A note from the MUGSU President

    Hi everybody!

I hope the start of the University year has been a

productive and safe one for you all and the

assignments aren't causing you too many hours of

    lost sleep.

It has been quite a busy year so far as we try our

best to help students get the best out of their

university experience. Ultimately the easiest way

for us to work together on this is if we are aware of

what is troubling the student body. So please

contact us regarding anything you require

    assistance with through the communication

    channels outlined in this newsletter.

As the transition to Federation University has

progressed there has been a growing number of

Federation students pushing for the establishment

of a new independent student union, Fusion. The

intention of this movement is to continue the

presence of a student union at the Gippsland

campus as MUGSU starts to wind up during the

teach out of Monash students. The MUGSU Board

endorses the establishment of Fusion Gippsland,

and is mentoring the FedUni students as they

develop Fusion moving forward. If you are

interested in becoming involved in this exciting

process, please contact us and we can discuss ways

for you to contribute to the continuation of an

    independent student union at Gippsland.

    All the best!

  • CHECK IN WEEK 2015By Ben Dahl

Student Check in week was rather overshadowed by the timely protestof the Student union but never the less went ahead as planned. Theweek is dedicated to seeing how first year students are settling in atUniversity and also to see how second and third year students are doingwith their continued studies. The week also marked the census date forwhich students were allowed to actively withdraw from any of theircourses without receiving a penalty or payments.

Students were encouraged and spoken to by peers and mentorsthroughout the week, with a hive of activity located in the knuckle. Heresenior students, mentors and staff engaged with students who came upand got to know how they were dealing with University life, any helpthat they may need and what they thought of their current coursedirection. Also on offer were information brochures on courses and unitsbut most of all the freebies given out to draw the students in.

With Check-In week over and the Census date passed many have nowfound themselves with the first taste of University cost with their bill (formost deferred for now by government sponsorship)arriving to show howmuch their current course will cost them for the semester. Upside of theweek free stuff handed out but the downside a bill waiting to be paid.

However just because check in week is over students do not need to feelthat they are just stuck with their course or no one will care how theirstudies are going. The week also sought to show students that there aremany on campus that will help them out, all they need to do is ask.

    Unionism at Fed Uni

  • Back to school was the first MUGSU

uni night held this year and more

    than 327 students attended the

    night. Everybody cracked out their

old school uniforms and came down to

the MUGSU lounge for one of this

    University's biggest, wildest and most

    anticipated 'Uni Nights'. They were

impatient to see L-Fresh The Lion,

MGMC and Dj Rowan Lace in action.

L-FRESH The LION is renowned for

    his powerful presence, inspiring live

    shows and thought-provoking hip

hop lyrics. In a short space of time,

this Western Sydney artist has gone

    from underground community

events and ciphers to national tours

    and major festivals.

As it was the end of summer, MUGSU gave

students a last chance to wear their favorite

summer gear and party - MUGSU style. We had Dj

Scotty on his turn tables and Dj Rowan Lace on

his decks. DJ Scotty is a resident DJ at the Philip

Island hotel. He had all the tunes for an amazing

beach party; from -HIP HOP to RNB to SOUL to

JAZZ to REGGAETON to DUBSTEP to

    PROGRESSIVE HOUSE to ELECTRO HOUSE.

For that special night, we had special guestDJ from Loud Entertainment Melbourne, DJNathan Thomson and our resident Dj RowanLace. There is one thing without doubt thatanyone who has seen a live set from him willtell you - 'I've never see so many girls on adance floor'.

Thomson is the epitome of a female friendlyDJ and is known for his high energy sets andmelodic Melbourne tunes. Holdingresidencies at Tramp, Empire, Wah Wah,Korova Milkbar, Cloud Nine and many moreMelbourne establishments consistently overthese past few years, Nathan has theexperience to play to any crowd. • I was lucky enough to attend the Model United Nations conference on11th February 2015 at Monash University Clayton campus. I was thefirst FedUni student ever to attend this event, and my entire trip wasfunded thanks to a bursary from the Student Leadership Program. Theconference went for 3 days with the various activities such asNetworking sessions, club night, speeches from politicians, finale balland even a closing ceremony hosted in the Victorian State parliament.

Not easy as ABC Reporting on the Model UN

    - Article written by Sammy Desai, Fed Uni IT Student

The conference was essentiallya simulation of the United Nations. AtVicMUN, delegates gained insight intothe workings of the UN by recreating(in theory) the spirit of diplomacy thatoriginally defined the United Nations. The participants debated and tackledvarious global issues from theperspective of a delegate representing amember nation of the UN.

There were many different committees in VicMUN such as humanrights council, security council, first general assembly, press corps andeach committee dealt with a specific set of issues. The committeesultimate aim was to pass a resolution, which helped address the issuesthat were discussed. Some committees were more successful thanothers in this, as in real life!

Participation in VicMUN was rigorous, but rewarding. All the delegateswere confronted with the need to set aside their personal opinion andtake up the official policy of the country they had chosen to represent. It was difficult especially when the topics being discussed werecontroversial such as: Addressing the Human Rights of LGBTIIndividuals, The Question of Continued Israeli Settlements inPalestinian Territories etc.

  • research skills, and communication skills, and creates the platform tomeet new people and make new friends.

We're always looking for great stories of people's Leadership experiences for the

leadership-related activity, please contact the Scholarships team:

I was in the Press corps representing ABC news. As a press delegate Iwas allowed to sit in each committee and got a chance to see allthe goings-on in each committee. We also had a press conferencewhere we asked questions to the delegates and tried to find out theircountry's position on the particular issues. At the end of each session Iwrote articles on the committee I was sitting, which can be accessedat https://vicmun2015.wordpress.com/ The press corps delegateswere also responsible for updating the VicMUN Twitter feed with thebreaking news from each committee. In my opinion the press corps isthe best way to get the idea of how Model UN works.

I think VicMUNallows the nextgeneration of leadersto understand aboutthe workings of theUN. It also promotesstudents interest inpolitics, law orinternationalrelations, increasesthe capacity forstudents to engage inproblem solving, conflict resolution,
