contribute in special teams -- he lined up as a kick returner Sunday but did not have a return.

The running back was arrested in May on weapons and drug charges, resulting in a four-game suspension from the league.

If Rex Ryan wants to remain NY Jets head coach, beating Patriots a big step forward (Gary Myers) New York Daily News October 14, 2013

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/myers-rival-patriots-jets-hurdle-article-1.1485745

Rex Ryan has lost five straight to Bill Belichick since the Jets eliminated the Patriots in the 2010 divisional round of the playoffs in the second-greatest victory in team history.

Back then, Jets Nation would have been thrilled if Woody Johnson had signed up Ryan as coach for life. Only a Super Bowl victory could be better than ending Belichick’s season in a playoff game in Foxborough.

Less than three years later, Ryan is fighting to save his job.

He’s just 17-21 since that glorious night in New England and he’s lost his way trying to beat Belichick. The Butt Fumble humiliation last Thanksgiving Night against the Patriots — it was 49-19 and not that close — was among the lowest moments in Jets history.

Will Ryan be back in 2014?

Even with the Jets overachieving at 3-3 in what looked like it could be a 4-12 season back in August, it’s too soon to say. It looks better than it did two months ago, but the 2013 sample size is still too small.

Ryan’s situation is a work in progress, but each victory inches him closer to an extension — either one-year or long-term — and beating the hated Patriots on Sunday should be worth double based on degree of difficulty as Johnson and GM John Idzik keep score on Rex.

I don’t think Ryan needs to make the playoffs to be asked back. Remember, Johnson is extremely fond of Ryan, who made the Jets relevant again when Johnson couldn’t wait to fire Eric Mangini after the collapse of 2008.

If Ryan has the Jets playing well at the end of the season and Geno Smith has established himself at the quarterback with the guidance of offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and quarterbacks coach

Page 17: October 15, 2013 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2013/10-october/... · 5 | P a g e Jet streams Ryan joked Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski,

David Lee, then it would be counterproductive for Johnson/Idzik to start over with a new coaching staff and it would be detrimental to Smith’s development.

Smith is crucial to Ryan’s future, just as Mark Sanchez was for the last four years. It’s not often a coach gets a shot to make it work with a second rookie quarterback. In effect, Ryan is getting a do-over. He often said he wanted Sanchez to be his quarterback as long as he was the Jets’ coach. If Ryan gets fired after this season, he won’t be off by much.

Ryan and Idzik are an odd couple despite growing up in football families with fathers who were Jets assistant coaches, although not at the same time. In a self-preservation move, Ryan has dialed down the bluster to conform with the corporate Idzik. He still has his fire with the team — that’s the most important thing — but publicly he’s not the same guy.

So far, it’s working.

Rob Ryan, the Saints’ defensive coordinator, didn’t do his twin brother any favors when New Orleans allowed Tom Brady to throw a game-winning 17-yard touchdown pass on Sunday with five seconds remaining, which pushed the Jets two games back of New England going into this Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.

Rob was devastated when they showed him on the sideline after Brady’s touchdown pass. “I don’t think it was as bad as my reaction,” Rex said Monday. “You want every team in your division to lose, in particular New England, of course.”

Despite the Jets’ deflating loss Sunday to the previously winless Steelers, which prevents them from playing for a share of first place this weekend, the reviews on Ryan have been good as the season gets close to the halfway point.

The Jets are playing hard; they’ve been competitive in all but the loss in Tennessee when Smith forgot to take care of the football; Ryan has developed a dominant pass rush; and, he and Idzik seem to be getting along fine.

“Obviously, I love playing for Rex and I think it’s the nature of the business that there is always speculation,” center Nick Mangold said. “It is what it is. If you start worrying about it, you are going to lose sight of what’s important and what’s important is focusing on the week of practice and preparation.”

When a new GM is forced to retain the incumbent coach, it can work out long-term — Jerry Reese and Tom Coughlin have won two Super Bowls together with the Giants — or it can simply delay the inevitable firing.

Ryan’s situation won’t likely be clarified until December. His contract runs through 2014, which means Johnson will have to make a decision on Ryan, surely with major input from Idzik, no later than a couple of days after the season is over.

