OCHA Map Construction Guidelines

Field Style Sheet V1

May 2006

This style sheet is meant to accompany the set of map templates, ESRI styles, and OCHA Map Creation Guidelines. Text size and line widths are only suggestions, each map will need adjustment to suite the content. For ease of use, the OCHA.style file can be put in <C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin\Styles> and accessed through the choice of styles. Alternatively, use the “add” button to choose the style sheet from its current location.

Natural features

Lakes, rivers, streams, oceans, seas, coast lines, etc. Depending on the color scheme you choose for the land features, select one or two colors to display water bodies. For two color schemes, rivers and coastlines should be the same color, with lighter colored large water body.

Labels: use Times New Roman Italic mixed-case for rivers and streams;UPPERCASE for large water-bodies. Text should follow the feature direction.

Rivers: 0.5pt solid line. Stream: 0.2 dashed line

Man-made features

Highways, main and regional roads, tracks, etc. Use a combination of the following symbols to highlight transit routes. Borders and local boundaries

Main road 1 Composite line: yellow (0-2-42-0) 0.5pt over black (0-0-0-100) 1.5pt

Composite line: yellow (255-255-148) 0.5pt over black (0-0-0) 1.5pt

Line thickness should remain between 0.2pt and 2pt to avoid overloading the A4 map.

Main road 2 0-0-0-80 52-52-52 0.8 pt 80% black line

Local road 1 0-0-0-60 102-102-102 0.6pt 60% black line

Local road 2 0-0-0-30 178-178-178

Labels: Ariel normal, 8 to 10pt depending on importance. Text should follow the feature direction.

Borders international 1

0-0-0-100 0-0-0 Black, dash-dot-dash, 2 pt

Borders international 2

The simpler the line, the better. Country name text should be Ariel, bold, UPPERCASE, 100-to- 80% black

Disputed Borders

Always reference the cartographic section about the correct illustration of disputed borders in your area. http://www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/english/

All text should be Ariel, Capital and Main cities 12pt with a 0.7 white halo. Capital cities underlined. Towns 8pt and villages 6pt.

Size of the symbol will need to be adjusted to suite the map.

OCHA Presence

Each of the symbols is saved to an ESRI style library included in this package. Additionally, each symbol was exported to PNG format – so as it can be imported into PPT or other graphics package. The backgrounds are transparent.

Symbols – for thematic mapping

The symbols below were selected to best fit the theme. You may use them in black and white or in a range of colors – use the ramp colors for reference. It is recommended not to include more than 4 colors for each symbol. The size of the symbol can be adjusted for the map – however 40 pt is a good start.
