Dorothy Johnson June 18, 1912 - June 23, 2014 Dorothy (Appel) Johnson was born on a farm near Estelline on June 18, 1912. Her parents were Andrew and Ada Appel and she was the youngest of nine siblings. She was raised on a farm near Estelline and completed her education after the 8th grade at Preston School from which she walked a half mile each way. Ted Trautman was one of her teachers in school. With good grades the kids were allowed to be in school plays. The students traveled to many towns and many plays were performed. Dorothy also sang in the church choir because she enjoyed the people. She then went to work as a home care provider, cooking, cleaning and taking care of children for families. One summer Dorothy and two of her girlfriends camped at Oakwood State Park in a cabin. One afternoon she saw some very good-looking men from Arlington approach them, and one of them was Eldon. That was the beginning of their story together. Dorothy was united in marriage to Eldon Johnson on June 18, 1935. Dorothy and Eldon raised four children, Joan, Jim, Janice and Jerry. In her younger years she worked for the Estelline Hospital. Dorothy and Eldon moved to Sioux Falls in 1970 and resided there until her passing. Eldon passed away in December of 1993 and she continued to live in her home. During the course of her life she not only raised and nourished her four children, she devoted many years to babysitting in her home. She loved the little babies and cherished all of her time with them. Her biggest accomplishment in life was her family and the pride of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Proud to have shared her life are her four children, Joan Gilligan of Estelline and her children, Kevin, Patty, Brian and Teressa; James (Sue) Johnson of Hayti, SD and their children, Tanya Rae, Todd, Scott and Sue Lynn; Janice (Richard) Kornmann of Sioux Falls and their children, Scott, Lisa and Leah; Jerry (Dona) Johnson of Ruskin, FL and their children; as well as 25 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Ethel, Daisy, Della, Jack, Helen, Ralph, Harv and Albert, and a son-in-law Pat Gilligan. Dorothys greatest joys in life were living in her home she shared with Eldon, her bird Hoops, her children and grandchildren and her beautiful flowers. She loved to share her life stories and all of the things that she had experienced through her 102 years on this earth. She was amazed with computers and cell phones. Although she never drove a car in her life, she never lacked a ride getting to and from where she needed to be, if it be groceries, doctor or salon appointments. She died on Monday, June 23, 2014 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls at the age of 102 years. Born: June 18, 1912 Death: June 23, 2014

Dorothy (Appel) Johnson was born on a farm near Estelline on June 18,1912. Her parents were Andrew and Ada Appel and she was the youngest ofnine siblings. She was raised on a farm near Estelline and completed her educationafter the 8th grade at Preston School from which she walked a half mile eachway. Ted Trautman was one of her teachers in school. With good grades thekids were allowed to be in school plays. The students traveled to many townsand many plays were performed. Dorothy also sang in the church choir becauseshe enjoyed the people. Her funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Friday, June 27, 2014 at the United Churchof Christ in Estelline. Visitation will be from 4PM to 7PM Thursday at Geise FuneralHome in Estelline.
