Put on Your Party Shoes November 4

Have you ever been introduced to fellow parishioners after church on Sunday and then forgot-ten their names by the time you see them the following week? It’s something that can happen to all of us.

This fall, Christ Church is introducing a fun and exciting program for us to get to know each other better, in a relaxed setting, called Foyer Groups. Foyer Groups are an easy way for parishioners to get together on a regular but informal basis for purely social reasons: to enjoy each other’s company, to strengthen bonds of community, to meet new members and to discover just how interesting the lives of all of us truly are. Small groups will meet several times throughout the program year in the home of one of the members of the group. There is no agenda or plan – just casual fellowship and a refreshing meal. For a Q & A sheet and other details, please go to our web page (christchurchwinnetka.org.) You can sign up on Sundays at church or by emailing Lucia Webster at [email protected].

This is a wonderful opportunity to make new friends, reinforce ties with old friends and to learn about the remarkable people you see on Sundays at church. Do give it a try!

We are dismissed from Sunday worship with a call to live out our faith in the world. But, how do we keep God close? How do we fully integrate our faith in our busy lives? Christ Church offers many opportunities throughout the week to continue the discussion, to learn how to live life through our faith.

When we are confi rmed, we enter into a commitment to lifelong learning. Our faith is not simply about accepting the Creeds. Rather, our faith is an ongoing relationship with God, which calls us to continue to explore and grow in our faith throughout our lives. Scripture is always speaking to us in new ways, ways that our relevant to our current lives. Please join us and be inspired by a life lived with God.

Integrating Faith and Life

“Whenever I hear the words ‘You are sealed by the Holy Spirit in baptism and marked as Christ’s own forever’ during a baptismal service at church, I clutch my heart and gush…I fi nd myself want-ing to turn to my neighbor, my hand still over my heart, and whisper with tears in my eyes, ‘Did you see what just happened?’” In her book Reluctant Pilgrim, Enuma Okoro’s experience of the sacra-ment of baptism is remarkably consistent with this momentous rite.

Baptism dates this program year will be:

All Saints’ Sunday, November 6, 2011Baptism of Our Lord, Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012Easter Vigil, Saturday, April 7, 2012Pentecost Sunday, May 27, 2012

If you wish to share in “God’s most beautiful and magnifi cent gift,” (Gregory of Nazianzus) for yourself or a child, please contact The Rev. Jim Harrison at the Parish Offi ce.

Upcoming Baptismal Dates

“I’m not sure who gets more out of this ministry – the people I serve or me,” explains Katy Knoer, the newest member of the Christ Church Meals-At-Home team. “The people I deliver to are so genuinely grateful. I leave their homes feeling grateful, happy and touched by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Meals-At-Home is one of our most basic – and yet most vital -- outreach ministries. And we desperately need drivers.

It only takes an hour or two as little as once a month. Volunteers simply drive to the hospital, pick up a few nutritious meals, and deliver them to homebound individuals. Christ Church is responsible for all Tuesday lunches, and one or two Friday lunches, each month. You can sign up for one specifi ed day a month, or you can be a regular substitute. For most recipients, it’s their only nutritious meal of the day. And for some it’s their only daily contact with the world outside.

Elise Covey, dedicated and long time committee chair of Meals-At-Home, says that even though she’s only there for a few minutes, it literally makes her day. “When a recipient opens the door, there is gratitude written all over their face,” she says.

Are You Called? If so, call Elise Covey at 847-446-4333. She would love to answer all of your questions.

On Thursday August 4 seventy-fi ve travelers (48 Choir members and 27 groupies) representing Christ Church ranging in age from Phoebe Knoer (age 3) to … on second thought…won’t go there… let’s just say many who are young in heart … boarded planes for London to embark on the seventh choir trip to England. After enjoying the weekend in London the group headed south to Canterbury where the choir served as the choir-in-residence at the Cathedral for a week singing six Evensongs and one Holy Eucharist service. The choir of forty-eight was led by our Choirmaster, Richard Clemmitt. At the end of the Wednesday Evensong service one member of the congregation was overheard saying, “That Choirmaster is so very English.” A high compliment indeed when you are honored to conduct in Canterbury Cathedral. This was the fi rst trip where all services and practices (six days out of seven) were accompanied by one organist, our own Jay Peterson. One of the bennies of the trip was being able to hear Jay’s sweet music fl oating out of the Cathedral at 9 at night as he practiced for the next day’s program.

Carrie Healy, Elizabeth Clemmitt and Charlie Healy, our able bodied Tour Leaders, never lost anyone as they moved the group through London and Canterbury and the side trips to Hatfi eld, Cheshunt, Battle, Chartwell, Leeds Castle and Dover. Charlie actually moved beyond his duties as a Tour Manager when he single handedly took the “Gang of Six” (Adam Clemmitt, Will Kerpan, Tristan Knoer, Adam Lloyd-Jones, Neil Madlener and Emmanuel Ruiz who range in age from 10-12 and were all staying in room Six at the Youth Hostel) - out for a pizza dinner in Canterbury.

The Close of Trip Gathering was a particular highlight of the trip as we were dazzled by the slide show prepared by Sheri Fisher and Dietrich Knoer and accompanied by the Choir’s music recorded by Charlie Healy. But perhaps the highest highlight was the skit preformed by the Lloyd-Jones family revolving around Cow Patty. So much talent in one family. Be sure to ask any one on the trip for more details.