Coaches rarely go into the final year of their contract unless the owner simply refuses to pay him to leave, in which case it becomes a wasted year with a lame duck coach. That’s what happened with John Fox in Carolina in 2010.

The Jets will keep themselves alive, at the very least in the wild-card race, if they can end the losing streak against the Patriots.

“Obviously we haven’t fared well the last several games against them, the last three years,” Ryan said. “We haven’t beat them. I know we’ve been close, but that doesn’t matter. ... But I know one thing, I’m going to keep competing, and they’ll get everything we have and they know it.”

If Ryan can beat Belichick on Sunday, it’s a big step towards getting another couple of shots at him next season.

Rex Ryan reacts to brother Rob Ryan unable to stop Tom Brady and Patriots (Seth Walder) New York Daily News October 14, 2013

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/brothers-grim-ryans-rough-day-article-1.1485725

Even when the Patriots aren’t playing the Jets, they still find a way to torture Rex Ryan.

Hours after losing his own game, Ryan was calling defensive plays again, this time in his mind for the Saints, hoping they would be able to hold off Tom Brady. His brother, Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, was calling the plays in real life, but was unable to prevent a terrific comeback by the Patriots. Brady threw a game-winning touchdown to Kenbrell Thompkins to put the Patriots ahead with five seconds in a 30-27 victory.

The Saints’ loss was like two punches in the gut for Rex Ryan. A win for a divisional opponent, and a loss for his brother.

“That was a horrible day for the Ryan family,” Rex Ryan said, referring also to his team’s 19-6 loss to the dismal Steelers.

“Heck yeah, you want to see them lose,” Ryan said. “You want every team in your division to lose, in particular New England, of course.”

But which hurt Rex Ryan more, the divisional opponent win or his brother’s loss?

“I felt terrible for my brother, but definitely felt worse for us,” Ryan said on ESPN Radio. “That’s the truth, there’s no question that’s the truth.”

The infamous Rob Ryan had a disgusted look on his face after the Thompkins touchdown. Rex Ryan said his own reaction was worse than his twin brother’s.

Next week if the Patriots win, the cameras will be trained on Rex Ryan. New England comes to town to take on the 3-3 Jets Sunday, a game that Gang Green could use badly after its loss to the Steelers and especially considering the loss in Week 2 to the Patriots in a winnable game.

“Well, I think must-win might be a little much even for (me). (Even when) I’ve been notorious for throwing those bad boys out. Here it’s Week 7,” Ryan said, though he added that if the Jets were to lose, “the tiebreakers are out the window and all that. So certainly that’s huge.”

The Jets have lost five in a row to the Patriots now, a fact that prompted Nick Mangold to call a reporter a “Negative Nancy” for bringing it up. The last time Gang Green beat the Pats was in the 2010 playoffs in New England.

Ryan said any disconnects Brady has had with his receivers aren’t too big of an issue for them. Ryan also, on ESPN Radio, jokingly urged Rob Gronkowski to rehab for another week just to be safe.

“What’s their record? 5-1 or something like that. I think he’s pretty good,” Ryan said of Brady. “He looks pretty good to me, always has.”

But perhaps Rob Ryan, fresh off his own loss, has a secret to share on stopping Brady, especially since he was New England’s linebackers coach from 2000-2003? Rex Ryan wasn’t buying that.

Chris Ivory says NY Jets need to run ball more despite Mike Goodson out for year (Manish Mehta) New York Daily News October 14, 2013

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/jets-insider-goodson-ivory-miffed-article-1.1485723

Mike Goodson’s season-ending knee injury may have eliminated one of the Jets’ backfield threats, but Chris Ivory believes that the Jets need to make a greater commitment to the run moving forward.

“I would like to see us to run the ball more,” Ivory told the Daily News on Monday. “I really feel like when you can run the ball, that opens up everything else. It would take a little (pressure) off Geno.”

“Going (forward), we have to run the ball,” Ivory added. “I feel like it’s a must.”

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, of course, believes that points are generated through the passing game. The Jets have a 53-47 pass-run split through the first six games, but a 51-49 run-pass breakdown in their three wins.

The numbers support Ivory’s take. Rex Ryan’s team is 2-0 when they’ve had more runs than passes In the Jets’ three losses, the Jets have a 58-42 pass-run split.

