Racquet StringingTIP OF THE MONTH What string tension is right for you?
In general, string your racquet at higher tensions for more control and lower ten-sions for more power. However, string and tension work in unison with your frame. There are a few other variables to consider that can help you determine the perfect string and tension combina-tion for you.
In addition to providing more power, lower tensions and softer strings are also recommended if you have arm, elbow or shoulder problems. Lighter, stiffer frames usually work better with softer, arm friendly strings strung at middle or a lower ten-sion. They help cushion the shock that those types of frames transmit to your arm.
Higher level players usually prefer heavier, head light, more flexible frames. Because these frames are easier on your arm, you have more stringing options. If you’re not a string breaker, high quality synthetics are a great choice. They provide great feel and power. You can string at a higher tension to provide more control with less impact on your body. If you burn through strings a little more often, a hybrid string job, like a durable polyester main string matched with high quality synthetic gut, is a great op-tion. Be careful with the tension on the main strings. Due to their stiffness, too high a tension can be hard on your arm – with a polyester string you should drop the tension a couple of pounds.
Tension ranges vary from racquet to racquet – stop in the Tennis Welcome Center and our stringing staff can help you determine which string tension is best suited for your game.