To assure you all that the Holy Spirit is alive, well and also residing in Canterbury, England I leave you with one story. As is the practice at Christ Church in Winnetka the Prayers of the People always includes a prayer for a designated Anglican diocese which can be anywhere in the world. During our fi rst Evensong it was the diocese of Renk, Sudan, which is one of our two sister dioceses. So familiar to us all.

The choir will be traveling to Boston over President’s Weekend in 2012 and to York, England in the summer of 2013. It’s never too early to practice. Richard always welcomes new members to the choir.

Vestry Notes - August 30, 2011

Welcome: The Vestry welcomed Kenneth Erickson as our part-time interim assistant priest, who will be here 2 days a week to help with the workload for Jeanne, Jim and Heath. Kenneth is currently the Head of Boys and the Missioner for Ecumenical Ministry at Holy Family School, the merger of St. Gregory’s (a Benevolence recipient) and Holy Family Lutheran School. Kenneth will reduce his hours in his current post in order to be at Christ Church. Ken’s fi rst offi cial Sunday will be our Kick-Off Sunday. Kenneth lives with his wife and son in Hubbard Woods.

Minutes: The minutes of the June 28, 2011 were approved as submitted.

Interim Rector’s Report: Interim Rector Jeanne Stewart reported that she has spent much of her time planning for the fall. Formation for adults and youth, including the mailing explaining what we will be doing this fall. Much work on understanding staffi ng to move responsibilities among the clergy and to lay leadership. Discover Sunday will welcome everyone back. It happens to fall on the 10th anniversary of September 11, so there will be a Taize service at 5pm hosted by Christ Church and sponsored by the Interfaith Council.

Curate’s Report: Curate Jim Harrison reported that he was involved in planning for the fall, along with premarital counseling and pre-baptismal counseling with 5 families before two beach baptisms. Jim and Missy celebrated the arrival of their grandson Cameron, and spent 16 days in the Holy Land with Bishop Lee. Jim and Missy have met with several new families interested in Christ Church.

Kick-Off Sunday Report: Kathleen Lloyd-Jones reported that the kick-off picnic is planned, with fried chicken or hot dogs & hamburgers. It will be blended with the Ministries Fair. Julie Flood added that we are calling it Discover Sunday, to learn about what’s happening. The challenge is to get people to come to the ministry fair, and to get more conversation going. We will blend the Ministry Fair with the luncheon. There will be stations with food and a representative from a particular ministry. Tent cards will explain what each ministry is, and the hope is that people will engage with the representatives as they get food. We will also try to put more attention on the ministries throughout the year. There will be a ministry of the month column in the Parish Paper, and perhaps a mini Ministry Fair in the middle of the program year.

Dinner Group Initiative: Kathleen Lloyd-Jones reported on the revival of the dinner group initiative. Lucia Webster has agreed to take the lead in establishing this group, but is looking for the support of the Vestry. The concept is to sign up and be placed into a mixed group (across generational lines) who would then meet at each house. The sign up will be on Discovery Sunday. Lawson suggested that each group can host the new Rector as a way to get to know him or her.

Formation and Spirituality Program: Shay Robertson reported that there is a lot going on. The new curriculum for Sundays is in place. When the Rector is called, we may re-open formation for further discussion. Friday morning prayer will start in the Chapel at 7 a.m. Shay and Heath Missner are planning a winter retreat in February. The initial retreat will likely be a women’s retreat, focused around Falling Upwards. Children’s Ministry is thriving. Book group, Monday morning prayer group, and Karygma will be on-going, Holy Caffeine with Jim, Tuesday presen-tations along the lines of John Philip Newell.

Stewardship: Doug Peterson reported that the stewardship campaign is making progress. Consecration Sunday will be October 23, with the mailings going out about 10 days in advance. The Sunday before will be “testimonial Sunday” to allow families to hear and think about the spiritual basis of pledging. The committee will explore educational pieces.

Rectory Renovation: Jim Bayley reported that the renovation costs have been reduced on a number of things and then expanded with ad-ditional exterior work, with the end result that everything is at about the same price of $220,000. There is a big push to obtain donated good or small donations from parishioners to offset some of the costs. The work will begin in mid-September. Construction will be done by approximately Thanksgiving. The boiler work is stagnant but will get going again.

Tree Removal: Marcy Champagne reported that the Elm in front of the Rectory has been removed. The south Maple has also been trimmed. The locust in the playground has also been removed. The trees in the Churchyard have yet to be removed, but it will be soon. The stairs on Humbolt have been done, and bids are being received for work on the gate to the Churchyard.

Search Committee: Kurt Anstaett reported that the Search Committee has been working in earnest. We have 18 candidates who have applied. Applications are still being accepted. Within the next few weeks, we will start to do phone interviews. Then there will be parish visits. September will be a very active month. We are still hopeful that we will have a small number of fi nalists and making a recommendation to the Vestry with a candidate in place in the fi rst quarter.

Other Business: Jim Harrison announced that the Diocese is presenting a 2-day workshop on September 30 and October 1 on leadership training called Fierce Conversations. It is designed to teach leaders how to have honest and diffi cult conversations without running away from the discomfort. Jim and Heath will be attending and are hoping for several others to attend as well. Jim will circulate information via email following the meeting. Those interested in attending should contact Jim.
