They were outstanding in their efforts in all areas on the court and displayed great sportsmanship. On Tuesday we welcomed Karin from the Port Phillip Eco Centre who conducted a rubbish and water audit of the school. Oscar, Harry and Robert met to discuss a means of monitoring our water bills, electricity, paper recycling and waste removal over a twelve month period. We look forward to the results of the audit. Karen did comment that we have a very clean playground. A big thankyou to all the community for supporting our rubbish free lunches. All students have been very busy preparing for the Art Show. Next week some items will be on display in the foyer as we lead into the Art show on Wednesday the 19 th . The show will commence at 6:30 pm and concludes at 8 pm. THURSDAY 13th OCTOBER 2016

Dear Families,

This week has commenced with eight year 6 boys going through to the next division in Basketball with school sport Victoria. They were outstanding in their efforts in all areas on the court and displayed great sportsmanship.

On Tuesday we welcomed Karin from the Port Phillip Eco Centre who conducted a rubbish and water audit of the school. She worked with year 6 students on the rubbish audit and year 4 on the water audit. Oscar, Harry and Robert met to discuss a means of monitoring our water bills, electricity, paper recycling and waste removal over a twe lve month period. We look forward to the results of the audit. Karen did comment that we have a very clean playground. A big thankyou to all the community for supporting our rubbish free lunches.

All students have been very busy preparing for the Art Show. Next week some items will be on display in the foyer as we lead into the Art show on Wednesday the 19th. The show will commence at 6:30 pm and concludes at 8 pm. All children will have at least 1 single piece of art each and a classroom piece. All families are invited to come there will be Indonesian dancing, auctions, performances from our Choir, and lots of displays. It has been wonderful to see students, families and teachers working together to achieve wonderful art pieces.

Nearly every space in the school is full of different groups of people creating wonderful art pieces. Here is a picture of Robert using the principal’s chair and computer to ensure that art pieces are completed. We thank all those who have contributed. A special thanks to Mrs. Gabbi Davoren who is leading the project.

Walk To School

School Closure Days- Friday 28th & Monday 31st October

In previous years our school, like many others has had a School Closure Day on the Monday before the Melbourne Cup, this day has generally been focused on writing of end of year reports and collating assessments. This will be the case again this year but this year I would like to add Friday 28th October as a school closure day because we have the opportunity to obtain the services of a highly qualified speaker on the subject of Autism Perspectives and Behaviour Management Strategies.

Please make a diary note regarding our School Closure Days on Friday 28th and Monday 31st October.

School Fees All School fees were due for payment by Friday 16th September. Please finalise all outstanding accounts. I ask for your full support in this matter.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the Art show.

Religion in Year 5

In grade 5 we have been learning about the Rosary in religion. We have been learning about the Mysteries of the Rosary, the history of the Rosary and how Mary is connected with it.

We have had Mathletics now for over a term and we received our 2016 usage report for St. John Vianney’s School. At our school we have earned 308,253 Live Maths Points and had an average accuracy of 95%.

Students have been engaged with 35,417 minutes of log-in time and 117 certificates have been awarded. This is fantastic to see and we should be very proud

of all the time we have spent exploring Mathletics. Another congratulations to Chantelle Cleary (Foundation), William Bobetic (Year 3) and Rachel Hoppe (Year 6) for receiving awards from Mathletics for outstanding performance on Mathletics tasks. You are St. John Vianney’s top three Mathletics students!

Mathletics at home: Mathletics has been incorporated into homework grids. Mathletics offers Curriculum activities along with opportunities to explore different levels in the Live Mathletics and Rainforest Maths (you can click on ANY level and have a go at the activities). This means that if you would like to practise skills from prior years, you can do so and if you’d like to try something more challenging there is the option to do that as well!

Keep playing!

Uniform Shop

At this week’s PA Meeting it was decided that the Uniform Shop will now open monthly. This will start in November. The first Wednesday of every month the shop will be open from 3.15pm. At the start of each Term the shop will be open an extra week to accommodate change in uniform/seasons. You are still able to leave orders at the office each week that will be filled weekly as the need arises. We thank our mums Collette Beck, Kate Pearce and Kylie Leighton who look after this wonderful service to our community.

ONE OF OUR PIECES UP FOR AUCTION AT NEXT WEEKS ART SHOW

Native American Feathers

The Year Six students have created a piece of art work that represents the meanings of feathers to the Native American People. Feathers can represent different things, such as, “Killed an Enemy”, “Warrior Wounded”, “Warrior Wounded Many Times”, and other warrior achievements. The meaning of their feather is very important to their cultural and spiritual beliefs, in particular the idea that all things within the universe, including birds, have souls or spirits.

Sport News- Basketball Last Friday, the All Star boys played off against Sandringham Primary to decide the winner of the district and to go through to Division Level in the School Sport Victoria Program. St John Vianney had a convincing win 47-16 over Sandringham and all of the boys combined well to produce a stellar performance. The boys in the team are: Xavier, Liam, Braedan , Harrison, Andrew, Nathan, Thom and Will. Congratulations boys and we will be going to the Division level in a few weeks to play off against schools from all around the state. Thank you to Tim Barber who coached the boys. The boys are also due to play in the next level at Hoop Time on the 17th October. We wish them the best of luck and well done to everyone.
