A GREAT INDUSTRY IN DANGER
Resolutions Passed at a Meeting ofthe Leading Cigar Manufacturers-
of Tampa
Tampa Tribune April 7
At a special meeting of the cigarmanufacturers of Tampa Ybor City
I
and Wrest Tampa called by EnriqueFondas one of the leading cigar menoi the city and held last evening atthe Spanish casino In Ybor Citystrong resolutions were passed calling attention of the people ofand Florida as well to the conditionswhich will prevail in Tampa if thestate goes dry and the menace stateprohibition will prove to the cigar in ¬
dustry of Tampa I
Fqr several months in fact since theprohibition agitation first began thepeople of Tampa have discussed thenatters touched upon in these reso ¬
lutions their attention has been di-
rected¬
to the matters through thepress and by public speakers yet theofficial confiimation was lacking untilthis action one of unanimity on thepart of the manufacturers at themeeting last night made thestand ofthe cigarmakers clear and voiced inno uncertain terms the results of pro-hibition
¬
upon the sommunityThe Resolutions Passed
The resolutions followWhereas There is now being agi-
tated in the state of Florida the ques ¬
tion of state prohibition which we re¬
gard as the o great and seriousmenace to the state of Florida par¬
ticularly to the county of Hillsborough and-
Whereas The cigar industry of thiscounty produces annually a productworth approximately twenty millions-of onethird of thetotal products of the state as it onlyproduces sixty million dollars annu ¬
ally and-Whereas The people engaged in
this cigar industry manufacturersand employes are nearly all Span ¬
iards Italians and Cubanspeople-ho are lawabiding temperate in
every respect and who use but do notabuse the use of wines and liquorslight wines being used by the Latinrace as coffee and tea is being usedbj the Americans and
Vhereas These people having beenused for generations to so use winesand liquors and never dreamed thatany effort would be made in a suppos-ed
¬
free country to deprive them of theright of eating drinking whatthe see fit the successful consumma ¬
tion of which they would regard asan unwarranted invasion of their per-sona
¬
liberties and w uld probably re-sent
¬
to such a degree as that wewould be unable to maintain the in ¬
dustry here should prohibition be en ¬
forced and-Whereas We think we know the
situation and the consequent loss tothe city of Tampa the county ofHillsborough and the state of Floridathat would follows the enactment ofsuch an unwise unortunate and sui-cidal
¬
law therefore-Be Its Resolved First That we deem-
it our duty to call the attention ofthe people of this county and the state-o Florida to this serious situation aswfc see it
No Threats MadeSecond That while we do not make
any threats that in the event stateprohibition is enacted we wiil leaveIhere because we are citizens of Flor¬
ida and are making this state burhome and have as much loYaJt forFldrida as any other citizen of it yetwo feel tat because of the traditionsand opinions of the Latin race on thismatter that we would absolutely beunable to maintain the industry inthis state should state prohibition beenacted
Third That we located our industry-in this state under the local optionclause of the constitution of this statewhich permitted the people of eachcounty to settle this question for them-selves and the citizens who original-ly
¬
welcomed and aided in the locaton-of the indu trt here proposed andguaranteed that our people would bepermitted to liVe and enjoy themsel-evs and eats and drink as they wereaccustomed to do in their home coun ¬
try and good faith v demands a com-pliance
¬
of the promises under whichunions of dollars are now invested inthis country-
Not Politics But Business InterestFourth That we never Interfere
with the politics of this state and arecontent to live under any officers thatthe people of this state may see fit toelect but we do demand that havingleft our mother country and made ourhr roes and invested our all in s thispromising state that we shoUld bepermitted to follow the customs underwhich we and our ancestors havebeen reared
Fifth That we cannot too strongly-call 1 to the attention of the people ofthe state the serious condition thatconfronts them
Sixth That copies of these resolu ¬
tions be furnished the AssociatedPress of the state generally
