My Community Grants – Ocean
Shores Public School Hall Upgrade
We are looking for broad community support
to upgrade our school hall. Please read the
following and share with anyone 16 years and
over who lives in the NSW Electorate of
Ballina.
We are upgrading the school hall (see rough
plans in newsletter) to use existing storage and
un-used bathroom space to create an arts,
environmental and cultural space for our
students and the Ocean Shores Community.
The total cost for the project is estimated at
$163000. To date, P&C has $80000 committed
to the project. If we can access the $83000 via
the My Community Grants, we will have the
necessary funding.
We need your vote. To be eligible, you need to
be aged over 16 and reside in the Ballina State
Electorate. It only takes a few minutes (along
with your Medicare details and Services NSW
login details). There is a range of worthwhile
programs in the electorate, be sure to get on
and have your say. With community support,
our hall upgrade is achievable! Thanks to
Therese and Rob for the ongoing work here on
behalf of P&C.

NAIDOC
On Tuesday we will be celebrating NAIDOC at
OSPS. Children will engage in a range of
Aboriginal cultural activities with local
community members throughout the day.
Everyone is invited to join our NAIDOC
assembly between 12.40 and 1.40pm under the
Learning Tree. Our local Muggi Culture, Deadly
Futures Indigenous students from OSPS and
surrounding schools will be performing at our
assembly and other local schools throughout
the week. Thanks to the Aboriginal Education
Team for coordination of the event.
An inspiring Indigenous Australian is Stan
Grant. I would encourage all community
members who have not done so to have a look
at Stan’s speech from 2016 about racism in
Australia. It is confronting, thought-provoking,
and worth a discussion. https://

Visible Learning – Learning Dispositions
At Week 3’s P&C meeting I will be sharing where we
are up to on the school’s visible learning journey.
Staff are currently investigating ‘learning dispositions’.
Dispositions are habits of thinking and doing, or the
way we respond to a situation or experience. Over
the next few months, we will be collaborating with
students and community to identify the dispositions
we most value in learning at OSPS.
Education Week – Every Student, Every
Voice
This year’s theme is ‘Every student, every voice’. It is
a celebration of student empowerment and how the
NSW public education system gives students the
skills they need in order to have and express a voice
during their own educational journey and as engaged
global citizens.
We are inviting families to join us in classrooms on
Wednesday 7th August between 9.30am and
11.00am and then stay for an extended recess break.
We look forward to seeing parents, carers and other
family members as we celebrate quality public
education at OSPS.
Mindfulness
Our P & C’s Barb Underwood is offering a free
mindfulness workshop in our school library on 29th
August (see back page). Along with other staff
members, I completed Barb’s 8 week course in 2017
and found it to be of immense benefit - both
personally and professionally. I would encourage all
parents and carers to come along on the 29th and
see what it is all about.
Well done Miss Daley
Miss Daley is heading off to the State PSSA Carnival
next week in the role of North Coast Coach.
Congratulations Miss Daley. We are very fortunate
to have such high quality staff contributing on a
school and regional level.
Thankyous
Tipi Forest donation: Putting out a big thank
you to D Bleach father of former students, for the
generous gift of more than 50 bales of hay left
over from their Tipi Forest business at Splendour.
The bales will be used in our upcoming
Imagination Festival as seating and then used in
the garden and chicken pen. It also shows a great
example of how we can recycle or reusing a no
longer needed product. We also appreciate the
support and assistance with the P&C funded
sound-system upgrade for the school hall. Thanks
D!
Splendour, Falls and Parklands Community
Grants Scheme: I would also like to
acknowledge and thank North Byron Parklands,
Splendour and Falls for the ongoing support of the
OSPS ‘Music In Schools Program. The annual
commitment of $5000 per year enhances our
music education of infants classes and is very
much appreciated.
Athletics carnival: Thanks to Elise, Julia, Rob
and all the staff who made the athletics carnival
such a success. Thanks also to Nadine and the
team on Canteen – it was a very successful day.
Well done to the students on attendance and
participation. Ribbons will be awarded on Monday
morning’s assembly.
Hotel Brunswick: Thanks to Kyle and the team
at the Hotel Brunswick for the pizza donations for
the Superstars Luncheon and 1J’s Pizza Party
(earned by being the highest fundraisers for the
Beachathon/Colour Run) which will be in the 1J
classroom next Friday.
Thanks to John and Brunswick Wholesale
Plants ([email protected]
0266851190) for the generous donation of finger
lime trees for planting at NAIDOC on Tuesday,
and Tulloch Horticulture for the macadamia
tree.