“We run the ball,” Ivory said. “I just don't feel like it’s consistent…. Rex wants to run the ball, but I guess as the O.C. you see something different out there… I think he’s just a passing guy. The offense he runs is built for passing.”

Ivory, who was acquired in a draft-day trade from the Saints, has just 34 carries (for 115 yards) in five games. He’s had four carries in each of his last three games. Ivory should have a larger role since Goodson tore his ACL and MCL trying to make a tackle after an interception late in Sunday’s loss to the Steelers.

EXCUSE NO. 2

Geno Smith clarified Monday that the reason he threw the ball away in bounds on his first interception was in an attempt to avoid drawing an intentional grounding penalty. Instead, it was picked off by Ryan Clark.

PICKED OFF

The Jets have just one INT this season, a fact that has surprised Ryan.

“Am I shocked that we have one interception all year? Yeah,” Ryan said. “I’d be shocked if we

To Catch Patriots, Jets Focus on Pass Coverage (Ben Shpigel) New York Times October 14, 2013

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/15/sports/football/to-catch-patriots-jets-focus-on-pass-coverage.html?_r=0

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Nick Mangold fiddled with a Lego set on Sunday night, while 225 miles to the northeast, Tom Brady fiddled with the Saints’ defense. As Mangold played with his nephew, a television showed New England’s winning drive, which culminated in a touchdown pass by Brady with 5 seconds remaining. No, Mangold did not smash the Legos or fling them across the room.

“That wouldn’t go over too well with a 5-year-old,” Mangold said.

Nothing about Sunday went over too well with a certain team residing at One Jets Drive. Not the Jets’ 19-6 loss to Pittsburgh, which exposed deficiencies in their pass defense and an absence of continuity in their offense. And not the Patriots’ 30-27 victory against New Orleans, for reasons that extended far beyond Coach Rex Ryan’s empathy for his twin, Rob, the Saints’ defensive coordinator.

The stakes for New England’s approaching visit to MetLife Stadium on Sunday have been reset. Instead of pursuing A.F.C. East supremacy, the Jets (3-3) now must try to avoid falling three games behind the Patriots (5-1).

“You can’t be worried about somebody else,” Rex Ryan said. “With that being said, heck yeah, you want them to lose. You want every team in your division to lose. In particular, New England, of course. For us, we’ve got to fix ourselves before we really worry about anybody else.”

That is probably a shrewd approach. For one thing, the Jets’ schedule ahead is daunting: three consecutive games against division leaders — New England, at Cincinnati, New Orleans — before the bye week. For another, the Patriots require the Jets’ full attention, having won five straight times, by an average of 13.2 points. For another, there were too many corrections to discuss, problems that if left unfixed will no doubt be exploited by New England.

Among the items on Monday’s agenda was revisiting coverages. Ben Roethlisberger became the latest quarterback to torch a pass defense that for three straight weeks has yielded a big play, but mostly lots and lots of short completions.

Jake Locker shredded the Jets at Tennessee. Matt Ryan victimized them at Atlanta. It was Roethlisberger’s turn Sunday. Over the last three weeks, opponents have completed 75.2 percent of their passes for 847 yards, 7 touchdowns and no interceptions. Some not-so-quick math, and that is a passer rating of 118.6.

Those short completions — screens and flares and checkdowns — satisfy teams’ demands for faster-developing plays, the surest way to offset the Jets’ pass rush.

“If teams are going to do that,” Ryan said, “then you’ve just got to come up and make tackles most of the time.”

The absence of interceptions troubles Ryan, who said he expected a minimum of one a game. The Jets have picked off one pass all season, and that came in the second quarter of Week 1. A prime opportunity came against Atlanta, but Darrin Walls dropped it. There were none Sunday; Roethlisberger misfired on just seven passes.

The Jets’ minus-11 turnover margin through Sunday was the third worst in the league, behind only Houston (minus 12) and their co-tenants at MetLife Stadium, the Giants (minus 16). They did not force any on Sunday, or on Sept. 12, when they lost, 13-10, at New England, a defeat that still gnaws at the Jets.

This is what they did that night: they held the Patriots scoreless for the final 35 minutes 5 seconds, allowed just nine first downs and limited Brady to a 48.7 completion percentage, his lowest in nearly four years.

