Social Justice CORNER “The Francis Effect”

Have you seen it in your community? Have you felt it in your heart? Our Gospel this week speaks of a blind man on the side of the road who cries out to Jesus while being scolded by those around him. The blind man asks to have his sight back. He demonstrates his faith by calling out to Jesus despite those trying to silence him. Jesus asks the man to come forward. The man hears the voice of Jesus and springs up as an expression of his hope. Jesus responds by returning his sight along with encouraging his faith. This supported faith and spiritual sight sets the man on a new path as he walks with Jesus. Pope Francis stated in his visit to America, “Men need to raise people out of pov-erty. People need hope.”

Pope Francis, has accomplished this with many people in his humble honesty. Bishop McGrath stated at a recent Catholic Professionals meeting; Pope Francis says, 'Never cease to ask God for what you need.' The Bishop said, "Jesus Christ mans the desk day and night. He is the doorkeeper. When we ask, we need to be careful for what we ask for. Not everything we ask for is answered in the way we would expect - but bear in mind that everything we ask for is to fulfill the plans God has for us, not OUR plans but God's plans.” God gave us Jesus and defined for us our calling… to love one another as Jesus has loved us (John 15:12). Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

What is an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion? Each week, when you attend Holy Mass, you see a group of people go up on

the Altar after consecration to help the priest distribute Holy Communion. These

people are called “Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.” The role of the

Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion is to assist the Presiding Priest in the

distribution of Holy Communion at Mass. These people are called Extraordinary

Ministers not because they are somehow extraordinary in the sense of being better

than anyone else. An Extraordinary Minister is simply an extra person to assist the

Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion which is the presiding priest. Frequently,

people refer to the Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion as Eucharistic

Ministers but this is incorrect because the Eucharistic Minister properly refers only

to an ordained priest.

At Queen of Apostles, we have a dedicated group of Extraordinary Ministers

of Holy Communion who perform their duties diligently, solemnly and reverently.

However, we are always looking for more people to join us. If you think that you

may not be sufficiently spiritual to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Com-

munion, I once thought the same thing. Remember none of us are perfect and all

that we ask is that you respect the Body and Blood of Christ and carefully follow

the proper procedures that you are taught.

If you are interested to explore the possibility of becoming an Extraordinary

Minister of Holy Communion, please fill out a Liturgical Ministry Information

form available in the parish office.

Our Kindergartners through third graders have been so excited to learn in their new science class-

room. They have worked with their teacher, Mrs. Christine Usis, right from the start of the year on experiential and hands on projects. The students have engineered their names, created verte-brates from construction materials, and used their senses. Kindergart-ners made their own paper plate musical instruments to shake loudly or softly and quickly or slowly. Second graders have studied states of matter and then used Fruit LoopsTM cereal to show how molecules would look as those states of matter. First graders have taken a listen-ing walk outside and then discussed and recorded what they learned. Third graders will continue on with their vertebrate project by making habitats.

“Dear young friends, in a culture of relativism and the ephem-eral, where many preach the importance of ‘enjoying’ the moment, I ask you, instead, to swim against the tide; yes, I am asking you to rise against this culture that sees everything as temporary and that ultimately believes you are incapable of responsibility, that believes you are incapable of true love.” - Pope Francis, Message for the 30th World Youth Day.

The RISE! 2015 Conference is a free two-day event for Bay Area teens, young adults as well as parents, catechists and teachers, that will take place on the 13th/14th of November, 2015. It consists of a series of talks by keynote speakers (Matt Fradd and Jackie Francois), participation in the Holy Mass, op-portunity for Confession, fellowship, and fun!

Following the invitation of our Holy Father, the purpose of RISE! 2015 is to instruct and encourage the youth to rediscover the beauty of the human vocation to love, providing them the arguments they need to rise “against the widespread tendency to reduce love to something banal, reducing it to its sexual aspect alone, deprived of its essential characteristics of beauty, com-munion, fidelity and responsibility” and for the adults to be aware of the dangers that their children are exposed to and how to prevent and act about them. PEACEMAKERS

Our young people have a keen sense of social justice. From the time they are very young, children understand that in order for there to be peace, there must be clearly established rules. If you’ve ever seen a group of 4th graders on a playground, you’ll know what I mean. They can spend HOURS arguing over the rules of their games.

As parents, we often remind our kids that life is not fair. But while life might not be fair, we have the responsibility to teach our kids the other half of that equation. No, life is not fair…so what can we do to make it better? What can we do to enrich the lives of those who are less fortunate than ourselves?

Over the past two weeks, families in our Faith Formation program have been donating toys, toiletries, snacks and other items which our Middle School students have placed in shoeboxes, wrapped up, and prepared to deliver to children living at the San Jose Family Shelter. They took on this project with tremendous enthusiasm and in just over an hour, prepared over 50 shoeboxes.

Social Justice begins with each of us…and sometimes it is the smallest of things that can bring great joy. Let us never pass up an opportu-nity to show mercy and compassion for anyone in need.