Performers wanted! - Festival of the Imagination
August 24th 2019 is fast approaching…
We are looking for students, parents and community
members willing to share their talents on stage dur-
ing Festival of the Imagination (FOTI).
If you can sing, dance, play an instrument or are part
of a band, we would love to have you perform on
the day.
Please contact the school directly or email Wayne
Gibbons ([email protected]) to book a
time slot.
We will have a range of instruments available and a
performance area for dancing.
Don't wait! Be part of a great day out.
Thanks from the canteen
Nadine and the wider school community would like
to thank all those who donated cakes and baked
goods for the school carnival canteen this week.
A massive thank you is also extended to Jo, Polly,
Rob, Sasha, Ebonie, Amy, Lauchie, Saroeun and Tania
for volunteering their time to make the athletics
carnival canteen and sausage sizzle a success.
Our school canteen made a profit of $1,545 this
week which is a fantastic effort!
From canteen every week to FOTI every year, all
volunteers are hugely appreciated by students and
staff at Ocean Shores PS as this is what makes our
events so successful.
Festival of the Imagination - 24 August 2019
Volunteers and donations needed for our annual
Festival of the Imagination (FOTI).
The festival is a major highlight for students and an
important fundraising opportunity for the school.
Safety Person Wanted
We are hoping to attract a willing person to take on
the overseeing role of a safety officer for the day.
Having a first aid certificate would be a minimum
requirement. Please call Damian on 0466 931 523 if
interested.
Cake Stall
We will be asking for people to bake cakes, slices
and biscuits and bring them to the festival on the day
(24th. August). If you are kindly planning to do this
could you please write the ingredients used on any
baking you provide. Thank you so much in advance.
Second Hand Stall
Nadine would like it if you could donate any good
quality clothes or shoes for the second -hand store.
Community Art Work
Everyone has those redundant half full bottles of nail
polish with last year’s colours sitting idle in their
cupboards. We hope that you can drop these to the
school and they can be used to paint a special piece
of community art work that will be created at the
FOTI.
Plant Stall
We are looking for donations of plants to sell, you
can drop off to the stall on the day or leave at the
office prior to the festival.
Tye-dye Stall
We will need donations of white clothing to be used
for tye-dying. Drop off to the stall on the day or
leave at the school office prior to the festival.
Thank you kindly in anticipation of your support and
time to make this a wonderful day for our children
and our community!
Students to record at SAE Institute
On the last day of term 2 our choir and band re-
ceived an invitation to record at the SAE (School of
Audio Engineering) Institute at Byron Bay,
This is an excellent opportunity for our students to
expand their musical knowledge and experience the
recording process in a world class facilities.
Our committed choir and band members will travel
by bus to SAE Institute on Wednesday 8 August for a
guided tour of the facility and to record four songs.
It is real life ‘Twenty First Century’ learning at its
best.

Dr Cara Wong’s Healthy Heads
Dear families, my name is Dr Cara Wong. I am a
neuropsychologist and parent, and work from a clinic
in Byron.
Over a number of years of practice and research, I
have developed an interest in the holistic brain health
of children and families.
One of my key passions is to help people understand
the importance of brain health and normalise preven-
tative mental health strategies.
I will be writing a fortnightly ‘Healthy Heads’ column
in your school newsletter giving tips and practical
strategies about brain and mental health.
I invite you and your kids to ask questions (please
send via the school email) and I will make every ef-
fort to answer them or write about a related topic in
future newsletters.
I hope my ‘Healthy Heads’ column will make a posi-
tive impact on your family and community’s wellbe-
ing.

Cybersecurity - the top 5 questions parents have
1.What are the biggest security threats
to kids?
Children and teens can be caught by the same kinds
of security problems that affect adults (drive-by
downloads, links to malicious sites, viruses and mal-
ware, etc.).
But there are some special ways criminals get to
kids, such as links to “fan sites” that contain mali-
cious links or “free stuff,” messages that look like
they're from friends, offers of free music or movies
or ring tones or anything else that a child might be
tempted to download.
2. How do I talk with my child about se-
curity?
Actually security is one of those topics that are pret-
ty easy to talk with kids about, because, just like
adults, they don’t want to be exploited, tricked or
ripped off either.
Just talk with them about how there are some peo-
ple who try to take advantage of others by stealing
their money or their information. Explain that not
everything is what it appears to be – why it’s im-
portant to think before we connect.
Don’t make it a one-time conversation; revisit it
from time to time. Ask them what they think and if
they've gotten anything suspicious lately.
Your kids might know more about cybersecurity
than you think.
3. How do we protect our family's com-
puters?
It’s important to use up-to-date security software
and make sure that your operating system and the
software you use are up-to-date.
Software companies sometimes find and then fix
security flaws via updates.
Follow the rest of the advice in this guide – such as
being careful about the websites you and your kids
visit and links you and they click on – and always
make sure you have strong passwords.
4. How do we protect our mobile devic-
es?
There are security apps for mobile devices, but the
best way to protect mobile devices is to use a PIN
(personal identification number or password), to be
careful about what apps you use and to have a way of
wiping your data if your phone is lost or stolen.
Visit ConnectSafely’s security center at connectsafe-
ly.org/security to find out about apps that will re-
motely wipe or lock your phone and help you find it
if it’s missing.
5. Why do we always hear "Never share
your passwords"?
Because it can be tempting to share passwords with
friends, and it's not sound cybersecurity.
The more widely passwords are shared, the more
your data, identity and property are out of your
control.
Sometimes friends become ex-friends or are just
careless with all that's behind your password, so it's
important that passwords are kept private, easy to
remember and hard to guess.
Talk with your kids about why it isn't a good idea to
share their passwords – except possibly with you.
But if you want to model not sharing passwords, you
can check your kids' accounts with them rather than
knowing and using their passwords when they're
unaware you're in their accounts.
For more on this, visit passwords.connectsafely.org.
