Chuck Schiele comes back to play Bad Science FictionLongtime Ocean Beach res-

ident Chuck Schiele relocatedto the East Coast in 2010, buthe returns this summer to per-form with his band, Bad Sci-ence Fiction, on the StreetFair’s Main Stage at 12:30p.m.

“We’re retro hard rock witha hip hop attitude,” Schielesaid good-naturedly. “Wethrew the idea of attempting‘cool’ right out the window.Cool is boring. We're just hav-ing fun.”

Before heading east, Schielehad been a mainstay of thelocal music community andan integral part of the OBMA,including much of the musicprogramming. “I still considerOB home,” he said. “Justbecause I have to take care ofsome things on the East Coastdoesn't mean I've left OB.Believe me. I'm still there.”

Though the band, whichincludes Schiele on vocals andguitar, lead guitarist MichaelHead, bassist Tony Sandoval, keyboardist John Miller anddrummer Don Wiseman, rarely performs, according toSchiele, ramping things up, “isnot hard at all. It takes oneemail and everybody's onboard, enthusiastic and readyto rock. We don't feel rusty, whatsoever.”

Rehearsal is set for the

Thursday prior to the show.“We have a blast,” Schielesaid. “These are terrific musi-cians with no excuses for theirmusic. We make some minornudges and introduce newmaterial, sharpen it up, blowthe dust off it, put it on 11 andhit it.

“We're all very tight friends,so tequila and barbecue fol-lows our rehearsal by tradi-tion. We probably get ourgroove tighter more by hang-ing out and having a fewlaughs as bros than we dowailing through the set.”

He looks forward to playingthe main stage, with a minorreservation. “I guess I miss thelight show aspect, but, I preferto look at gigs in the sunshineon the bright side. I can seethe audience on outdoor gigs.In OB, that's good,” helaughed.

Schiele hopes to return toOB full time eventually andcontinue his life immersed inmusic on the West Coast.

“It's not a hobby, not just ajob, not at all a casual endeav-or, for me,” he said. “It’s myway of life. I still wake up inthe key of D, every day andengage with other bohemian, thinker, creative types doingcreative stuff and renderingsolutions, because, well...that's just what I do,” he said

There is no shortage of things todo at the Ocean Beach Street Fair, but the one essential stop is at itssignature event, the Chili Cook-Off.Located at the foot of VeteransAvenue, right on the water with thebest view of the whole event, thecook off is a lot of fun with boister-ous chefs and their crew doing whatthey can to garner votes for theirchili in a friendly competition.

You’ll want to get there early. While the tasting doesn’t start until11 a.m. the line can start formingup to an hour earlier. Tickets for tast-ing and judging the variousentrants chili is the same as lastyear: $2 for two servings or you canget a people’s choice ticket for $20allowing you to sample chili fromall the competitors.

There are two categories withalmost two dozen cooks represent-ed. Contestants are judged in twocategories, restaurant and amateur, with criteria set to include consis-tency, smell, color and taste. Bothmeat and vegetarian chili will beavailable, but even with all thosecompetitors the food goes fast.Another 60 gallons of chili will beprovided by area restaurant ShadesOceanfront Bistro and Craves Café.Even set alongside the 10 gallonsfrom each of the contestants, it’s allgone by 2 p.m.

The Chili Cook-Off is now in its32nd year, founded in 1984 by MikeAkey, a member of the OBMA board

of directors, with money raised bythe event going to help fund OceanBeach’s annual fireworks display.

According to Akey, while ingre-dients vary and some can includeingredients as diverse as rattlesnakeand alligator, “the biggest differencein competitors is the heat,” he said.

“Some booths try to ramp updemand up demand for their waresby having themed booths and cos-tumes. Bedsides the awards for thechili, we also have an award for themost enthusiastic entrant. You canalways tell who has the most popu-lar by the lines at their booths.”Other prizes are awarded for “Peo-ple’s Choice” and “Hottest Chili”

For his part, after more than 30years of Chili Cook Offs, Akey is justas enthusiastic as ever about theevent. “I was born and raised here,so It’s great fun for a good cause,” hesaid. But does he still enjoy eating itas much as he used to? “Once a yeardoes me just fine now,” he joked.

Wonderland fun zone for kids at Street Fair The Ocean Beach Street Fair is fun for all ages,

but there is a special area specifically designed toinclude younger fairgoers, Wonderland. Locatedat the 4800 block of Newport Avenue, the funzone is named for an amusement park that stoodin Ocean Beach exactly a century ago.

The area is all new this year, with EMS Attrac-tions providing 11 of their best rides and interac-tive games. While the fun zone focus of the areais on the younger set, there is plenty for thosewho are only young at heart to enjoy.

“We try to match attractions to the area,”noted Tracy Ring, co-ordinator of the days activ-ities for EMS Attractions. “Ocean Beach has sucha funky, beachy vibe that is so unique,” she said.

