September 2016 Calendar of Events Baton Rouge Region September 2, 2016 (Friday): “Martin Accordion Factory / Prejean’s Restaurant ” (Located in Lafayette, LA) Depart from Plaza II: 8:00 am Return Time: 5:00 pm $60.00 per Person Martin Accordion is a family-owned business that has been manufacturing and repairing accordions for thirty years. The tour will consist of music with a live band (Joel Martin and the Family Band) and a discussion on making the accordions and they will discuss the history of Cajun music, and much more. We will be taken back to the early 1900’s with the old fashion authentic accordion music. We will learn the differences in accordion styles and pointing out the unique features of the Martin Accordion in the workshop and see the detail process of making an accordion. After this exciting adventure, we will dine at the famous Prejean’s Restaurant. RSVP REQUIRED September 6 (Tuesday): HEALTH SCREENING Presented by: Peoples Health Network Free blood pressure and glucose screening will be offered to the GO members. 9:00 am – 11:00 am Hospital Classroom RSVP REQUIRED September 9 (Friday): BREAKFAST BUNCH: “Doctor vs. PA, NP, Mid-Level” Presented by: Melissa Love, MD & Jolie May, PA Often when scheduling your physician appointments, you may be asked if you would like to see the Nurse Practioner or the Physician Assistant or the Mid-Level. We tend to shy away from these and would prefer to see our PCP. Dr. Love and Jolie will team up to discuss and educate us on a how they work together and when it might be appropriate to see someone other than your physician. 9:30 am - 11:00 am ▪ Hospital Classroom ▪ Snack provided RSVP REQUIRED September 15 (Thursday): MOVIE REVIEW: “Sully” AMC Theater 16040 Hatteras Avenue GO members will meet at the theater at 9:30am $5.00 per person - admission $4.00 per person – small drink, small popcorn & fruitie tootie snack. On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed the "Miracle on the Hudson" when Captain "Sully" Sullenberger glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career. September 22, 2016 (Thursday): “Hungarian Museum Tour/Carter Plantation Lunch & Tour/Old South Jamboree” (Located in Livingston Parish)Depart from Plaza II: 9:00 am Return Time: 3:30 pm$30.00 per PersonThe Hungarian Settlement: At the turn of the century, when our country was still young, Hungarians came to south Louisiana in search of a better life for themselves and their families. Land was purchased and cleared by hand. Through adversity and hardship, and a cash crop called strawberries, they carved out an existence and thrived. The result is Hungarian Settlement -- the largest rural Hungarian Settlement in the United States today. We will tour the settlement and have authentic Hungarian pastries and coffee. Carter Plantation: Thomas Freeman, the first African American to own land in Livingston Parish, acquired the property from Mr. Rheims in 1817. Mr. Freeman built the plantation house, which he named Sycamore, between 1817 and 1820. We will have lunch at the plantation home and enjoy a tour to learn the fantastic history of this plantation. Menu on the back. Old South Jamboree is a venue in Walker, Louisiana.  The Old South was started by Lester Hodges in 1965, and opened as a venue for country artists that were passing through after playing on the Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport.  There are signed pictures on the walls of performers that have played there.  Some of the acts that played there during its early years are Merle Haggard, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, and Don Williams.  We will hear the history of the venue. October 20, 2016 – ThursdayMitchell Farms Tour / Front Porch Restaurant$60.00 per PersonDiscover the story of Mitchell Farms on a Guided Tour of their Farm and Log Cabins. Mitchell farms started in 1960 by Dennis and Nelda. They have been growing row-crops since the beginning, got into peanuts in the 70s, began vegetables in the 80s and branched into Agritourism in 2006. Today it boasts 1,500 acres, located deep in the piney woods of southeast Mississippi. Join us for a day at the farm with lots of activities for everyone! Take a trip through history in our historic log cabins, antique tractors, and our 200 year-old mill stone or hop on for one of our trailer rides and go and meet our furry farm friends! Whatever you came to the farm for we're sure you'll have a blast! In the fall, groups can select from our own peanuts, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes. This is a working farm growing peanuts, corn, wheat, soybeans, pumpkins, peaches, and blackberries. We will shop at the “barn” for jams, jellies, etc. We will all get a pumpkin to bring home! We will dine at The Front Porch Restaurant: All-you-can-eat Southern BBQ & seafood served in a casual environment decorated with vintage signs.
