Nan’s News
Lovin‟ this cool— crisp — Fall weather. I‟m thinking we are not going to have color to the leavesthis year because they have already started falling off the trees — there are a few in our neighborhood that are bare
already — rain would be great.
I was sitting at a traffic light the other day and the car in front of me had a license plate with theOlympic rings on it. I think it is special that Oklahoma City is one of only five (I think that number is correct) cit-
ies in the nation that has them. As the saying goes…we‟ve come a long way— and then the Devon tower reached
the 50th floor a couple weeks ago — loved watching the tree and the American flag being placed on top. Lot of
wonderful things happening in Oklahoma City. I take my hat off for our community leaders. The other day I got a text from my cousin James that his daughter Jill had been stopped by Russell
Westbrook — that was a story I needed to hear. I was thinking that it was a police officer with the name — but not so
Jill was cruising‟ down the street in Edmond and he flagged her down-Russell was one of her trainees when shewas at UCLA. I thought, now I will have Jill contact him and arrange it so I could meet him personally. I called
Jack‟s niece who plays basketball at UCO to tease her that I might get to meet Russell (he is her favorite Thunder
player) - but the joke is on me. Jack opens his FB and there is a picture of Britney and Russell along with her roomies. Now why wasn‟t I invited?
At the NW Chamber Taste of Northwest food fest and auction, I bid high enough to win the oppor-
tunity to spend a day at the Capitol with Senator David Holt and a day to shadow Commissioner Brian Maughan.
These days should be an absolute blast. These guys are going to be in for a treat — should I be my blonde hair per-
sonality, or the red? These two guys will never be the same!October is breast cancer awareness month and the Susan
Koman walk in OKC is October 15, — please give generously to support
the research- I thank God I am a survivor — going next week as a matter of fact for a follow-up MRI. I‟m confident all will be well!
Until next month, count your blessings...name them one
by one...and may they exceed infinity.
Nan
My ideas usually come not at my desk writing, but in the midst of
living……………-Anais Nin

Columbus Day: The True Story
Everyone knows that Columbus commanded
three ships when he first voyaged to the NewWorld: The Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.
Right?Actually, according to a 1987 article in the
L.A. Times, those weren't the actual names of the
ships that the intrepid explorer sailed on. Theywere nicknames. The Santa Maria’s real name was
La Gallicia. The Nina was really Santa Clara and
the Pinta’s true name is unknown. The ships werebuilt and supplied by a Spanish town called Palos
as a punishment for offending the crown.
And you probably know that Columbus didn‟tactually “prove” the world was round. By the 15thcentury virtually all educated Europeans knew the
world wasn‟t flat, though some uneducated folks
probably still expected him to fall off the edge.
Use your imagination not to scare your-
self to death but to inspire yourself to
life. Adele Brookman
The Perfect Solution
An employer once offered the following scenario to somecandidates for an important job:
“You are driving along in your car on a wild stormy
night. You pass by a bus stop, and you see three peoplewaiting for the bus: One is an old woman who‟s obviously
very ill; another is a close friend who once saved your life
the third is the perfect mate you‟ve been looking for your
whole life. What do you do?The options are obvious: You could pick up the old
woman and possibly save her life; you could offer a ride to
your friend for having once saved you; or you could inviteyour perfect mate because your may never find him or her
again.
The best candidate gave this answer: “I would give the
car keys to my friend and ask him to take the old woman tothe hospital. Then I‟d stay behind and wait for the bus with
the woman of my dreams.”