“We left one hanging,” defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson said Monday.

The Jets lost that game, at bottom, because of three interceptions by Geno Smith within 12 plays in the fourth quarter. He threw two more Sunday, both in the red zone, running his season total to 10, the most in the A.F.C. through Sunday.

Smith sputtered Sunday without Santonio Holmes (hamstring) and his top receiver, Kellen Winslow (suspension), and he will face New England without the speedy running back Mike Goodson, who had been evolving into a dangerous threat before tearing the anterior and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee. Smith said that he would miss them but that he was eager to play with the receivers and backs who are available.

Sort of like what Brady has done this season, with a diluted supporting cast. His winning touchdown against New Orleans was caught by an undrafted free agent, Kenbrell Thompkins. Asked if Brady looks more in sync with his receivers than he did earlier, Ryan responded with a rhetorical question.

“What’s their record, 5-1 or something like that?” Ryan said. “I think he’s pretty good. He looks pretty good to me. Always has.”

EXTRA POINTS

Clyde Gates awaited the results of magnetic resonance imaging of his left shoulder but was hopeful he could play Sunday.

Cromartie Is Suddenly the Jets' Weak Link on Defense (Stu Woo) Wall Street Journal October 14, 2013

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304330904579135832413346054.html?KEYWORDS=%22jets%22

FLORHAM PARK, N.J.—While the Jets' offense has been erratic in the team's 3-3 start to the season, the defense has been generally dependable, even in defeat.

"We didn't make as many mistakes as we thought," defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson said Monday after reviewing film of Sunday's 19-6 loss to Pittsburgh. "Somebody just got beat."

That somebody was Antonio Cromartie. The Jets' defense might be the league's finest if he didn't give up a deep pass or two every week.

Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, left, has struggled in coverage this season.

Cromartie, 29, became the leader of the Jets' secondary after the team traded Darrelle Revis to Tampa Bay during the off-season. At practice, he has given younger players pointers during drills. In games, he's been known to shadow and shut down the opponents' best receivers.

So it's startling that the two-time Pro-Bowl selection has been the crack in an otherwise impervious defense this season. The Jets are allowing 304 yards a game, the fourth-best mark in the NFL, and they've been especially good at stopping the run, yielding just 76 rushing yards a game.

Page 22: October 15, 2013 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2013/10-october/... · 5 | P a g e Jet streams Ryan joked Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski,

22 | P a g e

Their weakness is when Cromartie guards against a long pass. In each of the past three games, he has surrendered the longest reception for the opposing team, all for at least 46 yards.

The cornerback has been hindered all season by a hip injury sustained in training camp. And at practice last Friday, his left knee buckled when he tried to change directions during a goal-line drill. But he played Sunday and insisted he was healthy, even after giving up a 55-yard touchdown to Pittsburgh's Emmanuel Sanders. "The knee didn't impact anything at all," he said.

So what's wrong with Cromartie, if not his health? Former Jets linebacker Bart Scott, now an analyst for CBS Sports Network, said Cromartie simply has harder assignments without Revis, who also missed most of last year with an injury, to complement him. "He's making mistakes because he's going against the best person on the other team," Scott said. "From time to time, you're going to have lapses."

In reviewing the longest pass that Cromartie has surrendered in each of the past three games, the problem seems to be his technique and, in one case, a superbly talented receiver.

In the fourth quarter of the Jets' 38-13 loss in Tennessee on Sept. 29, Titans receiver Nate Washington streaked by Cromartie, who had been backpedaling and was slow to turn his hips to follow Washington downfield. He was one step behind Washington when the ball arrived, but he didn't realize that Washington had slowed down to jump for the underthrown pass. When Cromartie jumped for it, he slammed his right shoulder into Washington's left shoulder and bounced to the turf.

"Cro had just as a good of a shot as the receiver had," coach Rex Ryan said Monday. "It's unfortunate. The receiver played the ball well."

Cromartie was less at fault the following week, when Atlanta's Julio Jones hauled in a 46-yard catch down the left sideline late in the fourth quarter. Cromartie had matched Jones stride for stride, but Jones used his bigger body to shield the ball.

