Science Faculty Report

The Science Faculty organised a display in the Office Foyer during the Education Week recently. Two year 12 Chemistry students also sat for their National Chemistry Quiz Competition at the end of July 2011. Once again the Year 8 Science students will be sitting for their Essential Secondary School Science Assessment on the 22nd of November 2011 (ESSA).

The Science classroom has been buzzy with activities with Year 8 and Year 10 students just completing their chemistry unit as part of the Science Curriculum.

During Term 4, Year 9 students will be engaged in a sustainable energy project that was initially funded by Australian Science and Technological Organisation (STELR). At the same time, the Year 7 pupils will be engaged in a very stimulating and motivating project as part of the COGS unit in collaboration with the TAS Faculty.

Small Schools Rugby League

State Champions – Again!

The combination of Oberon High School and St Josephs Central School has once again proved successful in the NSW Country Rugby League under 16 State Competition.

After the success in 2010 the combined school team has once again taken out the 2011 trophy, triumphing over Murrumburrah High School by 38 points to 18.

The team started the campaign at the annual Gala Day in Dubbo where they were undefeat-ed and allowed them to advance to the Northern NSW semi-final. Here the side had to make the long journey to Coonabarabran to face St Philomena‘s of Moree. The Oberon team running away with this match in the second half to record a well earned victory and a ticket to the final the following week.

The team began the final with the strong attacking style that they had used successfully in the previous games however, they were unable to cross the Murrumburrah line and they capitalised with a try after receiving two consecutive penalties. From here the Oberon side regrouped and were able to post three of their own tries which were converted to lead 18 – 4 at the half time break.

The second half was a see-sawing event with both teams scoring some good tries but the Oberon boys were able to maintain their lead throughout and with a couple of late tries they were able to extend it to finish up 38 points to 18.

All the players put in a fantastic effort and it was hard to separate their performances. Congratulations must go to the players for their teamwork and execution of the game plan.

The Oberon High School members of the team were: Ethan Barker, Dylan Jones, Graham Davina, Thomas McKinnon, Jake Bailey, Bailey Rogers, Ryan Armstrong, Brody Maher, Beau Stockdale and Tim Callan.

Thanks must go to the coach Clint Giddings from St Josephs and for the cooperation between the two schools. A very special thanks must also go to the parents of the players who travelled to support the team over the three days and a considerable amount of kilometres.

Connor’s Volleyball Success 2011

At the beginning of the year Connor Sherlock was selected in the Western Region boys volleyball team. The team coached by Jeremy Sheader from Kelso High captured its first State CHS Volleyball title this century at Tamworth on March 17!

The boys won 7 from 8 of their games against all regions of the State losing only one game against Sydney South West, the reigning champions, on the last game of the tournament. Western then played them in the final defeating them in a straight 2 set victory 21-18 and 21-12.

Connor who captained the Western Region side was ecstatic with the win as this was his third and final year with the team.

He also took out the Western Coach‘s award for the tournament and was selected in the CHS NSW State team for 2011 along with one of the Kelso boys.

Connor went on to play in the NSW All Schools Tri series at Homebush where he was selected in the ‗NSW All Stars Six‘.

Next step was a trip to Wollongong for the Trans Tasman series in June where he represented the NSW Combined High School State team. NSW had a successful series but NZ & Queensland dominat-ed the competition.

His success led to a selection in the NSW U/19 State team where Connor flew to Adelaide in the July School holidays. They played against Qld WA SA TAS ACT and Victoria in an exciting tournament.

Oberon High School Touch Footy

Learmonth Park

Wednesday 17th August 2011

Three teams from OHS travelled to Learmonth Park last Wednesday to take part in the Junior Touch Footy Competition against schools from Orange, Mudgee, Lithgow, Kelso, Bathurst and St Josephs-Oberon.

All 3 teams put in a sterling performance with Oberon High‘s girls team achieving the most number of outstanding wins.

Mr Watkins and Mrs Pringle were particularly impressed at the ‗gutsy‘ effort displayed by ALL participants from Oberon High. For example, whilst other teams‘ substituted players‘ throughout the match, Oberon students played the entire match without a break.

The girl‘s team consisted of: Jessie-lee Hayne, Keira Roach, Holly Newson, Lourie Bailey, Shannon Foley, Rashelle Arriola, Sophie Couling, Ivy Moore, and Larissa Kennedy.

The Boys Team 1 consisted of: Jamie Arriola, Josh Harvey, Luke Foley, Sam Bates, Jarrod Oliver, Kaine Cuthbert, Jake McMahon, and Sean Neilsen.

The Boys Team 2 consisted of Caylib Marston, Joseph Kingy, Kane Arriola, Josh Stapley, Damian Curran, Wikus Vosloo, Jake Dwyer, and Jayden Fagg.

A Special ―Thank-You‖ to OHS‘s resident photographer: Mr Watkins who captured some awesome photo‘s on the day.