It’s Fall:
Time to prepare your home for winter
Fall maintenance is important because it helps make
homes more energy efficient during the winter months, and will safeguard homes against potential seasonal
„disasters‟ such as leaking roofs, or home fires caused
by neglecting chimneys. Here are some tips to protectyour home.
1. Check the heating system. Check the filter, pilot
light and burners in a system fueled by gas or oil. Fire-
places, boilers, water heaters, space heaters and wood burning stoves should also be serviced every year. Have
the specialist inspecting your unit show you how to
change the filter and then you should change it at leastonce every 2 months. Clean ducts in the heating system.
Clean and vacuum dust from vents, baseboard heater
and cold air returns. Dust build up in ducts is a major cause of indoor pollutants. Ducts should be profession-
ally cleaned about every three years.
2. Have the chimney inspected by a qualified chim-
ney professional. Chimneys should be checked andcleaned, if necessary, on an annual basis. If you are us-
ing a wood stove this season, be sure that the stovepipewas installed correctly according to the manufacturer‟s
recommendations and local codes. If there is any doubt,
a building inspector or fire official can determinewhether the system is properly installed.
3. Disconnect your outside hose from the hydrant. It‟s
a simple task, but one commonly overlooked.
Unleash your creativity with the right questionsPeople often talk about creativity as if it must arrive as a bolt out
the blue, a flash of inspiration that strikes without warning.
In truth, however, there are ways to manufacture creativity, and
most of them have to do with asking the right questions. The next
time you‟ve got a tricky problem to solve, try these queries to start
thinking differently.
What would happen if…?
Can we do this a different way…?
Why do we do it this way…?
What‟s the silliest way we could do this…?
What‟s the worst thing we could try…?
If solving this problem were a matter of life and death, what would
we do?
If we were one of our competitors, how would we do it?
What three changes would make this a better idea?

Keep your desk - and your career - well organized for success.
A messy desk doesn‟t just slow down your ability to find things - it can im-
pede your career development. A survey of HR executives by OfficeTeam
found that more than 8 in 10 said an untidy workspace influences their view of
that employees professionalism. Peter Walsh, of Peter Walsh design in
Sherman Oaks, California, says that almost 49 percent of your co-workers
wonder about your abilities if you‟re not capable of keeping your desk clean.
With that in mind, try these tips for keeping your working area neat
and efficient:
Create “zones.” Don‟t just toss documents, books and supplies, etc.,
across your desk. Designate specific areas for particular items: progress
reports in one corner, mail in another, stapler and paperclips in your top
drawer and so forth. This will make finding things quicker and easier.
Clean up regularly. Before lunch, and right before you go home, spend a
few minutes sorting your desk. File what you need, discard what you
don‟t , and straighten everything up so it‟s waiting in the right location
when you return.
Respond promptly. Resist the urge to set stuff aside for an indeterminate
“later”. Make a point of filing, discarding, or acting on items right away so
they don‟t pile up and become overwhelming to contemplate.
One is the loneliest numberAre Americans becoming more isolated and lonely
We‟re certainly spending more time alone.
According to the book The Lonely American, by
Jaqueline Olds and Richard Schwartz(Beacon Press),
percent of Americans lived in one-person households
the year 2000, more than triple the 7.7 percent in 194
From 1985 to 2004, the number of people who said th
had no one to discuss important matters with tripled, t
almost 25 percent. As we spend more time on the Inte
are we losing touch with the people around us, or just
finding new ways of connecting?
The eyes of compassionOn a cold evening in Virginia in the 18th centu
an old man trudged toward his distant home. As
stopped to rest, he spotted several men on horsback headed down the road in his direction. Hewatched as the first went by, and then the next,
and then a third. Finally, as the last approachedthe old man lifted a hand. “Sir,” he called out,
“could you give an old man a ride home?”
The horseman stopped and instantly replied, “Certainly.” He helped the old man up onto his
horse, then mounted himself and rode off. They soon reached the old man’s cottage, whe
he thanked the horseman for his assistance. “You’re most welcome,” said the rider, “but I a
curious. I saw three people ride by ahead of meand yet you didn’t lift your hand to ask them forhelp. What made you so certain that I would heyou?” “I’ve been around for a long time,” said tman, “and I reckon I know people pretty good. When I looked into the eyes of those riders I cosee they wouldn’t care about my situation. But
when I saw your eyes, I saw kindness and compsion there. I knew that you would welcome theopportunity to give me assistance in my time of need.” “Thank you for your kind words,” the horsema
replied. “I hope I am never too busy with my owaffairs that I fail to respond to the needs of othewith kindness and compassion.”
Legend has it that the horseman was...Thomas Jefferson.
Make sure to wash those fruits and veggies
What could be better for your health than fresh fruits and vegetables? But
even the ripest apple or the leafiest lettuce can carry dirt and nasty bacteria that
need to be thoroughly washed off before it‟s safe to eat. Follow these tips for
making sure your produce is untainted:
Start with a clean slate. Wipe down your kitchen counter, scrub your
knives and cutting boards, and wash your hands before cleaning your food.
Water is best. Don‟t use soap or detergents to wash your produce; they
can seep into the items and potentially make people sick. Use cool water
and wash for 30 to 60 seconds in most cases. Some nutritionists say that a
mixture of three parts water and one part white vinegar or lemon juice iseven more effective, as long as you thoroughly rinse the produce when
you‟re done.
Wash peeled food too. Dirt and microbes can hide in the crevices of such
fruits as orange and bananas, even though you don‟t eat the skin, washing
it prevents the spread of harmful material from the peel to the fruit through
contact with your fingers.
Don’t wash and store. Wait until you‟re ready to eat the item in question.
If you wash it and then stick it in the refrigerator, it will retain moisture and
spoil faster.
Use a brush. For firmer fruits and vegetables such as apples and potatoes,
a stiff vegetable brush can do a good job of removing dirt and particles you
don‟t want to eat.
Good leadership consists of showing average
people how to do the work of superior people.
- John D Rockefeller
A humorous look at life….
We never really grow up. We just learn how to act in public.
Whenever I fill out an application, in the part that says. “In case of emer-
gency, notify…” I put “Doctor”
When tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the fire department
usually uses water.
You do not need a parachute to skydive. You need a parachute to skydive
twice.
You‟re never too old to learn something stupid.
Ordinary riches can be stolen; real riches can-
not. In your soul are infinitely precious things
that cannot be taken from you.
- Oscar Wilde