Against Pittsburgh on Sunday, he made the same mistake that he made in Tennessee. After Sanders ran toward the end zone's right pylon, he suddenly cut back toward the middle of the field. Cromartie had been backpedaling to face the receiver. "I stayed square too long," he said. "I wasn't able to flip my hips fast enough to get back up the field, so I just got beat inside."

In all three situations, Cromartie was guarding the receiver one-on-one. Ryan acknowledged he has put Cromartie in those tough situations, but has no plans to change that strategy yet. "We're not going to back off defensively," he said.

Rex Ryan: Always want Pats to lose (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York October 14, 2013

http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/9826172/rex-ryan-new-york-jets-says-was-horrible-seeing-tom-brady-top-brother-rob-ryan

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Tom Brady wounded two Ryans with one dagger Sunday.

"It was a horrible day for the Ryan family," New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said Monday, reflecting on the New England Patriots' last-second victory over the New Orleans Saints. "It's a good thing my dad is out of coaching. It was tough."

Page 23: October 15, 2013 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2013/10-october/... · 5 | P a g e Jet streams Ryan joked Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski,

Ryan felt bad for his brother, Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who looked like he was going to be sick on the sideline after Brady's touchdown pass lifted the Patriots to a 30-27 win. About 250 miles away, watching on TV in New Jersey, the Jets' coach felt worse for himself and his team.

A New England loss would have set up a first-place battle Sunday between the Jets (3-3) and Patriots (5-1) at MetLife Stadium. Now the Jets, coming off a 19-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, are two games behind.

Even when they're not in the same stadium, Rex Ryan gets haunted by Brady.

"Heck, yeah, you want to see them lose, no question," Ryan said, adding that his immediate reaction was more animated than that of his brother. "You want every team in your division to lose, in particular New England."

Ryan stopped short of calling Sunday's showdown a must-win. The Old Rex would have hyped it as a playoff-type game or would have made it all about him versus Bill Belichick, but Ryan doesn't do brash anymore.

"'Must-win' might be a little much right now, even for my deal," he said, mocking his old ways. "I'm notorious for throwing those bad boys out."

But Ryan acknowledged it's a "huge" game. There was a definite sense of urgency in the locker room. The Jets have dropped five straight to the Patriots, and they realize a sixth consecutive loss would cripple their chances in the AFC East.

"To me, it's a must," running back Chris Ivory said.

The Jets missed a great chance in Week 2, falling 13-10 in a Thursday night game. A frustrated Brady suffered one of the worst statistical days of his career, but the Jets imploded with three fourth-quarter interceptions by rookie quarterback Geno Smith.

From the Jets' perspective, there's unfinished business.

"We should've won that game," Ivory said.

Rookie defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson said, "We left one hanging."

The Ryan-coached Jets are 3-7 against the Patriots. The Jets' last win came in the 2010 divisional playoffs, arguably the franchise's most important victory since Super Bowl III in 1969.

Since January 2011, Brady has owned the Jets, winning the close ones (two games decided by a field goal) and winning by blowout (a 30-point win last Thanksgiving).

For most of Sunday evening, Ryan took pleasure in seeing his brother's defense frustrate Brady. The Saints sacked him five times and held him to a 74.7 passer rating. Then came the final drive, culminating with Brady's 17-yard scoring pass to Kenbrell Thompkins with five seconds left.

Rob Ryan fumed.

Rex Ryan fumed more.

"I don't think [his] was as bad as my reaction," Rex Ryan said.

He took umbrage with critics who second-guessed his brother's defensive strategy at the end of the game. Ryan didn't name names, but he was clearly miffed.

After-the-fact criticism "is the only insight you're going to get from the so-called experts that I've seen get crushed by [Brady]," he said. "Now they're going to make that call? Yeah, right. I'd put my chances with a Ryan over somebody else."

On Sunday, Ryan gets to defend the family honor.

Mike Goodson's season over (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York October 14, 2013

http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/9824130/mike-goodson-new-york-jets-tweets-torn-acl-mcl

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Mike Goodson's season ended only two weeks after it began.

The New York Jets confirmed Monday that the running back tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee in the team's 19-6 loss Sunday to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Goodson, suspended the first four games for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, was injured in the fourth quarter while trying to tackle Lawrence Timmons on an interception return. As he attempted to wrap up Timmons, Goodson was sideswiped by guard Brian Winters, who dived into the linebacker and inadvertently crashed into his teammate's knee.

