Ocean Diver Dive ClubNEWSLETTER
Issue Number 47Month AprilYear 2015
It is April, the traditional startto the UK summer divingseason but, just like thechangeable spring weather,April in the dive club also
brings with it change. At the Annual General
Meeting of the club (whichsounds really posh and exciting
to me, but in reality is justanother night in the pub) wehad a bit of a change roundwith your committee. Afterfive years of doing the
secretary job for the club, which really meant makingsure Matt looked after themoney properly, Jen has
decided to step down and takea well earned break. Matt too
has handed over theresponsibility of the clubfinances and can now
concentrate on running theclub properly. Sadly Becki toohas stepped down from thecommittee, also after five
years of organising trips, and
organising us! Both Becki andJen were instrumental in
helping to set up the club andwill be missed on the
committee, but I hope theywill stick around and be divingwith us for many more years
to come. But it is not all doom andgloom because to fill theirshoes (and good luck withthat!) Paul Pryke, Ivan
Cunningham and Jackie Wyliehave stepped up and will be
taking over. Jackie is going tobe taking over as treasurer
from Matt and you can emailher at

ganged into running the divetrips for this year, with thehelp of the rest of the
committee of course, and youcan reach him at

A really big thank you to allthose of you who turned upto the meeting and ratifiedall these changes. I knowthat to some this all seems abit pointless to just gettogether and do a few dives. However, when we startedthe club we wanted it to berun fairly and also to makesure that there was neverany doubt as to where themoney was going and whowas benefitting. That meantthat we felt we had to have
a committee of somesort, which of course meansmore work for thecommittee members but ithink it is clear that thesystem does work well andwe are getting some reallygood deals on dive tripsfor the club. And whoknows, with a bit oflottery funding maybe wecan have our own clubboat and air compressorone day!Jackie? Please?
March was a good monthfor diving, with easteregg hunts at Nemes withRob, Paul and Becki, afun filled rescue course, and a sneaky midweekdive to the Cove withSpencer and myself. As you can see from thephotos the rescue coursewas the usual mixture offun and frolics in theglorious spring sun, interspersed with somemore serious acting andrescueing!

As I have alreadymentioned, the rescue
course at the start of themonth went off with much
chaos and marriment, some panic and disaster, some controlled thoughtand careful planning, and
even some fantastic aimingand vindictive throwing...I would like to say a big
thank you to everyone whocame along to help out.
For those of you who havealready done the course
you will appreciate this themost. The more peoplethat come and help with
the different scenarios, get
into the role playing andacting and help bring therescue scenes to life (ordeath!) The better the
training is for those doingthe course and of coursethe more fun it is for
everyone. So a huge well done and
round of applause for Paul‘Totally in control’ Pryke,Rob ‘Sicknote’ McSorley,Chris ‘Throw rope’ Dixonand Kerri ‘So, should iactually get in the water
now?’ Hosking, who haveall successfully passed the
Rescue Course and are now
fully capable of reactingpromptly, safely and
efficiently to someonein distress, providedthey are calling for a
pizza of somedescription! I will
probably be runninganother Rescue courselater this year to helprefresh everybody’s
skills that may have gotrusty over the summer,
as well as giving thenew rescue divers
chance to have somemore practice with firstaid and diver rescues.

We are maintaining our specialty of the month themethis month with the deep course and fun weekender onthe 18th and 19th of April. If you fancy a weekend offun at Chepstow then do please come along for either
both days or just pop down for one day and have a few fun dives with the club.We are also going to be doing some night dives over the next few weeks if anyone fancies doingthe night dive specialty. A must for the Red Sea, or even the UK! Porthkerris in Cornwall gave
me one of the best night dives i have ever had, although the sight of a rather tipsy Dave and Deltrying to help people up the beach after the dive may have had something to do with that!Hopefully we will get back to Porthkerris soon for some more awesome beach diving and bigspotty fish hunting.... No not the one in the photo, the rather bigger one that is somewhat
elusive despite its size!Let me know if you fancy joining us on the night dive or the deep dive next weekend.
We are running open water courses throughout April and May as well and also have Matt andSteve joining Lawrence on his DM course.... So lots of diving happening now!