The centerpiece of the whole area will be TheSwashbuckler Zip Line, a giant inflatable pirate

ship from which riders can propel down. At morethan three stories tall, this attraction will alsooffer the best view of the whole street fair.

Meanwhile, there will also be a trackless kiddietrain, the OB Express, roaming Wonderland, which parents and children can ride together.“We will have things like toddler jumps that arespecifically for younger children,” said Ring.

With chairs and tables available for a mid-streetfair pause, Wonderland is the perfect spot for par-ents to rest while their children play. The familyfriendly nature of the area extends to the ven-dors, which will include all the kids favorites, fromice cream to cotton candy, but there will also beplenty of healthier options.

The Wonderland area will also spotlight aneclectic group of entertainers, with mimes, clowns, face painting, magicians, carnival boothsand more to keep kids occupied. Meanwhile, the

areas stage will feature performances from acous-tic acts, such as harmony based trio Siren’s Lure& Pirate John and bands like the Santana Broth-ers, a combo made up of Point Loma High stu-dents who excel at covers of everyone from ChuckBerry to Bruno Mars.

New this year, the activity will extend beyondthe Wonderland borders, into Veterans Plaza atthe foot of Newport. “A new game will take placeright after the chili cook-off,” said Ring. “BodyBubble Soccer,” will find players wearing largeinflatable plastic bubbles as they try to score agoal, it’s a lot of fun to play and to watch.”

Whether you are into the interactive challengesor simply want to enjoy some quality time withyour youngster, a visit to Wonderland is an essen-tial part of your Street Fair day.

Find unique and locallymade goods at Artists Alley

Since Ocean Beach’s has a repu-tation as an artist’s community, it’sonly natural that the Street Fair’sArtists Alley would be a majorattraction.

Located on two blocks of CableStreet at Newport Avenue, fairgoerswill find an impressive variety ofhandmade arts and crafts, with a lit-tle bit of everything, from body jew-elry to paintings of local scenery, tie-dyed clothing to musicalinstruments, even skincare and bathitems, all hand-crafted. With theactual artisan on hand you’ll be ableto meet the person who created youritems.

“It’s really a special area,” saidOBMA executive director DennyKnox. “There is something for justabout everyone, and all the differentvendors displays can make thingsvery colorful.” She is happy that theStreet Fair has become something

that helps local artists. “For some thisis the big event of the year,” she said.“It’s nice to see artists who returneach year and what they have that’snew.”

Artists Alley is the perfect spot tofind a unique gift, with one of a kindtreasures at every booth.

Amongst this year’s highlights arehandmade hula hoops from UnityHoops as well as a line of Victorian-influenced women's clothing, fromPretty Fancy. However the winnerof the most unusual booth promisesto be Robots, featuring the works ofMatt Q. Spangler, such as “paintings, prints and books of an ordinaryrobot, doing ordinary things.”

With an artist’s imagination theonly limit to what might be found inArtists Alley, it is one of the “mustsee” areas of the Street Fair. For afurther look at this year’s ArtistsAlley’s vendor, visit oceanbeach-sandiego.com.

The annual Ocean Beach Street Fairhas many things going for it, includinggreat weather, proximity to the beachand of course, the chili, but without adoubt the biggest draw is the music.Music fans attending the event will findnearly three dozen of the area’s top per-formers playing on five different stages.

The Main Stage is booked by TedWigler, who handles the same duties atWinston’s as well as the 710 Beach Club, with Michael Head, of Head TrapRecording Studios, taking care of theremaining stages.

Wonderland StageThe mix of bands on this year’s bill

truly showcase the musical diversity ofthe San Diego arts community, with anemphasis on Ocean Beach residentmusicians. The Wonderland Stage willonce again be topped by high-schooled-aged rockers, The Santana Brothers (5p.m.) performing a mix of classics fromthe likes of Chuck Berry and BrunoMars, with the rest of the day’s high-lights including singer-songwriter PeterHall (noon) and classic rock / funkhybrid Soul Arch (2 p.m.)

Artist Alley StageA few blocks over, the Artist Alley

stage will be topped by gypsy folk quin-tet Quel Brodel (4:30 p.m.); with othertop picks set to include rock /blues trio,Bi-Polar Express (noon) and Middle-East-ern percussion and music group, CairoBeats (1:30 p.m.)

Ragalan StageMeanwhile, the Ragalan Stage will be

co-headlined by reggae/rock combo JetWest (6 p.m.) and indie rocker Leyva(4:30 p.m.), with Ginger Cowgirl, fea-turing Stacy Antonel (11 a.m. amongstthe best bets)”

OB StageThe 92107 OB stage is specifically

themed to focus on Ocean Beach artists, with music from eclectic local rock heroJefferson Jay (noon) and indie pop dance

duo Dani Bell & The Tarantist (1:30p.m.) sure to draw big crowds. That stagewill be perfectly topped by an appear-ance from Grateful Dead tribute group,The Electric Waste Band.