The veteran running back said he was in considerable pain after the game, as the team immediately feared it was a season-ending injury. An MRI Monday morning confirmed it.

"We all saw what we were so excited about, the type of explosiveness that young man presents," coach Rex Ryan said. "It's an unfortunate thing for sure."

It was the latest in a string of setbacks for Goodson, who signed with the Jets in the offseason as a free agent. He was arrested in May on drug and weapons charges, didn't attend training camp as he received treatment for substance abuse and sat out the first month with his suspension.

Goodson's charges are still pending. The case was sent to a Morris County (N.J.) grand jury in June. It's in the pre-indictment stage, with the grand jury expected to release its findings by the end of the month.

This is a blow to the Jets because Goodson was starting to emerge as a key contributor. They will miss his speed, especially. In two games, he averaged 8.7 yards per rush -- 61 yards on seven attempts.

The Jets (3-3) still have three backs, Bilal Powell, Chris Ivory and Alex Green, but they had plans for Goodson as the third-down back and as an integral part of their Wildcat package. They might consider bringing in another veteran. The logical candidate would be Joe McKnight, whom they released in the preseason.

McKnight also is a kickoff returner, and the Jets might need someone to fill that role because Clyde Gates suffered a shoulder injury Sunday.

"It's a tough loss, for one, because he was definitely a big contributor to our offense," Ivory said. "I know Marty [Mornhinweg] and them wanted to do a lot of things with him, with him and Bilal, change-of-pace guys. It'll probably change up some things. Going forward, we'll see how the game plan goes."

Ivory, who has rushed only 34 times, admitted he's surprised he hasn't carried the ball more often. Asked if he's unhappy with his role, Ivory said, "I'm happy. I'm fine. I say that because we've got a lot of ball left. But if it's close to the end of the season and it's still the same, I can say I wouldn't be too happy."

The Jets signed Goodson, 26, to a three-year, $6.9 million contract in March. It included a $1 million signing bonus, but they renegotiated the deal after his suspension was handed down.

David Garrard plans to stick with Jets second time around (Kristian Dyer) Metro New York October 14, 2013

http://www.metro.us/newyork/sports/nfl/2013/10/14/david-garrard-plans-to-stick-with-jets-second-time-around/

This time next week, David Garrard expects to be a member of the Jets following a week of practice and no signs of a nagging knee injury. He said he is the healthiest he’s felt since 2010.

Garrard was brought back by the Jets last Wednesday just a day after the team announced quarterback Mark Sanchez had undergone season-ending shoulder surgery. Originally signed by the Jets in the offseason, Garrard had to retire in May due to lingering issues with his knee. Now he is back and on the exempt list, practicing with the scout team and feeling like his old self.

“Almost a full week and I feel great. Nothing has indicated that the knee is going to swell back up — dry as a bone,” Garrard told Metro. “When you have surgery things never quite get back to what you were born with, but it feels great, great enough to come out of retirement and great enough to be here.”

The decision by Garrard to retire on May 15 was due to a knee injury that has kept him off the field since 2010. He had a brief comeback with the Dolphins during preseason in 2012 but failed to make the team.

A source told Metro in May that Garrard was struggling with offseason workouts and had difficulty making his throws due to the injury.

“It was a lot of things. It would swell up so much that I couldn’t go out there at times. But when I did go out there and work on turf, that would flare it up,” Garrard said. “When I was on grass, it was pretty good but even a few days on grass it would aggravate. It was keeping me out way too much. It never healed to the point where it felt great. Now it feels good.”

Garrard is throwing roughly 30 balls a day to the younger players following practice. He thinks this time next week — when the Jets need to make a decision on whether to keep him or release him — that he will officially be in Jets green.

“All the feedback I’ve been getting is great. I anticipate being here but I’m not the one making the calls,” Garrard said. “As long as the knee doesn’t act up again I would have to figure they would want me to stay because they brought me here for that reason. If I look good running around then I would see no reason why they wouldn’t keep me.”

A struggling Jets offense got worse on Monday morning with the news that running back Mike Goodson is out for the season with a torn ACL and MCL.