Trick or Treat?
Enjoy Halloween with a safe costumeHalloween is coming, and your children areno doubt excited by the prospect of dressing
up as their favorite animal, superhero, orcelebrity. But as a parent, it’s yourresponsibility to be sure they’re safe as theywalk from house to house trick-or-treating intheir costumes. Keep these tips and precau-tions in mind:
Flame retardant materials are a must.Check the label on any costume you buyfrom a store. If you’re making your child’s
outfit, use only synthetic, flame-retardantfabrics.
Try costumes on before big night. This gives you time to make any alterationsnecessary. You want the costume to beloose enough for your children to wear asweater on a chilly night, but not so baggythat they’ll trip, or snag an arm or leg. Be
careful of capes that might drag or trip achild.
Don’t Blend in the dark. A bright, colorful costume is best, but if yourchild is determined to dress as Batman orthe Grim Reaper, a few strips of reflectivetape will help him or her show up more ef-fectively in streetlights and car headlights.
Avoid bulky masks.Makeup is usually better than a mask, aslong as it’s nontoxic and doesn’t containanything likely to cause an allergic reaction.Masks that are difficult to remove quicklycan be hazardous in an emergency. If yourchild insists on a mask, make sure the ear, nose and mouth openings are wide enough.

Facebook users: Friendly and Trusting
Are you an average social networker? If so, you haveabout 229 Facebook friends, according to a recent Pew
Study, Social Networking Site and Our Lives.
Just who are these “friends?” The average list includes: High school friends: 22 percent
Extended family: 12 percentCo-workers: 10 percentCollege friends: 9 percent
Immediate family: 8 percent
Voluntary groups: 7 percent
Neighbors: 2 percentAnd chances are you trust these people, and people in
general. The study found that “ a Facebook user who
uses the site multiple times per day is 43 percent morelikely than other Internet users and more than three
times as likely as non-Internet users to feel that most
people can be trusted.”

FRIENDS OLD AND NEW
Make new friends, but keep the old; those are silver, these are gold.New-made friendships, like new wine, age will mellow and refine.
Friendships that have stood the test - time and change - are surely best; browmay wrinkle, hair grow gray, friendships never know decay.
For ‘mid old friends, tried and true, once more we our youth renew. But oldfriends, alas! may die, new friends must replace their supply.
Cherish friendships in your breast; new is good, but old is best.
Make new friends, but keep the old; those are silver, these are gold.