Main Stage Saving the best for last, the Main

Stage is possibly the most eclectic ofthem all with appearances from modrockers The Bassics (3 p.m.), dancecombo, Bang Pow (3:50) amd hip hopfavorites, Vokab Kompany (7 p.m.)

Music will not just be confined to the

stages. Rock & Roll San Diego will hostan area on Newport Avenue that willallow any fairgoer to take a quick musiclesson and in mere minutes be able tojam along to classic rock tunes. Thisyear’s theme will be The Beach Boys, while a set of Kiss impersonators will beon hand to perform and pose with fans.

While everyone looks forward to per-forming at the street fair, there are somechallenges.

“It’s definitely different, just in theway the sound carries,” said Quel Bordelfrontman, Jakovich Skolnick. “But the

main difficulty playing outdoors in anysetting is dealing with nature. I remem-ber playing last year and it was lightlysprinkling, and sometimes you play out-side in direct sun – it totally depends onthe day and you have to go with it,” hesaid.

For Wigler and Head, organizing sucha large group of musicians and infras-tructure is a labor of love. “What keepsme doing it is my love for volunteering inthe Ocean Beach community,” he said.“I personally don't have the finances togive to the community, so the only wayI can truly give it is my time. I've watchedevents like this go away in other com-munities, so I cherish the ability to dothis in Ocean Beach,” he said.

Quel Bordel Gypsy folk rockers Quel Bordel mod-

ern take on world music, will excite thesenses with a set full of daring arrange-ments and boundless energy. Basedaround acoustic guitarist Jakovich Skol-nick and violinist Regina Brown, theband has been known to inspire frenzieddancing with their uptempo originals, such as shout along favorite “SoggyBlanket.” Quel Bordel is a wonderfulcombination of virtuoso musicianshipand showmanship, but the key elementin the band’s show is fun.

The Bassics Mod rockers, The Bassics make their

Street Fair debut this year. Channelingthe frantic energy of groups such as the

37TH ANNUAL OCEAN BEACH STREET FAIR & CHILI COOK-OFF FESTIVALSATURDAY, JUNE 25, 2016 • 10AM - 8PM • OBSTREETFAIR.COM • OCEANBEACHSANDIEGO.COM

It’s no secret that volunteers are the lifeblood of theOcean Beach Street Fair. Without them it wouldn’t bepossible to stage an event of this size. Even with so manyhelping hands involved, according to OBMA executivedirector Denny Knox, one volunteer, Michele Amster-dam, stands out, not only for her willingness to pitch inwherever needed, but also as she’s a part time Obecian. The rest of the year, she’s a resident of Fort Worth, Texas.

“We just love having her. She does so much,” saidKnox. “She’s really become an integral part of ourgroup.”

This year, Amsterdam can be found running the StreetFair’s info and merchandise booth as well as “helping outwith anything else that needs doing,” she said.

Amsterdam had fallen in love with OB on previousvisits while her son lived here. Upon her retirement, sheknew where she wanted to spend her summers. But shewas restless.

“I knew I wanted to be in Ocean Beach, especiallywhen it’s so hot back in Fort Worth, but if I was going tobe here, I felt I might as well be doing something,” Ams-terdam said good naturally.

“I was just looking for something to do, as I’m notone of those ladies who just likes to ‘do lunch.’ I keptwalking by the OBMA offices, so I thought why not go inand say ‘Hi.’”

Welcomed with open arms, that visit has now turnedinto more than a decade of volunteering for Amster-dam.

Amsterdam is happy to contribute to her adoptedhometown and pleased with what she’s found in OceanBeach. “I don’t really know many of my neighbors, backin Fort Worth,” she said. “But here people stop me on thestreet to say ‘hello.’ It’s a wonderful place.”

Volunteers are the core to Street Fair’s success

Jam and The Who, the group tookhome the “Best New Artist” trophy atthe 2015 San Diego Music Awards. The quartet does include a few choic-es covers in their set, by the likes of theSmall Faces, but it’s their adrenalinecharged originals such as “Can’t StopMe,” that have won audiences over. The band is working on their debutalbum but live is where the Bassicsreally take flight.

Dani Bell and the TarantistThe sound of masked duo, singer

Dani Bell and the Tarantist, aka per-cussionist Al Howard, is hard to pin-point, but it’s kaleidoscope of influ-ences includes dreamy indie pop, girlgroup sounds, ’70s era soul and lots ofrhythm. The unifying factor is a strongsense of melody, with songs like “BestWithout Me” or “Guilty” being instantearworms.

“I love playing outside in San Diegobecause 98 percent of the time it's abeautiful day,” Howard said. “Thecrowd is always a great and lively one.OB wields less of a filter than a lot ofother communities, people really letgo and surrender to the music. It's afun vibe to play off of.