Goodson returned to the Jets last week after he spent the first four games of the season suspended for this past summer’s arrest on drugs and weapons charges. Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh was his second game back.

His absence is a crippling blow to a ground game that struggled in a 19-6 loss to the Steelers. The running backs accounted for just 75 rushing yards. Goodson had four carries for 29 yards before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with the injury.

Goodson announced the news on Twitter, writing, “MRI Shows that I Tore My MCL and ACL yesterday?….. Not to happy right now But Everything Happens for a reason!”

Head coach Rex Ryan confirmed he is out for the season.

“I think we all saw what we were so excited about, the kind of explosiveness that young man possesses,” Ryan said.

Goodson’s injury comes at a time when the Jets need to establish the ground game, especially after fellow running back Bilal Powell injured his shoulder against the Steelers.

Despite the rough game game against the Steelers, the Jets are still in the top half in the league with the No. 11 rushing offense.

Speculation has linked the Jets to interest in Joe McKnight, who was cut by the team at the tail end of preseason. He signed with the Packers but was also cut. A source close to the team tells Metro that the Jets haven’t reached out to McKnight at this juncture and called such interest “probably a bit unlikely given some off the field concerns.”

CBS NEW YORK

Dyer: Jets Finally With A Homefield Advantage? They’re Getting There (Kristian Dyer) Metro New York October 14, 2013

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/10/14/dyer-jets-finally-with-a-homefield-advantage-theyre-getting-there/

The New York Jets might be a surprising 3-3 to start the year — Sunday’s horror show against the Pittsburgh Steelers notwithstanding — but they are doing more than re-establishing themselves as a potentially solid team. They are beginning to identify who they are off the field as well.

Due to some vision from team president Neil Glatt and general manager John Idzik, both of whom get where the Jets fan base currently is and where it needs to go, the team is taking steps towards a true homefield advantage and a true sense of community.

For years, the Jets lacked an identity and forever seemed to be a chameleon in the NFL, going along with the latest fads and the new quirks but never really getting the whole tradition thing down right. Part of it might be that the Jets have been such a woefully horrible franchise for much of their existence, making their history anything but storied. But even still, they have struggled to create an identity and a tradition off the football field. Losing “Fireman Ed” midway through last season took away the one unique aspect of Jets games and Jets culture.

Page 27: October 15, 2013 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2013/10-october/... · 5 | P a g e Jet streams Ryan joked Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski,

27 | P a g e

But now, finally, for the first time since their inception in 1960, the team is going about creating a culture around their game day, turning a sterile and cold MetLife Stadium bit by bit from a drab game day experience to something that is beginning to build its own life.

The team has taken the right steps forward, including starting a team walk off the bus through the parking lot into the stadium where Jets fans can line a corridor and greet the players. It is a scene reminiscent of the walk made by college teams on game day and gives the players a chance to connect with the fans and vice versa.

For a Jets team looking to make inroads in the area in what is a baseball town that also by and large supports the Giants, not the team in green, the walk through the parking lot serves as an important opportunity to thank longstanding fans and make new ones.

And while Jets fans may be slow to embrace the Aviators marching band, it is a more authentic and fan-friendly endeavor than piped in music blaring over the loudspeakers. It at least gets fans and their voices involved rather than being passive spectators.

But also a big part of what the Jets are doing this year is a significant push towards alumni relations. During training camp, roughly two dozen former players watched practice and drills when the team returned to its New Jersey facility. The Jets have struggled with alumni relations, a major reason why so many former players rather easily rip the team in the media when things go south. But on Sunday for the Ring of Honor celebration for Marty Lyons, the Jets effectively reached out to former players to be included in the day.

It was the right thing to do and something that Idzik, whose father was a coach on the Jets, needs to continue to press for more inclusion of former players as part of this team’s daily functions.

It is all a step in creating a sense of community around the team, a familiar bond between players and fans and the team itself. It is the type of bond that makes the NFL so special in places like Pittsburgh and Kansas City and Baltimore — cities that have embraced the league and teams that promote their history and passion back towards for the fans.

For football, while it is a game, is more than a game. It is spending and celebrating three hours on a Sunday afternoon with friends and strangers, united not by class or creed but by the green and white that drapes their shoulders. Slowly, the Jets are getting this and understanding it.

And that is another win for the Jets this season.
