These articles will be published in I&I News (though not all in one issue), and I would be pleased to receive other contributions. Technical Tips No. 12

20 May 2014

My recent request for examples of designs of obs-ervatories resulted in a considerable response, and I have received numerous contributions describing and illustrating many and various types, from small low-cost designs to large structures housing several instruments. These articles will be published in I&I News (though not all in one issue), and I would be pleased to receive other contributions. In the mean-time, the forty-three observatories presented here will hopefully provide ideas and inspiration. The mystery object in the previous Technical Tips is Harvard College Observatory’s polar telesc-ope (a 12-inch refractor with an 18-inch siderostat), designed by Willard P. Gerrish, installed in 1900, and used mainly for education and variable-star work. Denis Buczynski and Tim Withers identified it corr-ectly. The next enigma is at top right.

A note by the Director

I have had discussions with Ranjit Bhamra concerning the types of telescope

(for visual observations) and the design of observatories for those with disabilities. Ranjit is Co-Chair of Inspire Community Trust, working in partnership with the London

Borough of Bexley. If you can provide suggestions or advice, please contact him directly.
