SAMOAGernot Reiners from the United States has submitted a second selection of Samoan rarities.

Lot 979

F 1914 'G.R.I.' Overprints '1 Shilling.' on 1mk red SG 111 with Shaved Stop after 'I', exceptional centring, tied to small piece by Apia cds, Bothe guarantee backstamp, Cat £7000+. Ex Gernot Reiners. HR Harmer Certificate (1945; the first we have encountered). [The rarest "basic" stamp of the New Zealand Occupation & a great Pacific Islands rarity of which only 35 examples were issued. Absent from Jack Hughes' collection. J Edgar Williams' example on piece sold for $13,225 at our auction of 5/12/2009. Gernot Reiners' other example sold for $8625 at our auction of 19/11/2011. Neither of these stamps exhibited the variety]

Our vendor notes that the overprinting of the GRI stamps commenced on 3rd September, a Thursday. This is the date given by Gibbons and Gibbs as the day of issue. However, given the laborious nature of the job, and the need to have lower denominations available for day-to-day use, Mr Reiners suggests that Monday 7th was more likely the First Day of Issue, especially for the High Values and more particularly for this stamp which was a correction to the more "common" 'Shillings' error.

NB: The Shaved Stop after 'I' variety - which also appears on the next two stamps - is not noted on the certificates, nor listed by Gibbons, nor recorded by Robert Gibbs. Gernot Reiners has advised that "I know of only one other copy of the 1/- (which is on cover!). This variety was not on the Marquess of Bute's sheet of the 2/- & my copy is the only one I have seen. The 3/- is more available with this variety but also rare"

PHILATELIC LITERATUREL "The Catalogue of the Royal Philatelic Collection: British Australasia" by Sir John Wilson (1952), being

unbound sections from the monumental complete catalogue - which is used by many as a book press! - including the two magnificent colour plates, in the original folio box in which the sections were issued.
