Technology College NewsAs a specialist Technology College Heathfield is committed to promoting Design Technology, Mathematics and Science in the local community.

Recently Newlands Community Primary School invited us to take part in their Science week. As part of this some of their students had the chance to make use of one of the newly refurbished Science laboratories when they visited Heathfield for part of a morning. They had been studying indicators at Newlands and took this further by exploring how pH can be measured.

They finished off by exploring how the stage magic trick of turning water into ‘wine’ can be explained once you know how to use indicators. A number of other activities with Primary schools are planned for this year.

Since September 2006, Heathfield High School has been part of the Hinckley & Bosworth School Sport Partnership. I am fortunate to have been appointed the School Sport Co-ordinator for Heathfield and our Family of Schools. All the Primary Schools have a Primary Link Teacher (PLT) responsible for the related work in their school. I am released from teaching for 2 days a week to co-ordinate and develop young leaders, after school activities, inter and intra school competition and local community links during the next three years, i.e. the co-ordination of school sport within the family of schools.

YOUNG SPORTS LEADERS AWARDThis award is run once a term and is nationally recognised as a stepping stone to higher awards available at Key Stage 4 & 5. It encourages young people to take responsibility for themselves and others, develop leadership, co-operation, moral and social skills. This award teaches these topics through a practical, activity based and holistic approach. It is a 7 week course which is assessed throughout their sessions. We run the award in conjunction with students and staff from WBCC. The Year 9 Leaders first festival is on Thursday 15th October. They will be running the Year 3 Tri-Golf Festival for our Family of Schools.

Extended Schools News

When I came into post last September as Extended Schools Development Coordinator for the Barwell, Earl Shilton and Stoney Stanton Family of Schools, the first thing that I set about doing was a family survey. I wanted to find out if parents, children and young people were accessing the Extended Services opportunities that were already in place and how good they were. I also wanted to find out if there were any gaps that I could fill using my skills and funding that I have available. Two common themes that came out of the surveys were that people were accessing and happy with the existing services on offer during term time, but were looking for additional opportunities during the school holidays. A Summer Play Scheme seemed like an ideal way to me of filling this gap.Planning for the scheme started very early in February. I had to secure funding, write policies, advertise and recruit for Play Workers and also spread the word about the Scheme. I wanted to combine funding from County Hall with funding from local schools to make sure that the scheme was affordable but worthwhile.

The Barwell, Earl Shilton and Stoney Stanton Summer Play Scheme 2009 ran for 9 days in total at Barwell Junior School, Heathfield High School and Weavers Close School in Earl Shilton. We had 20 spaces available each day and I

could have easily have filled each place at least twice! The scheme was open to all schools and it was an ideal opportunity to socialise and have fun during the incredibly long break this year.We had many varied activities taking place from arts & crafts through to table top games and sports. The facilities at Heathfield School meant that we had a very theatrical week, putting on mini productions of Grease and Narnia with lots of music and dance surrounding the activities. The only thing that surprised me was that the scheme only appealed to children up to the age of 11.

Why is this? What I would like from you now are your suggestions for next year. How can I tempt the 11 – 14 year olds to join in? Would you like a separate scheme next year? Does it have to be themed around sports or drama?I would love to hear your suggestions so I can be truly inclusive next year. Please get in touch with your thoughts and ideas via [email protected]. TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT!!!!!

• If your child is absent from school, please phone us on the first day of absence before 9.30 am, and then write a note in the student planner for when they return.

• We would encourage parents not to take their children out of school for holidays in term time. It is very difficult for students to catch up on the work they miss and could affect their achievement. If unavoidable please let us know at least two weeks in advance, by filling in a Holiday Application Form.

• If your child has to visit the Doctors, Dentist or Opticians, please try to arrange these after school hours or during the holidays. Sometimes it can’t be helped but please ensure that you let the Attendance Manager or Form Tutor know in advance.

Puzzles

Last term the team visited several of our feeder Primary schools to deliver some ICT/design activities on control. Groups of year 5 and 6 pupils built crocodiles out of Lego and then used computer software to program them. The result was a lot of snapping, snarling creatures and great fun was had by all!

In July approx. 90 Primary pupils and staff came to Heathfield to spend the morning in the design department, taking part in a range of activities

involving cookery, art and resistant materials. In Year 9, this year, pupils have been able to choose two options in design, rather than to rotate around all areas. The idea is to enable them to complete extended practical projects, enhance achievement and be excellent preparation for design at Key stage 4. This seems to have gone down very well and pupils are already demonstrating high levels of enjoyment and commitment.
